The 3rd annual Closer Electronic Music Festival kicks off this weekend, June 20th – 23rd, in Portland, Oregon. Set in the city center and spread out among Portland’s most crucial venues, the festival has grown in scale and this year’s lineup is bursting with talent from up and down the West Coast and beyond. Techno legend John Tejada headlines, showcasing a full-on hardware live set, while other highlights include Planet E’s Monty Luke, Lars Behrenroth, Masa Ueda, Bryan Zentz, and Seattle’s own J. Alvarez aka 214, to name but a few in the 50+ strong lineup.

Closer will also feature a variety of workshops and panel discussions relating to music production and navigating the industry, as well as a free park party held on Sunday afternoon. If you’re heading down early, be sure to swing by Crush on Thursday, as I (Ctrl_Alt_Dlt) have the honor of playing the kickoff event alongside some of Portland’s finest locals. If last year’s installment is any indication, we’re in for an action-packed and sleepless weekend.

Full event details and schedule at Closerpdx.com

Wisely, the club had relegated the legal drinkers to the mezzanine, turning the main floor over to more dance-prone all-ages set. The band, whose Surf Noir EP remains among my favorite local releases, started as a summer-crystallizing electro-duo Reed Juenger & Jordan Koplowitz on the University of Washington campus and later swelled to a four-piece with tons of guest appearances for last year's Palace Garden, and has since reconfigured yet again to a lean tour-friendly trio of Juenger plus acoustic drummer Jarred Katz and vocalist Tom Eddy.

Whereas their records are synesthetic computery kaleidoscopic compositions, the reconfiguration to a touring trio left most of the songs feeling looser and much more centered around Eddy's vocals and guitar—the difference between a sonic beachy headphones cocoon and a loungey sunset cabana party. Or maybe it was just an effect of standing too close to the monitor. In any case, the show was incredibly fun with the full downstairs frothed into a dancing mess of revelry and crowd-planking for most of the set. It felt like celebratory send-off: Friday was apparently their last local show "for a long time."
After winding down a west coast tour they're planning to ship off to Laos for a couple months to dream up a follow-up full length album. Never fear, though, before leaving to write, regroup, and record, they'll be hanging out at the Barboza for a residency of summer DJ spins.
A few more fogged-out photos after the jump.

Heartland Gallery was hoppin' for a Monday night, which was not surprising, considering the touring act: Colleen Green, bringing with her a brand new album titled Sock it to Me.

Trevor Crump

Blooper did not mess up.

After a somewhat stressful, but ultimately WORTH-IT first-time Car2Go experience (I am so done with parking tickets! You hear me Municipal Court?? Confidential to Municipal Court: I did move after two hours! What is your problem? I'm going to start spelling it Munici Court, because there is NO PAL THERE.), I walked in as Blooper was setting up, and I was glad to finally get a chance to see them. Fronted by Adriano Santi, who wrote a pile of songs by himself before putting together a live band, Blooper reminds me of the first gulp of catchy rock n' roll someone's way cool older brother played when summers were suddenly about complicated social interactions and discovering what makes the opposite-sex tick. Mix together scraggly garage jams with bright, sugar-pop and the hook from the Beatles' "I'm Happy Just to Dance with You." And red-flavored Kool-Aid. And sunscreen.

Trevor Crump

Sorry, White Fang!

I missed Portland's White Fang due to some neighborhood shenanigans, but I did make it back for Colleen's set. While Colleen seems to play solo more often than not, I was excited to see that she had brought along her sometimes-backing-musician Marisa of Mannequin Pussy—my first and favorite CG show had Marisa and Colleen side by side, dark sunglasses and hair, guitar and bass. That must have been over two years ago at the Sunset? DANG. Anyway, Marisa is the perfect addition to Colleen's live set of simple, extra fuzzed and melodic heartache tunes. Her trusty drum machine was balanced better than it was the last time I saw her in Austin (a leetle tooo loud), and though the dancing was minimal, the tightly packed crowd still seemed to be enjoying themselves in a stoned, captivated way.

