She Came This Way by Derek See

Okay, "She Came This Way" is not exactly a long JOURNEY...like, it ain't a concept piece about a neverending fairytale or stoking revolution, BUT it is a single side's journey through some sweet sunlit sike. It's a dosed sugar cube of Love, lysergic-era Beatles, the Buffalo Springfield, without irony and ZERO nods to the contemporary sike strains.

"She Came This Way" is one of Bay Area guitarsonist Derek See's solo jams. His main playing gig is producing, recording, and playing guitar with the Bang Girl Revue. If you ain't heard 'em, the Bang Girl Revue lay down some serious girl-group sounds. See also has an unfuckwithble record collection, which, thankfully, he proudly plays out, and he maintains a GENIUS blog, Derek's Daily 45. The man has taste and skill, AND he's also the Stooges' touring guitar tech!! Lord knows where he finds the time to record his killer solo action. GODDAMN! Oh, full disclosure: He's also a pal of mine.

Hey, everybody! Sorry I been gone—well, not really—but sorry I haven't been posting. No wifi in the tour van as promised made it impossible. Anyway, the last four weeks I spent with Shabazz, THEESat, and Malitia Malimob were incredible. I urge you to go straightaway to www.boilerroom.tv to watch a live set from the Black Constellation...like NOW (Stas and Cat start at 12:30pm PST). It will be something special.

French ethnodelic multi-instrumentalist High Wolf will be playing Electric Tea Garden Sept. 9. Let's hope he plays longer than the 30 minutes he did at Cairo in 2011—although it was a very good half hour.

In more immediate news, High Wolf will be releasing a new album, Kairos: Chronos, June 4 on Not Not Fun. The first track to be released to the public from it, "Kulti," further hones his unique spin on psychotropical dub for rainforest rituals. It instantly propels you out of your everyday mind into a far stranger and more intriguing state. Don't know about you, but that's a big reason why I listen to music in the first place. More on Kairos: Chronos later, but suffice it to say that the album's a major head trip that will get you floating in a most peculiar way.

Here's the info on High Wolf's Seattle appearance. (Disclosure: I will be DJing with Explorateur; the show is presented by our Distortions organization and No Sleep.)

If you find yourself at the Capitol Hill retailer Everyday Music tomorrow morning for the holy occasion known as Record Store Day (4/20/13), you will encounter on the turntables DJ El Toro (Stranger freelancer and KEXP personality Kurt B. Reighley, spinning at 10 am) and DJ Veins (Stranger writer… uh, me, spinning old and new records you probably haven't heard before at 11 am). One thing, though: The flier for the event erroneously lists my affiliation as KEXP. Note: I am not opposed to holding down a slot at KEXP, if KEXP wants me to fill in or anything. Just putting that out there.

Also on the bill at EM are several spiffy local bands, including Tomten, Scriptures, Mystery Ship, King Dude, Steradian, and Pitschouse. Plus: Wheedle's Groove/Family Affair member Robbie Hill, in person and radiating charisma.

More RSD info here. Gird your wallets.

Kinski guitarist/vocalist Chris Martin generously asked me to guest on his excellent, long-running radio show on KBCS, Ampbuzz. Martin describes the show as "An integrated mix of psychedelic rock, outsider folk, free and not-so-free jazz, and anything else that can be considered 'out' but not necessarily 'noise.'"

Last night I spun some strange old and new tracks by musicians hailing from a lot of different places—from Igor Wakhévitch to Jan Jelinek—and answered in a serious monotone voice some questions that Chris asked me. There's a chance you may hear some tracks you like. I tried not to air anything that's been overexposed. The program's archived for two weeks on kbcs.fm; you can listen here if you have a spare two hours.

Kinski's album-release party for Cosy Moments (Kill Rock Stars) happens April 5 at the Sunset.

It includes an interview that I conducted with the former Sun City Girls bassist about Sublime Frequencies’ working methods and goals and the origin of his Uncle Jim alter ego. The mix includes highlights from SF's worldly and wildly diverse roster, Bishop’s solo recordings as Alvarius B., and a smattering of classics culled from Sun City Girls’ vast and twisted catalog. It serves as an illuminating introduction to Bishop and SF's aesthetics. You can listen to the podcast and read the interview here.

Here's some video I shot of Hobosexual and a female stagecrasher last Saturday night at the Blue Moon. Frontman Ben Harwood handles the incident well, as if this is the sort of thing that happens to him at every show. From the woman's gyrations to her impromptu guitar lesson on through to the catastrophic finale, it's like a mini-Greek tragedy but with a better soundtrack.

Who Wants To Make This The Best Christmas Eve Ever?

