Is Tim Dog Really Dead? A Mississippi Prosecutor Doesn't Think So...

Back in February several music blogs (including The Source, Billboard, Pitchfork) reported that "Fuck Compton" rapper Tim Dog died from a seizure at the age of 46. But now a Mississippi prosecutor is accusing the rapper of faking his death to escape a court-ordered debt repayment.

Pitchfork says:

"I need proof," Jubera told WREG. "I need a death certificate showing that he's dead because as far as I'm concerned, he's alive." Apparently, Jubera was swayed by the arguments of a woman named Esther Pilgrim, who, last week, accused Tim Dog (born Timothy Blair) of faking his own death to avoid paying her tens of thousands of dollars. Pilgrim was one of many women the rapper defrauded through an online dating scheme. (He was charged with grand larceny.)

If Blair is, indeed, alive, his case will go down as an example of how easily misinformation can spread in the age of the rapid-fire online news cycle. Virtually all of the original reports of the rapper's death— including Pitchfork's— can be connected to a story by The Source that can no longer be found at its original link. No original reports of his death that we have found indicated where he died or how his death was discovered.

So far no one has been able to find a death certificate, but the warrant will (obviously) be dropped if someone can prove Tim Dog is, in fact, dead.

Weird.

[ Comment on this story ]

This robot-quadrotor-operated rendition of the James Bond theme popped onto YouTube in 2012, but you may have missed it. It's one of the best things ever to be uploaded onto that site. Wonder what John Barry's estate thinks of this...

Feedbands.com: A Vinyl Subscription Service Aiming to Keep the Music Industry Bland

You know that feeling of doom that you get when you see a new business idea that is bound to fail? That's exactly how I felt when I gazed upon the Feedbands website.

Apparently, it works like this: you send $19.95 (+ shipping and "handling") to Feedbands and they send you a 180g vinyl record every month. You've never heard of this band though, because Feedbands has rescued them from the sea of obscurity to present specifically to you. You're able to hear brief clips of the music and even see a picture of the band, but the name won't be revealed until you get the LP in the mail. Why? Because Feedbands doesn't want you to hear the audio as "streaming low quality mp3's off the internet." If you don't like the record, you can send it back for a refund. I'm not sure about the shipping and handling though, there's a chance that might be on you.

If you're not sure if you'll like buying a record that you know nothing about, you're in for a treat. Feedbands guarantees that the record you receive "will rock."

Is the average vinyl consumer willing to shell out $25 every month to receive a record by a band that hardly exists? Does a person want to deal with the hassle of packaging and returning a record that they don't want every month? As my nine-year-old cousin used to say, "PROLLY NOT."

If you have a second, have a look at their website. It's a larf-riot.

[ Comment on this story ]

Brazilian illustrator Butcher Billy has a series of drawings featuring post-punk and new-wave icons recontextualized as superheroes. The set includes Morrissey, Siouxsie Sioux, John Lydon, Ian Curtis, Devo, Robert Smith, and Billy Idol recast as comic-book characters you probably read about as a youth. Gawk at the well-wrought pictures here.

Dunno about you, but this seems to me like a very Derek Erdmaniacal project.

Why Doesn't Anyone Tap Dance Anymore?

This tap-dancin' girl is AMAZING! Dig the outfit AND the air piano playing!! GODDAMN! (sigh) For all the goofy and glitter it IS actually pretty cute to watch.

It's interesting to note the music Miss Melissa Ann Ledwon is tap dancing to is generic library music; I couldn't imagine music like that being something used as a soundtrack for ANYTHING today. Well, if it was, it'd be a SAMPLED bit and laid over fresh beatz, I'd reckon.

I just learned about this show, Stairway To Stardom. It was a public access show that ran in NYC through the '80s and into the early '90s; the clips I've watched so far are weirdo GOLD! Um, I'm not sure if Stairway To Stardom was actually ever a stairway to anywhere, for anyone, ever.

