Poster of the Week: Poster by Chris Rollins

Two things about this poster: (1) It's always refreshing to come across one of Chris Rollins's linocuts amid the glut of cookie-cutter rock posters out there, and (2) Tokyoidaho is my new favorite band name. Look up Chris on gigposters.com to see more of his unique and charming work.

Got a great poster we should consider for Poster of the Week?
Send a high-resolution, color .jpg (no more than 1MB) to potw@thestranger.com.
The event your poster advertises must be at least 10 days in the future in order for us to consider it.

Brazilian illustrator Butcher Billy has a series of drawings featuring post-punk and new-wave icons recontextualized as superheroes. The set includes Morrissey, Siouxsie Sioux, John Lydon, Ian Curtis, Devo, Robert Smith, and Billy Idol recast as comic-book characters you probably read about as a youth. Gawk at the well-wrought pictures here.

Dunno about you, but this seems to me like a very Derek Erdmaniacal project.

Tip: Jason Pettigrew

There are tons of great posters on the street this week, but none as striking and unique as this one by Julia Bork at Mint Design (mint-usa.com). Also, if you haven't heard Zebra Hunt's new EP, Beaches, check it out at zebrahunt.bandcamp.com.

Neumos has been kicking ass in the poster department lately, as regular POTW readers may have noticed. Here's a fine example by local designer Matt Harvey, whose work can be found at mharvey.net.

Vampire Weekend Light Cars on Fire, Piss Off Car Lovers

In their new video for the song "Diane Young," Vampire Weekend destroy a couple cars, specifically Saab 900s. The band bought the cars from two different owners, without disclosing what they were planning on doing with the vehicles, and now some car enthusiasts are pissed.

Here's the video:

Of couse material things get destroyed all the time in the name of art, and perhaps it would've been more responsible to use cars that weren't running, or just CG that shit and then give the car to someone who could really use it, but alas, that is not what happened. The cars were torched, they're gone forever, whether it was a dick move or not.

So does this make Vampire Weekend complete jerks?

Let's have a poll!

[ Comment on this story ]

Good people of Line Out, here is the album cover for Utah reggae band Wasnatch's Front to Back. Their music, sadly, does not live up to the promise of the artwork. What could, really? But I bet Wasnatch tear it up on the Utahn reggae circuit.

I admire Jesse Codling's ability to pack a lot of information on a poster and make it look like something you actually want to read. He's pretty good with the colors and textures, too. See more of Jesse's work at foryoungmoderns.com.

The Great Pet Portraits (+ More) Of Zerrin Koch

I recently stumbled onto the work of Portland's Zerrin Koch through a friend. Koch makes a wide variety of things in a recognizable modern style, but it's her pet portraits that I fell hard for. She has a gift for allowing cute and serious to mingle in a way that avoids preciousness, and the resulting likenesses are spot-on. Oh, and her prices are really agreeable.

Where are you from / where did you grow up?

I was born in Seattle and moved to Olympia around 1994/1995, when I was in the 4th grade. I lived there until I graduated from Evergreen in 2008 with a BA in "visual arts" (quotes because we don't have majors at Evergreen), and then decided to move down to Portland because it's where most of my friends and sister were living.

Zerrin Koch

Stella Peeg

What pets did you have as a child? What pets do you have now?

I grew up with mostly cats. The first one I remember was Fonzie, then there was Beazus and Mina and Nuzzle. Then there was Snookie. Then there was my precious baby, Pootie, and then Nino and Nula. All of them have passed away now, except for Pootie and Nula, who live with my mom in Olympia (I feel too guilty to move Pootie to the big city when she has the Olympia countryside to roam.) I also grew up with Barred Rock and Araucana chickens, who can be hilarious, and we had a parakeet once which my dad named Larry Bird, but no one called him that. We had a rabbit or two, and a hamster named MC Hamster who was mean and we gave him away. And when I was really little, we had a sheltie named Bosco, who ran away all the time. But I'm a pretty big cat lady. Oh, and we raised two orphaned baby squirrels when I was in high school. I love animals.

What materials do you use to make your pet portraits?

I usually ask for an average of 3 good portrait quality photos to work from, then I sketch them out with a mechanical pencil onto 100% recycled bogus paper, after that I start drawing in more details and shape with a variety of Prismacolor colored pencils, I eventually add more color with some Windsor & Newton watercolors, and then go back over with colored pencils.

Zerrin Koch

Doctor O

How many have you done so far?

