Did you know if you slow down the theme from The Price Is Right by 800%, it sounds like this?
Who knew, right? But it got me to thinking about the music on that long-running game show. Like the basic design scheme of the studio's sets, the music on TPIR has stayed mostly frozen in time with its chunky 70s synths and over the top horns. And, much like how you can't listen to Bohemian Rhapsody without thinking of Wayne's World, it's impossible to hear tracks like "The Big Banana" out of context and not think about A NEW CAR!!!
Many of the show's music cues were written by Edd Kalehoff, a television composer who gave us such "Oh, I know that song!" moments like the themes from Monday Night Football, Wide World Of Sports, Family Feud, and Double Dare, among others.
If you've ever wanted to have the 1970's library of music used on TPIR, you can download it for free here Yes, both "The Big Banana" and this very useful cut are on it. But not the New Pornographers' "July Jones', which creates its own Wayne's World/Bohemian Rhapsody-like moment with this fan made music video.
