*Based God's spelling.

It's so important and vital that you listen to Halloween-inspired raps today, otherwise your whole being is sus to say the least. If you're in dire personal need, or maybe just throwing a party and could use a soundtrack, there's a very credible "Halloween Hip-Hop" playlist on Songza that I'm bumping over here, but I'd also like to recommend the excellent podcast that The Stranger's Mike Ramos posted over on his Tumblr situation Hella Progressive:

ONE-TAKE #BASED MIX OF RAP (AND SOME ELECTRONIC) SONGZ ABT HALLOWEEN, KILLING PPL, EATING PPL, AND OTHER SCARY THINGS FOR YR ALL HALLOW’Z EVE.

1. LIL B - HAPPY HOLLOWEEN
2. ETHELWULF X CHRIS TRAVI$ - BLVCK MI$T
3. SPACEGHOSTPURRP - GET YAH HEAD BUST
4. HOT SUGAR - THERE’S A MAN WAITING AT THE BOTTOM OF THE STAIRS
5. DR. OCTAGON - BLUE FLOWERS
6. OUTKAST - Y’ALL SCARED
7. DR. DRE X ICE CUBE - NATURAL BORN KILLAZ
8. THREE 6 MAFIA - BODY PARTS
9. BROTHA LYNCH HUNG - CORPSE CAME TO DINNER
10. KEY NYATA - SECRET PASSAGE
11. ZOMBY - WITCH HUNT
12. DENZEL CURRY X AMBER LONDON X ETHELWULF - RIDIN N DA BACK
13. NACHO PICASSO X BLUE SKY BLACK DEATH - PHANTOM OF THE OPERA
14. LIL B - BREATH SLOW
15. TYLER, THE CREATOR - TRANSYLVANIA
16. THREE 6 MAFIA - WHERE DA KILLAZ HANG
17. FATIMA AL QADIRI - HIP HOP SPA
18. NACHO PICASSO X BLUE SKY BLACK DEATH - FOR THE GLORY
19. MAIN ATTRAKIONZ X GUCCI MANE - SUPERSTITIOUS
20. LIL B - CAPTAIN SAVEA
21. CHIEF KEEF - EVERYDAY’S HALLOWEEN

LISTEN HERE

After the jump is the new video from Non-Phixion's Ill Bill for the El-P featuring "Severed Heads Of State", the lead single to his upcoming The Grimy Awards. Pretty sure this song contains zero references to Severed Head Of State, which Wikipedia calls a crust punk band, which I'm sure—given the way that punk fans argue over classifications—is contestable. It also tells me that some years ago, SHOS singer Jack Control got stabbed in the midsection, "with the blow just missing the heart by inches." Now that right there is fucking scary.

Jonathan Gold may have a gaggle of James Beard Awards and a Pulitzer for writing about food, but he first secured his place in God's kingdom for his work as the LA Weekly music editor in the '80s, where he chronicled (among other things) the meteoric rise of the LA rap scene.

From Tumblr:

Asked Pulitzer Prize winning food writer Jonathan Gold if he would be the first guest on the Food is the New Rock podcast, and he responded with the greatest email I’ve ever gotten in my life…

Hey,
Sure, I guess. As long as you understand that with a few exceptions, my knowledge of pop pretty much slammed shut in late ‘96, around the time of the death of Tupac. I can talk with Talmudic subtlety about the 20 years before that, when I played in punk bands, ran clubs, wrote about rap, hard rock and what was then called “electronica” for the L.A. Times, Spin and Rolling Stone, and played the Boswell to Snoop Dogg’s Samuel Johnson - but at the point when all roads led to Britney Spears, Metallica became a boogie band and hip-hop violence stopped being a cartoon, it was time for me to exit, stage left. Ever gotten stinkeye from Suge Knight? You would have changed professions too.
jg

Bon appétit.

It’s an efficient 14-track overview of Sun Araw’s nocturnal, spiritual music, beneficial both for fans and those who’ve yet to explore the man’s output. Listen to it here.

French drone-psych multi-instrumentalist High Wolf has recorded a podcast for the Seattle-based Made Like a Tree blog. (Disclosure: I’ve recorded two for it, as well.) The mix is as profoundly spiritual and meditative as you’d expect if you’ve experienced anything in High Wolf’s ever-expanding canon. Any mix that includes Ali Farka Touré, Pinch & Shackleton, Conrad Schnitzler, Matt Carlson, and Cut Hands demands your attention. And it’s good to see an appearance by local global-psych subversives Master Musicians of Bukkake.