LOL WUT. Thanks to hot tipper Travis Ritter for bringing this to my attention. I haven't watched The Office in a minute, but maybe a guest appearance from the soul-patch king himself will change all that!*

"Sugar Ray’s Mark McGrath guest stars on the NBC Emmy award winning hit series, The Office this Thursday, May 9th, 2013 at 9/8c. McGrath appears on the second-to-last episode. The series’ finale airs on May 16th.”

Oh shit! All'a y'all trap music DJs BEWARE!! If you ever go to Montreal to lord over the wheels of steels/laptop computer program expect to be sexually assaulted in the STREET:

DJ Blitz, a 37 year old trap music DJ, was walking down St-Laurent on his way to a show when he was accosted by a fan. "This scraggy looking guy wearing a bomber jacket just shows up out of the middle of nowhere, unzips his diesel jeans and slaps me with his… private parts," said Blitz. "I was in a state of shock. He was completely exposed, stroking himself in the middle of a very busy street, telling me how much he liked my music."

The fact that it was -15 outside did not deter this deleterious fan from rubbing one out in the middle of St-Laurent. "I don't know if he was on drugs, or crazy, or what. I started walking away from him, but he just kept following me around, his manhood in hand, a big creepy smile on his face. He kept telling me how hot I made him, and yelling the word crunk over and over again. "

READ THE FULL PIECE. Heads up, the cops did NOT nab their suspect. Um... and is "crunk" still a thing in Canadia?

Regarding "dropping the ball," in my defense, I only scan RAVENEWS bi-annually and I only rave a couple times year. Also: their rave coverage is the worst! Not really, they know EVERYTHING ABOUT RAVES!

Brother JT hosts the best damn talk show on the net, Trippin’ Balls. This new segment with the great Baltimore musician Ed Schrader of Ed Schrader's Music Beat is typically twisted, knuckleballing through time and space with semi-lucid, lysergic logic. Let us hope that this series and this badass, absurdity-mongering Bro never stop befuddling us.

After the jump, check out the infectious, gently bent "Somebody Down There" from Brother JT's new album on Thrill Jockey, The Svelteness of Boogietude.

Yesterday a friend of mine tipped me off to Jar, the new album by Pennsylvania rock band Daylight. "I can't tell if this is like great ’90s rock or the shitty ’00 stuff," he said. I spent the rest of the afternoon trying to figure it out myself.

The song "Outside of Me" has a nice, poppy Foo Fighters feel and "Life In a Jar" has huge production that recalls Hum and early Smashing Pumpkins. I dig it! But on some songs—"In On It" (the intro, at least) and "Youngest Daughter," for example—their hard rock sound creeps dangerously close to the 3 Doors Down/Our Lady Peace post-grunge nonsense. (And "Sheltered" is, like, at least 50% "In Bloom.")

Is it good? Is it bad? Is it possible that a band can be both on the same album?

Let's have a poll! And maybe discuss this question: What does it take to successfully pull off a ’90s sound in a post-grunge world without coming off like all those bands who just sounded like assholes trying to cash in on a trend? Can it be done?

[ Comment on this story ]

That Strange Phenomenon When Songs You’ve Not Heard for Years Pop Into Your Head for No Good Reason

While zooming downhill on Olive Way on my bike last night, the Clash’s “Somebody Got Murdered” popped into my head, apropos of nothing. I had not listened to this song (fourth track, side two of Sandinista!) in, oh, 30 years. Revisiting it now, the track sounds fairly innocuous, not at all the thing that flashes to mind when one thinks of the Clash. It’s just Mick Jones in lightweight-pop mode, helping to fill out a triple album, very pleasantly.

I don’t know what this phenomenon’s called—random memory reflux? Mental glitch jukebox syndrome?—but it’s pretty damned mysterious. Some songs will do this on a recurring basis, also seemingly spurred by nothing germane: The Fugs' "Frenzy" does this, usually when I'm shopping for sundries. (News you can use.)

Tearjerker: Beastie Boys' fallen member Adam "MCA" Yauch gets a Brooklyn park named after him, coinciding with the one year anniversary of his death after a long struggle with throat cancer.

Two of your favorite things in one place: Sigur Rós announces that they will appear on The Simpsons! Naturally, they'll also be covering the shows' theme song.

