I don't wanna telegraph what happens here, but this music-free clip concludes with Diamond Dave drinking whiskey with an unlikely guest and taking a potshot at one of the most famous English punk rock bands of all time.

I kinda got stuck in a YouHole™ this morning, sussing out live Van Halen bits, at this point I can't remember why. I did, thankfully, find a real good clip that might be overdubbed? Maybe? Who cares, it smokes!

I had a real thing, a slight obsession, for Van Halen when I was a tweener. I'm still kinda angry my folks wouldn't let me go see 'em. I'm still not sure why they didn't let me go, I was certainly old enough, just not old enough to drive; they also refused to take me to see Elvis, but that's a different post (sigh). Now I'll prolly spend the rest of my day listening to the Warner Brothers demo set.

The Bizarre Synth Wizardry of Long-Lost Romanian Band Rodion G.A.

Think all of the great, obscure music's been mined by now? Think again.

We’re still excavating gems from countries not traditionally known as musical powerhouses (expect revelatory unearthings of music from the Madagascar psych-rock and Lichtenstein power-electronics scenes in the next five years). Another case in point is the imminent release of Romanian weirdos Rodion G.A.’s The Lost Tapes via Strut Records, in conjunction with Future Nuggets and Ambassador’s Reception. Synthesist/songwriter Rodion Ladislau Roșca cut some amazing tracks from the mid ’70s through the ’80s with bandmates Gicu Fărcaș and Adrian Căpraru. The 10 songs gathered here traverse oddball synth pop, baroque European prog, spacey funk rock, and neo-classical composition. Rodion G.A. were off in their own world, probably charming the hell out of very few people and baffling many more. Now with our sophisticated ears primed for anything and everything, Rodion G.A. should get a more welcome reception than they did during Ceausescu's reign.

As with a lot of music from Central and Eastern Europe during those years, there’s something that seems just a bit off to ears accustomed to the output of Anglo-American musicians, and that offness is often what most rivets us.

Read more about Rodion G.A.'s peculiar history on Strut’s site. Look for The Lost Tapes on May 28.

Unearthed last week: check out this amateur documentary about teenage riot grrls in Los Angeles, shot in 1996, by then high-school kid Michael Lucid.

It's almost twenty years later, and 'zines are probably dead forever, but the core "dirty girls" message still rings true...

Watch a 17-year old James Todd Smith rock Colby College in Waterville, ME, with his DJ Cut Creator; this was 1985, the same year as his scene-stealing appearance in Krush Groove, the same year of his platinum smash debut Radio. As LL raps, struts, beatboxes and speils, the crowd seems mostly unsure of what the hell is happening.

27 years later, many rap shows are just like this.

Via egotripland.com

Records from the collection of late, legendary hiphop producer J Dilla (James DeWitt Yancey) can be found on eBay. Dilla's mother, Maureen "Ma Dukes" Yancey, is planning to sell the vinyl in weekly auctions. You can bid on the goods here. Read the small-print details of the sale and watch ?uestlove's video tribute to J after the jump.

From the dillavinylcollection eBay listing:

1) A signed and numbered certificate from Maureen Yancey (Ma Dukes) stating the LP record you will receive is from J Dilla’s personal collection.

2) An LP originally bought by Dilla (on one of his many crate diggin’ expeditions) still in the loose bag Dilla put all his records in. None of the records have been cleaned or checked for defects. You will receive it just as it was in Dilla’s collection, possible writing on covers, old price tags, fingerprints and all.

The certificates are numbered with the plan of an online registry for Dilla fans to list their Dilla Collection LP. Including the artist, title, and whether any tracks on the LP are known to have been sampled by Dilla. This registry is dependent on the sales of the limited amount of the collection and response from the fans. Visit the J Dilla foundation web site for future updates.

Records are being chosen randomly (Ma’s Choice) so please do not send any requests, it will not be answered.

Good news for fans of David Grubbs' smart Louisville, Kentucky punk group Squirrel Bait: Drag City just reissued 1985's self-titled EP and 1987's Skag Heaven full-length. For about a week in 1985, I punched the sky with impunity to "Sun God", one of the greatest anthems of the '80s. Squirrel Bait also represented the last time Peter Searcy was interesting.

You can order those releases here.

Yesterday Mr. Segal asked "What’s the greatest rock song by an Australian band?" His answer, obviously, was Coloured Balls' "That’s What Mama Said." I LOVE that song!! However, it's a tough call to pick the BEST Oz rock track, but I'm gonna TRY - my pick is Zoot's heavy sike jam "Strange Things." It's a bit of spring, 1968 released in 1970.

