Super-prolific German ambient-music producer/label boss Pete Namlook (born Peter Kuhlmann) passed away Nov. 8 at age 52. The cause of death is still unknown.

Namlook ran the influential FAX label, which was a fertile font of mostly beatless, deeply spacey electronic music. Its roster included greats like Bill Lawell, Klaus Schulze, Richie Hawtin, Tetsuo Inoue, Jochem Paap (aka Speedy J), and Atom Heart. Throughout the ’90s and ’00s, Namlook did more than almost anyone to push ambient music into the future. He will be missed.
