What's the First Song You Listened to in 2013?

Posted by on Wed, Jan 2, 2013 at 2:12 PM

Me? "The House That Heaven Built" by Japandroids.

"Tell 'em all to go to Hell!"

Pretty good motto for 2013, I'd say.

How about you?

"With My Little Ukelele in My Hand" by YouTube's MarkAndHisUke channelling George Formby, Jr on speed. Turned out nicely.

Sad, but fucking beautiful.

I went to bed early, woke up, drove to the studio listening to a book about the OSS in Ceylon, so the first music I heard was my own dumb band while we mixed a new record. Ugh, not a promising start for the year.

I think it was the Blue Danube Waltz, for some reason...

Does this count as a "song"? At 10:00 a.m I listened to a Christmas-present cd, a late string quartet by the glorious Ludwig Van, as my droog Alex would have put it. Op .127, No. 12. Written in 1825, it was about 100 years ahead of its time. I didn't hear Auld Lang Syne or any of that shit because I was asleep at 11:45 pm on Dec. 31st.

Kokomo is the first one I was really aware of, though I know there were a lot of songs that preceded it.

Whatever the first song is in The Apple. "BIM Is on the Way" or something like that?

Whatever the first song on side one of "The Bob Dylan Songbook" by the Golden Gate Strings is. "A Hard Rain's Gonna Fall", I think. Awesome deep gravelly electric bass grinding away under a sprightly string orchestra -- heaven.

@19 "I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping" -- worst Beatle lyric ever. Unlistenable.

@4, I expect nothing less than Gangnam Style from you. I assume you got up and did the Macarena after that?

first song that I decided to listen to at home?
Coil's 'Sex With Sun Ra (pt 1)'

Otherwise, some lovely music from Midday Veil (live) I think, assuming I have my timing right.

Happy 2013.

first song I put on when I got back home on New Years was "Spring and By Summer Fall" by Blonde Redhead. everything prior to that kinda glopped together, but it was mostly techno that I wasn't terribly interested in anyway.

Unless you count background music on tv or video...the first song I heard in 2013 was "This Is How We Do It" by Montell Jordan...which was on a 90's dance compilation left in the car...and that's what played when packing the family into the car for New Year's Day dinner.

"...designated driver take the keys to my truck!"

@9, completely agree - love the Menzingers album. For song for 2013, Frank Ocean "Thinking About You." What is it about that album that makes it second or third best on everyone's lists for 2012? Talking about being out of Trojans seems like it should be an instant disqualifier.

I think it was "The Queen is Dead" by The Smiths, but don't hold me to that. It was yesterday and I don't tend to retain my daily playlist in my memory for that long.

I guess it would be "Cowboys From Hell" by Pantera, because it's near the top of Reddit right now and I already liked the song. Or does the jingle at the beginning of the Savage Lovecast count?
