Conflicted Feelings on the New, Old, New Pixies

(Paramount) Oy. Well, let’s just all agree that the two EPs released by Pixies in the past few months have been, at best, forgettable, and, at worst, permanently reputation-tarnishing for one of the most beloved indie acts that ever was. That being said, and it upsets me that I even feel compelled to list these, they remain responsible for: “Debaser”; “Where Is My Mind?”; “Wave of Mutilation.” Guys: “Bone Machine.” Do Frank Black and co. still play these humongous, life-affirming songs live? My heart of hearts has to believe they do, because what the world needs now is not the inane, forgettable (and auto-tuned?!) puttering of “Andro Queen,” but the manic, tightly wound chaos of “Planet of Sound.” My friend claims “there are no Pixies without Kim,” and while I’m tempted to agree, I have to give them the benefit of the doubt. I mean, “Monkey Gone to Heaven.” I could go on.

Here's all our recommended music events—tonight, tomorrow, this weekend, and beyond...

I'm happy I got to see them a few times back in the day, because I just can't pay $50+ to see them now without Kim Deal.