I think I started painting animals a few years ago, and did practice portraits of animals I found on the internet. I've painted my cat a bunch of times, and have done quite a few more of friend's pets for presents. So for personal pet portraits, I've probably done a little over a dozen, and for non-personal pictures (like animals I thought were cute on the internet) maybe like 40 or something? I have an art Tumblr because the Tumblr I started for my art got consumed by my Tumblr addiction. That's where I tried to put my good pictures of previous portraits, I didn't get a scanner or digital camera until last year, and was using my computer camera to take pictures.

Zerrin Koch

Pig Pig

What do you like most about drawing people pets?

I think I love drawing pets because I love animals so much. I'm really awkward with people, but really comfortable with animals, plus having animals around, or talking about animals is a really good icebreaker. I like pet portraits because you get to talk to the owner of the animal about their pet and learn their pet's name and hear stories, and it's really fun. They're usually as passionate about their animal as I am. I'd imagine it's like having a baby. I've totally been working, and some co-workers and I have pulled out photos of our cats and just rambled about them for, like, 15 minutes instead of doing our job. Plus I really like drawing fur.

What do you like to listen to / watch while working on art?

When I'm working, I listen to a bunch of stuff. A lot of mix-tapes, records, stuff off my computer. I have a ton of weird 60's garage rock/rockabilly/pop stuff, like anything off of Lux and Ivy's old radio show, or songs that would be in a John Waters soundtrack. I also have a friend who hosts Ditch Digger Radio on KBOO here in Portland. She also works at Mississippi Records and hooks me up with some amazing stuff. I also love me 80's early 90's stuff like the Ramones, the Smiths, Morrissey, the Cure, anything good, goth and synthy. Also, the Damned, Joy Division, New Order, the Misfits, Danzig, Alaska Y Los Pegamoides. Sometimes stuff from my 70's Bollywood collection. Lots of old lounge stuff. Opera. I think I listened to old J-Pop tapes I made when I was 13, when I did your portraits. I have a wide variety of tastes. I think I've listened to the song "Gidget Goes Hawaiian" by James Darren A LOT this week. I usually don't watch anything while painting because I can't concentrate as well. But that's what crocheting is for!

Zerrin Koch

Yoshi

Is art your main source of income? If not, what is?

I'm currently not employed, but I'm looking for a suitable job, and am living off my savings in the meantime. I'm also figuring out how to sell stuff online, like starting my Etsy account.

Do you have hobbies? If so, what are they?

I like to consider myself a crafter more than an artist. I think my whole life is a hobby. I do a lot of crocheted stuff, like purses, stuffed animal backpacks, stuffed animals, and imaginary taxidermy animal heads. I got really into shell art for a while, which led to a bean portrait of Bruce Springsteen, which remains unfinished because I ate the beans I was using. Pasta art. I love embroidery and using felt and sequins, someday I want to make a nudie suit. I love cooking. I took culinary classes for two years in high school. I used to make music, I was in an all girl, seven member rap group called Gyunyunyu and the Science Fun Station, and I had a midi synth pop solo project called Revolt and Virgina after that, which I started off by making songs that were based off of romance novels, then drifted to other songs. Iwant to get back into that. I listen to a lot of music, and watch a ton of TV shows and movies for someone who doesn't have the internet.

Derek Erdman

Yoshimi

What are your favorite foods?

This one is really difficult. Curries of various countries, pizza, burritos, sushi train, seafood, all veggies, most fruit, cheese, breakfast, eggs, pasta, avocados, everything.

What is better, Seattle or Portland?

I think both have their merits. I have a ton of friends and family in Seattle and love a lot of things about it. It's bigger and I think there's a wider variety of things to do. I actually consider moving there a lot, but I have panic attacks and get severe road rage over traffic. Portland is good in a lot of ways too. I feel like it's more spacious, and there are roses growing everywhere. Plus, no sales tax. you don't have to pump your own gas, but I feel like it's popularity at the moment is making it less unique and pushing out a lot of cool things, like condos where there used to be venues. I like Seattle for having a get-up-and-go attitude, and Portland for having a I'm-sleeping-in-and-having-a-late-afternoon-breakfast kind of 'tude. It's a constant battle!

Thanks a lot, Zerrin Koch!

I recently acquired this excellent Stephanie poster, made by Jess Rees for the 2012 CHBP:

Derek Erdman

Poster by Jess Rees

While looking through her online work, I found tons of other great designs. Here's one for an upcoming show at Hollow Earth Radio:

Jess Rees

Also, a personal note!