98 Degrees is releasing a new album?!: Hold onto your butts, everybody! The boy band that just won't quit (except for, you know, that decade) has recorded their first album in 13 years, appropriately titled 2.0. Here's a song about their dicks/microphones.

Rihanna vs. Brooklyn Nets vs. Chicago Bulls: To the dismay of no one, RiRi's concert at Brooklyn's Barclay Center scheduled for tomorrow night will have to be postponed in light of the NBA Playoffs being pushed into an unanticipated 7th game.

Black Flag has risen: Yesterday the group released their first new song in 27 years!

Hide yo' kids, hide yo' muzik producers!: AraabMUZIK's Abraham Orellana is recovering nicely from a gunshot wound after being caught in the crossfire of an attempted armed robbery earlier this week. Classic wrong place, wrong time scenario.

The sun's out! Enjoy this song! Mikal Cronin's new album MCII is out May 7th!

Holy shit. So Greg Ginn's Black Flag has a new record...well, a new song available for download off the new Black Flag album - Down in the Dirt.

SST Records is proud to announce a free download of the first new BLACK FLAG song in many years. On the upcoming 22 song LP to be released this summer, Down in the Dirt features Ron Reyes on vocals, Greg Ginn on guitar/theramin, My War bassist Dale Nixon on bass, and Gregory A Moore on drums. The band will begin touring in May in both Europe and the U.S. ***note: not to be confused with the 'fake' Flag band currently covering the songs of BLACK FLAG in an embarrassingly weak "mailing it in" fashion*** We urge you to check out the real BLACK FLAG when they hit your area.

Wow. Well, all right...I guess now all we hafta do is download the song. Right? Uh...I've been hesitating all last night and today, 'cause...like, as a general rule new jams by important old bands usually just suck; I'm afraid.

Meanwhile, Vice Magazine has interviewed the other former members of Black Flag currently active (ahem) the "embarrassingly weak 'mailing it in'" group Flag; read the interview here; it's good! And if you'd like to watch Flag "phoning it in" then see for yourself the LIVE Flag show is NOT AT ALL weak/mailed in!! Oof. I have feeling this Black Flag vs. Flag silliness is gonna get even more ridiculous.

Let's Talk About the Kelly Family

SO, I was at Central Cinema the other day to see Howard the Duck (woof, so much crazier than I remembered). The movie was running a little behind so they showed more amazing music videos than usual while technical problems got sorted out. The videos were mostly laughable '80s disco stuff, but then THIS SONG came on:

WHAT.

I went home and started to research how exactly something like this happened. Apparently, they were called the Kelly Family—an Irish, muti-generational family band who were way big in Europe and beyond in the '80s/'90s. They have sold more than 20 MILLION ALBUMS!

All that hair! Costumes! Vagabond lifestyle! Have you ever heard of them? They're like Hanson x1000.

That's really all I wanted to share with you. They have quite a few hits; you should look into it.

The Best of Ian Rubbish is a spot-on facsimile of '77-ish UK punk rock. Oh no!

He says:

Bass #1 is an antique french bass, circa 1860 made by Justin Maucotel or Jaque. It is 7/8th size (slightly larger than a standard 3/4 size), violin shaped with broad shoulders and violin corners, a few of which have broken off. It has "cheater dots" on the right side of the neck like an electric bass, and it has one tuning peg on the E string that is smaller and rounder than the other large and flat tuners on the A, D & G strings.

Bass #2 is a 5/8ths size student bass (slightly smaller than standard), viol shaped with narrow shoulders and no corners. It has a distinctive bright red varnish, and is fairly dinged up including a chunk of the scroll missing.

If you see these instruments in any local pawn or instrument shops, or know anything about where they might be, let Mr. Teske know! (You can e-mail me and we'll pass it on to him.)

And speaking of stolen gear, tonight there is a benefit show at the Tractor Tavern for local musician Kris Orlowski, who was robbed on tour. The line-up includes a bunch of local greats—Allen Stone, Meagan Grandall of Lemolo, Shelby Earl, Jacob James, Daniel Blu of Motopony, and John Roderick.

