There's only two days left in the fundraising campaign to help the Massive Monkees lock down a long-term lease on The Beacon—their temporary studio located in Seattle's International District. These amazing folks aren't just teaching adults and after-school crews of little kids how to breakdance—they're creating community, and turning people into better and more confident humans.

Check out this short video, and please consider donating a dollar or three. Only two days left! Donate, and read so much more right here.

That's a looooooong time away, yes, but tickets go on sale May 17th, so get that credit card ready because tickets start at $90, making the cheapest one $108.39 after service fees. Eek!

Why we don't get a show with Jay-Z, however, I'll never know. What a shame.

Local label/promotion team Peloton is bringing in Safety Scissors (Matthew Curry) from New York. Mr. Scissors has a new album coming out on Ellen Allien’s BPitch Control label, In a Manner of Sleeping. On it he continues to hone his smooth yet quirky electro pop, featuring his own wistful vocals. it’s not as convulsive or interesting as his Pigeon Funk project with Kit Clayton and Seth “Sutekh” Horvitz, but the music’s undeniably charming.

Safety Scissors will be doing a hybrid live/DJ set from midnight to 2 am. Also on the bill are Montreal’s Tobias van Veen, Seattle’s Duncan Idaho (aka Eli Huntington), and Peloton head Nora Posch (Aron Schoppert). Action goes from 10 pm-4 am at Electric Tea Garden.

There's a hole in the earth where the Funhouse used to be, and Healthy Times Fun Club is now a hair and waxing salon. Queen Anne's Easy Street Records is being replaced by a shiny new Chase Bank, and five years ago the Bellevue real estate company Murray Franklyn bulldozed a strip of iconic bars on Pine for condos and then left it as a parking lot for two years. And now, just a few blocks downhill, Bauhaus and other independent businesses are getting sold up the same river. Rent is rising, people are getting pushed out of the center of the city, and with water on either side, the development refugees can go either north or southx. If Capitol Hill isn't in the picture and you're looking twice at the rest of the map, these days the University District isn't looking half bad.

After years of gathering momentum, and to the surprise of many, the renaissance of the University District has arrived. The community of musicians and organizers spidering out from Roosevelt Way was created by and for the people who couldn't find a space for themselves anywhere else. It's for the part-time day-jobbers and young urban unprofessionals who don't have $15 for a show, who never take cabs, who maybe aren't 21, or who just want to play music for each other without red tape. There are more shows than ever happening in the U-District, and they're cheap or free, all ages, and totally DIY.

Travis Baron and James Grindle’s Knightriders label has been pumping out exceptional electronic music for six years, including releases by Mathew Anderson, Gunnar Lockwood, Naturebot, 214, and Phaedrus. Tonight KR will celebrate its technocratic superiority with a party at Q Nightclub headed by slick Detroit tech-house DJ Punisher (Hej, Matrix, Seismic, Air Drop). Support comes from Baron and Xan Lucero & Karl Kamakahi.

Doors open at 9; free before 10pm, $10 after. More info here.

Check out a Punisher mix and brief bio after the jump.

Known in circles of Detroit for her ambition on the tables, Michelle Herrmann aka Punisher has set a precedence in a city known for its fickle taste. Starting behind the decks in 1993 and then beginning her first record label in 1997, Punisher searched for an outlet that would feature her own production along with having full control over her own distribution and manufacturing. The label became a unique tool that allowed Punisher to really dig down into her equipment for that minimalistic sound her production is known for.

20 years later with 40 releases and remixes under her belt Michelle's music is ever evolving. Moving in a new direction with her sound, Punisher has brought over the synthy tech moods of the Swedish techno producers and drawn upon her own Detroit roots for inspiration. Once banging out hard set's 100% of the time, her current sound has more dancefloor friendly house grooves, one that your club or event is sure to appreciate. She has repeatedly played throughout the US, Puerto Rico, Canada, Europe, and South America, headlining large scale events, festivals and world renowned clubs. On top of her games would be an understatement for Punisher, as her accomplishments are only a small portion of what she has planned for 2013 and beyond.

