As SeattleCrime.com posted this morning, Seattle hardcore band Furious Styles has a new T-shirt design that refers to alleged cop-killer Christopher Monfort as a hero.

On the front of the t-shirt is a photo of Monfort with blood red splatter and a Seattle police badge under the words "Deliver us from evil." On the back, above two guns, it says, "Most of my heroes don't appear on no stamp." (See it here.)

Furious Styles have always been outspoken with their anti-cop sentiments. And members of Furious Styles have been involved in FSU in the past. The band's singer, Mike Torres (who supposedly designed the shirt, according to this thread on NWHardcore.com), was one of the FSU members arrested outside a show at Studio Seven back in 2006.

UPDATE: On Thursday, November 19th, Former members of Furious Styles e-mailed The Stranger to say that they do not support this t-shirt design. "We are sickened by the shirt's message and the fact that it now represents Furious Styles. The shirt was created solely by Mike Torres without any consent of ours." Read their whole letter here.

Ars Technica reports on the disappointing sales of the new DJ Hero spin-off of the popular Guitar Hero video game line:

The NPD Group's sales information for October has been released, and DJ Hero is nowhere to be found on the top ten list. According to Gamespot, the game sold 122,300 copies. That may not sound like a flop, but keep in mind that this number is spread across four platforms. The sales breakdown is depressing: it sold best on the 360, with 62,000 units moved. The worst? 3,300 units on the PlayStation 2.

What happened? Activision Blizzard spent a mint promoting the game, including hiring big-name producers and DJs to hype the release, as well as bringing in Jay-Z and Eminem to perform at a star-studded concert at E3. The game had strong early buzz, and it could still be a slow-burning hit. Our guess, though, is that you're looking at an expensive flop of game. Why did a title with so much going for it miss the mark in sales so spectacularly? We have a few theories.

I realized at 11:45 last night that I could probably go buy the Beatles Rock Band game somewhere, so I asked the internet and it told me that the Blockbuster in U Village was having a midnight release party. There was a ten year old kid who won the whole stash being interviewed on camera in front of the store, and a KZOK booth set up inside, but by 12:05 the "party" was long gone. Upon reaching the checkout counter my friend Kellen asked the clerk if they had any copies of “Guitar Hero: Monkees.” Both employees at the counter checked the computer system to see it they had it in stock. Unfortunately, Rock Band is not selling McCartney’s Hofner bass controller separately, only in the full band bundle. I have loved that bass since I was a child, and will find the controller of it on eBay because I am a nerd.

I haven’t gotten too deep into the game yet, but so far it is exactly what it is supposed to be. I feel the Rock Band franchise already looks better and plays smoother than the Guitar Hero games, and the Beatles game is easily Rock Band's best output so far. It gives you the option to calibrate the audio and video lag by playing along to a metronome, which should be helpful to people who naturally strum or hit a little too early or late. The graphics are beautiful and clean, true to the designs and imagery that accompanied the band’s music. The story mode moves you through their career chronologically, similar in style to the Beatles Anthology documentary, animated with nice detail. As a huge fan of the Beatles and of music video games, I am immediately pleased on both fronts. There a number of my favorite songs - "Helter Skelter" and "I Want You" specifically - and not a single one I dislike (because the Beatles are the most important band in history, and all that), and with any other Rock Band you were always guaranteed at least a handful of stinkers you never wanted to play. There is no other band whose career is more iconic, and whose music is so deservedly celebrated. There is no other band I would rather own a game of before the Beatles. Good call, Rock Band. You are going to make a lot of money.

Morrissey, predictably, is none to excited about an upcoming box set of reissued Smiths singles. From credible Moz fansite True to You:

Information regarding boxed sets of Morrissey singles, reissued Smiths CDs and LPs

8 August 2009

Morrissey would like it to be known that he has not been consulted by EMI/HMV/Parlophone with regards to two forthcoming boxed sets of Morrissey singles. Morrissey does not approve such releases and would ask people not to bother buying them. Morrissey receives no royalty payments from EMI for any back catalogue, and has not received a royalty from EMI since 1992. Morrissey also does not approve of, and was not consulted on, the Rhino box of Smiths CDs, or the Warner releases of Smiths LPs on 180 gramme vinyl. Morrissey last received a royalty payment from Warners ten years ago, and, once again, he would ask people not to bother buying the reissued LPs or CDs.

Nerdy as I am, I do not like this:

Later this year, MTV plans to launch a groundbreaking initiative called the Rock Band Network that will enable any artist—unsigned emerging act, indie cult fave or major-label superstar—to submit songs for possible inclusion in the game [Rock Band for Xbox 360].

Songs submitted through this process must then be reviewed by other developers to check for playability, inappropriate lyrics, copyright infringement and so on. Harmonix will post approved tracks to an in-game download store separate from its existing "Rock Band" store where creators can set their own price (50 cents to $3 per song) and receive 30% of any resulting sales. Gamers will also be able to demo 30-second samples of each track.

Bands who submit a song to Rock Band's "community" venture—and go through the work of coding the game's timing patterns themselves—will be thanked by giving up 70% of their sales to MTV. iTunes, with its own upkeep and staff costs, takes around 35% of each song sale. And if bands are in a contract that forces 'em to split the remaining pennies with labels, managers, and so on, then what's the point? The only groundbreaking thing here is how desperate <strike>bands</strike> content generators have to be to not only enable MTV's shameless business model but lend the company their bands' cred in the whoring process. Say no to narrow-channel music outlets.

Unless, of course, bands agree en masse to price their songs at the lowest value possible, 50 cents a pop, as a middle finger to the laughable percentage. But, again, MTV controls the outlet, so don't bet on it.

Last night’s show at Neumos, which I previewed in the current Stranger’s Up&Coming section, was a record release party for the Fall/Winter ’08 Journal of Popular Noise, a Brooklyn-based zine that includes 7” singles with each edition. The new issue contains 7s by Seattle artists Climax Golden Twins, PWRFL Power, and Linda and Ron’s Dad.

This week's Poster of the Week is a great poster:

Click to make it larger.

Designed by Nat Damm, the pretty poster remembers local musician John Spalding, who passed away in November. It will be for sale for $20 at all John Spalding memorial shows this month (see complete schedule here) and all proceeds will be donated to the John D. Spalding Medical Fund. You can also donate to the fund at any Bank of America location.

There's yet another Smiths compilation out apparently, which makes today as good a time as any to wonder: What's the best Best Of the Smiths? I tend towards Louder Than Bombs, despite its incompleteness, both for sheer volume and because it was the first Smiths record I ever owned (confession: I bought it because I couldn't remember which band was the Smiths and which was Catherine Wheel [I was young]; I think I was actually trying to buy Catherine Wheel, but, boy, did I luck out there).

Of course, no Smiths compilation is perfect. But, if you're building your own best of, what absolutely must be included, and what absolutely must be omitted? I'll get things rolling: "Cemetery Gates" must appear; "Meat is Murder" must not.