Read the enlightening interview and listen to the podcast here, and get your work week off to a sublime start.

1. Ali Farka Touré - Allah Uya [World Circuit]
2. Goat - Goatman [Rocket Recordings]
3. Master Musicians Of Bukkake - Prophecy of the White Camel [Important Records]
4. Nate Young - Comes Unbidden [NNA Tapes]
5. Blues Control & Laaraji - Awakening Day [RVNG]
6. Pinch And Shackleton - Torn And Submerged [Honest Jon's]
7. Conrad Schnitzler - Untitled (Further Records]
8. Psychic Ills - Transmute [The Social Registry]
9. René Hell - Bending (Voice) [Shelter Press]
10. Alemu Aga - Sele Sene Fretret [Ethiopiques]
11. Matt Carlson - Infinity Canyons [Gift Tapes]
12. Cut Hands - Impassion [Susan Lawley]
13.

The co-owner of my favorite Seattle record store, Wall of Sound, has made a podcast for one of my favorite local blogs, Made Like a Tree. WOS proprietor Jeffery Taylor has curated an eclectic 87-minute blend consisting of some of his most cherished cuts, including an unreleased AFCGT track. It's delightfully out of time (and full of space) and unhinged from current trends.

I know you're probably experiencing podcast fatigue, but this one's worth powering through your laptop blues to get to the muy obscuro gems (Nico Fidenco, Tony Mottola, Polanie, Girls Tape Store, and Post Industrial Boys are totally new names to me, and I'm old. I hadn't heard those Hendrix songs, either.) Lots of sonic revelations per minute here. It all makes perfectly illogical sense.

Listen to the podcast here.

Tony Mottola - Guitar Thing [Project 3]
5. Captain Beefheart - My Human Gets Me Blues [Revenant]
6. Hendrix - Can You Please Crawl Out Your Window [unreleased live version]
7. Warsaw - unknown [pre Joy Division demos]
8. Funkadelic - Funky Woman [unknown]
9. Polanie - Nie Zawroce [unknown]
10. Little Ed & The Soundmasters - Its a Dream [Numero Group]
11. Girls Tape Store - Melt [Sucre]
12. Jimi Hendrix - Level [Astan]
19. Curtis Mayfield - Think [Curtom]
20. Alice Coltrane - Turiya and Ramakrishna [Impulse!]
21.
It is my solemn duty to inform you of every podcast/mix that Oneohtrix Point Never commits, so I'm going to link to this hour-long one he did for The Wire. It's as highbrow as you would expect for that publication's discerning readership, but you don't need a PhD in musicology to enjoy 0PN's quirky, absorbing blend of avant-garde composition, drone, Plunderphonics, techno, hiphop, folk, electro, and Zappa.

Portland freelance music writer Robert Ham came to Seattle—his recent home for 13 months—to attend Bumbershoot and to record a podcast for his For the Ears series. We discussed grunge nostalgia and the 20th anniversary of Nevermind, up-and-coming local musicians we think you should hear, the Head and the Heart frontman’s soundman-choking incident, the rise of metal and rap in Seattle, and other pressing issues of the day.

It’s heartwarming when former Stranger music interns go on to do interesting things in the music world. Such is the case with Chris Aldrich (aka Ctrl_Alt_Dlt). Not that Aldrich wasn’t already making important moves before he interned here; he was promoting quality techno nights with the Sweatbox crew, DJing said techno like a champ, and producing his own tracks that any sane techno DJ would want to spin.

But now he’s booked for Decibel Festival (Sept. 28-Oct. 2) and has a tight podcast up on Headphone Commute, in which he spotlights several artists who are playing the fest. The mix is a velvet-smooth sampling of some of the most cerebrally sensual techno makers currently working, including Seattle's own Jon McMillion. Check out the podcast here and get more info about Decibel here.

Tracklisting : #. Title (Mix) | Artist | Label
1. Soltera | Kate Simko | Spectral Sound
2.

The Gaslamp Killer and Jon Hopkins have contributed a couple of mixes for the Low End Theory's podcast series. GLK's segment is an Andy Votel-esque sojourn through bass-heavy electronic futurism, ruffneck hiphop, and mind-bending, globe-spanning exotica—plus the Beatles' "Happiness Is a Warm Gun" and Thai musician Soreng Santi's version of Black Sabbath's "Iron Man."