Here is the latest poster I made. This one if for my boyfriend's synthpop band (that I also perform in). They are called Foreign Friends. Here is the link to their EP that just came out: foreignfriends.bandcamp.com If you know of anyone that needs poster design, let me know!

Here's something that sounds great: a fine art tribute to the heroes (and non-heroes) of professional wrestling, all painted on black velvet. The Iron Sheik tangling with a gas pump? Hacksaw Jim Duggan atop a pile of wrecked AMC Pacers? Giant Haystacks as Elvis Presley? THE SKY COULD VERY WELL BE THE LIMIT!

LTD. ART GALLERY PRESENTS: VELVET LEGENDS OF WRESTLING
a Black Velvet Painting tribute to the Heroes and Villains of the Squared Circle

Friday and Saturday this weekend and Fridays and Saturdays for the month of February, FRED Wildlife Refuge will be hosting FHYSICAL GRAFFITI, an audio/visual dance happening with installations by street artists Weirdo, Baso Fibonacci, NKO, and Kevin Krow. Original musical landscapes are mixed live by Kirk Huffman (Kay Kay & His Weathered Underground/Wild Orchid Children), which include material from Mad Decent's Schlachthofbronx. Sari Breznau (Circus Contraption) also contributes, and there’s a full band, with special guest New Orleans bounce artist Vockah Redu.

10PM doors – 3AM close. RSVP Required: HERE. 128 Belmont Ave East, across from Captain Black’s. Picture yourself inside Andy Warhol’s balls staring off a cliff 500-feet high at a kaleidoscopic ocean, with aerial artists. Kirk Huffman and Chris Snell spoke:

What is this Fhysical Graffiti? There’s so much shit going on. Music, dancers, and visuals. What’s happening? Is it all a metaphor for sex?

Kirk: Anything at any given time can be a metaphor for sex at FRED. I've had trouble explaining the evening to folks myself. I'll let Chris give you his grand idea breakdown, but I will say that you will be thoroughly entertained and in a way that is unlike anything going on in Seattle right now. Side note: this shit is ideal for psychedelics, just a heads up.

Chris: It's an enormous conceptual-art piece with visual, both painted and digital, music and dance elements all combined to create this experience we are calling Fhysical Graffiti. To put a cherry on top we brought bounce poster boy from New Orleans, internationally renowned artist/dancer, VOCKAH REDU. Dance and aerial artists include Liza Rose, Paris Original, Trojan Original, and Amy Clem, with choreography by Ellie Sandstrom, Liza Rose, Amy Clem, and Fae Phalen. Massive 60 x 20 projected visual wall designs and installations were create by Jonathan Womack.

Bruce Dugdale

Kirk, for the show, you remix music from Schlachthofbronx (MIA producer). What’s it like? What was your process for it? Do you play live during the show with a full band? Or do you DJ it?

Kirk: The Schlachthofbronx stuff, at least from my perspective on the tracks I remixed, incorporates elements of break, Miami bass and bounce, but there's heavy Calypso/Caribbean music influences, too, that give it its own uniqueness. I was given all the individual stems from the original sessions from Schlachthofbronx's Carimbo EP and chopped them up into new compositions and remixes. Sari Breznau and Scott MacPherson both wrote horn arrangements over a good deal of the remixes and play live with a band, including drummer, baritone sax, tenor/alto sax, tuba, trumpet and synths that play with the tracks.

Basically, because the show is one long production that operates with lighting/visual/sound cues, I'm operating a large 90-minute ProTools session with click track sends to a headphone splitter for a couple band members vs. building the set each night with triggers in Traktor or Ableton.

How did you go about composing? What guidelines did Chris give you?

I composed from the raw files sent from Schlachthofbronx, and I added a lot of my own samples. On certain tracks, I added real bass, percussion, and keyboard elements. I composed the tracks in ProTools and then had them mixed by Elan Wright (Kung Foo Grip, Riff Raff, SOL) in Logic. There weren't a lot of guidelines going into the project, I remember at first that the project idea sounded really grandiose, but vague, too. As things progressed, Chris sent me a few tracks he liked as well as the Schlafchthofbronx material, a handful of Vockah's recordings to marinate on. A lot of the music was inspired by descriptive words we all used and whatever was going on with the visuals/dancers or horn lines.

Have you done this kind of remixing before?