So I book the shows at the Blue Moon. Most of you know this. You also probably know that this year we will be having our 9th Annual Blue Moon Christmas Pageant & Midnight Mass. The tradition started as a lark on Christmas Eve 2004 when I noticed the complete lack of Seattle dive bars holding church services. The first edition consisted of a band playing slightly off-key Christmas music followed by the Reverend Darnell Jenkins leading a service. About three people were there.

The second year was equally uneventful but when the third one rolled around, people started showing up. I don't know why. Maybe it was the addition of better talent. Over the years we have had more and more people show up to check out whatever may be on the bill, like tap dancers, comedians, Peter Cetera cover bands, rapping prostitutes, a striptease, the high-fructose holiday cheer of The Donner Vixens and an annual faceoff between Jesus and Satan.

But it was all prelude to the Reverend Darnell Jenkins, the mysterious minister whose brand of brimstone is not to be trifled with. I mean, a few years ago, this is what the Reverend and our pool table looked like when it was all over:

Anyways! The reason I'm here is because one of the bands had to cancel due to a personal matter and our puppet master just found out he has to be out of town on this important day. It's a bit short notice for us so I turn to you, the LineOut faithful to see if there is anyone out there who would like to be a part of the pageant. You don't have to be a musician. You could do anything talentwise as far as I'm concerned. You could do a soft shoe routine, juggle machetes, be a clown bleeding out of three orifices... the only limit is your imagination. (That and the law. I will not book your donkey show.) Anyhow, if you're interested in spending your Christmas eve helping a bunch of no-goodniks launching an assault on tradition, drop me a line: bluemoonseattle@gmail.com.

Enjoy and download it now—thankfully free of my rambling, probably over-effusive interview bit (what can I say? I fuckin' love this guy). Since AlienBootyBass is not on sale quite yet, it's also the first time most of you will be able to get any of those joints in your iTunes—if this man's music is your thing, that is. In just a couple days, he'll be heading to Europe to do some dates through Germany and Switzerland with Shabazz Palaces and THEESatisfaction (plus cold-ass Erik Blood). Joining me on this Decibel Festival-sanctioned panel will be Darek Mazzone (KEXP), Shawn Reynaldo (XLR8R), Alain Mongeau (MUTEK), Andrew Ryce (Resident Advisor), and Rachel Gibbs (music curator for Victoria's Secret).
It is always nice to hear any song that can make me feel like I'm floating; this duo, Ronnie & Robyn, do just that with some perfectly perfect blue eyed soul.

<iframe width="320" height=215" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/saYnm15I5Gs" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>

This track smacks of being a teener with supper club pretension, but the arrangement is packed HEAVY with sophistication! Uh, is that some harp? YUP! Um...AND a bit of twelve string guitar?! CHECK!! The production is JUST raw and overdriven enough it RIPS when turned up LOUD! I first heard "As Long As You Love Me (I'll Stay)" this weekend, played LOUD, at Emerald City Soul Club's monthly dance night at the Lo-fi, it's PERFECT at proper dance club volume. The flip is great too, "Step Into My Heart." When the killin' is gettin' kilt it is impossible to beat a duo...a Detroit duo, no less.

An instrumental version, "Sidra Theme," which feels VERY different than the vocal version, is currently getting HUGE play at rare soul clubs. The instrumental version was issued, by catalog number prior to the vocal version, BTW, but if you ask me I like the vocal version best.

(Full disclosure: my boss at the Stranger is in Tacocat. I'm also married to a member of Tacocat and have created art for their fliers and records. I also work part time at the label that puts out their records. I'll do my best to keep this post fair and accurate. Lisa Bonet was not in attendance, topical palindromes are hard!)

TIMOTHY RYSDYKE

I was running late for my first ever trip to Bumbershoot yesterday. It was my foray into traveling by public transportation (I'm all growed up now, mama!) and I had no idea where to get off. I arrived at the Bumber-gates 15 minutes into Tacocat's scheduled set time, and it was like walking into a wonderland. From a distance, I could see plumes of bubbles and the familiar sounds of songs that I've heard so many times. When the crowd finally came into view, I was pleasantly surprised. A huge group of people were merrily bobbing in unison to Tacocat's brand of sophisticated(ish) pop party punk. Behind the band was a gigantic digital screen of themselves, only three stories taller. When the first song that I caught ended, a giant version of their name appeared on the screen in a hideous font, with a kerning error on the last letter.

