Although it was only a modest drive away from Seattle, the Timber! Festival, staged by Artist Home in Tolt-MacDonald Park felt like a whole world away. After waking up in the car-camping wilderness, basking on the shores of the icy cool Snoqualmie river, festivalgoers had to brave the Galloping-Gertie-esque pedestrian footbridge (this adventure was maybe my favorite part of the whole operation) to access the stages where Doe-Bay-alumni types performed Friday night and all day Saturday. Most of the time, fans lingered on picnic blankets or frequented the beer gardens, observing the musical selections from a distance. Occasionally—for Cascadian forest spirits Kithkin, sunny indie pop dealers Ivan & Alyosha, electro-muppet headliners The Helio Sequence—a small crowd rose to their feet and approached the stage to get a closer look. As night fell, parents sent their kids on glowstick rave-sprints to assure sound sleep, while those with later bedtimes either gathered for singer-songwriter lullabies around the woodsy Campfire Stage (Noah Gundersen & family made for pleasant starlight listening) or returned to their own campsites, yurts, or campfires late into the evening.

For a first flight, the festival seemed to go remarkably smoothly with only a few modest bumps—e.g., more, or better-stocked, food trucks would've been very welcome; limited access to water refills at the distant mainstage and the absence of recycling bins at a vocally anti-plastic festival in a park seemed odd—but none of those marred the inaugural edition of this likely-to-return event. Even when things got a little raucous, it was still a decidedly relaxing affair that didn't even require crossing county lines.