Also relevant: Crass' "How Does It Feel," the Dead Kennedys' "Kinky Sex Makes the World Go Round", and, tho I fucking HATE the Exploited, their "Maggie You Cunt" is rather on point.

RIP Maggie, she never did give those kids their milk back....did she?

My only goal for this summer is to somehow replicate this amazing looking party. Please let me know if anyone is in a Wham! cover band that can nail "Club Tropicana" while wearing board shorts and an open Hawaiian shirt. Do you think Q would be willing to rent out the space? I got five on it.

We'll also need tinsel palm trees, neon light shapes, a white baby grand piano, and really cool extras willing to act out all the song lyrics. Easy!

[ Comment on this story ]

Now free from Parlophone for the first time in 28 years, Pet Shop Boys are, at last, releasing the much-whispered-about full-on dance album Electric.

"This is a very exciting point in our careers," they say. "We are hugely proud of the new album."

Which is glowing news for those of us who sat through 2012's dead-eyed Elysium more than once.

WEDNESDAY 3/13

SAN PROPER KEEPS HIS TECHNO RAW

Cody Morrison is shaping Shelter into an essential clubbing experience. The Wednesday weekly has been a bonanza for lovers of adventurous house and techno this year, and Dutch DJ/producer San Proper keeps the hot streak going. Recording for boundary-shoving labels like Rush Hour, Perlon, and Dekmantel, San Proper is part of that elite sector of decknicians who have the rare ability to keep their music strange while keeping bodies moving. The beats mostly shimmy in that time-honored 4/4, but what happens around them is usually twisted and unhinged as hell. As the title of one of his tracks implies, San Proper will "Keep It Raw." Q, 9 pm, $5 adv/$10 DOS, 21+.

(Crocodile) The sandy, salty party hits of the Growlers are rickety and melty at the same time—a 24-hour retro beach circus of psychedelic enchantment, sung by a being who is equal parts surfer and skeleton. Some of their songs are raucous and wild, while others (the newer ones, off their most recent album Hung at Heart) are more thoughtful and, dare I say it, romantic. On top of that, the unpredictable live shows these vagabond party-punks put on makes for an excellent Valentine's Day date option, especially if your person of interest is over the whole wine-sipping/slow-dancing thing (and has been known to drop acid while wearing a Hawaiian shirt and no pants).

Four students at the Laboratory of Atomic and Solid State Physics and Department of Physics at Cornell have written probably the coolest research paper ever, where they scientifically examine the motions of the mosh pit to "enhance our understanding of collective motion in riots, protests, and panicked crowds, leading to new architectural safety design principles that limit the risk of injury at extreme social gatherings."

WHOA. A sample:

Conversely, when the flocking term dominates active MASHer motion, our model predicts a highly ordered vortex-like state [19] where MASHers again phase separate, but the confined active MASHers move with a large non-zero angular momentum (Fig. 1(D)). Remarkably, this spontaneous phase separation and vortex formation is also observed at heavy metal concerts where they are conventionally called circle pits (Fig. 1(E)) [7]. In simulations, we found an even distribution between clockwise (CW) and counter-clockwise (CCW) motion when viewed from above, whereas our observations from concerts show 5% flow CW with the remaining 95% flowing CCW (p < 0.001). This asymmetry is independent of geographical location, as video data was collected from a variety of countries including the United State of America, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Though the origin of this effect is unknown, we speculate it may be related to the dominant handedness/footedness found in humans.

Read the whole thing here.

Or, as my husband pointed out, if you wanted to know about circle pits and moshing, you could just ask these dudes.

(Chop Suey) The pineapple-flavored tropi-pop of Week of Wonders is exactly what my ears needed in order to tell my brain that summer is a real concept. Somewhere the sun is shining—people might even be getting sunburns! Featuring ex–Orca Team and Torn ACLs members, Week of Wonders spill reverbed-out vocals and glittery guitar over a constant conga-line beat—you could swish your hips in a grass skirt to this, no problem. Speaking of hip-swishing, the very danceable Chastity Belt will also be there to keep you warm with their catchy-as-fuck, angst-laced jams.