Trevor Crump

Colleen Green did not cover "Sunglasses at Night."

Colleen's new songs sounded great—"You're So Cool" and "Darkest Eyes" were especially satisfying, since I've been listening to the recordings regularly since Sock it to Me came out a few months ago.

I heart Heartland, the end.

During my most recent travels, I was fortunate enough to run into my ol' gal pal, Margaret at a local pub. You may know her as the Iron Lady, the longest serving British Prime Minister of the 20th century and only woman to have held that office. To me, she was Margie aka Large n' In-Charge Marge. She was a brilliant woman who thought outside the box and was known for her uncompromising politics and leadership style. She loved Wes Anderson films, playing dominoes, and a good rugby match. Most of our time together was spent photocopying images to make punk-rock style music posters. Sadly, her time came to an end on Monday, suffering from a stroke at the young age of 87. I was lucky enough to look inside her purse before it was too late. Rest in power, sweet Maggie.

<img src="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/aeaf/1365712996-margaret_purse.jpg" alt="Margaret, 87. Leather bag. 10:20am. Zeitgeist Pub, London." title="Margaret, 87. Leather bag. 10:20am. Smith

Margaret, 87. Leather bag. 10:20am. Zeitgeist Pub, London.

What kind of bag is that?
Oh heavens.. I haven't the slightest idea. It is darling isn't it, darling?

Yes. Fabulous! How long have you had it?
I've had it since 1983. I bought it as a gift for myself after being re-elected for the third time. I don't normally treasure such spoils, but what was a lady to do?

Do you think a purse is important in fashion?
I highly believe a woman has certain powers that a man cannot resist. My handbag is something I can always have in my hands to remind everyone who we are and what we stand for. Being powerful is like being a lady… if you have to tell people you are, you aren’t.

Can we take a look inside?
Well, sure, my dear!

• Pearl earrings
• Green tea bags
• Black tea bags
• Eary Grey tea bags
• Chamomile tea bags
• Mr. Tea bags

You sure do love tea.
Yum! And crumpets!
I hope your purse can provide more than just a good tea bagging.

• Keys
• iPhone 5 with flag case
• Altoids
• Pickled eggs, pickled by Queen Elizabeth II
• Vitamin D
• Pepto Bismol

For the eggs?
Always a must! I'd rather lose my wallet than not have my Pepto.

G. Smith

"I'd rather lose my wallet than not have my Pepto."

• Burberry wallet
• Gucci sunglasses
• USB drive
• Biro ballpoint pen
• Soccer ball pendant

Are you a big fan of football?
On some level, yes. The sport is great for England. I once had an affair with a nice young boy, Davey. He played football all over the world and was revered as one of the greats. I cannot resist an athletic man in short shorts.

• Chapstick
• Sugar cookie
• Kidney pie wrapped in foil
• Buzzcocks keychain
• Yves Saint Laurent elle. le nouveau parfum
• Benefit BAD Gal Lash mascara

It seems you like to smell good and look good.
You do know I was the first woman to distract The Royal Guard.

• Joy Division button
• Pack of Capri Cigarettes
• Princess Diana Zippo
• White bandana
• Tums
• Banana
• Wooden spoon

Why the utensil?
Wooden spoons are great. You can either use them to prepare food. Or, if you can't be bothered with that, just a write a number on it and walk into a pub…

On that note, I must leave this pub. Thank you for your time, Baroness.
Cheerio!

I'd planned to stop by Easy Street's last night in Queen Anne on Friday and maybe catch some Yo La Tengo, but I knew I was too late even before I left the house. The 'net was going crazy with photos—the crowd gathered outside, the windows all fogged up, the piles of music outside for cheap.

We did stop by for a quick farewell but the cold was only bearable for a minute, so we headed to Add-a-Ball in Fremont to get rid of some quarters. Oh man, have you ever played Bride of Pinbot? It's a pinball game featuring a super-sexualized lady robot who makes hilarious "ooooohs" and "aaaaahs" when you get the ball right. Ahem. Moving on.