I've never been to a Tacocat show that has lasted longer than 30 minutes, so I wasn't sure how they were going to fill the required hour. It seemed like a simple solution for them though, they simply played every song they'd ever written and tacked on covers by the Misfits and the Primitives. The between song banter wasn't excessive, there was a reference to Q13 Fox Morning News saying Tacocat has a song about a volcano. That song is about a top of the line weed vaporizer! When they played "UTI" from their first LP Shame Spiral, a group of teen girls in front of me all looked at each other looked at each other with their mouths open. They might not had heard of Tacocat before, but now they were instant fans. I smelled the stench of burning marijuana and noticed three young dudes smoking a blunt. A tall man with blonde hair repeatedly threw a baby safely into the air and caught it.

Tacocat was fortunate to have the noon time slot. Crowds of people were entering the festival near the Sub Pop stage and Tacocat was the first thing they'd see all day. I stood next to an older couple happily sharing an elephant ear while shoulder swaying. Eventually the hour was up and the crowd roared. Tacocat was triumphant.

I spotted some teens making trying to decide what they were going to do next and decided to get the youth opinion on what had just happened.

Um, what's your name?

Chi.

What's your name?

Tanner?

Are you both teenagers?

Uh-huh. Yes.

DEREK ERDMAN

What did you think of Tacocat?

Chi: Loved it.

Tanner: Yeah, I really loved it.

How about the way they looked?

Chi: Fucking awesome.

Tanner: I love the bassist's tattoo because it was a Bikini Kill tattoo and I love Riot Grrrl.

Who is your favorite member of Tacocat?

Chi: Probably Bree.

Tanner: It's hard to pick favorites, I like all of them?

And what was for breakfast?

Chi: No breakfast.

Tanner: Sourdough biscuits!

And with that, everybody was gone. Gone to lay in the sun and eat a corn dog. Gone to watch a guy juggle knives. Gone to hear a kid in a Slayer shirt shred to raise money for music school. Gone to pay some money to punch a guy in the stomach.
Don't Talk to the Cops' high-energy, party-maximizing hiphop tore up the Toyota Free Yr Radio tent thingy this evening. No surprise there. But what I really want to talk about is, El Mizell (aka The Stranger's hiphop columnist and blogger extraordinaire) busted some of the most animated moves for a big man since Minutemen's D. Boon stalked stages in the mid '80s.

Dave Segal/The Stranger

Don't Talk to the Cops: Quite a moving experience.

My pitiful cell-phone camera couldn't properly capture Mizell in all of his kinetic fury, so you'll have to catch him in action at the next DTTTC show for actual proof.

[This post has been amended since its original publication.]

After nearly three years in business, Capitol Hill bar the Living Room is closing its doors Aug. 31. However, there will be one last party tonight featuring several of the DJs who had nights at the establishment. (Disclosure: I DJed the Prog! bimonthly there, along with three other residents: Explorateur, Narvan, and Gel-Sol. Prog!—led by Andy Reichel, aka Gel-Sol, looks like it will relocate to Hazlewood in Ballard.)

According to capitolseattle.com, "There is no word on when the space will re-open with new ownership, a new name and a new way of doing things. We're told an East Williamsburg bar owner with some Seattle roots is coming back to town and will take over the space."

Well, it was fun while it lasted. The Living Room offered an intimate, welcoming atmosphere that totally lived up to its name, and owner Clay Roach, manager Joan Trower, and talent booker Josh Roberts displayed open minds toward adventurous music programming—a trait that's rare in Seattle... or any city, for that matter. At Prog!, we typically spun some of the most warped, out-there tunes ever recorded and never once were we censored.

Other nights like Portable Shrines' psych-rock monthly, Voltage Control's excursion into pre-1983 electronic music, Ill Cosby's Street Halo's exploration of future-bass productions, and the leftfield techno of Eric Moon and Laura Lamb's V.206 also unveiled lots of uncompromising sounds. There are many other examples, but it's getting late. Do know that the diversity of the Living Room's DJ nights and the unimpeachable aesthetics of their selectors made the Olive Way spot one of the most consistently rewarding places to frequent for serious music heads. It will be missed.

I don’t understand anyone’s reservations about anything. We’re all basically riding bombs out of a plane, waving cowboy hats around in a way that would suggest social conservatism under other circumstances. Because we are only riding bombs in a figurative sense, we have nothing but our reservations to stop us from abandoning all of our clothes on the floor of a photo booth—except for the hat, of course, which can’t be abandoned because it’s figurative.

Tonight at the Rat & Raven, five bands and two DJs will be paying tribute to the glories of krautrock, a multifaceted species of Nazi-obliterating (in theory) experimental music from the late '60s and '70s that subtly rearranged the DNA of Anglo-American rock into bold new flavors that are still influencing bands right this minute.

