The Best Song With "Thank You" in Its Title

Posted by on Wed, Nov 21, 2012 at 2:46 PM

Because of tomorrow's holiday, thankfulness is on a lot of people's minds. For me, that means music. For Line Out, that means fluffy posts about the best song with "Thank You" in its title. So many songs have these words in their titles; we humans are a damned thankful lot. After some perfunctory research, I've concluded that Sly & the Family Stone's 1969 hit "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)" is the greatest such tune in the canon of musical gratitude. (Check also Magazine's cover of it.) Coiled, minimalist/maximalist, celebratory funk with a genius arrangement and Sly and company's vocal acrobatics? Competition is none.

What is your considered/haphazard opinion on this matter?

You are correct; this is the best of the "thank you" songs. There is that Sam & Dave song (that ZZ Top covered), which is pretty solid too.

Chrisma - Thank You (1977)…

I would go with Sam & Dave's "I Thank You," or Talking Heads' "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel."

Sly is the best.

Also great, "Thank You Friends" by Big Star.

"Wham Bam, Thank You Ma'am" by Dean Martin from 1950 is pretty great. "Thank You For Being You" by The Pastels is too. "Be Thankful for What You Got" by William DeVaughn is an awesome slice of Philly Soul. "Thank You For A Lovely Evening" by the great Faron Young for your country fix. And remember that there's another version of that Sly song called "Thank You For Talking To Me Africa".
