MTNS play the Black Lodge TONIGHT with Black Pus and the Numbs!

For their big Debacle Fest matinee performance at the Highline on May 4, Seattle duo MTNS are barefoot and wearing silk slips like it's no big deal. Slender Austin Hund ignites a bass dirge that ripples pant legs. Burly Daniel Enders coaxes crackles from a light theremin, then grabs his drumsticks and stands on his stool in order to beat on the venue's ceiling pipes. Eventually he sits down at his kit and attacks it with feral grace, his face distorted into a demonic grimace.

MTNS then launch into a wild, methodical growl and stomp. The twosome's portentous noise rock unexpectedly accelerates with mad energy, revealing roots in speed metal and no-wave. Enders drops a stick twice in 10 seconds, but no matter. The apocalyptic tone's been established.

As the set progresses, Hund makes his bass corkscrew and spasm in strange contortions and squeal like a pig (see: Deliverance), with a predilection for ratcheting up the tension to infernal degrees. But MTNS are about more than just speed and power. Their last song of the set—and the finale of their excellent new album, All Songs Are Spells—"Hut on a High Peak," shows that they're capable of writing a moving, majestic melody. Marked by an ascending recorder motif, it's one of the best songs by a Seattle band this year.

MTNS and Sissy Spacek: A Recipe for Insanity

For my money, the can't-miss show at Debacle Fest this year is the matinee at Highline on Saturday (show starts at 3 pm), with an aurally lethal lineup including Seattle noise/math duo MTNS and deranged Los Angelenos Sissy Spacek.

Check out Spacek's album Contretemps on their Bandcamp page. The whole thing is less than five minutes, so it's not too much of a commitment—what else can decimate your sense of self and general well-being in that amount of time? I haven't seen them but judging by their records I'm expecting confrontational, batshit-levels of insanity from their live show. One can hope.

And if you've never experienced the spectacle that is MTNS, you are in for a sweaty, chaotic treat. For those who have, I suggest placing bets: How long will it take for drummer Dan Enders to strip down to his underpants? How many amps will be blown by the end of the set? Will anyone make it out alive?

Yes, I'm aware that this Saturday will likely be the sunniest we've seen all year, but I nevertheless suggest spending the afternoon in Seattle's finest vegan dive bar, getting down to some seriously unhinged tunes.

They sound like the soundtrack to a more reverb-y, rock n' roll production of Grease and kinda bringing to mind the vocals of Mariska Veres from Shocking Blue or Emily Beanblossom from Christmas, sans psychedelia. The result is re-envisioned '60s sock-hop silliness filtered through '90s garage, a la Headcoatees

Lordy, y'all! This Bad Powers record Bad Powers, is BRUTAL! Uh, YEAH, I know this record came out LAST YEAR (in, like, September), but I'm just getting to writing about it 'cause they're finally touring the West Coast and will be playing THIS MONTH on the third night of Tom Tom Magazine & Ladies' Choice Presents CHOICEFEST II at the Comet, Saturday, April 20th.

Bad Powers, is a bi-coastal group—front woman Ms. Megan Tweed lives in Seattle an is also currently in the Family Curse; the other members Brendan Tobin, Cooper, and Matthew Eganlive live in NYC and are all ex-Made Out Of Babies. A lot seems to have been made over Made Out Of Babies splitting when singer, Julie Christmas, went solo. Thing is, for all the "journalist" chatter, MOoB didn't just REPLACE Christmas, they became a different band and I'm glad they had the smarts to CHANGE THEIR FUCKING NAME and not just continue on tryna pull some switcheroo bullshit ala the Dick York/Dick Sargent as Darrin from TV's Bewitched!

