The Stooges' "Burn" Lacks Shake Appeal

Iggy and the Stooges' "Burn" is the first song to hit the world from their forthcoming album, Ready to Die (out April 30 on Fat Possum). This LP marks the first time in 40 years that guitarist James Williamson and drummer Scott Asheton have played together with the legendary James Newell Osterberg Jr, on 1973's Raw Power (Mike Watt mans the bass in place of the late Ron Asheton). "Burn" isn't going to make anyone forget "Shake Appeal" (aka "Tight Pants"); it's meat-and-potatoes, Midwestern hard rock, barreling down the highway at the ordained speed limit, close to the Earth, giving off few sparks. Although it is by no means a dud, the track kind of sounds like a deep cut off Badmotorfinger or maybe Big Chief's Face. Let's hope there's hotter material on Ready to Die than "Burn."