Also of note: The D-Coys "You're Against" and Robbie Peters' SLAYING of the Zombies' "She Does Everything For Me."

Have some Alan Vega, y'all.

I'm sure the video meant something, back then. It is still kinda cool for being weird and goofy; however, it is very much of that time. That said, I like Vega's early solo work, even overshadowed by Suicide as it was he could shine!

Sorry for the late pass (a really, REALLY late pass, as this old-as-the-hills urban myth has been going around since the 60's)... But do know about the koo-koo conspiracy theories that Paul McCartney is dead, and has been that way for a long time?!?

Some friends and I went into an hours long K-hole last night, of looking at photographs and conspiracy videos of Paul vs. Fake Paul, aka "Faul." It is really weird that his eye color seems to have changed. And his height. And his face shape. And now, even though he's 70 years old, his face sags so unnaturally...

It's a ridiculous (but fun) debate—and all the recorded backward messages are deliciously creepy...

h/t to Emily from Stickers! (and damn you for turning me on to this!)

This mockumentary is on Netflix... It's fun to watch, despite Harrison's, errr fake Harrison's "Farrison" accent...

Innovative guitarist Helios Creed, of the most excellent avant-rock band Chrome, is asking fans to help fund the release of archival recordings he and fellow Chrome member Damon Edge laid down around the time they were cutting the classic albums Half Machine Lip Moves and Red Exposure (1979-1980).

It’s amusing to read so much wrongheaded (and sometimes rightheaded) vitriol about sacred cows. Making an appearance at #13 is ex-Stranger music intern Jason Josephes and his comprehensive putdown of Belle & Sebastian’s The Boy With the Arab Strap. Rolling Stone in particular had a knack for opining on the wrong side of history; witness the stupid, stupid slam of Brian Eno’s Here Come the Warm Jets.
I'm not sure if Chevy Chase's 1980 failed attempt at making a funny album, Chevy Chase, is very well known. If it is unknown you'll know why, REAL quick like, if you can sit through his (ahem) parody of "Rappers Delight." Ugh.

I sat through the entire song, and most of the other tracks on this record, so I can honestly say this is perhaps one of the worst records I've ever heard. Of course, most comedic/novelty records suck hella balls, but sometimes the extreme ridiculousness works at least once, but Chevy Chase ain't funny... it mostly doesn't make sense, THERE ARE NO JOKES! I hope some A&R jack ass was fired over this.

Halle-fucking-loo-yah. Read this unusually GOOD NEWS from The Guardian/Observer.

Suggestions that a Nirvana musical could be in the works—masterminded by Love's sometime co-manager, Sam Lufti, and going ahead with her blessing—have led the singer-actress to come out swinging. "There will be no musical," she told the Observer. "Sometimes it's best just to leave things alone."

For once, a rational decision?! Now watch Mark E. Smith do a Courtney Love impersonation, back in 1994, at the 10:44 mark. He also calls Nirvana "tramps" and, if I'm not mistaken, says "grunge is from Cleveland, Ohio."

Woohoo! We were not actually kidding last week when we sort of implied that this might be a regular thing, where we go through our purses/desks/shorts pockets on Friday night and find you cool treasures, then ask you a dumb question so you can WIN THE PRIZE!!! Dedicated to you Line Outers who work late at a desk on Friday nights, or who read the blog on the weekend. Go you!

Also, a bit of Housekeeping: Hey there, last week's winner, carnivorous chicken, wanna contact us to pick up your stuff? Just like Santa, we love giving you free stuff, if you sit on our laps and stay on your very best behavior! Those fries aren't gonna eat themselves!

This week's prize package only contains two items, but one of them is HOT HOT HOT enough to put behind a jump, because BOOBZ. You're welcome! The prize package contains:

ONE (1) pack of glue-on fake nails, French Manicure-style. Oooh, classy! Says music editor Emily Nokes, "Those nails have touched Gary Smith's torso." It's true!

and ONE (1) very special, Spanish-language, lesbian edition card game called, appropriately, "¡SEXO!"

Redeem your prize by leaving the answer to this question, which honors our spirit animal Alanis Morissette, in comments (we'll alert the winner here in comments on Monday, when we sober up again):

What fellow '90s icons played guitar and bass on Alanis Morissette's best-karaoke-song-ever hit "You Oughta Know"?

PRIZE PACKAGE PIC...