The remixing and composing electronic music stuff I've been doing as a hobby on the side for a while, but have been involved with it a lot more recently since I spent 6 - 7 weeks last year in LA working with producers/songwriters who primarily work in this genre/medium. I was able to observe and pick up a lot of things that enabled the Fhysical Graffiti music to be produced more comfortably.

What is the difference between a “musical landscape” and a “song”?

Um, I don't know, one has trees and mountains and the other is just bummin' on the corner? I guess I think of musical landscapes as something Sergio Leone-sounding. Music made to enhance something visual rather than standing alone on its own.

At any point does anyone twirl from their teeth or hair? I went to the circus when I was a kid and a girl was twirling around on a rope by her mouth. It scared the shit out of me.

Yeah, the stuff the dancers are doing is fucking nuts. Pulleys, ropes 'n' harnesses, chandeliers. I keep saying, “Y’all are gonna hurt yourselves.” [Laughs]

Fhysical Graffiti happens Friday and Saturday this weekend, and Fridays and Saturdays in February. 10PM doors.

Bruce Dugdale

Flatland by Katie Kate

Back in February of 2011 I was lucky enough to catch a show titled Brief Encounters at the Richard Hugo House on Capitol Hill. The show featured writers and musical acts on the same bill and prompted them to talk about brief encounters they'd had.

Writers in residence at Hugo House debuted some poetry, and read short stories, Matthew Simmons who's next collection of short stories is due out in May 2013 (pre-order here) spoke so eloquently I can still see him standing at the podium.

The musicians followed with brief sets. Jason Dodson (The Maldives) played a solo, sit down, acoustic set of new music (so fresh he brought the lyrics with him to read), Laura Love played her brand of folk/funk/bluegrass protest jams, and a then little more than local celebrity named Macklemore got up and did all of the above. He told a short story about waiting in line for a Kanye show in New Mexico, read some of his beat-meets-slam style poetry, then performed a set of songs he'd been working on.

This coming February the prompt is Strong Female Leads. On the bill is Seattle's own Bad Amazon Katie Kate, joining poet Arlene Kim, novelist Patricia Smith, and catoonist/zinester Kelly Froh, and if it's anything like the last Hugo House music-meets writing experiment, it's gonna be worth every penny. Seats are extremely limited in this place, but it's comfy, and comes highly recommended.

That there jacket was painted by local-boy-done-good (and Stranger joke-maker) Derek Erdman. I asked him three questions about the creation of this Ellen jacket.

How long did it take you to paint this jacket?
About four hours.

What do the 13 stars symbolize?
The apparitions of the Virgin of Fatima in 1917 were claimed to occur on the 13th day of six consecutive months. Oh wait, that's just how many would fit.

What's the going rate for a custom-painted jean jacket and do celebrities get a discount?
$200. NO CELEB DISCOUNTS. Except for Parker Posey.

Erdman's website is right over here.

La Luz guitar player & excellent artist Shana Cleveland has a great art show at Cairo right now, tonight is the last night to see it.

The show is a wide array of portraits. Most of them are spooky, all of them are compelling. Cairo closes at 7pm tonight and the show comes down tomorrow night, so this would probably be a really good thing for you to do tonight.

More portraits after the jump!

Two things I find undeniably pleasing: halftone reproductions of old photos (they don't have to be ladies in their underthings, but it helps) and the combination of black and a single color. I'm usually partial to magenta, but designer Derek Vander Griend makes an excellent case here for yellow.

Few designers in town have a style as distinctive as Jesse Codling's, with its elegantly simple type, bold geometric shapes, and rich colors. I'm a sucker for that weathered/distressed look, too, and Jesse does it without making me think of the '90s even a little bit. Check out more of Jesse's work at foryoungmoderns.com.

Do you like balloons? Do you like Venn diagrams? Do you like crudely drawn block letters? If you answered yes to at least two of these questions, then it's likely that you'll be as charmed by this poster as I was.

Bargain Bin Blashpehmy is a Tumblr devoted to featuring defaced covers of LPs scavenged from bargain bins. As one of the world’s foremost haters of Christmas music, I have derived great joy from this site’s recent spate of besmirched holiday-music albums. I’m no Satan worshiper, but occasionally, in cases like these, I have to give the devil his due. Check out the unholy vandalism here.

Here's another great design for Vermillion by Aric Atienza. Atienza is pretty damn prolific at the moment, so you can see his work all over town. Look for more at gigposters.com.
