I've been moving for the last week or so, and after all the boxes had been lugged away, I remembered this little song by the Weakerthans about moving. I played it quietly to myself in the empty room (song starts at about 0:50):

Now that the furniture's returning to its Goodwill home
With dishes and last week's paper
Rumors and elections
Crosswords, our unending wars
The black on our fingers smeared the ink on every door pulled shut
Now that the last month's rent is scheming with the damage deposit...

There are so many songs about moving on, about moving on up, about looking for a home, about kicking your cheating boyfriend out of the house, about one's house, about coming home.

But are there any others about the mundaneness of packing, about boxes and tape and the solemn emptiness of rooms, about the bareness of walls and ghosts of posters, the wistful sagging venetian blinds, the loneliness/hopefulness combo, the end-of-an-era feeling? The internet isn't finding any for me.

Sun in an empty room:

AM

We don't live here anymore.

Hey, does anyone else always helplessly weep as they shut the door for the last time and walk away?

Cash Money + Heiress Money = ???: I shit you not, Paris Hilton is the latest signing to Birdman's Cash Money empire. Way to stay relevant, guys.

DJ Marco Gets His Due: Seattle DJ Marco Collins, sometimes credited with "breaking" Nirvana and Pearl Jam to the public, is now the star of an upcoming documentary, The Glamour and the Squalor.

Boards of Canada's Mysterious, Globe-Spanning Album Rollout Continues: With a video played at midnight in Tokyo. What's up with these electronic acts and their crazy marketing schemes? It's about the music, man.

Ke$ha Goes GG Allin, Drinks Own Urine on Reality Show: Unsurprisingly upsetting people like the Parents Television Council.

BASED on the Runway: A student at Parsons fashion school made a collection inspired by the one and only Lil B. These pictures may be TBFW (Too Based For Work).

The Bucket List of Jazz: KPLU 88.5's Kevin Kniestedt has compiled a list of the "1,000 Jazz Albums to Hear Before You Die." If you're looking for a starter course on "America's indigenous art form," there are far worse places to start than here.

EDS NOTE: Says Slogger and Lineout-er, Violet DaGrinder, "I wrote a guide to Prince's dirty songs for a friend of mine, in honor of his tour, where he won't be probably playing any of them. I thought the Prince fan(s) at The Stranger might appreciate it."

Album Cover for "Prince" released October 19th, 1979

Cream—wherein Prince jacks off in front of a mirror

Insatiable—wherein Prince cajoles you into making a sex tape, which he will definitely edit into something tasteful

Electric Chair—wherein Prince tells you that what he has planned for you is technically punishable by death, in a sexy way

I Wanna Melt With U—wherein Prince worries that he may have just statutory-raped you, because that's kiiiiind of a lot of blood, but as long you're cool with it, chorus verse bridge

18 & Over—wherein Prince establishes some boundaries up front this time

Sexy MF—wherein Prince just wants to talk, dummy

Poom Poom—wherein Prince has been writing dirty songs for two decades and has completely exhausted the English language

Slow Love—wherein Prince recommends quality over quantity, mainly because your pussy couldn't withstand the quantity that he is interested in

Come—wherein Prince explains that orgasms (which he could provide!) will solve all of your problems in a universal-love kind of way, and isn't the ocean sexy?

Orgasm—wherein Prince... I don't know, ocean, whatever

Pheromone—wherein Prince misunderstands what pheromones are

Solo—wherein Prince gets incredibly melodramatic about sex

Hot Thing—wherein Prince asks if your smiles are for him, and you get the feeling that "smiles" might be a nudge-nudge-wink-wink kind of deal

It—wherein Prince tells you what he thinks about a lot (it), and why (because you're good at it)

Superfunkycalifragisexy—wherein Prince recommends drinking squirrel blood as an aphrodisiac prior to some seriously kinky shit involving ropes and guns and neon and office furniture... also, dancing

Rockhard in a Funky Place—wherein Prince is very coy about his erection

Ripopgodazippa—wherein Prince bangs some girl at the gym, I guess?

Sex in the Summer—wherein Prince muses on the wholesome joys of a public babymamma up-skirt situation

Glam Slam—wherein Prince sounds like he's being nasty, but in an obtuse artsy way that leaves you wondering if maybe you're the one with the dirty mind and now you're missing something deep... wait, WAIT... did he just say something about a BUTTERFLY CUMMING ON YOU? Ohhh, Prince.