Okay, I kinda hesitate to say this, but... this is a '90s sounding record, like, early '90s underground action, natch. In the best ways. It's heavy, NOT metal, slightly out of control, catchy—the riffs get stuck in my head, and it actually makes me nostalgic. To some degree it kinda fits into the '90s underground narrative which was aborted when (ahem) grunge met with pop acceptance/compliance. There are knowing nods to Drive Like Jehu/Steel Pole Bathtub/Jesus Lizard (less the East Bay Ray guitar), and a working knowledge of '80s HC groups like Crucifix, however, they are smart enough to actually reinvent, versus simply regurgitate. The songs are well written/composed, melodic, math rock-ish, very prog, but there's also a heavy humid and hazy, creepy, lingering atmosphere; I get slightly uncomfortable when I have this album playing on my hi-fi. Really, I do, it's tense. And Ms. Tweed, well, she's the better front woman. On record she proves to have more spirit and range than Christmas and, live, she's a fucking tornado. Ms. Tweed's closest parallel, I figure, would be the infamous Laura Carter—the ungovernable force who fronted Jack-O Nuts and the BBQ Killers. Uh-huh. So, yeah, Bad Powers? FUCK YEAH!

Apparently, local er... sunny, surfy, lo-fi twee dreamers Seapony are fed up with the whole "pretty music" thing.

"This month, Seapony will tour Japan for the first time, followed by a European tour in May. These overseas shows are the swan song for the old Seapony, the one you know and love. After years of countless bloggers carelessly lobbing the word "twee" around and falling back on the same adjectives to describe our music (sunny, surfy, lo-fi, dreamy), we've had enough. It's time to leave the sunshine and enter the shadows. We hope our fans follow us on this journey, but we realize this change in direction won't please everyone. Look for our new album DEATH BY SEAPONY later this year." —Danny Rowland, Seapony

When reached for comment, Hardly Art publicist Jason Baxter said, "We're just trying to be supportive right now—hoping they get it out of their system before we receive any more harsh emails from tearful teens."

Grenades, the local riffblasters who've been promising a full-length since last year, are finally coming through! Their debut album, Heaven Is Empty, will be out May 7th on Red Cobra Records and the band gave us the album's opening track, "Emerald," to share with the world.

Here, hear—it'll wake you the fuck up:

Of course my impatient snark above is just a fun jab—in truth, while the Seattle foursome haven't released a full-length, they've clearly been keeping busy. Just last month they released the limited-edition tape Badmotorboater (which you can hear on bandcamp), and in 2011 they did a split record with another worthy local band, Mercy Ties.

Still, very excited about Heaven Is Empty. I've been bugging them about it for over a year. It is time.

Grenades' record release party is May 3rd at the Comet with Smooth Sailing, Serial Hawk, and Old Iron.

Did the Teen Idles Record the Best Stooges Cover?!?

When I was younger, just a budding record nerd, it was SOOOOOO much easier to find a copy of the Teen Idles Minor Disturbance EP and/or the DCHC compilation Flex Your Head than to find ANYTHING by the Stooges. Of course, it was the '80s and I was in North Carolina. That said, the Teen Idles hardcore version of "No Fun," found on Flex Your Head, was so different when compared to the Stooges' original slow paced and attitude-filled "No Fun," when I finally DID hear the original I didn't think it was the same song! DERP!

I hafta admit I'm SLIGHLTY trolling, or rather being kinda cheeky, when I suggest the Teen Idles produced the best Stooges cover, but DAMN, I do love this song. Also: the Damned's take on the Stooges' "1970" as "I Feel Alright," the Dictators' "Search And Destroy," Sonic Youth's "I Wanna Be Your Dog," Birthday Party "Loose," Radio Birdman "TV Eye," Hanoi Rocks "I Feel Alright," and like all of what anyone ever called (ahem) grunge.

Am I missing any quality Stooges covers, from like PRE-1990...?! And yes, I AM on purpose ignoring the Sex Pistols' version of "No Fun;" I hate the Sex Pistols. Gimme some danger in the comments, y'all.

As I've said before, I'm not really a part of Segal's ongoing "I'll Give You a Break" series, but I am an awkward record nerd who sometimes THINKS he can add to the melee of beats/samples and whatnot and I'm willing to hi-jack Segal's action, occasionally! Uh, yeah..so, dig them first eight seconds of Jamul's "All You Have Left Is Me."

