History "When I Was A Teenager, I Had The BIGGEST Crush On D'arcy"

Did anyone go to that Smashing Pumpkins show a few days ago? A little while ago I was wondering what ever happened to their original bassist D'arcy Wretzky, and my girlfriend crudely informed me, "Didn't you hear? She was arrested after she got high on crack and let her horses loose and they overran her town, in Michigan or something..." WHOA.

I did know that D'arcy had left after 11 years with the Smashing Pumpkins, following rumors of drugs and a bad breakup with bandmate James Iha, and she announced she would be pursuing an acting career. Following her departure, she was replaced with Melissa Auf der Maur (from Hole!) until Billy Corgan announced an official break. Then for the band's reunion Corgan briefly hired ex-pop punker Ginger Pooley. Now Nicole Fiorentino, from the band Cold and Lovely, is the band's fourth bassist, and from what I hear is an amazing musician (not to always bring everything back to Hole, but the drummer on the Cold and Lovely debut record is none other than Patty Schemel).

The thing I kept hearing whenever this Smashing Pumpkins show came up was, "...aw man when I was a teenager, I used to have the BIGGEST crush on D'arcy... it wouldn't be the same without her." I get that; I always felt inspired by her raw grungy energy in the same way Kim Deal and Kim Gordon appealed to my teenage quest for role models. So while I wanted to go to the show, teenage me would just want to look at the band in the same way, and sometimes the appeal of a reunion show just isn't the same without an actual re-uniting of the key band member. The band is permanently trapped in the ’90s teen section of my brain and it feels like the Smashing Pumpkins aren't really the Smashing Pumpkins without D'arcy Wretzky in it.

I did have a minor obsession with D'arcy on their Melancholy-era Rolling Stone cover.

I went to the show after Comcast Arena sent a coupon code for $12 tickets, and I had a great time. The new ablum Oceania has that classic Pumpkins sound without trying like it's manufactured. I like it.

I think everyone I knew had a crush on D'Arcy when we were teenagers.