Lacking in a real plan for the evening, we knew it was time to play Ballard Roulette—a game that started as Funhouse Roulette (roll up to the Funhouse on a whim and see whatever band is playing no matter what). More after the jump!

The Sunset Tavern looked pretty hoppin' so we walked in and were greeted by a whoosh of fun danciness that turned out to be the last song in the Redwood Plan's set. Since I missed most of their show, I asked two enthusiastic Redwood fans named Brooke and Stormy to describe it.

Please describe the Redwood Plan's music.
Stormy: I would say the easy option is to describe them as dance punk.
Brooke: Yeah I think they're like electro punk, I don't know if that's correct, but I love what they do with the synthesizer and insistent dance beats. I can never not dance to them.

Is this an ideal venue to see the Redwood Plan?
Brooke (to Stormy): Tell her what you said earlier.
Stormy: The Sunset is my security blanket. It's my favorite spot to see local music.

Anything else you'd like to add?
Brooke: Redwood Plan kicks fucking ass, how about that?!

Then I asked the band for a photo right when they were trying to load out, which is always the best time to ask a band for anything! They were very friendly and told me their album release show would be at Neumos on February 15th with Vox Mod.

The Redwood Plan, trying to load out.

The next band was Hounds of the Wild Hunt and the crowd was SO STOKED. So stoked in fact, a girl whipped me in the face with her jean jacket on accident when she while she was crazy dancing. There was a lot of passion going on at the Sunset, but they ran out of pizza so we had to move on.

Davidson Hart Kingsbery

The Tractor Tavern was filled with cowboy hats and boots and really nice people. The band playing when we walked in were called Davidson Hart Kingsbery (and according to the sign, Mark Pickerel and his Praying Hands had also played that evening—wasn't that guy in Screaming Trees??) and the crowd was loving them. The six gentlemen on stage played raspy sweet country/western tunes that the whole bar was dancing along to (like, awesome couple dances that I don't know the names of).

I met a woman in the bathroom who was dressed like a prairie fairy and had a star tattooed on her face. She told me that my hair was "real punk rock, sister" and gave me a hi-five.

Edge

Legend tells of a drummer whose talent for remaining upright and functional behind his drum kit after inhaling copious amounts of weed and downing what could amount to a kiddie pool full of Pabst Blue Ribbon, was known throughout the land. His resume consists of being in some of the finer underground punk and metal bands in the Seattle area. Ben McIsaac, the lab rat of drummers, has never been one to commit to a single band. He's always entertaining three or four at a time thus the long running, annual blooper reel event humbly known as Ben Fest, which pits all of McIsaac's bands on one quaint bill for one destructive evening.

Here comes the sad news, Ben McIsaac will be relocating from our little rain-city of a village to the glamorous, yet roach-ridden drags of Brooklyn, New York. Now before you “Booooooo” and throw your rotten tomatoes, you have to hear my good news! All four of McIsaac's bands are burning a hole in his pocket and there's still time for one final Ben Fest! You want crusty, thrash punk? Have a friend babysit your bandana'd dog and get to the show on time for the reunion/demolition of Enforcer. Hopefully they'll bust out their fierce rendition of Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer." Next we have the catchy pop/punk coating over a surf rock candied center which is Sweet Pups. Erica Brunner (McIsaac's better half) lays down the tasty guitar riffs, coaxing your feet to move to the effervescent beat. Did I mention there's a fucking keytar?

Then there's this douchebaggery of a hardcore band called Don Peyote. I highly recommend you save your choice heckling and empty cans purely to hurl at these folks. My only request is that you take it lightly on the guitar player as she, me, is currently undergoing cosmetic surgery to become the next Vanna White and my botox injection sights are still healing. At this point in the evening, those in the gambling community can place their bets on how much longer McIsaac will be able to stay upright under his own power. Perfect timing for one of the most beer-scented, forked tongued, almost seven years strong straight up punk bands, Shit Gets Smashed to take to the streets and play their LAST SHOW EVER. It's gonna be a slobber knocker and it's all going down this Saturday, the 12th at the Black Lodge. Come bid Ben McIsaac bon voyage and bring a plastic poncho, things may get a little weird.

