There sure was a lot of silly sacred cow chatter regarding this performance: a Beatle/aka the Walrus, a guy from the last Scream lineup, one of the Germs, and the only ORIGINAL member of the Nirvanas, a tall, balding mofo from Aberdeen, Warshington. Yup, and together they played what sounded like an early...uh, Kyuss outtake, but it was all for a worthy charity, natch. No BIG, right?!?
However, the way I see it, all this concern and chatter was a wash for what was really happening. Charity notwithstanding, the "Nirvana reunion hype" was just that; the REAL sitch going down was Pat Smear, ex-Germs guitarist, was onstage per-FORMING with former Beatle, Paul McCartney!!
Turns out there's a weird link which binds the Germs' legend to the Beatles'. Darby Crash, singer for the Germs, died hours prior to Beatle John Lennon's murder. Crash's death was a suicide, a well-planned suicide...staged for maximum media coverage, but then Lennon was killed. With Lennon assassinated as a headline, no one cared much about some punk who committed suicide. A coincidence, perhaps, foreshadowed in a Germs song, "Richie Dagger's Crime." In his death, Crash BECOMES his character "Richie Dagger" with Lennon becoming the (Working Class) hero, the "hero" Crash/"Dagger" struggled to take on!! "Dagger" lost tho as "the hero" became the focus; Crash's death was ignored by the media, and like "Dagger," his death was "devour(ed)...in haste." That could have been the end, till last night...
Anyone familiar with the Germs song "Circle One" might have recognized this "reunion" as one of Crash's prophecies fulfilled. Crash was obsessed with circles and last night, a circle, his knowing "deep deep in my eyes, round round round, circle of lives" prophecy, was completed when the Beatles and Germs were AGAIN united. HOLY SHITBALLS!! Thirty-two years ago, the Germs and Beatles were united in death; last night they were united in life. This is the other side of that circle, the opposite side. Whoa. And again they were caught amid a whirlwind of media, as this was supposed to be some kinda Nirvana reunion...with (gasp) Paul McCartney singing. Uh...exactly as Lennon overshadowed Crash, Smear was overshadowed by McCartney's presence. OMG...is Darby Crash a prophet?!? Can you DIG THE PARALLEL!?! Or don't, maybe I'm totes imagining this reach so I could listen to the Germs all day.
