Think again. </p> <p>We&#8217;re <em>still</em> excavating gems from countries not traditionally known as musical powerhouses (expect revelatory unearthings of music from the Madagascar psych-rock and Lichtenstein power-electronics scenes in the next five years). Another case in point is the imminent release of Romanian weirdos <a href="https://soundcloud.com/strut/rodion-g-a-cantec-fulger-the">Rodion G.A</a>.&#8217;s <em><a href="http://www.strut-records.com/content/musical-magic-unearthed-romania-journey-rodion-ga">The Lost Tapes</a></em> via <strong>Strut Records</strong>, in conjunction with <strong>Future Nuggets</strong> and <a href="http://www.ambassadorsreception.com/">Ambassador&#8217;s Reception</a>. Synthesist/songwriter <strong>Rodion Ladislau Roșca</strong> cut some amazing tracks from the mid &#8217;70s through the &#8217;80s with bandmates <strong>Gicu Fărcaș</strong> and <strong>Adrian Căpraru</strong>. The 10 songs gathered here traverse oddball synth pop, baroque European prog, spacey funk rock, and neo-classical composition. Rodion G.A. were off in their own world, probably charming the hell out of very few people and baffling many more. Now with our sophisticated ears primed for anything and everything, Rodion G.A. should get a more welcome reception than they did during Ceausescu's reign.</p> <p>As with a lot of music from Central and Eastern Europe during those years, there&#8217;s something that seems just a bit <em>off</em> to ears accustomed to the output of Anglo-American musicians, and that offness is often what most rivets us.</p> <p>Read more about Rodion G.A.'s peculiar history on <a href="http://www.strut-records.com/content/musical-magic-unearthed-romania-journey-rodion-ga">Strut&#8217;s site</a>. KELLY O Fri, 28 Sep 2012 18:09:44 -0700 The Stranger http://lineout.thestranger.com/lineout/archives/2012/09/13/ghostly-house-music-the-wind-harp-song-from-the-hill http://lineout.thestranger.com/lineout/archives/2012/09/13/ghostly-house-music-the-wind-harp-song-from-the-hill Dave Segal <p>The knowledgeable and generous <strong>Bob Husak</strong>, owner of Fremont music retailer <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Leary-Records/130001403716651">Leary Records</a> (and drummer for Seattle band <a href="http://bandthewest.com/">the West</a>), handed me an album at Sunday&#8217;s <strong>Art Ache</strong> flea market at <strong>Vermillion</strong> titled <em><a href="http://www.discogs.com/Wind-Harp-Song-From-The-Hill/release/2047456">Song From the Hill</a></em> by an entity known as <strong>the Wind Harp</strong>. &#8220;Take this,&#8221; he said, passing me the $18 record. &#8220;I think you&#8217;ll like it. If you do, just pay me later.&#8221; Such trust. I was touched by the gesture.</p> <p><em>Song From the Hill</em>&#8217;s cover features a little girl holding a flower in a desolate field next to a huge <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeolian_harp">Aeolian harp</a>. A double LP with a gatefold sleeve, <em>Song From the Hill</em> came out in 1972 on <strong>United Artists</strong>. On the inner sleeve, there&#8217;s some text rendered in slanted, fancy script, like you&#8217;d see in a sentimental Hallmark card: &#8220;<strong>Sometimes she sounds like a ghostly house and sometimes like a flying saucer but mostly she sounds like everything singing far, far away.</strong>&#8221; </p> <p>The music itself is eerie, gently fluctuating, quasi-metallic drones caused by, yep, wind rustling the harp&#8217;s strings. The text above does not lie. This is some otherworldly, haunting stuff, of which the clip below will give you the gist (and the <em>geist</em>). Reader, I bought the record. </p> <p>There are four sides of these subtly unsettling oscillations, issued by a major label in the United States. It cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be filed under New Age. In fact, it foreshadows much of the "dark ambient" music that would deluge the underground in the '80s and '90s. Who thought this was a money-making idea&#8212;and why do I want to give him/her a retroactive raise? Shortly after leaving the armed forces, Dixon recorded the LP <em>I'am So In Love</em> live at the <strong>Copherbox Club</strong> in 1980. It doesn't really sound like a live recording at all, and I can't find any proof that the Copherbox Club existed, but it has brilliant funk and boogie elements that just screams <em>I'm coked up on the Muzic Box dance floor</em>. There's a specific sound from that era, like <strong>Ron Hardy</strong>'s "Peaches and Prunes" edit, that just sounds so haphazard and reckless and great. </p> <p><div class="blogImageRight" style="width:212px;"><a href="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/4b12/1345663942-larry-dixon.jpg" class="zoomable"><img src="http://www.thestranger.com/binary/4b12/1345663942-larry-dixon.jpg" alt="Larry-Dixon.jpg" title="" width="200" height="200" /></a></div></p> <p>Not too much seems to be known about Larry Dixon (there's a brief history lesson <a href="http://www.discogs.com/artist/Larry+Dixon">here</a>). Copies of the private pressing of <em>I'am So In Love</em> command <a href="http://www.popsike.com/Modern-Soul-Indie-LP-IM-SO-IN-LOVE-Larry-Dixon-HEAR/310086531974.html">big bucks on the collector market</a>. Dixon released another LP five years later called <em>Can't Price Love</em>, which has a more polished sound that reflected the R&B happening in 1985. <strong>It's good in it's own right</strong>, but it doesn't match the lo-fi abandon of <em>I'am So In Love</em>.