Luckily I found my new favorite Karaoke place on Capitol Hill, Lucky 8's China House (next to Chop Suey.) Karaoke happens every Sunday, plus they serve super delicious organic Chinese food without MSG all late so you don't get food-tired while you are drinking a million cheap beers. The lovely staff didn't even get mad at me when I was the annoying drunk person who accidentally broke a beer bottle during the singing of Paula Cole's hit "Where Have All The Cowboys Gone."

What was the name of the child born and raised in the post office line while Utilikilt Man pulled packages out of his hippie cart?

The first hot shot to answer correctly will receive the following incredible prizes:

· A Justin Beiber singing toothbrush (plays the songs "Baby" and "U Smile")!
· A $4-off coupon for See's Candy (if you buy $40 worth, that is)!
· A rose necklace I found in Cal Anderson Park a long time ago!
· Two cough drop filled with cough suppressing goo!
· Birthday candles!
· TWO perfume samples!
· A pumpkin spice lollipop (that tastes like Bath & Body Works)!

This post is part of a series to compare the best haunted houses in the Seattle area. Be on the lookout for others in the coming days. Share your opinions in the comments, if you'd like! This post comes from our dispatched haunt reporter Lacey Swain of the Coconut Coolouts and Charming Snakes.

Kitsap County is the place to be for authentic Halloween scares, and the Scrapyard Massacre is the perfect place to begin a haunted evening. After a ten or so mile drive from the ferry terminal in Bremerton you arrive at a real live auto wrecking yard in Belfair, WA that becomes a thrilling, mostly outdoors maze of frights.

This year's storyline involves some sort of zombie apocalypse quarantine situation where food is scarce so folks have resorted to eating dogs. It's a Libertarian paradise with Don't-Tread-On-Me types lurking around every turn, screaming about taxes, and urging you to save yourself. Scrapyard Massacre's best resource is its inherently creepy setting: smashed cars, oil barrels and other detritus line the maze that leads you through several different areas, both inside and out, and even the drive out there can creep you out if you're traveling with the right bunch of ghouls.

Lacey Swain

Our group waited outside in line in what was one of the first actual semi-heavy rains of the season for a little over an hour before we were let into the Massacre, and although we were soaked to the bone, the queue was good for awkward teenage date watching, complete with requisite creepy and costumed employees weaving through the line to scare unsuspecting patrons. Scrapyard Massacre is geared towards an older crowd, and it seems like they've put all the tween and under set to work within the haunt itself as Children of the Corn creepers because, honestly, children really are fucking terrifying, especially in the pouring rain in the middle of nowhere.

Lacey Swain

Last year one my cohorts pissed her pants twice at this thing, and this year we all got soaked, so, uh, bring some extra pants, too.

Scrap Yard Massacre 25603 N.E. SR3 Belfair, WA 98528
$15/$13 w/ can of food / 7:30-midnight
www.scrapyardmassacre.com

This post is part of a series comparing the best haunted houses in the Seattle area. Be on the lookout for others in the coming days. Share your opinions in the comments, if you'd like!

The long jaunt up to Snohomish, WA was our first haunt visit this year. With light traffic it only took 40 minutes from Seattle, which seemed fairly reasonable. One of the best things about haunts in Snohomish is that you're close to the middle of nowhere, so getting lost in a field of corn is a nice change from the bustle of city life. Stalker Farms is almost like an amusement park when it comes to a haunted farm—four different attractions plus a fantastic selection of food and drinks. The kettle corn was perfectly filling after two hours of fear and excitement. The apple cider, made by Seattle Street Donuts, was warm and comforting, as were the wonderfully sweet and spicy cardamom donuts.

NO PETS!

