If you still haven't checked out rockers <strong>Pony Time</strong> or <strong>Naomi Punk</strong>, you're seriously neglecting your ears. Pony Time's two-person assault is a friendly battering of fuzzed-out garage-rock thrills, and Naomi Punk gouge deep holes into your brain with their <strong>warped sludge-rock</strong>. You'll also find two worthwhile electronic musicians. The most energetic dancing of the day might come during <strong>Futurewife</strong>'s set: I can already see limbs flailing on the lawn, while the house producer's jams sizzle, slink, and <strong>clank into oblivion</strong>. He was raised in a three bedroom apartment in the Robert Taylor Homes housing project with <strong>four sisters and seven brothers</strong>. Mr. T was a wrestling champ in high school and landed a football scholarship to Prairie View A&M University after graduation. At Prairie View he majored in mathematics, but was expelled during his first year. </p> <p>T then enlisted in the Army and was quickly promoted to squad leader. Unfortunately, he found himself in a bit of trouble a year later, <strong>as a punishment he was told to chop down some trees</strong>. His platoon sergeant couldn't possibly have imagined how many trees Mr. T could chop down. He single-handedly chopped down over seventy trees from 6:30 am to 10:00 am! That's a lot of trees!</p> <p>After the army, Mr. T tried out for <strong>the Green Bay Packers</strong>. Then he worked as a bouncer, and then as a bodyguard. After that he became an actor, and then a famous actor. Organizer Sam Melancon once again has gone deep into the underground to gather a lineup of national and local subversives who explore the extremities of drone, noise, minimalism, electronic music, and avant rock. Now in its sixth year, Debacle bestows three days of subterranean aural adventures in three venues. Think of it as a concentrated spring break for hardcore experimental-music heads.<em> The Stranger</em> asked Melancon&#8212;who also runs a simpatico label called Debacle&#8212;to shed more light on this important event.</p> <p><strong>Did you approach the curation of Debacle differently from previous years? It seems like there's more emphasis on dance music (albeit very <em>strange</em> dance music), judging by Sunday's bill, which reflects the influence of your MOTOR night.</strong></p> <p>I may have allowed myself to dream a little bigger and go harder for certain artists this year. Overall, the approach was the same as ever. These are artists that I enjoy and would love to see live. That's my only litmus test. I write down a huge list of people I would love to have, and I send out e-mails or ask friends to make connections, and I go from there. As always, what I set out to book and what the final lineup becomes are very divergent, but it's definitely more interesting than anything I could have come up with in a vacuum.</p> <p>MOTOR is new to Debacle Fest this year. I wanted to go big with a whole night being a showcase of the local MOTOR crew, along with national-level artists that fit in to the vision of what MOTOR can be. I think that night is going to be phenomenal. This year, the conference that Sean Nelson once called <a href="http://www.thestranger.com/seattle/theory--practice/Content?oid=18491">a music nerd Valhalla</a> (sort of) returns to the city that birthed it. After hitting the road for the last three years, <a href="http://www.empmuseum.org/programs-plus-education/programs/pop-conference/pop-conference.aspx">the EMP Pop Music Conference </a> fragmented itself into five overlapping events that are taking place approximately simultaneously <strong>IRL and online</strong> this week/end (the <a href="http://www.ustream.tv/channel/empla">Los Angeles</a> and <a href="http://clivedavisinst.tisch.nyu.edu/object/popconlivestreaming2013.html">New York </a>sessions are streaming live right now).</p> <p>Although other cities are letting their deep pop musical thoughts simmer over multiple days, Seattle gets only one day of <strong>in-person intellectualizing</strong> around the loose theme of "New Visions, New Sounds." The day alternates between a series of rapid-fire Ignite Talks and "Begging to Differ" debates (topics include the identity of the One Beatles Album to Rule them All, and a three-way throwdown between Austin, Seattle, and Portlandia on the city with the best scene), an appropriately-timed panel on "the Joys and Burdens of Record Collecting." Show up in the afternoon to hear Long Winters/Twitter frontman <strong>John Roderick</strong> talk about "weathering a firestorm", about that <a href="http://lineout.thestranger.com/lineout/archives/2013/03/06/in-3228-words-john-roderick-tries-to-kill-punkin-30-words-he-instead-validates-its-existence">punk rock screed</a> that has <a href="http://www.seattleweekly.com/2013-03-06/music/punk-rock-is-bullshit/">since disappeared</a> from the internet and <b>Rachel Flotard</b> on the topic of "finding humor ... traversing a shit-bombed musical landscape." The event seeks to aggressively remedy "the vapid and <strong>self-deprecating gay culture</strong> that's televised and marketed." (I'm paraphrasing.) Garrett gushes, "Seattle finally has their first comprehensive <strong>queer arts festival</strong>! Secret Shoppers has played Portland's version, and it's great to have our own." The several-night, several-venue event kicks off tonight, and bounces us between PONY and CHOP SUEY. Pony will have some top-drawer DJing starting at 5 p.m., including <strong>Shenanigans</strong> and <strong>DJ K-Kost</strong>, but the lion's share happens at Chop Suey with <strong>MC Queen Mookie</strong>, <strong>DJ Bmorefree</strong>, our friends<strong> Amateur Youth</strong>, <strong>My Parade</strong> (an "all people of color dance punk band"!), <strong>Glitterbang</strong>, <strong>Ononos</strong>, <strong>the Need</strong>, and, of course, MORE! More on that in a sec, tho.