Lots of people in the crowd were clapping extremely loudly and yelling 'yaaaaaay!'. It was more than just blind approval of whatever was on stage.

She's simultaneously been #1 in US and Canada iTunes, and she was the first and only classical pianist ever to debut at #1 on the Billboard classical chart. That's better than 'fussy'.

@2 - in Seattle the crowd roars its approval regardless of whether the performance merits it or not - so, unfortunately, that's not a guide one way or the other...

I'm more of a "if they playing itself is good, you don't need to add any flashy physical gestures" kinda guy - but it can be kinda fun (Lang Lang is a bit stylish in his playing also (is that a better term than fussy?).

I totally agree about the orchestra being great.

I disagree about Lim. Given, I'm not a classic piano expert. I liked how into the music she was. Is it better when someone is boring and just sits there, with no life or expression? I didn't think she over-did anything, and from the ovation the crowd gave her, it seemed like everyone overwhelmingly liked it, a lot. She kind of blew me away.

Define fussy playing for me. Or describe how you thought her playing was fussy.

Whatever ms Lim's pedigree, I would disagree that her's the high point of last night's performance. While technically proficient I found her playing fussy and her stylings overly melodramatic. Her encore sounded like a has-been's piano-bar riff on a TV theme song.

That said, the orchestra was wonderful throughout. The Stravinsky was fascinating and the Mozart in particular was excellent, and are well worth sitting through the Fuss Panther's "I'm going to play this next note in ... ... ... three seconds, just to show you all how much verve I have" Mendelssohn to hear.
