Based on the
two songs they've released since last fall, I predict that this Belfast quartet's second full-length will rank among my favorites of 2013. They aren't doing anything radically different from
Crystal Stilts or
Soft Moon; there's just more spring to their step. I particularly love the pirouetting guitar pattern* on this track, which conveys more
progression than regression, though it's definitely hypnotic.
* With each passing year, Robert Smith's smeary style appears to be growing in influence.
Tough Love-Slumberland releases The New Life on Feb 26.