Originally known as Jamul City Funk Band, Jamul was a heavy blues/boogie trio of long hairs from San Diego. Their verion of "Tobacco Road" is quite nice, and a cheapy—you can find the 45 for less than ten bones!

Black Hills, Dust Moth, and Slow Bird play tonight at Black Lodge. All Ages. $8. Someone said there might be balloons. Set times are: Slow Bird at 9:00, Dust Moth at 9:45, and Black Hills at 10:30. I spoke with Black Hills and Slow Bird about scratch-n-sniffs. The hard questions. Black Hills includes members of Minus the Bear, the Lonely Forest, and the Quiet Ones. Solid, sunned in songs. Allman Brothers-ish in a good way. Slow Bird posts and hoists post shoegaze indie-ness into the night sky.

Dust Moth is members of Eighteen Individual Eyes, These Arms Are Snakes, Shift, Undertow, and Sparkmarker. This is Dust Moth’s first show. The Dust Moth launches. Oil-fang sprung from insect haunches. Really excited to see and hear this band, as the teasers they’ve put up have not quenched enough.

Toto (clip) by Dust Moth

(Slow Bird) What has Slow Bird been up to? What is your never-ending fight against?

Jennae Quisenberry: Slow Bird lately has been working on expanding our twitter impact while we await for our album to be hopefully released sometime this Spring. There may be balloons at the show tonight. Our song/sound-writing process is essentially a chronicle of our never-ending fight against a demonic bird that perpetually attempts to destroy our band. Little does he know all he needs to do is stub any toe on Matt's left foot.

If your music were a scratch n sniff scent, what would it be?

Laphroig. 18 year. Single malt peated whiskey from Islay. The most richly flavored scotch in the World. We're an acquired scent.

What is the worst band name you've ever heard in your life?

Quisenberry: Anything with bird in it. It's so cliché.

Expound more on the scent of bands with word bird in their name.

Vegan Cheese

Rose Gold by Slow Bird

(Black Hills) How did Black Hills form? What did you feel you needed to harvest with it?

Erin Tate: David Totten and I have been playing for about a year now. We wrote our first few songs, then realized we wanted to go in a fully different direction. We needed to harvest our inner Ghost Buster and Charles Manson

If your music were a scratch n sniff scent, what would it be?

Shit... cuz we smell like shit?

What is the worst band name you've ever heard in your life?

Black Hills, because I like making fun of myself. Hoobastank. Chumbawamba. Phish. Todd and the Big Head Monsters. Bowling for Soup. Limp Bizkit. Bush.

If those bands were scratch n sniff scent, what would it be?

Bull shit, because they smell like an actual bull's shit?

Bonded By Blood: Heavy as a Very Heavy Thing

“I want to see all of you go ape shit,” an apparently sober (or you know.. somewhat) Phil Anselmo declared from the stage Tuesday night at the Showbox. The former Pantera vocalist and current label-head, boxing “journalist,” and front man of soulful Southern sludge super group Down sure had his share of die-hards in the crowd – most notably a round 50-something dude with a burly facebeard who, during the openers, kept yelling “Come on Phil!” and “ Show ‘em what’s up Phil!” The band handled knew their audience well, churning out a set heavy in NOLA material, their first record and landslide fan favorite. Onstage, Eyehategod drummer Jimmy Bower locked the band into a solid stoney groove as he sat behind the drum set, complimented by the sheer crunchiness of guitarists Pepper Keenan (Corrosion of Conformity) and Kirk Windstein (Crowbar).

With all this in mind, I gotta say, you know it’s a heavy week when you saw Down and they weren’t the heaviest band you saw. No, that title goes to French eardrum-crushers Gojira and the ridiculously loud yet precise set they played last Sunday at Studio Seven. There’s a reason why this band sells out shows wherever they travel. Ball-bustingly heavy.

Assuming you’ve already decided what your plans are for the weekend, I’m going to suggest a couple shows for those who wish to extend the rage by one more evening. On Monday night, the ghosts of Northwest’s past will haunt the Highline as Devotion brings their uniquely throwback Soundgarden-gone-hardcore sound to Capitol Hill. Tacoma band Shore is opening. If you’re into Quicksand, Jawbox and y’know that whole alternative post-hardcore 90’s thing, make sure you show up early for Shore. Why not? It’s fuckin' free, man.

