I have a couple regular resident club gigs where I play as a selector, but occasionally I get asked to play other events; the usual stuff: weddings, parties, art openings, and... (ahem) bar mitzvahs. I have decks and a mixer which always help me secure gigs, but I don't own a PA/powered speaks. Mainly 'cause I've found it's usually easier for the promotor/event planner to arrange the PA/sound gear. The folks in charge wanna be in charge—of EVERYTHING—so's not to have any loose ends, but then some are not sussed regarding the finer details of sound gear. It's those folks that tend to be like, "WHA?! Speakers? UH... I dunno what to do?" In those cases it seems I really need to own a PA/powered speakers just to make everything simpler. These are also the folks who don't wanna pay extra if I hafta rent the gear; as I'm essentially a contractor I'll tack on a little bit more to my fee for my extra leg work, but then I'm worried about pricing myself out of a gig. Which has happened a couple times, they were weddings so running into difficulty up front meant I was prolly better off NOT taking the gig. Anyways, I'm just curious if y'all lords of the ones & two's have any other advice (since everyone is a DJ) and/or do y'all all have your own PA/speakers set up or do you rent? Or... do y'all exclusively play at venues with in-house gear to avoid the bullshit stress!?