And to all these thieves: STOP TAKING STUFF THAT ISN'T YOURS.

[ Comment on this story ]

Today is Michael Brown's birthday! He was born Michael David Lookofsky in 1949, and was the keyboardist/songwriter for the very excellent baroque-pop '60s group the Left Banke. Now, you may know them from that ONE song ("Don't Walk Away Renee"), but they have other songs that are SO MUCH BETTER.

I meant to find you a reasonable video so you could hear one of my favorites, a prancey little number called "Evening Gown," and instead, found THIS VIDEO! Watch it because I need someone to explain it to me, but then play it again without watching so you can actually enjoy the song.

Yikes.

Last week Buzzfeed crunched some numbers and discovered that only about 16% of this year's Coachella performers were or featured a female. 16%? Ouch!

Yesterday a writer at Slate weighed in, theorizing that it isn't just a problem with Coachella—the lack of women on the bill mirrors many other big music festivals (including Lollaplaooza, Bonnaroo, and Sasquatch, which I calculated also has a pitiful 16%). That isn't just Coachella, Bonnaroo, et al.'s fault, though—it may also have to do with the musical genres they tend to focus on:

...the real problem at most of these festivals lies in the alternative subcultures they celebrate. Formed out of the male-dominated music scenes of jam music (in the case of Bonnaroo), late-’90s indie rock (Coachella), and early ’90s alternative and grunge (Lollapalooza), these festivals tend to celebrate diversity while dismissing the most popular pop acts—the ones who tend to dominate the charts and who tend so often to be female—as frivolous or corporate. As the festivals expand beyond their narrow roots, maybe fans and organizers should start to take the commercially and critically successful female acts they currently deride more seriously. Surely some of them are worth the kind of herculean effort—and often exorbitant cash—required to reunite groups like The Stone Roses (who headlined Coachella this year, in front of a disappointingly small audience).

You can read the whole essay here.

Out of curiosity, I took a look at this year's Capitol Hill Block Party. Turns out bands and musicians fronted (or co-fronted) by a female member take up over 30% of line-up (and almost 40% if you count the bands that have women, but not as a front person or co-frontperson)! Sure it could be better, but that's certainly not bad, especially in the grand scheme of male-dominated music festivals.

Good on ya, Block Party. Way to show the big boys (literally) how gender diversity is done.

"[T]here hasn't been an album playable throughout since Cat Stevens became Yusuf Islam." So says music-industry "expert" Bob Lefsetz in a recent newsletter. Note: Cat became Yusuf in 1978. In 35 years, Lefsetz claims, not one musician/band has created a full-length that has been "playable throughout." (I'll wait for you to stop laughing.)

Now, it's Lefsetz's shtick to make grand, sweeping generalizations and pronouncements that sound plausible, even profound... until you ponder them for more than five seconds. I'm not saying that Lefsetz is never right; he often makes cogent points. But he is off-base often enough to make me doubt his credibility. Lefsetz proves that if you're loud and confident enough, you can bamboozle a lot of gullible people—many of whom work for major labels—into thinking you know what you're talking about.

One of Lefsetz's pet theories—listeners don't care about albums, the album is an outmoded format, people just want great songs—may be true with some folks, but look beyond the casual music consumer or ADHD sufferers and you'll find millions of people who still listen to albums and find the art form fulfilling.

As for Lefsetz's bold statement in paragraph one, I would posit that hundreds, if not thousands, of albums since 1978 have been "playable throughout." Off the top of my head, I'd say these qualify: Wire's 154, Gang of Four's Entertainment!, Prince's Dirty Mind, Public Enemy's It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, the Feelies' Only Life, Sonic Youth's Sister, Chrome's Half Machine Lip Moves, De La Soul's 3 Feet High and Rising, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, Spiritualized's Pure Phase, and Burial's Burial. I could go on, but you're probably about to move your eyes somewhere else very quickly.

If you think Lefsetz is off his rocker, state your case with examples in comments.

