I ended up buying their amazing debut record, <em>No Future</em> and it was one of my most beloved new music finds of 2012. Well, our shops may not be the most aesthetically pleasing (although <a href="http://wosound.com/home.php">Wall of Sound</a> and <a href="http://jivetimerecords.com/">Jive Time</a> are eminently pleasant spaces in which to browse), but many of them do have great content. <a href="http://www.fingerprintsmusic.com/">Fingerprints</a> in Long Beach, California is another shop that should've made it. In <strong>Drew Daniel</strong>’s <a href="http://33third.blogspot.com/2008/01/20-jazz-funk-greats.html">33 1/3 book</a> on Throbbing Gristle’s classic 1979 LP <em>20 Jazz Funk Greats</em> (which I’m currently reading and enjoying), Tutti lists the songs she preferred moving to while removing her clothes. It's very important business.</p> <p>Last week <strong>Josh Bis</strong> <a href="http://lineout.thestranger.com/lineout/archives/2013/01/16/critics-choose-frank-ocean-and-carly-rae-jepsen-as-king-of-pazz-and-queen-of-jop">posted about this year’s results</a>. Every year I am wildly <a href="http://furia.com/pjs/voter_685642.html#2012">out of step with the consensus</a>, although sometimes stuff I like—even if I didn't vote for it—ranks pretty high (<strong>Swans</strong>’ <em>The Seer</em> coming in at #7 and <strong>Andy Stott</strong>’s <em>Luxury Problems</em> at #29 are <a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/pazznjop/albums/2012/">cases in point</a>). </p> <p>Anyway, <a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/pazznjop/critics/2012/685642/">here is my ballot</a> for your edification, apathy, or mockery. This week, the results of the <em>Village Voice</em>'s annual <a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/pazznjop/">Pazz & Jop</a> survey have been tabulated and, by runaway margins, we have a new king and queen of the last year in music: <b>Frank Ocean's</b> confessional R&B crossover hit <em>channel ORANGE</em> handily won as the year's best album while <b>Carly Rae Jepsen</b> took the prize for best single with the inexhaustible "Call Me Maybe".</p> <p>While Ocean was the decisive favorite—mentioned by 35% of voters—the <a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/pazznjop/albums/2012/">albums list</a> represents only a minor reordering of the medals platform that was <em>Pitchfork's</em> <a href="http://pitchfork.com/features/staff-lists/9017-the-top-50-albums-of-2012/5/">verdict</a> on the year in records—their hivemind put Kendrick Lamar's musical memoir <em>good kid, m.A.A.d. city</em> on top, but both agreed that <b>Fiona Apple's</b> multifaceted return <em>The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do</em> in the number three spot. Beyond an indulgence of a certain level of textual creativity in album titles, though, the votes reveal a year of <a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/2013-01-16/music/pazz-amp-jop-2012-tabulation-notes/">"weak consensus" or "inspiring diversity."</a></p> <p>Beyond all of the accompanying <a href="http://www.villagevoice.com/pazznjop/">essays and commentaries</a> on "what it all means", my most favorite part of this annual tradition is the giant piles of <a href="http://furia.com/pjs/table_album_2012_total.html">resulting data</a>. For instance, on a local front, the <em>Village Voice's</em> results disagreed with KEXP listeners' <a href="https://www.kexp.org/programming/countdowns/topAlbumsof2012.aspx">album of the year</a> selection, with <b>Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's</b> platinum <em>the Heist</em> garnering just <a href="http://furia.com/pjs/artist_5926.html">four votes</a> (one of which was from Charles R. Cross). Two Sub Pop albums—<em>Fear Fun</em> by <b>Father John Misty</b> and <em>Bloom</em> by <b>Beach House</b>—cracked the top twenty. Barcelona is dope: Cheap food, plenty of street art, and people of all nations engaging in all-night freeform bar crawls. On my last evening, I can’t sleep ,so after a night of sleep deprivation, I throw on the backpack, grab my suitcase, walk down the street, into the subway, down some long twisty corridors and onto the train car that will take me to Sants station, where I will transfer to the airport light rail. Judging by number of people with luggage, there’s lots of folks doing the same thing. Except for this one middle-aged Spanish guy who has one of those rolling carry-on bags. It was as much fun as you would expect, both their set, the entire festival, and the fun of seeing music fans from around the world come together for a three-day, two stage throwdown. Like the two people next