LA label Friends of Friends has tapped two Seattle artists to represent what it considers the future of electronic music—right now—on its Show Me the Future compilation. Representing the 206 are DJAO (Alex Osuch) and Kid Smpl (Joey Butler). The former’s “Time to Stop Waiting” is a spare, contemplative head-nodder that boasts a delicately beautiful melody and is elevated by distant, tender vocalizations. The latter’s “Snowscape” evokes that most gentle, dew-dappled tracks on Aphex Twin’s Selected Ambient Works, Vol. II (“Stone in Focus” and “Lichen”), but adds some uncharacteristically ballistic, unpredictable beats to the beatific calm.
FOF’s imprimatur only confirms what many in this city have heard and believed over the last couple of years: These guys are major talents. You can catch them live tonight at Parnassus Cafe on the UW campus, along with Black Hat. More info here.