When 2 R in Love—wherein Prince refuses to settle for making only most of the panties drop

Alphabet St.—wherein Prince tries to make "driving to Tennessee" a euphemism for orgasm but it doesn't catch on

Delirious—wherein Prince details the volume of his ejaculate in a vaguely rapey way

319—wherein Prince explores a fantasy about erotic photography and you get the feeling that this is a song he wrote in 15 minutes on some random Wednesday morning about some random Tuesday night that he had once

The Continental—wherein Prince has phone sex with a teenager and reveals his poor understanding of astronomy

Darling Nikki—wherein Prince meets a girl who is kind of a freak even by his standards

Jack U Off—wherein Prince expounds on the joys of finger-blasting

Tick Tick Bang—wherein Prince gets you all worked up with his tales of premature ejaculation, inspired by you, and you're welcome

Mad Sex—wherein Prince remembers that one time back in the day when he used to have sex, OMG, a lot

Head—wherein Prince lets you know the length of time for which he will eat your pussy, up to and including the time of your death

Violet the Organ Grinder—wherein Prince grinds his organ, metaphorically

Erotic City—wherein Prince cums on his own face while contemplating some sort of urban Madonna/Whore scenario, metaphorically

Objects in the Mirror—wherein Prince is excited that he gets to put a load in your dryer, metaphorically, unfortunately

Sister—wherein Prince suggests that it's not thaaaat weird to bang your sister

One Kiss At A Time—wherein Prince discovers foreplay in 1996

Sexuality—wherein Prince recommends sex as a good thing to try sometime

Peach—wherein Prince spins a tale of a crazy fantasy world in which there is this one super hot girl who doesn't want to fuck a nameless miniature man in women's clothing who writes political statements on his face with eyeliner and shaves his beard into abstract art, WHATEVER, her loss

Let's Pretend We're Married—wherein Prince portrays married sex in a wildly optimistic and, frankly, adorable fashion

Gett Off (Damn Near 10 Minute Mix)—wherein Prince points out that you clearly need to get laid and then spends roughly ten minutes giving colorful suggestions regarding the details of how and where that could go down, were he to be involved

Sleep Around—wherein Prince tells you that if you don't fuck your girl proper, he will surely get the job done on your behalf (again! haha!)

P Control—wherein Prince uplifts and enlightens all members of the female persuasion by suggesting that they close their legs and open a book, think about it ladies

Do Me, Baby—wherein Prince requests that you do him

Let's Have A Baby—wherein Prince can't stop imagining what it would be like if your eyes were literally on an infant, and he can think of only one way to find out that involves his penis

Good Love—wherein Prince wants to sing a really dirty song to you but your little sister is in the room or something so he has to be super cute about it, and fine, you can't deny that it's charming

Hot Wit U—wherein Prince remembers that it's the late 90's and Eve is going to be there in five minutes and you told her that you wrote a duet for them, fuck

So Far, So Pleased—wherein Prince gets a message from Eve reminding him that she is bringing Gwen Stefani with her, FUCK

Baby Knows—wherein Prince wakes Sheryl Crow up and tells her that Eve and Gwen Stefani are about to arrive, and wonders if she could keep them busy while he runs out back to crap out a song or three, and she can

Bambi—wherein Prince tries to convince a silly lesbian to reconsider her silly lifestyle choices

Dirty Mind—wherein Prince blames the victim

Wanna Be Your Lover—wherein Prince celebrates monogamy, but no pressure

Private Joy—wherein Prince celebrates misogyny, in a sweet fun monogamous sort of way!

Raspberry Beret—wherein Prince loses his virginity to a girl who is probably illiterate, but super cute

Soft and Wet—wherein Prince describes in fairly general terms what pussy feels like

Schoolyard—wherein Prince describes what a particular young lady's pussy feels like in such a way that you could, with some basic supplies from the drugstore and access to a microwave, conjure up this sensation for yourself

Little Red Corvette—wherein Prince suggests that you stop being such a dirty whore and find yourself a good man to settle down with

Buzz Feed’s run-down of CDs you see cluttering up used bins everywhere resonates with annoying truth. It made me flash back to my stint as a part-time record-store employee in 2003-2004, during which I'd roll my eyes as yet more copies of the same damn titles would arrive on a nearly daily basis. But the 38 albums in writer Matthew Perpetua's list are far from comprehensive. He left out these ubiquitous discarded discs (which are just a fraction of the deluge):

The Cranberries- Bury the Hatchet
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Björk- Homogenic
Beck- Sea Change
Santana- Supernatural
Moby- almost every title, but especially Play and 18
Nine Inch Nails- The Downward Spiral

Even all-time consensus classics like Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, Nirvana’s Nevermind, and John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme appear with some regularity in used bins. Really, anything that was massively popular at some point inevitably seems to end up in the compact-disc cemetery. Anybody have a Celexa?