Song From the Hill’s cover features a little girl holding a flower in a desolate field next to a huge Aeolian harp. A double LP with a gatefold sleeve, Song From the Hill came out in 1972 on United Artists. On the inner sleeve, there’s some text rendered in slanted, fancy script, like you’d see in a sentimental Hallmark card: “Sometimes she sounds like a ghostly house and sometimes like a flying saucer but mostly she sounds like everything singing far, far away.”

The music itself is eerie, gently fluctuating, quasi-metallic drones caused by, yep, wind rustling the harp’s strings. The text above does not lie. This is some otherworldly, haunting stuff, of which the clip below will give you the gist (and the geist). Reader, I bought the record.

There are four sides of these subtly unsettling oscillations, issued by a major label in the United States. It cannot, by any stretch of the imagination, be filed under New Age. In fact, it foreshadows much of the "dark ambient" music that would deluge the underground in the '80s and '90s. Who thought this was a money-making idea—and why do I want to give him/her a retroactive raise? So much has changed in the music industry in the last 40 years...

If you're a fan of disco with wild rhythm from the early 1980s (and who isn't), you'd be a fool to not have a listen to Larry Dixon. Shortly after leaving the armed forces, Dixon recorded the LP I'am So In Love live at the Copherbox Club in 1980. It doesn't really sound like a live recording at all, and I can't find any proof that the Copherbox Club existed, but it has brilliant funk and boogie elements that just screams I'm coked up on the Muzic Box dance floor. There's a specific sound from that era, like Ron Hardy's "Peaches and Prunes" edit, that just sounds so haphazard and reckless and great.

Not too much seems to be known about Larry Dixon (there's a brief history lesson here). Copies of the private pressing of I'am So In Love command big bucks on the collector market. Dixon released another LP five years later called Can't Price Love, which has a more polished sound that reflected the R&B happening in 1985. It's good in it's own right, but it doesn't match the lo-fi abandon of I'am So In Love.

I was reminded of Larry Dixon by a Facebox post by Andrew Brearley, who's also known as Meaty Ogre. He posted a photo of Can't Price Love with the simple caption, "Got em both now!" I'm guilty of coveting my neighbor's records (again).

Def Leppard - Absolute Hysteria

I read on Stereogum that Def Leppard's Hysteria turned 25 today. I checked. It did. It was released August 3rd, 1987. It was Def Leppards fourth album. I remembered that. I decided to have a listen. I'm now terrorizing my neighborhood with hard rock "hits" like Pour Some Sugar On Me, and Armageddon It, on full blast. Hairspray and jean cut-offs are in order. The cops will be here soon, I'm sure of it.

Listen, officers, this album and just about every other hair rocking orgiastic, misogynistic, Mutt Lange-produced, sausage party to be released in 1987 had a huge effect on me, and these old ass neighbors can go to hell if they don't like the synthesizer assisted drumming of recently mangled Rick Allen. I mean, Def Leppard had to change their whole sound from hard rocking Pyromania, to synth sounding Hysteria, and they enlisted the help of engineers to build his drum kit. Do you know how cool that is to help your drummer through that?

Also, if you remember, a contender for the best debut album ever was released just three weeks before this: Guns n' Roses Appetite For Destruction was trading top spots on the Billboard charts all summer with Def Leppard (back when that kind of bullshit meant something), only Def Leppard had a leg up: the ol'Brits had not only colonized their island, but also Australia, so between the US, the UK, and Oz, these dudes sold over 20 MILLION copies of this record.

Then they tried to drink themselves to death with the proceeds and only made crappy records after this. But hey, I'm still here, rocking my frizzy hair in the humid Seattle summer, and I still love this album. I'm going to cut up some old jeans to go with my tank top. Arena rock is coming back soon, I know it. Also, check out this blog!

(Give me a late pass on this one: I just found out about Mister Mustard while at the Rendezvous last night, as his remix of "Come Together" came on the PA between sets at an electronic-music show. I was hooked from the get-go.)

Mister Mustard is a producer who loves the Beatles as much as Charles Mudede hates them. The Mustardly one fancies the Fab Four so much, he's taken it upon himself to remix several Beatles songs... for the sheer enjoyment of it. MM beefs and funks up the beats, rearranges the tracks, and mashes up myriad Lennon-McCartney tunes with the cleverness of someone who's spent unhealthy amounts of time in front of DJ software programs.
Hot damn, the internet just keeps on giving, whether we deserve it or not. Another case in point: These demos cut by Wire in 1976, gathered in this 37-minute video. The 14 songs here reflect Wire's scabrous, snotty punk roots, from which they'd advance into more honed meta-punk missives on Pink Flag and into weirder avant-pop avenues on Chairs Missing and 154. Grok these British legends at their rawest below.