</p> <p>Playing on Friday, February 22, at Showbox at the Market is New Orleans's own funky fucks <strong>Galactic</strong>&#8212;a really dope band if you like what people older than me (imagine!) call "real music," but damn good even (or especially) if your palate is all scorched earth from same-sounding radio pop- gangsta trap rap (and "Thrift Shop," of course). They cross up old-school N'awlins funk with everything nice; plus these days, they're armed with <strong>Living Colour</strong>'s mighty <strong>Corey Glover</strong> on the vocals, so what's fuckin' with that? Australian born guitarist/vocalist Jo Claxton (formerly of <strong>the Intelligence</strong>) and bassist Kellie Payne crank out sweet vocal harmonies and angular guitar lines a la <strong>Grass Widow</strong> or <strong>Delta 5</strong> over drummer Dave Ramm's steady Palmolive-esque percussion. I can't get enough of their <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universe_People">occult sensibilities</a> and their song "<strong>Druids,</strong>" ("I am a woman / feel like such a downer / I wanna finish my mimossssa") Highly recommended for fans of awesome UK post-punk-pop and the X-Files.</p> <p>Also, don't miss their <strong>album release show on March 2nd</strong> at the Rendezvous with the<strong> Tom Price Desert Classic</strong> and <strong>No Grave</strong>. The whole thing starts early, and it felt sillly getting sequined-up in the early afternoon. </p> <p>The Grammys are held in the<strong> Staples Center</strong>, which feels like any sporting event stadium, except it's crawling with people in black-tie dress code standing next to corporate hamburger spots and nacho stands. But those places are closed and <strong>no actual food</strong> is available during the (REALLY, REALLY LONG) show and apparently people passing out is not all that uncommon. When I sat down in my plastic stadium chair, it crossed my mind that the invention of the <strong>clutch purse</strong> is a cruel joke... you can barely fit a phone in them! Worthless!</p> <p><div class="blogImageRight" style="width:233px;"><img src="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/4b8d/1360633148-red2.jpg" alt="red2.jpg" title="" width="221" height="166" /></div></p> <p><strong><em>Important notes from the 2013 Grammys:</em></strong></p> <p><strong>*</strong><strong>Taylor Swift</strong> opened up the show with an elaborate all-white nightmare production of "We Are Never Getting Back Together," complete with dancing clowns. Meanwhile, her ex <strong>John Mayer</strong> was dressed like a game-show host in the audience with his new girlfriend Katy Perry. </p> <p><strong>*</strong><strong>Katy Perry</strong> consoled those who didn't take home the best new artist award by saying, "Don't feel bad if you didn't win. I never won this and I have my own eyelash line. Take that, Bon Iver." </p> <p><strong>*</strong>There were 20 performances this year&#8212;a record number. I was kind of bummed the speeches didn't run longer though, I kind of like babblers.</p> <p><strong>*</strong><strong>Boring tribute medleys</strong> happened every five minutes. </p> <p><strong>*</strong><strong> Jack White</strong> brought both his female and male band for two songs and completely slayed. His losing album of the year to <strong>Mumford and Sons</strong> made me so angry that I started yelling at the guy next me like a crazy sports dude, "ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? THIS IS TOTAL FUCKING BULLSHIT!" (But seriously, <em>Mumford</em>?! Clean out your ears, Academy.)</p> <p><strong>*</strong>During commercial breaks, everyone on stage kept commenting on what a great job the host <strong>LL Cool J</strong> was doing in this really paternal way, as if he were a small child we were supposed to be cheering on during a play.</p> <p><strong>*</strong>There were zero obligatory cheers when <strong>Chris Brown</strong>'s nomination was listed off. </p> <p><strong>*</strong>The best new artist award went to the band <strong>Fun.</strong> who ruin spin class for me several times a month. </p> <p><strong>*</strong><strong>Goyte</strong> won album of the year, and still looks like Gary from Partman Parthorse.</p> <p><strong>*</strong>The <strong>Black Keys </strong>(perhaps most famous in Seattle for their alleged <a href="http://lineout.thestranger.com/lineout/archives/2011/10/28/the-black-keys-allegedly-tp-house">TP-ing </a>of <em>Stranger</em> writer Derek Erdman's house) partnered up for a performance with <strong>Dr. John</strong> and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band.</p> <p>*<strong>Justin Bieber</strong> was rumored to have been conspicuously absent because he <strong>felt sad</strong> about not being nominated. </p> <p><strong>*</strong>Between the new dress code that basically only <a href="http://www.diamondbackonline.com/blogs/article_68f97422-75fd-11e2-8dfc-0019bb30f31a.html">targets women </a>from dressing too slutty, and Chris Brown being honored with performance spots last year, I'm hoping the 2014 Grammys don't include another <strong>surprise anti-feminist diss</strong>.</p> <p><strong>*</strong>All in all, every performance was a lot like watching the film <em>Con Air</em>... so much crazy action that you almost start get bored when the 15th climax point rolls around. I met a sweet music-industry fellow a while ago who said that he might be able to get me tickets to that unbelievable <a href="http://lineout.thestranger.com/lineout/archives/2013/01/14/mark-mcgrath-and-friends-cruise">Mark McGrath and Friends Cruise</a>. When I ran into him later that night, I faced the inevitable loud uttering of "HEY BREE, I THINK THAT I CAN STILL GET YOU TICKETS TO THAT SUGAR RAY CRUISE THAT YOU WANTED TO GO TO." </p> <p>Later on, former Neumos sound guy Evan Lasure and Lance from the Seattle band <a href="http://cumulus.bandcamp.com/album/cumulus-ep">Cumulus </a>were spotted in an after-party cabana next to Prince, and <strong>Jay-Z</strong> told my girlfriend she looked "very, very nice," and I've been hearing abut it several times a day ever since.</p> <p>I definitely found myself arguing on the phone with Virgin Airline's customer service the next day trying to justify reasons on why I had <strong>missed my flight</strong>.