Although there was a steady stream of drizzle the whole night, our extra clothes were sufficient for comfort—I suggest wearing boots or heavy shoes and a few layers. Though the lines never seemed overwhelmingly long, standing in the dark crisp night can make a person rather cold. Wear some gloves! Bring an umbrella! And although it goes against my middle class upbringing, you might want to spring for the VIP ticket on Fridays and Saturdays to bypass the lines, if the weather is bad, it's worth it.

Field of Scream entrance.

Our first excursion took us to the Field of Screams, which seems like the main attraction at Stalker Farms. I suggest a group of four people or less to get the full benefit of each scare—I visited Stalker Farms two years ago with a large group and was in the back, I didn't get scared once! Though Stalker Farms' website notes that you're supposed to take the haunted path at your own pace, you should be conscientious of those behind you. There's a chance that you may get too close to the group in front of you, if that's the case, pause and let them get ahead. Field of Screams has a dizzying array of trails and shacks to weave in and out of—it's wonderfully eerie, with quiet stretches of just corn and fog. The scares come when you least expect them, not when they would seem typical. One room was decorated in fake meat and another in actual garbage. The actors and costumes are totally professional and spooky, you will yell and scream!

Derek Erdman

Outside of the Last Laugh

After the terrifying conclusion of Field of Screams, we took a break from the yelling/heavy breathing and decided that we all liked the scares and were satisfied with how long it lasted. Our VIP pass allowed us to go right to the front of the line again, this time for the secondary haunt, the Last Laugh. Tickets for this can only be purchased after you've bought Field of Screams, and you also get access to the un-haunted corn maze for an extra $5. If I'm not mistaken, you can get access to all of these things and line jumping access for $30, which is a pretty good deal for all of the excitement provided. And let me tell you, I found the Last Laugh to be totally a lot more scarier and creepier than most all other haunted houses that I've ever been to. The best parts were long, extended hallways and trails through the corn. It was quiet in the immediate area, but you could hear faint screams coming from other parts of the farm. There was excellent use of quiet audio playing from the fields—backwards music, whispers, music boxes. The ground was intermittently fake mushy and there were two mazes where you could take wrong turns and get lost. One was an outdoor chain link fence maze that was inhabited by a terrifying baby monster. She mocked us as we made wrong turns, which was both funny and horrifying. The other maze was nearly pitch black and seemed to go on forever. The Last Laugh probably took 10-12 minutes, and was completely brilliant. This was the highlight of Stalker Farms for me, especially the person dressed in a tight all-black body suit who just stood against walls hissing.

Derek Erdman

In line for the Zombie Hunt.

New to Stalker Farms (and apparently other haunts in the area) is the Hunt For Zombies ride. There was quite a line for this attraction and you can't VIP pass your way to the front, so we waited for close to 45 minutes. A truck with a covered trailer bed leaves every 15 minutes or so carrying 20 or so people, each with a turret-style paintball gun. There's a short explanation of events by a military man that you're going to shoot at zombies. The truck bounds through a trail surrounded by corn stalks, sheds and mannequins. Every so often a person dressed in what must be a lot of padding appears and gets shot by everybody on that side of the trailer. It's interactive and amusing and over very quickly.

I interviewed 6th and 7th graders Anuj and Filip who were in line for the Zombie Hunt, they kept asking the random ghouls that entertain the lines if they could have hot dogs. It was their first of many haunted houses for the season, and they were both looking forward to the hunt. When I asked them both what the worst part about school was, they answered in unison, "learning!"

Overall, Stalker Farms is a great value, with a ton of fright. You'll be there for a while, so it's worth the drive. If the weather is crummy, bundle up and maybe bring some cover. A great haunt for everybody!

Stalker Farms: 8705 Marsh Road Snohomish, WA 98296 (360) 568-7391

What this local band is called, Irukandji Physics of Fusion, is indeed the music it makes...

Cameron Nagashima/www.irukandjimusic.com

It's a fusion of old and new, funk and hiphop, dancehall and rock. Sometimes it is raw, sometimes it is lyrical, and always it is positive. You can hear them tomorrow night at Nuemos.

