I had heard all the stories about Big Freedia—Kelly O is a big fan and, of course, over the last couple weeks Big Freedia made some waves by confusing the hell out of Postal Service fans—but I have never actually witnessed the New Orleans-based, twerk-obsessed bounce performer live. (And, in hindsight, I am actually kind of glad I missed seeing her open for the Postal Service if only because it would've broken my heart a little bit to be surrounded by a bunch of people being such jerks about something outside their comfort zone. Grow up, babies.)
A lot of the crowd, at least the folks near the front and around me, appeared to genuinely love it—not because of the spectacle, but because Big Freedia is a hell of a performer and if you love to dance, Big Freedia will definitely make you dance. (Okay, there were some people there just because BUTTS, but they were weeded out early on, after quickly getting more than an eyeful of what they came to see.) She invited people on stage for "Azz Everywhere" (video here), she riled everyone up with the call-and-response song "Excuse" ("I don't mean to be rude!"), and even other Block Party performers got in on the fun—members of Rose Windows crashed the stage to bounce along.
At the end of her set, now that the crowd was warmed up and ready to take on the rest of the Block Party, Big Freedia thanked everyone for continuing to support her and New Orleans, and mentioned she had a reality show launching on September 18 on Fuse TV (read a little more about it here). Everyone has a reality show these days, but a Big Freedia reality show is something I'd actually watch.