to me during the ‘Droids set. I’m not sure what country the couple was from, but they were the biggest Japandroids fans anyone has ever seen, jumping around frantically, shouting along to every song. When this song kicked in, they lost their freakin’ minds. I even had to dodge a few fistpumps. But the Japandroids are the sound of pushing the entire stack of chips to the center of the table and saying “Fuck it. All in.” Yes, this track might be the most cliche one to put on a year end list in 2012 but you can’t ignore the power of this Springsteen-by-way-of-punk-rock barnburner. (How’s that for a review?) And I’m bummed because only the night before I put it together that the band formerly known as Dive was now DIIV. “Oh, you’re THAT band,” I said to members of the band at a pre-fesitval party, which is about as lame of an introduction as I could ever hope to make. Later that night, we snuck beers into another bar and I made out with a 21 year old French girl at a raging Halloween party. That has absolutely nothing to do with DIIV, but like the doctor telling his dying patient that he’s fucking his nurse, I needed to share. Today I’m going to list my 10 favorite songs in LITA’s expansive catalog; tomorrow I’ll tally my <strong>top 10 Light in the Attic albums</strong> (suspense!). </p> <p>A quick perusal and listening to this top-10 list will reveal LITA’s diversity and aesthetic acumen. We really are thankful to be included on your list but the mix, what is that all about? As a person that goes to rock shows all the time, almost everyday, the mix isn't remotely close to being in the same league as <strong>Neumos</strong>, <strong>the Crocodile</strong> or anyone else. <strong>Hit or miss booking isn't really a selling point</strong>, probably just trolling for clicks but its really hard to take this serious after that. More specifically, all of these amazing punk rock bands are from the city of Vancouver, BC. </p> <p>1.) <u>WHITE LUNG</u>: Last weekend, I went to the <strong>Rifflandia Festival </strong> in Victoria, BC. The best thing I saw there was the heavy, fast destructive punk rock band <strong><a href="http://www.facebook.com/whitelung">White Lung</a></strong>. I met two really nice, local teenage boys (I forgot that British Columbia's drinking age is 19!) at the show, each buying an armload of merch. They told me that they'd showed up early for<strong> Fucked Up</strong>, but were now in love with White Lung. WL's Facebook bio describes them as <strong>"three wicked witches and a greedy miser"</strong> and the album I've been listening to is called <em>It's the Evil</em>, so now I want to think of them as the punk rock incarnation of King Haggard from <strong>the Last Unicorn</strong>. (Note: The saxophone is not even in my top-10 of favorite instruments, but respect to all the greats, innovators, and virtuosi.) A contributor to <em>The Wire</em> and many other publications, including <em>Alternative Press</em> (where I edited his reviews for some years in the ’90s and early ’00s), and author of the book <em><a href="http://www.amazon.com/Running-Voodoo-Down-Electric-Music/dp/0879308281">Running the Voodoo Down: The Electric Music of Miles Davis</a></em>, Freeman knows his stuff. </p> <p>His top 10 is pretty damn solid, although I’d place <strong>Pharoah Sanders</strong> (#20) in there, for <strong>"The Creator Has a Master Plan"</strong> alone, and I'd rate <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Threadgill">Henry Threadgill</a> higher than 30. The list includes a lot of indisputable essentials, but as with any litany of this nature, there are some head-scratching omissions. I’d include something by <strong>Vangelis, Conrad Schnitzler, Boards of Canada, Tonto’s Expanding Head Band, Steve Reich, Porter Ricks, Basic Channel, Jeff Mills</strong>, and <strong>Shackleton</strong> [see clip after the cut]. At least. You may find some puzzling oversights, too. Also, the mag didn’t even pick <strong>Oval</strong>’s best album; that would be <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/94_Diskont">94 Diskont</a></em>. For another, <strong>Joe Tex</strong>'s feral gutturals in <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R6CiG3apcd0">"I Gotcha"</a> have to be here, too (<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Gotcha_%28Joe_Tex_song%29">Quentin Tarantino</a>'s got my back on this one). For yet another, <strong>the Birthday Party's Nick Cave</strong> has emitted his share of top-shelf grunting; maybe include <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UBIKiBC7zSI">"Release the Bats"</a>? What other memorable grunts need to be in this pantheon?