All hail Kristina Childs! The Seattle DJ/promoter has brought back KRAKT, the wonderfully raunchy, hard-as-fuck techno night that used to electrify Re-bar for a few years in the '00s. Now happening every other first Friday at Electric Tea Garden, KRAKT—if past parties are indicators—should guarantee ALL CAPS, top-crotch techno thrills six times a year. Getting Spain's Pig & Dan (Igor Tchkotoua and Dan Duncan) to help you relaunch is a superb omen. These guys keep their techno creepy, mischievous, and driving, which will sound amazing in that crucial 2 to 5 a.m. time slot, when your mind is most liable to go wonky. Portland's Bryan Zentz is also worth staying up way past your bedtime for. If I may sample myself from a Stranger Suggests recommendation: "In his productions, Zentz locates the golden mean between propulsive, machinelike efficiency and libidinous rhythmic friction." That's what I'm talking about. Get KRAKT. With Roddimus and Miss Shelrawka. Friday, Electric Tea Garden, 10 pm–5 am, $15, 21+.

On Friday I went on down to Belltown for the Ariel Pink & Friends Decibel showcase. I missed BODYGUARD, but got there just in time for DaM-FunK, which was pretty DaM boring (I KNOW what the little hat he puts on the 'a' means, I'm making that joke either way HA HA). He started off with some promising funkiness, but it turned out to be just repetitive repetitiveness forever, eternally, without end, etc. There WAS a keytar involved though, which did add some points! Always points for keytars!

Ariel Pink

I saw Ariel Pink having a cigarette outside before his show and really wanted to crack his back and give him some posture tips like an overbearing aunt—"You're so cute! You just need to stand up straight! You're going to be hunched over by the time you're 50!"

Mr. Pink started his set with a song about nymphomaniacs, which included an extended "Love Me Do" breakdown (with the lyrics changed to be too dirty for me to want to type right now). I think I saw five songs, and they all sounded true-to-recording. I'm only telling you that because people have grumbled in the past about his live shows sucking because his lo lo lofi recordings are hard to mimic with a band. Grumble no more!

I then sped over to the Funhouse to see the Unnatural Helpers show. Everyone was raving about the three opening bands (which I missed because I COULDN'T WIN WITH THESE SHOW TIMINGS)—Survival Knife, Stickers, and Wimps (LOVE Stickers Wimps, hope to see Survival Knife soooon). The Helpers finale included an extended jam session featuring friends on trombone and saxophone!

Helpers n' horns!

I'm currently obsessed with the band Killing Joke, and spent most of the morning reading about their apocolypse-fearing trip to Iceland in 1982. Singer Jaz Coleman (who is currently missing) decided to quit the band after their third LP (1982's Revelations) and hid out from the end of the world (?!) in Iceland, with other band members soon to follow. Eventually, the world didn't end and they re-formed Killing Joke and recorded Fire Dances the next year.

But all of that is beside the point, because what I want to talk about is this fucked-up private documentary of the Xclusiv Nightclub in Batley, West Yorkshire from 1984. According to the YouTube notes, the video was commissioned by Annie and Pete Swallow, who managed the Xclusiv Nightclub. It's done in a investigative journalist style, with a phony reporter asking wonderfully inane questions and a ton of vintage footage of goons with giant rooster haircuts. It's two hours long and copies of the video were apparently sold to club patrons for £2.

There are gobs of highlights, ranging from Annie Swallow's smashing fashion, the DJ's in-between song banter, and dizzy English youths flailing their arms and writhing like malfunctioning robots. There's also nearly indecipherable interview answers.

The best part of the whole video is a woman in a David Bowie t-shirt (she loves David Bowie) who dances like she's auditioning for Cats on Broadway. Usually in the shadows is a forlorn punker in a leather jacket who's obviously in love with her, but the video doesn't confirm if they found each other on that dance floor. The nearly choreographed rendition of "Life on Mars?" at the end is absolutely stunning.

