Love Happy Birthday, ODB (The Remix)

I started this post on November 13th, the day of the ODB's death—but I prefer to celebrate the man's bornday, which is today. You can read my 2004 eulogy for the man here.)

Today, we celebrate the birth of Russell Jones, the late great Ol' Dirty Bastard—who's style had no father. With every passing year and Tumblr GIF reblog, it becomes more and more apparent that the soulful king of unhinged rap sangin' was truly ahead of his time. Let us peep, then, a rare ODB treat: the video for the "Shimmy Shimmy Ya" Studio Ton Remix featuring MC Eiht and E-40. (You'd be forgiven for never knowing this shit even existed in the first place.)

In fact, Dirt McGirt was kind of a remix king, wasn't he? The greatest trick pulled by the guy who once claimed to have invented the remix might have been pairing Dirty up with a bubblegum R&B princess—okay, technically it wasn't a remix but it had that flavor, plus it kinda remixed Mariah's whole career to follow:
One of my favorites was always him and Busta's freakish "Woo-Ha" redo:
Then there's the Blackstreet/Fishbone/Slash remix, one of my favorite pop music cluster-effs ever.
Lastly, the video for the Lord Digga remix of "Brooklyn Zoo"—a whole different animal from the OG version—is pretty crazy, and far from the last of the extreme Wu-Tang visuals, but the first of their Hong Kong-style crime epics. As bad-great as The Man With The Iron FIsts was, I'd rather sit in a theatre with a 40 of some shit you don't even see on the West Coast, like Ballantine, and watch watch an endless loop of Wu-Tang videos. Then, I could pour some out on the floor for the departed genius of Ol' Dirty.