That same night, across town at the 2 Bit Saloon, you can get your fill of cheap bear and evilness with their weekly “Metal Monday” event where, this week, blackened thrashers Thou Shall Kill will be headlining. Expect nothing less than full-on leather, spikes, chain mail and fake blood. Pretty on point for a Monday night if you ask me.

[ Comment on this story ]

Edge

Legend tells of a drummer whose talent for remaining upright and functional behind his drum kit after inhaling copious amounts of weed and downing what could amount to a kiddie pool full of Pabst Blue Ribbon, was known throughout the land. His resume consists of being in some of the finer underground punk and metal bands in the Seattle area. Ben McIsaac, the lab rat of drummers, has never been one to commit to a single band. He's always entertaining three or four at a time thus the long running, annual blooper reel event humbly known as Ben Fest, which pits all of McIsaac's bands on one quaint bill for one destructive evening.

Here comes the sad news, Ben McIsaac will be relocating from our little rain-city of a village to the glamorous, yet roach-ridden drags of Brooklyn, New York. Now before you “Booooooo” and throw your rotten tomatoes, you have to hear my good news! All four of McIsaac's bands are burning a hole in his pocket and there's still time for one final Ben Fest! You want crusty, thrash punk? Have a friend babysit your bandana'd dog and get to the show on time for the reunion/demolition of Enforcer. Hopefully they'll bust out their fierce rendition of Talking Heads' "Psycho Killer." Next we have the catchy pop/punk coating over a surf rock candied center which is Sweet Pups. Erica Brunner (McIsaac's better half) lays down the tasty guitar riffs, coaxing your feet to move to the effervescent beat. Did I mention there's a fucking keytar?

Then there's this douchebaggery of a hardcore band called Don Peyote. I highly recommend you save your choice heckling and empty cans purely to hurl at these folks. My only request is that you take it lightly on the guitar player as she, me, is currently undergoing cosmetic surgery to become the next Vanna White and my botox injection sights are still healing. At this point in the evening, those in the gambling community can place their bets on how much longer McIsaac will be able to stay upright under his own power. Perfect timing for one of the most beer-scented, forked tongued, almost seven years strong straight up punk bands, Shit Gets Smashed to take to the streets and play their LAST SHOW EVER. It's gonna be a slobber knocker and it's all going down this Saturday, the 12th at the Black Lodge. Come bid Ben McIsaac bon voyage and bring a plastic poncho, things may get a little weird.

Friday's Vermillion show, featuring Wasted USA, Pony Time, Constant Lovers, and Mtns was something else. I haven't seen music at Vermilion in a bit, and watching bands there is a welcome change of pace. The front gallery had a few tables set up for beer time chit chat, making for a nice "in between" area before diving into the show guts in the back.

Really profesh photo of Mtns.

Wasted USA was first (a member of everyone's favorite, Tit Pig, created this band - y'all remember Tit Pig, right?). I missed most of their set trying to deal with a bathroom line, followed by a bar line, followed by a desperate QFC run, but I heard rave reviews from those who had full drinks and empty bladders when they started.

For Pony Time, I stood on a bench, but was still too short and could still only see the top of bassist Luke Beetham's hair, flopping to the beat. I'm digging PT's new songs and the whole set sounded more aggressive than usual, but still perfectly catchy. The crowd was wild for it, as well.

Constant Lovers were great—keeping the LOUD theme of the night, they played choppy and dissonant numbers while people flailed in the front row. I tried to gently elbow my way up there to get a better look, but found only an impenetrable wall of goons.

I managed to get to the front plus (front plus = the place roughly in between sitting on the drummer's lap and cuddling the PA) during the last set of the evening, the much anticipated Mtns. I filled my ears with a set of rubbery plugs that I think are supposed to be "fancy" and for "hearing all the sound levels equally approved by Guitar Center," but maybe not ideal for when you're speaker cuddling. I was happy to lose whatever hearing I have left, completely immersed in the organ-shaking waves of noise. I was surprised at how easily I recognized the songs. It was clammy to the point of indoor fog. Mtns was in their underwear. I wished we could all be.