You can watch the whole thing below. It's two hours long. If you ignore the speed limit, you can drive to Vancouver in two hours.

Chelsea Mannella

Flash Arcade, a "traveling arcade" made up of local enthusiasts Tim Uomoto and Sean Bray's personal collection of retro video game machines, is now on display at gallery/lounge Vermillion. Among the 18 games, all available for 50 cents or less per play, are five pinball machines, three shooting games complete with fake plastic guns, an old-school Street Fighter II and a new(er)-school Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (!!!), and classic multiplayer side-scrolling beat-em-ups like X-Men and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Not too long ago these bulky things were everywhere: restaurants, laundromats, 7-11s, malls. Now there have been seven "console generations" and you can play Modern Warfare against someone from Russia without leaving your couch. The oversized, stubborn (Time Crisis II and T2: Judgment Day were broken, and Uomoto had to open up the X-Men machine to fix it at one point) machines are the definition of obsolete, making them the ultimate piece of nostalgia for a very specific age group. People who were older when these games were popular saw them as for kids, and anyone born after the introduction of 16- and 32-bit consoles—the same processing speed as most old arcade games—played them on a TV instead.

Chelsea Mannella

Arcade Owner Uomoto and Demolition Man

But for me, and probably anyone else who grew up in the '80s or '90s and spent a fair chunk of their youth feeding quarters into these giant boxes, the fun factor hasn't changed a bit. The difficulty levels of Flash Arcade's games seemed to be on a friendly setting to minimize frustration, and there are placards on top of the machines with interesting facts and anecdotes from video game history. The installation runs until August 4, and cover is free (unless the bar decides to charge $5 on a Friday or Saturday). Vermillion's regular music/DJ nights in the back bar are still going on, too—tonight is "The Jam" with DJs Specs Wizard, Able One, and Absolute Madman. What's not to like here?

If anyone wants it in Marvel vs. Capcom 2, feel free to challenge me and get that ass whupped. Full list of all of Flash Arcade's games below:

X-Men (4-player version)
Badlands
Pac-Man
Ms. Pac-Man
T2: Judgment Day
Time Crisis II
Area 51: Site 4
Street Fighter II: Champion Edition
Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Golden Axe
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
King of the Monsters 2
720
Twilight Zone (Pinball)
Johnny Mnemonic (Pinball)
Demolition Man (Pinball)
Seawitch (Pinball)
Striker Xtreme (Pinball)

God, I fear for the poor young employees at Genki Sushi. Half of them look all of 18. I hope they get a door person, because a significant amount of inebriated, obnoxious cattle will pour into that place when the bars close. This is great for the owners, but for employees in that type of service work—i.e., not full service, and therefore wrought with shitty tips—it's going to be a fucking nightmare.

I live just the other side of the freeway overpass form the Scarlet Tree. It's a treat popping in there on random nights just to see what's going on. Often times there's a vibrant crowd and a live band. It's absolutely nothing like any scene on Capitol Hill (why I love checking it out). Random note: I was there the other week, and a dude ordered a hot water, and a pitcher of cold water, and did not tip. Anyway, this piece starts tonight, and you should get out of your comfort zone and go check it out. Maybe you'll meet your soul mate.

Confidential to Jacob and Eli, who showed up on a quiet Thursday last week because they read a listing of a defunct night there on our site. Sorry boys! Now everything should be straight.

Press release after the cut

How Now Brown Cow is an all improv groove jazz thang. If you love the funked up soul sound of the 70s, the jazzy grooves from the chase scenes from SWAT or the get down, soundtrack from Shaft then you will GET DOWN WITH BROWN. Often compared to Average White Band, Tower of Power, Miles Davis (Electric Band), Weather Report, Herbie Hancock & The Headhunters and P-Funk, How Now Brown Cow have a sound that appeals to fans of jazz, funk, blues, soul and anything with a groove. How Now Brown Cow is Dave Kurtiak (bass), Marc Hager (keys), Donovan Pfeifer (drums), Brad Schrandt (sax and flute) and features special guest players regularly. How Now Brown Cow has performed regularly in and around the Seattle area since 2008.