</p> <p>I was reminded of Larry Dixon by a Facebox post by Andrew Brearley, who's also known as <a href="http://www.galapagos4.com/artist.php?artist_id=79">Meaty Ogre</a>. He posted a photo of <em>Can't Price Love</em> with the simple caption, "Got em both now!" I checked. It did. It was released August 3rd, <strong>1987</strong>. It was Def Leppards fourth album. I remembered that. I decided to have a listen. I'm now terrorizing my neighborhood with hard rock "hits" like<em> Pour Some Sugar On Me</em>, and A<em>rmageddon It</em>, on full blast.<strong> Hairspray and jean cut-offs are in order</strong>. The cops will be here soon, I'm sure of it. </p> <p>Listen, <em>officers</em>, this album and just about every other hair rocking orgiastic, misogynistic, <strong>Mutt Lange</strong>-produced, sausage party to be released in 1987 had a huge effect on me, and these old ass neighbors can go to hell if they don't like the synthesizer assisted drumming of recently mangled Rick Allen. I mean, Def Leppard had to change their whole sound from hard rocking <strong><em>Pyromania</em></strong>, to synth sounding <strong><em>Hysteria</em></strong>, and they enlisted the help of engineers to build his drum kit. Do you know how cool that is to help your drummer through that? </p> <p><div style="text-align:center;"><iframe width="420" height="300" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/8JLrdNwmER8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe></div></p> <p>Also, if you remember, a contender for the best debut album ever was released just three weeks before this: <strong>Guns n' Roses</strong> <em><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Appetite_for_Destruction">Appetite For Destruction</a></em> was trading top spots on the Billboard charts all summer with Def Leppard (back when that kind of bullshit meant something), only Def Leppard had a leg up: the ol'Brits had not only colonized their island, but also Australia, so between the US, the UK, and Oz, these dudes sold over<strong> 20 <em>MILLION</em></strong> copies of this record.</p> <p>Then they tried to drink themselves to death with the proceeds and only made crappy records after this. But hey, I'm still here, rocking my frizzy hair in the humid Seattle summer, and I still love this album. I'm going to cut up some old jeans to go with my tank top. Arena rock is coming back soon, I know it. We stay in a cool lil' hotel with five of us in one room bunk bed style. At one point Dwyer comes in and notices the tangy foot smell we've been dealing with for a while, and when I point out the source (some slip-on vans somebody don't wear no socks with) he names them "<strong>pickle barrels</strong>." I have a nice walk around before the show and it's a beautiful night and city. But we're also playing on a kinda skanky street, so I see about 14 butt cheeks poppin' out of teeny miniskirts from bachelorette gals pukin' on white stretch hummer limos. The show is fun. Race. She would push me out, then <strong>he would beat me with a large palm frond for the half-mile walk to school</strong>. Also being the "yank" and the only kid in school who wore shoes, I would find the contents of my lunch sack mashed into a <strong>perfect tennis-ball size lump of peanut butter sandwich, animal crackers and fruit</strong>, and I became so accustomed to it that I smash all my food up into a ball to this day. Anyway, it's neat to be back, Auckland is very lush and damp, <strong>kinda like if Seattle forgot to mow the lawn and was too lazy to develop its serial killer vibe</strong>. Due to miscommunication, we get picked up in a small mini van (we have eight people, suitcases, and a mountain of gear) so I get kicked out of the band, Brigid quits, we tie Shoun to the roof, Petey in the glove box and Dwyer squats like an egg on the dashboard to fit. We are so wiped from the early wake up and flight I just <strong>hang at our promoter's house weeping</strong> in the shower until it's time to play. We have a 3:30 am wake up call, get to the airport at 4:30 for our four-hour flight to Australia with a 13-hour layover. Before boarding we have a 20-minute argument with the <strong>ticket counter lady who claims we don't have Australian visas</strong>. Hmm, we did a week ago. Oh they've expired, and since we have an eight-hour layover, we need one. (So you won't illegally get a job at a Cinnabon in the airport and work for 1 full shift before your flight) We just incredulously blink at her until she decides to do a "government override" (which means pressing the F7 key) and lets us through. Then as we are boarding, the attendant asks if we've paid our "exit fees," which means we have to go back through the airport and <strong>pay $40 a pop to leave the country</strong>. WORTH EVERY PENNY. As you can imagine, the Sydney layover is boring and full of <strong>screaming, frustrated tourists fighting over $400 <strong>Dr. Dre</strong> headphones</strong>. In a secluded corner, Dwyer notices a burt out cigarette butt smeared across the carpet where someone had just had enough and said "fuck it." For some reason this brings me joy. I do the same thing, only with some carcinogenic garlic bread from "<strong>Pizza Johnnies</strong>." Dwyer tells me "I'd pay at least $750, or basically the same price as a used <strong>Toyota Celica</strong>, for an upgrade to first class." After our 13-hour flight to San Francisco, I have a 5-hour layover before I fly to L.A., strange, as there are flights leaving every 20 minutes, but <strong>I decide not to pay the extra $80 to get an earlier flight because I am a tightwad</strong>. I will really regret this when five hours later the plane is delayed another 2 hours. Other highlights include the customs agent throwing away the snow globes I bought (FROM THE AIRPORT) and watching a dude <strong>WASH HIS FEET IN THE BATHROOM SINK</strong>. It's not all bad though, I get a row to myself on this flight. It's the little things in life you know?
