I guess there is no love lost between ex-drummer Kevin Fennel, and everyone's favorite indie rock band, Guided By Voices. It's murky, but either he quit or was fired, right, so he listed his kit up in eBay™ for $55,000. It didn't sell. As to why he felt compelled to sell the kit, well, dig this quote from a Facebook page set up to promote the auction (the page has apparently now been taken down).
So this project was supposed to be all easy breezy. Put a little money in Kevin’s pocket so he could do nice things like set up a college nest egg for his two daughters, give him a chance to take a nice road trip and hangout with the super cool person who might could love his drums as much as he does. It’s taken a bit of a turn…He has now resigned from the band.
There was a screen shot of Fennell and GBV's Robert Pollard email exchange also posted on that Facebook page...
I hesitate to post the following email conversation between him and Pollard but Kevin feels that the truth of it is important. For the life of us, we cannot figure out why anyone would take exception to him selling something he owns.
If you care to read the pointed exchange click HEREfor a screen shot.
Godamn, the business of rock and roll sure sounds like it is some trite and nasty business. I'M GLAD I RETIRED!
Hmmm, I can't remember, was Fennell the same drummer that passed out on the sidewalk before a GBV show at Moe? I think it was in 1995 or '96... he passed out in the gutter at Pike and 10th.