“How Now Brown Cow sounds like Coltrane playing the theme song to CHiPs, mixing high art with ’70s camp. Throw in tasty samples and some cowbell, and, boy, you’re cookin’ up a party. Bowmp chicka bowmp bow.”
— The Weekly Volcano

MUSICIANS! Look! This week's paper features the Rock-and-Roll Survival Guide, where we shine a light on some of the grimiest, darkest, and most confusing corners of the music industry.

Want to know how to tour without killing a bandmate? Emily Nokes of Tacocat tells you!

Want to hear about all the shitty jobs you might have to endure in order to eat while trying to make it as a musician? Lars Finberg of the Intelligence shares his stories!

Need some tips for drinking at shows without completely ruining your life or reputation? Kelly O knows all the secrets!

Want to get your music played on the radio? DJs from 107.7 the End and KEXP have some tips for you!

There are also informative interviews with record producer Erik Blood, Grammy winner Ishmael Butler, and the Crocodile's talent buyers Melissa Darby and Hunter Motto.

But that's not all: Bree McKenna invades three local practice spaces and uncovers a Seattle landmark even more disgusting than the infamous Wall of Gum. It's a WALL OF MUCUS:

Timothy Rysdyke

See it all here!

Power-pop legend Tommy Keene is making a rare Seattle appearance this Saturday at the Sunset Tavern with the Riffbrokers & the Parson Red Heads. His last record, Behind the Parade is absolutely brilliant, and every time I've seen him live, he's been great. For more background info, check this birthday post from last year.

Okay, so I just moved to Fremont, up the hill and EAST of 99, natch, and last night was the first time I had a chance to go out and exactly what the fuck did I find? ADD-A-BALL!! An ARCADE?! In godamn FREMONT?! Yup, AND...by the way, they serves the beer, so 21 and over, kids. In fact, Add-a Ball ain't nothing but an arcade, it's NOT a club with an arcade, it is solely an arcade. Right, so, holy shit I had fun, even tho' I royally SUCK balls when it comes to video games. Um, as I'm a record nerd I dunno exactly the huge awesomeness of the games they evidently have, but the "World Cup Soccer" game was some serious kick ass. The jams were sweet too, they had their RADIO dial set to 104.5, so both Spirit AND the Sonics buzzed my ears. The atmosphere is "perfect hang out." It's the basement you wish you could'a had when you were 14, if you were 14 in 1983, AND with a beer option, so, a TOP CLASS HANG OUT all 'round.

As for any other details...um, well, I was quite wasted when I showed up so I have no idea their hours or shit like that, but I can tell you where AaB is located...it's BEHIND, and under, Piece of Mind (315 N. 36th St.) in Fremont. Just head down the hill, parking lot/taco truck side, towards the alley look to your right and you'll see a real bright blue and red sign that says "Arcade". Okay?! Dig?! Now go, hang, and be stoked.

This is in advance of the four-day grand opening, featuring a barrage of shows happening Fri. Dec. 16-Mon. Dec. 19 with over 20 acts, including Horvitz’s Zony Mash and Sweeter Than the Day groups, WACO, and Yada Yada Blues Band.

The Royal Room will serve as both a live-music venue and as a laboratory in which musicians can brainstorm and collaborate on pieces together in a creative environment.

With permanent backline, recording and video, a grand piano and a generous stage, the venue has been designed to serve the musicians and artists who will be performing. The restaurant and bar has a comfortable neighborhood feel that welcomes patrons of all ages and varied tastes, from an after work happy hour to late in the evening. Thursday through Monday evenings feature local artists with no cover charge, allowing fans and regulars alike to enjoy the music. Tuesday and Wednesday nights are reserved for national and touring acts.

The music featured at the Royal Room covers a wide range of styles, with an emphasis on creative programming and development. This allows artists to work on projects in a collaborative community space. To that end, the club has been designed to accommodate in house recordings, off hour rehearsals and residencies of four to twelve weeks.
