Your Hippie Parents Would Be Proud

Posted by on Tue, Dec 4, 2012 at 9:01 AM

(Triple Door) Did you grow up with hippie parents? Did they have Sweet Honey in the Rock albums? Maybe this is not universal. But I remember poring over the album cover for Good News—which was designed to look like the front page of a newspaper—as a kid, and I remember sitting next to our big old record-player cabinet listening to their crazy-good harmonies. And yeah, maybe it's kinda cheesy, but hey: If you can think of something cooler to do with your Tuesday night than go see a 30-year-old all-female all-black a cappella group started by civil-rights activist/scholar/musician Bernice Johnson Reagon, I guess you're just too cool for me. C'mon—take your mom on a mom date!

actually sweet honey in the rock is going to be celebrating their 40th anniversary of being a group next year. i remember going to see them perform at red and black books on 15th (now a dollar store...oh the irony never ceases...) when they were on their 20th anniversary tour - have the book that commemorates their history up til then.
they are always an uplifting show, and cannot wait for the 9:30 show tomorrow night!

Wish I knew about this before today. I have, in fact, taken my mom to see the sisters before and I would've done it again. They're incredible.