Which is not to be confused with the plot to establish an International Men's Day, which I just found out is actually NOT a joke. I was wondering how International Women's Day should be recognized... even Google changes it's logo for the occasion! So I took an informal poll among some Seattle musicians on how tomorrow should be celebrated:

"RSVP to the Women Who Rock conference at UW on Saturday"
"If you are a woman, don't say 'I'm sorry' for one full day"
"Thank your mom for all the years of unpaid labor it took to raise you"
"Treat yourself to an IUD, it helps with mood swings and pesky unwanted fertilizations"
"Tell someone you are a feminist"
"Volunteer for a women's shelter"
"Keep up on anything you can do to help the imprisoned women of Pussy Riot"
"Support a female artist by buying some of their work."
"Subscribe to Bitch and send your teenage little sister a link to Rookie Magazine."
"Buy a record from a female musician, get some fresh air and eat amazing food"
"Re-imagine how Katy Perry should have accepted her Billboard Woman of the Year Award."
"Take your best ladies out, out a la Valentine's Day"
"Vajazzle your hoo-haa"

When I was leaving a party at the Rendezvous Grotto last year, I passed the upstairs theater and got totally sucked into the last two songs of a set by Wax Idols from Oakland. I ended up buying their amazing debut record, No Future and it was one of my most beloved new music finds of 2012. Since they are about to release a new record in March, I dug up six hot facts about the Wax Idols:

1.) The band is the brainchild of frontwoman/songwriter Hether Fortune who plays almost every instrument on No Future, and band name is a reference to the wax-colored Christs that glow in the dark from the Bob Dylan song "It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding.)"
2.) In one interview, she says that she was dropped from Hunx and His Punx for being "too serious," and she refuses to let band members drink, do drugs, or talk onstage.
3.) The band released and quickly sold out of their their Schadenfreude 7" on vanguard Seattle label Suicide Squeeze.
4.) One of her goals is to become good friends with Marilyn Manson, because she thinks they'd end up being "really good friends."
5.) Hether Fortune created a a zine called "Orgazm Addict" about her gig as a working dominatrix, and her tweets about her job can be pretty amazing.
6.) They have a video directed by the brilliant Hannah Lew (also the drummer of Grass Widow)

Wax Idol's second album Discipline & Desire will be out March 26 on Slumberland Records!

Flavorwire.com offers a list of the 10 most beautiful record stores on the planet—and not one from Seattle made the cut. Well, our shops may not be the most aesthetically pleasing (although Wall of Sound and Jive Time are eminently pleasant spaces in which to browse), but many of them do have great content. Fingerprints in Long Beach, California is another shop that should've made it. Of the 10 establishments featured here, I've been to two: Amoeba in LA and Tower in Tokyo. Both are mighty attractive and—bonus—full of great music.

Which stores—not just in Seattle, but from anywhere—do you think should be included in this list?

In addition to playing guitar for COUM Transmissions, Throbbing Gristle, and later Chris & Cosey and other TG/C&C spinoff projects, Cosey Fanni Tutti (Christine Newby) worked as an erotic dancer during the '70s. In Drew Daniel’s 33 1/3 book on Throbbing Gristle’s classic 1979 LP 20 Jazz Funk Greats (which I’m currently reading and enjoying), Tutti lists the songs she preferred moving to while removing her clothes. No matter your stance on stripping, the selections are fascinating. She even breaks it down to which songs accompanied which routines.

PVC outfit: “Hard Working Man” – Captain Beefheart, “Heaven” – Pere Ubu
School girl outfit: “Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick” – Ian Dury and the Blockheads, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue” – Crystal Gayle
Pink satin shorts etc.: “Easy” – Commodores
Some topless dance tracks: “Native New Yorker” – Odyssey, “Instant Replay” – Dan Hartman, “Lady Maramalade” – Labelle, “You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real)” – Sylvester, “Disco Inferno” – The Trammps

Now you know.

I am finally done with this disgusting cough, with leaving snotty tissues all over my house. But since most of my friends are still hacking away, I felt inspired to make a sick mix. It turns out grunge has a lot of references to cough syrup and being sick without making the whole song about it, but the Ramones win the prize for most lovable straight-up illness songs. Being sick is really punk!