I haven't made it to Hopkins' set yet, but if his performance at the Egyptian Theatre last year is an indicator, this one's going to be an adventurous excursion into experimental techno's rougher and funkier realms. (By the way, Hopkins recently has remixed David Lynch's "I Know.")

UPDATE: Hopkins actually delved deeply into some rugged post-dubstep heaters. You can't pin the man down.

Listen to episode 19 of the Low End Theory podcast here.

A friend who works downtown just found an ipod in a men's restroom in an office building. He was going to return it to the security desk, but then he scrolled through its contents and found, among other things, a stockpile of Rush Limbaugh podcasts, NRA podcasts (who knew those existed?), Kottonmouth Kings, and Fountains of Wayne.

My friend does not have an iPod. Now, because of the owner's obvious political leanings and questionable taste in music, he's considering keeping this one, which he scavenged in a public restroom. "I would buy new ear buds," he says.

UPDATE: My friend says he'll wait until 5:00 p.m. today, at which point he'll adhere to the majority rule of anonymous pollsters.

A couple weeks ago in this space I was jabbering about Seattle producer Your City Sleeps (aka Miles Kazemian). Now he's back with a podcast courtesy of Joe Bellingham's Sounds From The Sound series, offering more tunes of maximal chillage and serene beauty. YCS lovingly contours these six tracks into exquisite nimbuses of majestic synth tones, subtle percussion, and diaphanous vocals. Sweet alpha-wave-surfing ensues.

Music critic/DJ Philip Sherburne has recorded two podcasts—"one house-related, and one slow, dark, and (for lack of a better word) eclectic," according to Sherburne—detailing his favorite tracks of 2010 for Seattle-based blog Made Like a Tree*. As with all MLAT podcasts, an interview with the DJ accompanies the mix, and the one with Sherburne, as you can imagine, is illuminating. I wholeheartedly agree with this observation:

DJing is in some sense just an extension of criticism; it's a practice of interpreting music, making arguments, of a sort, and hopefully encouraging listeners to think about the music differently than they might otherwise. A good DJ set, in fact, "says" volumes, much of which you'd be hard put ever to fit into prose.

Read the whole thing and listen/download to the mixes here. Track listings after the cut.

*Full disclosure: I recorded a podcast for MLAT in 2010.

MIX PART 1: HOUSE VERSION

On the latest episode of Hit It or Quit It, the podcast hosted by Jessica Hopper and JR Nelson, David Bazan plays a pretty great acoustic cover of Radiohead's "Creep":

David Bazan covers Radiohead for Hit It Or Quit It from WBEZ on Vimeo.

You can listen to the whole podcast, with music from Sugar, Faust, Screaming Females, and more, here.

Former Seattle techno producer Bruno Pronsato has a new podcast up on Resident Advisor for the streaming. RA also posted an interview with Pronsato (aka Steven Ford) in which he discusses his many recent projects and some extracurricular R&D work for Madrona Labs boss (and renowned DJ/producer) Randy Jones' new software synth, Aalto, with which he's "Just making sounds and little patches. I am having an incredible time doing that!"

Anyway, this 59-minute podcast is an efficient way to catch up with Pronsato's increasingly jazzy, sprawling, and improvisational work over the last few years, if you've not been keeping up with his prolific flow of releases.

Richard Melville Hall's concocted a 49-minute aural regression to the era of Day-glo fractals, phat pants, cuddle puddles, warped synth ostinatos, and pitched-up diva vox. (I think I just used up my quota of rave clichés for the year.) This is a throwback mix to throw your back out to. PLUR, motherfuckers.

Two of Sound Off!'s semi-finals have already come and gone, giving us two finalists—Dyno Jamz won round one and the Makeup Monsters won round two. Both bands will compete in the March 7th finals, where the winner walks away with a promised slot at Bumbershoot! (And a bunch of other great prizes too.) Seattle I Am has put together a couple videos featuring the bands and footage of the two shows:

<param name="allowFullScreen"value="true" />
Round One

Round three of semi-finals is this Saturday with Cyrus Fell Down (from Pullman), Kids Get Hit by Buses (from Everett), Razpy & The Vigilantes (from Seattle), and SOL (also from Seattle). And, ahem, yours truly will be one of the guest judges. I want to see blood on the stage, kids!*

*Not really.
