OMG, Shuggie Otis to Play Triple Door April 23 & 24

Posted by on Wed, Nov 14, 2012 at 1:49 PM

This is the most inspirational information I've received today: Shuggie Otis—composer of the psych-soul classic "Strawberry Letter 23" (covered extremely well by the Brothers Johnson) and many other gems—is playing Triple Door April 23 and 24, 2013. I can wait, but it's not gonna be easy. This dude is so badass, he turned down an offer to play guitar with the Rolling Stones in 1974. This dude is so badass, he was playing guitar with his father, R&B star Johnny Otis, at age 13. Shuggie's facility with blues idioms, his light-fingered soulfulness, and his preternaturally beautiful melodic sense have made him a true cult hero.

This booking is so major. Many heads probably had given up hope of ever seeing the reclusive Otis live, although there is footage on YouTube of him playing with Mos Def a few years ago. Tickets for these shows ($30) go on sale Nov. 15 at 10 am. I can wait, but it's going to be a struggle.

@2 Wow, that is cringeworthy. Let's hope Shuggie's gotten his shit together in the last dozen years.

Hell yes! Scott Giampino/Triple Door booking human/ gets major props for making this one happen. Shuggie Otis is a mind-bendingly talented dude. It's true that like most of those types he's had more than his share of personal problems... but word is he's doing pretty well these days. BTW... the record that everyone should seek out is Freedom Flight... start to finish one of the best proto-funk albums ever. It contains the OG version of Strawberry Letter 23 mentioned above, George Duke and Aynsley Dunbar (and others!) as session players... the first song, Ice Cold Daydream, is a SUPER BAD ASS JAM... and Shuggie was 18 years old when he dropped that chunk-o-wax.

You might want to wait for early reviews from the tour before buying tix, because the last time he tried to headline his own show was a HUGE trainwreck.