Here's what I came up with:

"You Sound Like You're Sick" - The Ramones
"Touch Me I'm Sick" - Mudhoney
"Hospital" - The Lemonheads
"Amoeba" - The Adolescents
"Fever to Tell" - Yeah Yeah Yeahs
"Cough/Cool" - The Misfits
"Nausea" - X
"Fever" - The Cramps
"I Wanna Be Well" - The Ramones

I made the artistic decision to leave out "Down With The Sickeness," by the Disturbed. Any More?

Every year in its Pazz & Jop poll, the Village Voice asks over a thousand music critics to rate their favorite albums and singles (aka individual album tracks, MP3s, etc.) and then tabulates the results. It's very important business.

Last week Josh Bis posted about this year’s results. Every year I am wildly out of step with the consensus, although sometimes stuff I like—even if I didn't vote for it—ranks pretty high (Swans’ The Seer coming in at #7 and Andy Stott’s Luxury Problems at #29 are cases in point).

Anyway, here is my ballot for your edification, apathy, or mockery. Maybe you’ll find something you didn’t know about in these lists that will improve your life in some microscopic way. If you have any questions, you know how to reach me.

In what might be the most difficult arithmetic they'll do all year, 493 music writers managed to cast their ballots for the best albums and singles of 2012 by the December deadline. This week, the results of the Village Voice's annual Pazz & Jop survey have been tabulated and, by runaway margins, we have a new king and queen of the last year in music: Frank Ocean's confessional R&B crossover hit channel ORANGE handily won as the year's best album while Carly Rae Jepsen took the prize for best single with the inexhaustible "Call Me Maybe".

While Ocean was the decisive favorite—mentioned by 35% of voters—the albums list represents only a minor reordering of the medals platform that was Pitchfork's verdict on the year in records—their hivemind put Kendrick Lamar's musical memoir good kid, m.A.A.d. city on top, but both agreed that Fiona Apple's multifaceted return The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do in the number three spot. Beyond an indulgence of a certain level of textual creativity in album titles, though, the votes reveal a year of "weak consensus" or "inspiring diversity."

Beyond all of the accompanying essays and commentaries on "what it all means", my most favorite part of this annual tradition is the giant piles of resulting data. For instance, on a local front, the Village Voice's results disagreed with KEXP listeners' album of the year selection, with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis's platinum the Heist garnering just four votes (one of which was from Charles R. Cross). Two Sub Pop albums—Fear Fun by Father John Misty and Bloom by Beach House—cracked the top twenty. And, in contrast to my own terminally mainstream tendencies, Dave Segal maintained his place among the "least centric" of all critics.

While you peruse the full results, possibly making this face at the injustice of how your own favorites fared, here's a playlist of the critically-endorsed top forty-one singles of last year:

Let us know how you would have voted—being careful to apportion your hundred points such that no album gets less than five or more than thirty (see, math is hard!)—in the comments.

I'm forever fascinated with bands that can somehow 'bang through an entire set. How the H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks does it work? Do they train? Can a person beef up their neck muscles, so they will survive, night-after-night, on tour?
What's the secret? Also, what are your favorite headbangy-est bands?
I would really like to photograph them in 2013...

KT Wright / negative1photo.com

In Flames, Showbox SoDo, Dec. 2012

More photos, by KT Wright, from December's Lamb of God show, after the jump!

Says photographer KT Wright:

This show was originally set for summer, with Dethklok, and was to be the first show of the tour. But, then, Lamb of God frontman Randy Blythe was imprisoned in the Czech Republic on charges of manslaughter. Randy was released, and tours rescheduled. Lamb of God were joined by In Flames, Hellyeah, and Sylosis. I don't think I've ever seen so much energy in a crowd at Showbox SoDo. The circle pit at the end was so massive and strong that it took out all 4 bands merch tables—one of which I was standing on! I think we sent them home properly...

City Arts magazine asked me and several other local journalists and music-industry denizens for a list of five artists from Seattle who impressed us most in 2012. The votes will be tallied for a feature in its February issue, I believe. Below are the names I sent to City Arts. You've read about them before in The Stranger and will likely read more about them in the paper and on Line Out in 2013, as all have an abundance of talent and are at that very hungry stage of their careers. I encourage to you to follow their moves closely. (Please note that it was difficult to narrow this list to five. Seattle's kind of booming at the moment.)

