Those people were wrong. Also: the Jam weren't a punk band.

the last half of this statement is true for me.

I still like The Jam, though. especially after finding out about this pre-Tears For Fear project:

in the 1977 interview with Tom Snyder Paul Weller called his music new wave - considering the amount of shit punks threw at the term 'new wave' that always struck me as funny -