Yes, this is all subjective speculation, but sometimes a revered pundit needs to be called out on what most people would deem an excrement-filled opinion.

Forget what I just said about Amanda Palmer. Her poetry inspired me to write a poem of my own, for Reese Witherspoon, during her difficult time.

A Poem for Reese

you don't know how it felt to be in the womb but it must have been at least a little warmer than the heated seats in your car

you don't know how intimately they're recording your every move on closed-circuit cameras until you see your face reflected back at you through the mug shot (you look angelic, by the way)

you don't know how to stop picking your nose

you don't know how the cop doesn't know your name

you don't know how to stay in the car

you don't know how things could change so incredibly fast

you don't know how to "Walk the Line" in the field sobriety test

you don't know how to call a cab but the instructions are on the internet

you don't know the way back to the hotel

Amanda Palmer doesn't impress me. She never has. And while I've never bought into her exhaustingly whimsical pro-artist nonsense that's actually really self-serving and obnoxious, I've also never felt the need to physically recoil at anything she's done. Until now. Until reading her "A Poem of Dzhokhar," where she writes:

you don’t know how many vietnamese soft rolls to order.

you don’t know how convinced your parents were that having children would be, absolutely, without question, the correct thing to do.

you don’t know how precious your iphone battery time was until you’re hiding in the bottom of the boat.

you don’t know how to get away from your fucking parents.

you don’t know how it’s possible to feel total compassion in one moment and total disconnection in the next moment.

you don’t know how things could change so incredibly fast.

you don’t know how to make something, but the instructions are on the internet.

You can read the whole thing here. But, be warned—if you don't like it (and many people don't) that's not Palmer's fault. That's your own inability to see what the poem is really about. And her response to that criticism is what makes it all the more awful:

now that everybody's panties are in a twist, i'd like to say: the poem is actually about more than you think it is. read it again.
— Amanda Palmer (@amandapalmer) April 21, 2013

Why is this poem so terrible? Besides the fact that is just really bad? Gawker sums it up pretty well (for once):

"A Poem for Dzhokhar" is not, really, "for" Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, the 19-year-old college kid who, along with his older brother, allegedly detonated a bomb at the Boston Marathon last week. It's for Palmer, a deluded and opportunistic narcissist who sells rhetorical snake oil to people too full of unearned self-regard to join an actual cult.

It's fake empathy. It's shallow and insulting and, it reads with an air of ego that insinuates that Amanda Palmer does know these things, or, at the very least she understands and empathizes with Dzhokhar for not knowing. But she doesn't. She knows shit about Dzhokhar and his parents and why he was born or why he did what he did and how he was feeling through even the most mundane points of his life. It's just gross.

Thank god for Maura Johnston, though, who calmed my anger when she started the "You Don't Know" Twitter trend last night, keeping me entertained for hours. Silver lining, I guess.

Here is the first I've seen of the now TWO Black Flag regroups. I gotta say Flag fucking owns this shit.

This Flag show was played to an invite-only crowd at Moose Lodge 1873 in Redondo Beach, California. BTW: Moose Lodge 1873 was where Black Flag played their first show in January, 1979. The Flag line up is Black Flag alumni Keith Morris, vox, Chuck Dukowski on bass, Dez Cadena playing guitar and singing, with Bill Stevenson on the drums; the second guitarist is Stephen Egerton from Descendents/All. Uh, I love the fuck outta Chavo, who is fronting the Greg Ginn Black Flag re-group, but after watching this vid I think I'd rather see Flag.

Secret Decoder Ring" title="C/O Ed. Secret Decoder Ring" width="200" height="205" />

Sean Jewell

C/O Ed. Secret Decoder Ring

Care Of Editions is a German record label with a refreshing take on some stale ideas. They’re purveryors of experimental music, a genre renowned for its DIY ethic, but this is the first label I’ve ever heard of that goes so far as to pay you to download their music. Here’s how that crazy idea works: downloads are limited in edition, and are paid for by the sales of the record they're attached to, meaning that people can only download and get paid if others are also purchasing. The only way to “unlock” paid downloads is for consumers to purchase vinyl copies. What’s better, the more vinyl that is purchased the more a download pays. It begins with a $1 reward and goes up to $45 dollars for the last lucky downloader, provided of course that the last, the 45th vinyl copy, has also sold. C/O will do this six times between 2012 and 2013, effectively devouring itself and breaking even in the process.