01 The Numbs
Listen: "Freaks Easy"

This survey of the top horror-film soundtracks by DJ/Finders Keepers Records boss Andy Votel first surfaced in November, but there’s something timeless to it, so I’m linking to it for your damned, bloody benefit.

As with all Votel endeavors, he’s dug deep for the sublime and obscure goods and done a bang-up job explaining the circumstances behind the tracks and why they succeed at generating the desired effects; Votel’s writing and researching chops are as acute and incisive as his selecting abilities. Go read the whole thing, listen to the clips, and be scared shirtless here.

Hey, a year end list that actually waits until the end of the fucking year. HOW NOVEL! This is not a best songs/albums of 2012 list because it was impossible to experience everything, but here’s some stuff I liked. That’s about all you can ask for.

BEST SONG BY AN ARTIST FROM MINNEAPOLIS (tie)

GLOSS / Front Porch

I spent my first quarter century in the Twin Cities — In fact, I left there 15 years ago this January 1st to move here and be with you lovely, lucky people — but I always try to keep up with what’s going on in the music scene back home. If you’re bummed there was no new Real Estate album in 2012, this hazy cut of dream pop by newcomers Gloss is for you.

MARK MALLMAN / Dirty Dishes

I wrote about Mark earlier this year, so I’ll keep it brief by saying this snarly rock song got under my skin bigtime in 2012.

SOME SONGS FROM SEATTLE ARTISTS THAT I LIKED

THE INTELLIGENCE / They Found Me In The Back of Galaxy

Yeah, this is one.

DAMIEN JURADO / Nothing Is The News

And this one, too. Two words to describe this song: peyote headcold. Also, even after 15+ years in the business, I wanna call this guy Damien Jurardo. I don’t know why. Sorry, Damien.

SANDRIDER / The Corpse

Still local, but louder. “The Corpse” sounds like your local water park wave pool if that fucker was filled with dragon’s blood.

ERIK BLOOD / Today’s Lover

My favorite Seattle release hands down was Touch Screens by Erik Blood, and not just because it was a conceptual salute to pornography, aka that one thing in life that I actually like. But it didn’t hurt, nor did its nods to My Bloody Valentine, dream pop, and club hitz (with a z, yes.) All that aside, this was the second best song I heard while on a European subway this year. Freud would have a field day with me talking about how I’m in a train going down a tunnel and this song is relentlessly pumping piston-like in my ears and suddenly the world is an A-OK place. Doesn’t matter. I’m secure with who I am.

INTERLUDE

So about the first best song I heard while on a European subway this year....

It’s October and I’m in Barcelona for a few days before catching a flight to Paris. Barcelona is dope: Cheap food, plenty of street art, and people of all nations engaging in all-night freeform bar crawls. On my last evening, I can’t sleep ,so after a night of sleep deprivation, I throw on the backpack, grab my suitcase, walk down the street, into the subway, down some long twisty corridors and onto the train car that will take me to Sants station, where I will transfer to the airport light rail. Judging by number of people with luggage, there’s lots of folks doing the same thing. Except for this one middle-aged Spanish guy who has one of those rolling carry-on bags. He unzips the front panel revealing a speaker, and he pulls out a microphone, plugs in his iPod and starts singing a karaoke version of this song.

After a verse and a half, he starts rolling his gear towards the front of the train, seeking coins for the small paper cup clasped between his hand and the baggage grip. I don’t know how much money he made, but I couldn’t get that fucking song out of my head for several hours afterwards.

MORE SONGS I LIKED

JAPANDROIDS / The House That Heaven Built

Part of the reason for my trip to Paris was the Pitchfork Music Festival where I got to see the Japandroids. It was as much fun as you would expect, both their set, the entire festival, and the fun of seeing music fans from around the world come together for a three-day, two stage throwdown. Like the two people next to me during the ‘Droids set. I’m not sure what country the couple was from, but they were the biggest Japandroids fans anyone has ever seen, jumping around frantically, shouting along to every song. When this song kicked in, they lost their freakin’ minds. I even had to dodge a few fistpumps. But the Japandroids are the sound of pushing the entire stack of chips to the center of the table and saying “Fuck it. All in.” Yes, this track might be the most cliche one to put on a year end list in 2012 but you can’t ignore the power of this Springsteen-by-way-of-punk-rock barnburner. (Hell, check out the Boss-like wardrobe frontman Brian King was rocking.)

DIIV / How Long Have You Known?

