Even by contemporary "oldies" standards/playlists I reckon most folks wouldn't know Ms. LaVern Baker. Erm, perhaps y'all recognize "Jim Dandy?" Anyways, of all her great sides it's her song "Bubble Bee" I can't shake loose. There is so much fucking CUTENESS in this cheeky puttin' you down song.
Baker had a solid run of '50s R&B jams, but gave up music in the late '60s to become head of the Marine Corps Staff NCO club in the Philippines, she retuned to the US with work on Broadway in the late '80s, and died in 1997. Oh yeah, I'm also quite taken with her version of "Hurtin' Inside."
