We know Russian Circles as an instrumental trio (full disclosure, the band features Line Out contributor Brian Cook—hi, Brian!), but for their new song "Memorial"—the title track of their upcoming album—they've partnered up with singer Chelsea Wolfe. Her gorgeously haunted vocals perfectly accompany the somber tone of the song.
I generally liken Russian Circles' sound to that which you'd hear while running from a flesh-eating monster in the middle of the woods under a full moon at midnight, but "Memorial" is quite different from anything the band has done before—there's no nerve-wracking build up, there are no obviously climactic moments that sound like the monster sinking his teeth into your flesh. The song is much more subdued than the Russian Circles I'm used to, but it's still quite powerful in its simplicity. I can't wait to hear the rest of the record, which is out October 29th (and available for pre-order here).