I saw a lot of bands in Paris, but this is the one I missed. (How’s that for a review?) And I’m bummed because only the night before I put it together that the band formerly known as Dive was now DIIV. “Oh, you’re THAT band,” I said to members of the band at a pre-fesitval party, which is about as lame of an introduction as I could ever hope to make. Later that night, we snuck beers into another bar and I made out with a 21 year old French girl at a raging Halloween party. That has absolutely nothing to do with DIIV, but like the doctor telling his dying patient that he’s fucking his nurse, I needed to share. Plus this song will now always remind me of how it's much easier to make out with someone when a language barrier hobbles conversation and then it becomes a matter of logic, not hormones.

MAC DEMARCO / Freaking Out The Neighborhood

This guy is labelmates with DIIV, who were quick to recommend his music to me. I’ve been enjoying his songs, and it’s safe to say when one of them comes on, I don’t have to check iTunes to see who it is. The songs don’t sound like anyone else’s. That’s some hard currency in the early 21st century, my friends. And speaking of Dire Straits, do I detect a Sultans Of Swing influence on this one a la “Sultans Of Swing?”

POOLSIDE / Slow Down

Slow jam of the year that didn’t involve anyone named Frank Ocean or The Weeknd.

FRANK OCEAN / Thinking ‘Bout You

Yeah, another one on everybody else’s list, but the bridge on this track conquers my jaded what’s-left-of-my heart every fucking time. Frank’s voice dips, dives, and soars at all the right moments.

RETRIBUTION GOSPEL CHOIR / Maharisha

Many points for fielding a steady rolling riff-stomper, guys. But man, that video...

HUNDRED VISIONS / Last Cab From Tunis

Last Cab From Tunis by Hundred Visions

Does it belong here or not? Apparently it was released as a single in 2011 but made its debut on the band’s proper album this year. All I know is it was one of my most played songs and the best mid-period Talking Heads ripoff/salute I have ever heard.

PRINCE RUPERTS DROPS / Almond Man

And here’s my last new favorite song of the year, as in I just discovered this a couple of weeks ago.. I don’t know who these guys are but thanks to the internet I found them. Which leads me to my five favorite music blogs of the year. They’re in no particular order, but if you’re looking to broaden your musical horizons, these sites are a good place to start:

THE DADADA
Not only does The Dadada stay on top of new music, they pump out an intoxicating number of mixes and new music compilations. Their “Something For Later” series is downright essential. They also just put up a free winter themed mix that has even more great stuff on it. Easily the best music blog in all of North Carolina!

GIMME TINNITUS

The one music blog that never fails to surprise me, with songs of all shapes scattered across it’s clean white facade. A lot of the time words are kept to a minimum, which is awesome because as you know, there’s no sense in reading what other people have to say about music anymore. (On a related note, you’re still here?) Their Best Songs of 2012 post features six hours worth of mp3s. You’ll probably find something you like.

ROLLO & GRADY

An L.A.-based music blog that spotlights both the familiar and the obscure, usually presented free of comment. Their Artist To Watch feature is of particular interest. (And bonus points for always mentioning what city a performer/grouop is from. That’s what I always want to know, anyways.)

SIDE ONE:TRACK ONE

I can’t believe it took me until this year to discover John Laird’s music blog. Based out of Austin in 2006, S1:T1 gets it right, keeping the chit chat to a minimum but giving just enough to make you go “I wanna listen to this.” The (usually) weekly Quickdraw feature is a standout, running down the new releases of the week and usually catching some stuff the other blogs miss.

STYROFOAM DRONE

Another late 2012 discovery and right on time. See, while they have the usual best albums of 2012 roundup, they’ve also selected the top EPs and cassettes and the 30 best 7” singles of the year. So on that note, I gotta get out of here because there’s a ton of music that needs to be listened to.

Well, after years of reading all those David Icke books on the Reptilian Agenda and listening to every conspiracy for Mayan Apocalypse, December 21, 2012 is finally here. I thought I would have planned something more glamorous for it, like renting out the Space Needle for a BYOQ Party (bring your own Quetzalcoatl.) But since it's already the afternoon and the shape-shifting race of Reptilians have not yet laid eggs into any of our abdomens or whatever, I have decided to take the next logical step and started to make a handy Mayan Apocalypse playlist. So far I have:

"The End" (Doors cover)-Nico
"I Wanna Destroy You"-Soft Boys
"Curtains For You"-Only Ones
"Death May Be Your Santa Claus"-Mott The Hoople
"Five Years"-David Bowie
"It's the End of the World As We Know It," by R.E.M
"Blackened," by Metallica
"Till The World Ends"- Britney Spears
"When The Man Comes Around"-Johnny Cash
"London Calling,"-The Clash
"Waiting for the End of the World"-Elvis Costello
"Lizard"-King Crimson

Any more suggestions???

