Prodigy Wiz: Henry Plotnick's Brilliant Pre-Pubescent Minimalism

This summer I had the privilege to write the press notes for an extraordinary album issued by the Portland-based label Holy Mountain. I’m old and jaded, so it takes a lot to jolt me into awe mode. But the music of Henry Plotnick managed that rare feat. You can read my account of this initial encounter with his debut album, Fields, here.
I’m taking this opportunity to alert Line Out’s readership to this under-the-radar stunner. Fields is sophisticated minimalist composition conceived and executed by an 11 year old (Henry’s now 12 and is, let us hope, working on the follow-up in sessions after middle school lets out). There are no tracks from Fields on YouTube, but you can get an idea of Plotnick’s bravura style from the live clip below. The boy’s already making college music students jealous…