Tracklist:
1. Prove Myself (0:07)
2. Mary Is A Dyke (2:27)
3. Bad Night (3:35)
4. Can't Stand It No More (4:46)
5. Love (6:38)
6. Midnight Train (8:25)
7. What Is This Feeling Called Love? (13:32)
8. TV (15:06)
9. Lost Boy (17:36)
10. Johnny Piss Off (19:38)
11. After Midnight (24:08)
12. Fade (25:59)
13. Bitch (29:18)
14. Roadrunner (32:05)

I didn't know this BBC documentary existed about HK. And it's posted, in it's entirety, on the YT. Rain, be damned.

"It was like Star Trek... with drugs. And long hair." —Lemmy Kilmister

Hello Music Fans! Hey remember about 4 months ago when Thee Oh Sees toured Australia and wrote a tour journal and there was no final installment? No? Me neither, but here is the proof it exists, rescued from the netherworld of my computer I barely know how to use. Better late than never? Or better late than ever? You decide... Read Part One Here; Read Part Two Here

Nicci Reid

Boogie Fever

PERTH
We gotta get up hells of early for our flight to Perth today, and I am starting to get sick. But at least the weather is perfect for cold, humid, and sticky... and 100 degrees. Our hotel has a hot tub in it so me and Shoun relax to the max. The original drummer from the the Scientists, the Saints, the Victims and Beasts of Bourbon is playing tonight but I feel like hot garbage so, I just moan on the hotel bed and take the short walk to the club and get there five minutes before we play and as soon as we're done (after I eat some sliced fruit that must have been cut with a knife soaking in onion juice) and walk straight back to the hotel. My sweet Lord I wish this was an option every night.

Lars Finberg

Baller Style (kinda...)

ADELAIDE
We fly into Adelaide and get picked up by Tim and Nick and it feels good to have the gang back together. We stay in a cool lil' hotel with five of us in one room bunk bed style. At one point Dwyer comes in and notices the tangy foot smell we've been dealing with for a while, and when I point out the source (some slip-on vans somebody don't wear no socks with) he names them "pickle barrels." I have a nice walk around before the show and it's a beautiful night and city. But we're also playing on a kinda skanky street, so I see about 14 butt cheeks poppin' out of teeny miniskirts from bachelorette gals pukin' on white stretch hummer limos. The show is fun. A sweet girl brings me a bag of records by bands from Adelaide and, I walk home early and try to sleep out the rest of my sickness while mosquitos bite me all night.

Adelaide

Lars Finberg

Healthy choices at the gas station

DEANS MARCH
On our long drive to Deans March, where we have two days off at Nicci's bad ass dad's (see toilet pic) house, we stop to see some albino kangaroos and I steal Shoun's Ipod and listen to a bunch of things I haven't heard like the Jay-Z and Kanye LP (mindblowingly good), Kurt Vile Smoke Ring for My Halo, and the Beets Let the Poison Out. We spend the next tow days BBQ'ing and surfing and swimming with our pals from Eddy Current Suppression Ring. Boo Hoo.

Lars Finberg

Aussie Knowhow

MELBOURNE
Tonight we play with our favorite band Total Control. They are great blah blah blah.

MELBOURNE DAY 2
We have a lovely day off today and we get to walk the streets of Melbourne, check out our friend Kyle Ranson's art installation, eat some middling asian food, and Shoun....drumroll please...(keep going)...(longer)....(longer)...(longer)...(LONGER).............BUYS!... NEW!... SHORTS! (Insert slow golf clap here). After dinner (why 2 dudes from California are eating $10 burritos is Australia is a mystery) we go watch some local bands, and since Nicci is a bigshot in this town we get to stay after hours and have a dance party and Brigid crowns me her third favorite dance partner ever. Choke on that.

Lars Finberg

The extROADinary tour manager Nicci Reid

Lars Finberg

Petey

MELBOURNE DAY 3
Today we play an early afternoon rooftop show with the great band U.V. Race. They rule, it is sunny, people are stoked, I meet some real special people, and I have no complaints, so I am at a loss for something to write here.