Seattle radio station KEXP is soliciting top-20 album lists from its listeners up through Dec. 21. Your contributions will likely shape the list, which will then be count down on the air in the near future. Vote for your favorite long players here (you can write in titles that don't appear in KEXP's database; only vote once, okay?).

I need to do some serious evaluating before I form my own top-20 list, but right now I can say that Nick Edwards' Plekzationz, Holly Herndon's Movement, and Three Legged Race's Persuasive Barrier will appear on it. More on that when the arduous task of reviewing and tabulating a year's worth of releases is completed.

On Wednesday, I listed my 10 favorite songs from Seattle/LA label Light in the Attic’s sprawling catalog. The hate mail continues to roll in. today I follow up with my top-10 albums bearing the LITA logo. This was not an easy task, but for you, Line Out reader, I go the extra kilometer.
Light in the Attic Records turns 10 years old in 2012, and there’s much cause for celebration. Today I’m going to list my 10 favorite songs in LITA’s expansive catalog; tomorrow I’ll tally my top 10 Light in the Attic albums (suspense!).

A quick perusal and listening to this top-10 list will reveal LITA’s diversity and aesthetic acumen. As someone who’s heard nearly everything the company’s released since 2002, I can say with confidence that Matt Sullivan and Josh Wright’s Seattle/LA label rarely issues a dud. Certainly, you may have your own fave 10 LITA tunes, and I’m eager to see what they are. Drop ’em in comments for posterity’s sake, please.

(*As of right now; this can change every day, forever.)

Also, Light in the Attic commemorates its 10th anniversary Fri. Oct. 12 at Showbox at the Market with performances by Rodriguez, Donnie & Joe Emerson, and Michael Chapman, with Suspence DJing before and between sets. Oh, dag, I just noticed it’s sold out. Hope you got a ticket!

What Will Be KEXP's Top Electronic Albums in Its Top-600 Album Countdown?

KEXP asked me and several other local music writers to list which albums—according to a specific niche in which we supposedly possess expertise—we think will appear in its countdown of the 600 most important albums of the last 40 years (2012 marks the radio station’s 40th anniversary). KEXP wanted me to name the 10 electronic LPs that I believe will make the countdown. These are not records that I deem to be the best since 1972 (although some of them certainly are), but rather ones that I predict listeners will choose to make the final cut. That list is up on KEXP’s blog now, for all you list lovers and electronic-music fans to peruse and pick apart.

The tremendously revered Seattle Weekly has published a list Seattle's top 10 places to see rock music. If you're looking for a place to see rock music in the city of Seattle, you might want to have a look at that list and then decide if you want to see rock music at any of those places. If you like the rock music that you see, you could go to Seattle Weekly's suggestion of Seattle's best record store and buy recordings of that rock music, maybe.

"TRUE FACT: Seattle Weekly hired Erin Thompson instead of me." —Travis Ritter, 2012

Update: After receiving an email by the Seattle Weekly to promote the list on Facebook, Rendezvous booker Nathan Chambers asked how the list was compiled and was told, "We polled Reverb editors for their input." Chambers then responded, "I don't want to sound ungrateful but what about the Comet and Chop Suey? We really are thankful to be included on your list but the mix, what is that all about? As a person that goes to rock shows all the time, almost everyday, the mix isn't remotely close to being in the same league as Neumos, the Crocodile or anyone else. Hit or miss booking isn't really a selling point, probably just trolling for clicks but its really hard to take this serious after that. I would love to hear more about this... Again we are glad to be on the list just personal curiosity."

So "Gangnam Style" is blowing up like crazy, and people are looking at/listening to K-Pop all of a sudden. To me, it seems like this quote I saw on YouTube sums it up nicely: "I want to live in South Korea and be RIDICULOUS."

Check out the new song by G-Dragon, "Crayon." Ridiculous and awesome... or ridiculous and ridiculous?

I just realized that the only three bands I've been listening to all week are from the land of Canada! More specifically, all of these amazing punk rock bands are from the city of Vancouver, BC.