Though this is bopping, which in hiphop dancing is a part of popping and locking, I couldn't help watching the bassist, Francis Maudsley, in the video for A Flock of Seagulls' greatest tune, "Space Age Love Song," and thinking: He is bopping...

You will not feel it if you don't call that cool move bopping.

When the clock struck upon the hour, Clara had already decided that, yes, she would visit the studio that night. Her pinched face and lack of skill had long kept her from dancing at a professional level, but when the night fell and loneliness called, she often found herself there, dancing away her poor decisions. She had a key to the place for some reason.

She was surprised to see the hastily markered “Workman on Duty” sign hung outside, but she proceeded with inexplicable confidence. And then she saw him, his long hair cascading down the back of his undoubtedly chiseled neck. His muscles were like really strong-looking muscles, and he was changing a light bulb, so Clara could tell he was definitely handy around the house if you know what I mean.

Hearing her approach, he turned and grinned sheepishly. “This bulb didn’t burn hot enough to last,” he explained. When he spoke, Clara felt her Femininity start to just do whatever, and she knew that she was in love with him. She’d been in love and lost her senses before, spinning through the town. But this time she knew: she had to play it totally cool.

So right away, she started doing the splits, because duh, he’s thinking, she’s all flexible and I just came to change a light bulb but this is fine too. She danced around him, whirling clumsily, her big, stupid lips making weird little puckering sounds. Her favorite move, the “Grand Cherokee,” seemed to impress him. He responded by removing his shirt to reveal (YES!) total rippage with not too much hair. She was not afraid because she knew it was love and because she needed a man who would take a chance and because she was a fucking idiot.

He began to dance with her, moving as gracefully as only a shirtless, bemulleted Light Bulb Change Technician can. Then they made out and everything all over the gross floor. She was really feeling the heat with somebody and her secret heart rejoiced. Finally, exhausted, they collapsed—the back of Clara's head crashing awkwardly into his lap. Clara had danced with somebody. With somebody who loved her. Maybe. Probably not though, it was just a guy changing a lightbulb and the whole thing was pretty weird if we’re being honest about it.

In addition to playing guitar for COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle, and later Chris & Cosey and other TG/C&C spinoff projects, Cosey Fanni Tutti (Christine Newby) worked as an erotic dancer during the '70s. In Drew Daniel’s 33 1/3 book on Throbbing Gristle’s classic 1979 LP 20 Jazz Funk Greats (which I’m currently reading and enjoying), Tutti lists the songs she preferred moving to while removing her clothes. No matter your stance on stripping, the selections are fascinating. She even breaks it down to which songs accompanied which routines.

PVC outfit: “Hard Working Man” – Captain Beefheart, “Heaven” – Pere Ubu
School girl outfit: “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” – Ian Dury and the Blockheads, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” – Crystal Gayle
Pink satin shorts etc.: “Easy” – Commodores
Some topless dance tracks: “Native New Yorker” – Odyssey, “Instant Replay” – Dan Hartman, “Lady Maramalade” – Labelle, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” – Sylvester, “Disco Inferno” – The Trammps

Now you know.

While reading Jezebel this morning, I was updated on two disgusting (kind of) Christmas related inflictions: Christmas Tree Rash, and the possibility that your tree is infected with something called bark lice. Both have equally gross names and parallel the whole post-Christmas hangover, where we try and discard memories of heated political arguments with our Republican uncles and cast away our Franzia-stained Christmas sweaters to the trash in order to properly prepare for the days leading up to New Year's Eve.