As much a work of performance art as it is a distributor of art, founder Gerhard Schultz has even gone so far as literally eliminating the label's website in proportion with record sales and downloads to emphasize the zeroing out of it all. Downloads are paid in real time, too, the label writes you a check as soon as you download, and the label will keep writing checks until all the vinyl is sold. In this way the record label will always zero its own debt out by meeting exact demand with exact supply.

Gerhardt is in Berlin, but was kind enough to allow me to take part in his label experiment from all the way over here in Seattle. He provided me with a download of two of the records—Ezra Buchla’s At The Door, and Scott Cazan’s Swallow— and mailed me a vinyl copy of of the artist known as #/TAU’s First Dew. Though I didn’t get paid to download, or pay for the vinyl, I wanted to go all the way through the process to see how it worked. I’m assuming I would have made at least a couple dollars, then helped to free up one more download by paying for a record. What I found immediately, aside from added confirmation for my love of experimental music, was that participation in the process was like having a philosopher for a record label.

C/O Editions first two releases are not European experimental artists but electroacoustic releases from couple of Los Angelinos. Ezra Buchla is a viola player who loops his own strings and synth sounds into a hurdy-gurdy like drone, and chants over them unintelligibly to spooky effect. Buchla has reportedly taken for inspiration a Jack Spicer poem, and a 16th century lycanthropy trial and conviction (damn werewolves, everywhere). His limited vinyl and download are officially out on the lables websiteApril 12th, but can be preordered (download or vinyl) now.

Scott Cazan is familiar with stringed instruments, but rather than play them in any conventional way, he attaches microphones to them, then drums on them, sometimes he’ll even hold microphone between his own teeth, then tap at tablets and laptops and soundboards as he captures the essence of the wood and flesh of his chosen materials. His record is three tracks of high pitched frequencies: feedback that sounds like steel cable about to snap under tension, wine glasses ringing, flutes holding notes at hypnotically long intervals, only interrupted by the static, beeping, and voice samples with the voyeuristic charm of a pocket call.

The vinyl I received intrigued me. It arrived at my door 4 days after leaving Berlin. Heavy, and sleeved in a cover that had a picture of American white tailed-bucks on the front and the C/O record insignia (A diagram of it’s structure, philosophy, and business model in a single talisman like emblem) on back. # / TAU is the pseudonym of German artist Boris Hegenbart who released First / Dew on CD in 1996, and has re-envisioned here in vinyl. Decidedly the musique concrète-ist of the bunch, he's composing with loops, endless chanting mantras, varying only in pitch and method of creation, but constant, dysrhythmic, and acousmatic. Under the chants I heard beeps, tambourines, and maracas, ther person with me on this experimental journey heard singing. When I moved around the room, the songs changed slightly because I received them differently. I felt like I was participating in the music.

Sean Jewell

Fist / Dew - Boris Hegenbart

It occurs to me that both the record label, and the musicians are shrugging the status quo. The label forgoes the accepted relationship between artist, label, and customer; and the musicians shrug off the idea of what music is expected to be. When accessed in this way, one gets the feeling of participating in –not just admiring— some work of post-modern art that it responds to imperialism (and perhaps even environmental concerns) by ignoring (neither rejecting or accepting) a capitalist model. By cutting clean at a preordained point C/O Editions are making less into more, never engaging in excess, and giving credit to the seemingly infinite —and heretofore worthless—download. In essence, C/O Editions begins as nothing, and achieves its full potential when it arrives back at the start. There will be no take over, no mass acceptance, there are no illusions of manifest destiny, no grand plan to get rich, just music, and it’s distribution framework which only ever goes in debt to –and selflessly places attention on—the process, and the artists themselves.

C/O Editions is selling records and putting itself out of business at the same time right now! Get over there!