1.) WHITE LUNG: Last weekend, I went to the Rifflandia Festival in Victoria, BC. The best thing I saw there was the heavy, fast destructive punk rock band White Lung. I met two really nice, local teenage boys (I forgot that British Columbia's drinking age is 19!) at the show, each buying an armload of merch. They told me that they'd showed up early for Fucked Up, but were now in love with White Lung. WL's Facebook bio describes them as "three wicked witches and a greedy miser" and the album I've been listening to is called It's the Evil, so now I want to think of them as the punk rock incarnation of King Haggard from the Last Unicorn. Except, instead of King Haggard trapping unicorns in the ocean, I'd like to imagine that White Lung are trapping the souls of 19 year old boys.

Lorie Moulton

White Lung

2.) NÜ SENSAE: I've been obsessed with the Nü Sensae album Sundowning all summer, ever since Kelly O wrote about them in June. Except, I haven't seen them play yet, because they played at Capitol Hill Block Party at 4 pm and I was distracted by Father John Misty's dance moves. They also played an 11 am(?!) set at the Toyota Free Yr Radio Stage at Bumbershoot when I was still sleeping. Luckily, they play Hollow Earth Radio October 12th. I don't want to miss them for another bogus reason, but eventually hope to see them in a dark, filthy basement show at the proper show time (1 or 2 am please).

3.) THE EVAPORATORS: Super fun Vancouver pop punkers in the Evaporators play tonight at the Funhouse! Don't blow it!

William R. Jans

Phil Freeman at Burning Ambulance has compiled a list of the top 50 saxophonists. (Note: The saxophone is not even in my top-10 of favorite instruments, but respect to all the greats, innovators, and virtuosi.) A contributor to The Wire and many other publications, including Alternative Press (where I edited his reviews for some years in the ’90s and early ’00s), and author of the book Running the Voodoo Down: The Electric Music of Miles Davis, Freeman knows his stuff.

His top 10 is pretty damn solid, although I’d place Pharoah Sanders (#20) in there, for "The Creator Has a Master Plan" alone, and I'd rate Henry Threadgill higher than 30. Have a gander at the whole list and learn some things… and, if you're feeling feisty, argue about omissions and rankings.

Burning Ambulance's Top-10 Saxophonists
01 Sonny Rollins
02 John Coltrane
03 Charlie Parker
04 Ornette Coleman
05 Peter Brötzmann
06 Anthony Braxton
07 Sam Rivers
08 Albert Ayler
09 Dexter Gordon
10 Joe Henderson

The Sept. 2012 issue of MOJO—with that mad synth wizard David Bowie on the cover—boasts a feature on the 50 greatest electronic records. The list includes a lot of indisputable essentials, but as with any litany of this nature, there are some head-scratching omissions. I’d include something by Vangelis, Conrad Schnitzler, Boards of Canada, Tonto’s Expanding Head Band, Steve Reich, Porter Ricks, Basic Channel, Jeff Mills, and Shackleton [see clip after the cut]. At least. You may find some puzzling oversights, too. Also, the mag didn’t even pick Oval’s best album; that would be 94 Diskont. Ah, whattayagonnado?

To read the piece, you have to buy a physical copy of the publication (it sells for $10 in the US and comes with a nice CD comp featuring cuts by Can, Plastikman, Throbbing Gristle, Renegade Soundwave, Pan_Sonic, Non, and others from the Mute Records stable, as chosen by Daniel "The Normal" Miller). But MOJO has posted a Spotify playlist here if you want to sample the music it has commemorated.

Chunklet writer Ben Johnson has posted an informative history of the grunt in rock music at vice.com. I agree with most of his choices, but of course there are some omissions, which may or may not be glaring, depending on your listening experiences.

For one, Edwin Starr's "War" [see clip after the cut] is simply the bomb of gravelly emissions. For another, Joe Tex's feral gutturals in "I Gotcha" have to be here, too (Quentin Tarantino's got my back on this one). For yet another, the Birthday Party's Nick Cave has emitted his share of top-shelf grunting; maybe include "Release the Bats"? What other memorable grunts need to be in this pantheon? (I know I'm forgetting some crucial ones, damn it...)

Anyway, he/she has compiled 100 reasons why you make his/her time behind the decks miserable. Peruse and act accordingly.

Here are the ones with which I sympathize or despise most:

15. Your requests aren't any where near the format the DJ plays.
22. You make silly poses at the DJ like you are DJing.
27. You keep trying to tell the DJ your life story while we are mixing.
34. You spill a drink on the DJ equipment.
51. You don't know the song just the number on the CD.
54. Your idea of good music isn't.
70. Your requests are more like demands.
98. You ask the DJ to play something you can dance to.

Maybe the DJs out there in Line Out land can add some pet peeves that didn't make it into the horrible hundred.