At one point, a dudely looking button-up guy turned to me and enthusiastically tried to tell me something. I took out an ear plug out so he could point at Mtns and say "they just moved in across the hall from me." Color me impressed!

[ Comment on this story ]

Canadian duo the Pack A.D. are on Mint Records, the label most famous for birthing the genre of cuddle-core (Cub, Bunny Grunt), but their music seems more like it'd beat you up before it would cuddle you. While the drummer Maya Miller and guitarist/vocalist Becky Black are are often compared to Detroit garage rock (their fourth album was even produced by Jim Diamond, who worked on The Dirtbombs and White Stripes albums), but a few of their songs also reminded me a little bit of the psych-pop-rock of The Mallard.

The Pack A.D. play at the Crocodile with Hobosexual this Sunday, and I got the hot tip from Emily Nokes about how you can always tell a lot about a band based on how they act in their Nardwuar interview:

“You only live once, so just go fucking nuts.”

No, it wasn’t Drake, the crowned Prince of YOLO who penned those words. It was one Mitch Lucker, vocalist of SOCAL deathcore-heartthrobs Suicide Silence. Lucker died last night after a tragic motorcycle accident. The 28-year-old vocalist spent the better part of the past decade building a dedicated legion of fans for his band, and even though they were never really my thing, the sheer amount of Suicide Silence rip-offs that have plagued the metal scene in recent years is a true testament to how influential they became. Rest In Power, Mitch, you fell long before your time.

Whenever a big name in metal dies, it gets me thinking about that eternal question. If the fairy tales are true, and there really is such thing as hell, wouldn’t that be the ultimate venue to see a killer metal show? Imagine watching Cliff Burton tear it up alongside Chuck Schuldiner (Death), Pete Steele (Type O Negative) and Vitek (Decapitated) with mile-high flames surrounding them as your fellow sinners get fucked by Satan’s throbbing red cock. Now that’s fucking metal.

As I sit here typing this out, I’m smearing small bits of smudged Halloween makeup onto my laptop’s keyboard. I tried and tried to get all this grease paint residue off my face, but it’s obvious it will take some time for all the layers I caked on to wear off. No, I wasn’t a Norwegian black-metaller or a juggalo, I was just a straight-up classic skeleton, Cobra Kai style. Whenever Halloween falls on a weekday, I’ve usually been to about 3 or 4 Halloween parties and dressed up enough times to be completely over it, so it’s a surprise to me I even put in that much effort.

Just the other night, on all Hallows' eve-eve, (the 30th), a Canadian band by the name of KEN mode (acronym for Kill Everyone Now) completely blew me away. It was one of those shows at El Corazon where there must have been around 50 to 60 people inside, yet most were standing in the back or hanging in the bar. Regardless, KEN mode filled the near-empty venue with uncompromising noise-metal. The trio brought heavy riffs, solid grooves and a sound that meets somewhere between Helmet and Converge.

In all honesty, I took a look at this week’s show calendar and was far from impressed on the “loud music” side of things. The only show that really popped out and screamed “FUCK YEAH BRO” was this coming Tuesday at Studio Seven. Blackened thrashers Skeletonwitch are headlining a solid gig alongside neo-thrashers Havok, black metal crust-lords Mutilation Rites and local ragers Deathmocracy.

It’s the slow weeks like this that make you truly appreciate a solid weekly event. For the past three or so years, the staff of the 2 Bit Saloon has been working tirelessly to help promote the underground metal scene of the Northwest by consistently bringing the brutality on Mondays. Tucked away off of Market Street in the heart of Ballard, this bar hosts a weekly event by the name of Metal Mondays (how appropriate). With longtime metal head Wes Bearwood booking the event and serving as quality control, you know it’s the type of weekly where you could walk in not knowing a single thing about any of the bands and walk out blown away and half deaf.