In this magnificent, party-soaked taint between the two holidays, we can look forward to this Boat Party/Maxines/Shivas show at the Comet on Friday! Boat Party's high-energy, 20-minute set guarantees to unleash the champagne-soaked magnificence of renting a hot-tub boat on Lake Union while drunkenly listening to the Spice Girls with your most hilarious girlfriends (besides sharing the guitar player Julia Shapiro from Chastity Belt, the two bands also are connected by their bassists being sisters...you can read an interview with them here.) As if that isn't amazing enough, Portland psyche-poppers The Shivas and the Olympia guitar-and-drum duo the Maxines are both K Records bands that will bring the post-Xmas/pre-NYE glitter party into full swing.

Top Gun by Boat Party

Featuring the biggest party tunes ever: from Sean Paul to Sizzla, Biggie to Bob Marley, Michael Jackson to Mavado and R.
(Q) Did you know that from noon until 5 p.m. today, 200 or more same-sex couples will get married at Seattle City Hall? Artists Jennifer Zeyl and Celeste Cooning are going to turn the place into a festive wedding-worthy scene, and couples will marry in quick, official ceremonies. So what's a newlywed couple, and their family and friends, to do afterward? Hit the Big Gay Wedding Reception at Q, of course! Starting at 6 p.m., the event is hosted by Dan Savage and Terry Miller, and it will raise money for other states to fight for marriage equality. There'll be photographers, wedding cake, flowers, and DJ Riz making everybody dance. Expect love, laughter, and probably a drag queen or two.

UNTOLD'S BASS MUSIC IS UNSPEAKABLY GREAT

Untold (UK producer Jack Dunning) is among the most exciting musicians working in the febrile zone where future bass music and techno converge. He's part of a wave of intelligent dubstep artists who expanded their sound palettes when the genre began to sound like a 13-year-old playing with his first Roland synths. Untold's humid, tumescent tracks for important labels like Hessle Audio, Hotflush, and his own Hemlock Recordings bustle spasmodically yet elegantly into pretzel-logic rhythms, augmented by an array of odd textures. Listening to Untold is like being slammed into the future, with your own sweat easing you into unknown realms. Shelter, a new weekly at Q run by Decibel operative Cody Morrison, looks like it's going to be a valuable addition to Seattle's clubscape. With Sounds in Silence. Q, 9 pm, free, 21+.

WEDNESDAY 11/21

SKANKSGIVING

I HATE THANKSGIVING SO MUCH, it gives me a boner. It consumes me. Give me a good ol' holiday made up by card companies and candy stores any day. Thanksgiving was clearly invented by Paula Deen's cankles; nothing but yam-steamed rooms full of footballing Republican drunkles and inedible bowls of buttered goop. Dreadful! The only thing worse than Thanksgiving is the gross people who gleefully call it "Turkey Day," who should all be cordially tossed into the nearest volcano forthwith. (PELE APPRECIATES YOUR SACRIFICE! Please come again.) There are only two slightly redeemable things about the wretched day: (1) that turkeys everywhere finally get what's coming to them, the fucking bastards, and (2) that it ends. Inevitably. (All hail wise Pele!) But this year, we get at least something of a reprieve in two forms.

The first of these comes in the shape of Ben Delacreme and Kitten LaRue, et al., who give you Party Schmarty 2: Skanksgiving Edition. It is a pre-holiday event that's held in that spooky haunted-train-cum-Chinese-joint down in Sodo. To get a feel for it, they encourage you to "think cocktail hour in the dumpster," which isn't really that difficult if you try. (Delightful!) Kitten, Ben, and Lou Henry Hoover will entertain throughout the night, DJ Mathematix will spin for those inclined to dance, the drinks they've concocted sound ridiculous ("Don't even ASK what's in it!" they warn and are not kidding), and there shall be prizes for the skankiest ho. Now, it seems we've been spending a lot of time with Ben and the crew lately, and DAMN RIGHT WE ARE. They are burlesque-draggy-cabaret GODS. If they can't properly screw over Thanksgiving, it cannot be done. (Be sure to take tons of pictures for your fucking Republican drunkles.) Orient Express, 9 pm, $7, 21+.
