ahh Matt's not jealous. they made a lofi record because the recording gear they had at the time was cheap and that is how it turned out. I bet the recordings will get "cleaner and cleaner" as horseshit goes on.

I think this guy is just jealous. Both Psychedelic Horseshit AND Eat Skull have benefited from this recording technique (on record and in press). But what makes them more legitimate than anyone else who chooses to record this way?

I can understand his anger w/lazy journalistic tags and the idea that the finer points of their record will almost certainly be glossed over by writers in favor of their recording technique, but why feel more entitled to the benefits of a low fidelity recording than others?

It's not like ANYONE doing this right now is entirely original or taking any huge chances by issuing a "lo-fi" record, it's just that all of a sudden bigger media outlets haven chosen to give a shit about a few chosen bands.

And you know what? Fine. He'll be able to languish outside of Pitchfork's radar just as soon as they find a different bandwagon to jump on.
This is really funny.
I actually agree with pretty much everything he says too. I loved lo-fi the first time around in the '90s, but this new wave is so self-aware and contrived.
I can't remember which blog wrote about this lo-fi noise movement and said all of these bands were basically trying to mask vaguely melodic songs in layers of recording trickery, the same way pop singers do to cover weak material.
I mean, guided by voices got away with it because robert pollard shits golden hooks, and pavement could do it because they had interesting guitar parts, and sebadoah could do it because of their emotional acuity. But wavves plays crappy punk no one would give a second listen to if it weren't caked in fuzz and his lame haircut. vivian girls sound like the shaggs with zero charm or quirk. they make a conscious decision to sound that bad, and it just rings so hollow with me. underneath the studio 'no-magic' you have mediocre songs by mediocre musicians.