Lars Finberg

Auckland Space Needle

AUCKLAND
My family lived in Auckland for a year when I was seven, so my main memory is my mother forcing me walk to school with the extremely polite kid named Shawn, who would very sweetly ask her each morning "Good morning Mrs. Finberg, I would love to accompany Lars on this walk to school today if that's all right with you," while I would cower behind the door whispering/begging "no no no no no." She would push me out, then he would beat me with a large palm frond for the half-mile walk to school. Also being the "yank" and the only kid in school who wore shoes, I would find the contents of my lunch sack mashed into a perfect tennis-ball size lump of peanut butter sandwich, animal crackers and fruit, and I became so accustomed to it that I smash all my food up into a ball to this day. Anyway, it's neat to be back, Auckland is very lush and damp, kinda like if Seattle forgot to mow the lawn and was too lazy to develop its serial killer vibe. Due to miscommunication, we get picked up in a small mini van (we have eight people, suitcases, and a mountain of gear) so I get kicked out of the band, Brigid quits, we tie Shoun to the roof, Petey in the glove box and Dwyer squats like an egg on the dashboard to fit. We are so wiped from the early wake up and flight I just hang at our promoter's house weeping in the shower until it's time to play. The show is very crowded and dancey, but I notice a bored-looking girl right in front with one hand holding onto Dwyer's mic stand for balance and texting with the other, and I long for a rusty pair of hedge clippers.

WELLINGTON
We came, we saw, we played, we left.

Lars Finberg

The "Inedible"l Mke Shoun

WHANGANUI
We play a little basement tonight that smells so gross I'm afraid of growing mushrooms in my nostrils. After the show a friend has brought us roman candles to shoot off, and Nick lights it upside down like a bottle rocket and inadvertently points it directly at his chest, bursts into flames and dies. Just kidding, Dwyer saves him and then we go to the house, and line up on these little cots in the living room like the 7 dwarves (Wheezy, Coughy, Snorey, Chokey, Twitchy, Wiggly, and Night Terrory).

WELLINGTON
We have two glorious days off at a cool little rental house with a beautiful view, and I luck into my own room, or, more accurately shove my way in front of everyone and find the first empty room and throw my dirty underwear all over the bed, lick the outside doorknob and drag the dresser in front of the door.
Brigid and Nicci cook wonderful meals and it is a very pleasant rest for the "adventure" ahead.

Lars Finberg

Summer Rental

HOME
The flight home is a little rough. We have a 3:30 am wake up call, get to the airport at 4:30 for our four-hour flight to Australia with a 13-hour layover. Before boarding we have a 20-minute argument with the ticket counter lady who claims we don't have Australian visas. Hmm, we did a week ago. Oh they've expired, and since we have an eight-hour layover, we need one. (So you won't illegally get a job at a Cinnabon in the airport and work for 1 full shift before your flight) We just incredulously blink at her until she decides to do a "government override" (which means pressing the F7 key) and lets us through. Then as we are boarding, the attendant asks if we've paid our "exit fees," which means we have to go back through the airport and pay $40 a pop to leave the country. WORTH EVERY PENNY. As you can imagine, the Sydney layover is boring and full of screaming, frustrated tourists fighting over $400 Dr. Dre headphones. In a secluded corner, Dwyer notices a burt out cigarette butt smeared across the carpet where someone had just had enough and said "fuck it." For some reason this brings me joy. I do the same thing, only with some carcinogenic garlic bread from "Pizza Johnnies." Dwyer tells me "I'd pay at least $750, or basically the same price as a used Toyota Celica, for an upgrade to first class." After our 13-hour flight to San Francisco, I have a 5-hour layover before I fly to L.A., strange, as there are flights leaving every 20 minutes, but I decide not to pay the extra $80 to get an earlier flight because I am a tightwad. I will really regret this when five hours later the plane is delayed another 2 hours. Other highlights include the customs agent throwing away the snow globes I bought (FROM THE AIRPORT) and watching a dude WASH HIS FEET IN THE BATHROOM SINK. It's not all bad though, I get a row to myself on this flight. It's the little things in life you know? Too bad it's only 45 minutes.

May 19 at Vermillion Gallery and Bar. It's open to the public from 3 pm to 8 pm with a $3 entry fee (early entry from 1 pm-3 pm costs $10—and you have to contend with Mike Nipper's elbows). More than 20 dealers from Seattle, Spokane, Portland, and even Detroit will be selling LPs and 45s of many different styles, offering a plethora of gems. The Big Dig always leaves my wallet depleted and my shoulders sore. To soundtrack your digging experience, several DJs—including selectors from the Dug crew, Brian Hill, Explorateur, and yours unruly—will be spinning crucial cuts that you probably won't be able to Shazam (including the Rufus Harley jam after the cut).
