If it wasn't number one don't play it. Yeah I noticed the sudden change and the repetition right away. I'm not mad or furious as some folks here but I am disappointed. I was in the business for 35 years and you know what? That's the way it goes. Formats are a never ending circle and they play like musical chairs. This week oldies, next week top forty, next week news/talk. Who are we today? Money spins the wheel like listeners spin the dial. As stated KCMQ was great for an expanded music list and much less repetition by playing many songs that may not have been number one but are just as familiar and comfortable to many listeners as the number one's. Before the change how often did you think "Cool, I haven't heard that in years, great tune" Well, it will likely be years before you will hear it again. Common sense vacated radio years ago and it plays a big part in why changes are so short lived today. Yup, sad. But not as sad as the awful jingle package.
When something is good it seems to disappear just as quickly. Case in point KMCQ. It WAS the coolest station in Seattle. To get your oldies fix, go online & check out KISN on line radio. They play about everything that was released between 1954 & 1976 & claim to have the worlds largest record library with over 94,000 titles. This is KMCQ COULD have become. A couple of people in the article mentioned listening to KBCS now. I have a show on KBCS called One Step Beyond which plays 60's & 70's soul & the music it has influenced & continues to influence. You'll hear known & unknown soul from the era as well as The Rascals, Stones, Small Faces, Sharon Jones, Allen Stone & more. Right now I'm having subs sit in for me while I recover from surgery. I'll be back in mid Sept. But listen anyway. The show airs Saturday nights from 8-10 PM & streams live on line.

I will admit, "Heart and Soul" is pretty great.

"In 1984, Ray Parker Jr. was signed by the producers of Ghostbusters to develop the film's title song. Later that year, Huey Lewis and the News sued Parker, citing the similarities between the "Ghostbusters" song and their earlier hit "I Want a New Drug". According to Huey Lewis and the News, this was especially damaging to them since "Ghostbusters" was so popular, rising to number one on the charts for three weeks. Parker and Lewis later settled out of court. Huey Lewis has stated that his experiences with the producers of Ghostbusters may have been indirectly responsible for getting his band involved with the movie Back to the Future.

In the 2001 Behind the Music special, Huey Lewis stated: "The offensive part was not so much that Ray Parker Jr. had ripped this song off, it was kind of symbolic of an industry that wants something—they wanted our wave, and they wanted to buy it. ... [I]t's not for sale. ... In the end, I suppose they were right. I suppose it was for sale, because, basically, they bought it." As a result of this statement, Parker Jr. filed a suit against Lewis, claiming he violated the settlement's confidentiality agreement and seeking an unspecified amount of compensatory and punitive damages as well as attorney fees.

An issue of Premiere Magazine would later feature an anniversary article about the movie Ghostbusters. In that article, the filmmakers admit to using the song "I Want A New Drug" as temporary background music in many scenes. They then said that they had made an offer to Huey Lewis and the News to write the main theme, but they declined. The filmmakers then provided Ray Parker Jr film footage—with the Huey Lewis song in the background—to aid Parker in writing the theme song."

So I spent a bunch of time looking at weird radio industry forums to figure out what the deal was with 104.5 and the reason for the format change.
The reason 104.5 didn't have any commercials and the magical playlist is the owners basically bought it to "flip it" by doing a bunch of radio industry things like changing the city of license and swapping frequencies. This all took several years and by the time it was ready to sell the economy was in the pits and terrestrial radio's future was growing increasingly bleak.
Now, the owners (First Broadcasting) haven't found a buyer but have instead brought in a new operator, some company out of Anchorage, perhaps to make it more appealing to potential buyers or to finally monetize their property.
I don't know anything about this stuff so by all means let me know if you work in the industry and I am misunderstanding the situation.