The concept for this show is to have some of the city's Brainiest local rock groups cover songs by the legends of krautrock while folks consume sauerkraut and speak in stilted German accents.
Do you wanna see my absolute favorite photo from the Capitol Hill Block Party? It's not even a music photo. It's a photo of someone I have never met—a fellow named Dixon Hamby. It's my favorite because it proves something I've said for years: For better or worse, COPS ARE PEOPLE TOO.

>>>> LOOK! <<<<<

I kept thinking that the police officers who stopped to look at Derek Erdman's piece were angry with the imagery. But not all of them were—definitely not. I saw several officers laughing and taking snaps of their own. People should interact with art. And they did—especially with this one that was simply titled "You Are Under Arrest".

Grynch - The Lab Collabs Vol. 1

a free 25-song collection of features I did on other artists' songs between 2007 and 2011. It includes appearances by J.Pinder, Macklemore, D.Black, P Smoov, Rik Rude, Kublakai, Ripynt, Grieves, Krukid, Wizdom & Epidemmik, Sol, Luck-One, DJ Nphared, Prometheus Brown, Thig Nat, State Of The Artist, Xperience, Brothers From Another, Jack Walsh, J.Bre, Juga Hill, Slouch, B.Brown, SK, Second Family, Knuckles, Gatsby, Blue Scholars, Nam, Esseno, Neema, Kyle Lucas & Captain Midnite, Murder Dice, Dice, Eighty4 Fly, Rockwell Powers & Ill Pill, RA Scion and Sta Hi Brothas (Vitamin D & Maine).

God (not one of Grynch's heathen Nordic gods, mind you) knows I've given the dude a rasher of shit for working with a bunch of bum-ass Seattle rappers in the past (he's from the north end after all, he can't escape his destiny), but I can only get so much mileage with that one when I'm one of them (see #18). You've won this round, Grynch. Wait, isn't Macklemore on that song? We're rich, biotch!

June 15-17, there is a party where you can:

- Sing "Happy Birthday" and sign a giant birthday card for ET.
- Watch the 3,500 pound walrus devour a massive fish birthday cake.
- If there are any kids at this party, they better get out of my fucking way, because I fucking love walruses way more than them, and I don’t want them fucking up my ET Birthday experience.

See, I have wanted to hug a walrus for as long as I can remember. Not a small hug, like a seven-minute hug. I don’t know what it is. The want and hope has swelled in recent years, I’ll be honest. I think if I could just do it, and have my seven to nine minute prolonged embrace with the animal, and get it over with, I’d be able to see a walrus, or a picture of a walrus, or a video of walrus, and not feel the urge to forget the outer worlds of stress, and traffic, and money, and unjustness, and release myself into the whiskers and blubber of the animal’s unconditional nurturing mattress of acceptance.

Apparently though, walruses are not the hugging type of animal. Apparently, they impale people with their tusks. Apparently my dream is never going to happen. Someone from Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground informs me that: Apparently it’s an appalling site and very difficult to remove an impaled hunter from a walrus.

Thanks for crushing my dream. Thanks for nothing!! Fuck it. I’m going to be at Point Defiance for ET and his birthday anyway. I'm fucking singing it "Happy Birthday." And if I get a chance, and no little kids get in my fucking way, I'm hopping the barrier and hugging it.

And because it’s now National Walrus Day, one must view the 1967 Beatles' "I Am the Walrus."

SongFacts states:

John Lennon wrote this song. As stated in the DVD Composing the Beatles Songbook, John was throwing together nonsense lyrics to mess with the heads of scholars trying to dissect The Beatles songs. They also mention that it's John's answer to Bob Dylan's "getting away with murder" style of songwriting. Lennon told Playboy years later that "I can write that crap too," which is rarely mentioned in relation to this song.

Lennon explained the origins of this song in his 1980 Playboy interview: "The first line was written on one acid trip one weekend. The second line was written on the next acid trip the next weekend, and it was filled in after I met Yoko. Part of it was putting down Hare Krishna. All these people were going on about Hare Krishna, Allen Ginsberg in particular. The reference to 'Element'ry penguin' is the elementary, naive attitude of going around chanting, 'Hare Krishna,' or putting all your faith in any one idol. I was writing obscurely, a la Dylan, in those days."

Lennon got the idea for the oblique lyrics when he received a letter from a student who explained that his English teacher was having the class analyze Beatles songs. Lennon answered the letter; his reply was sold as memorabilia at a 1992 auction. (thanks, Emery - San Jose, CA)

The voices at the end of the song came from a BBC broadcast of the Shakespeare play King Lear, which John Lennon heard when he turned on the radio while they were working on the song. He decided to mix bits of the broadcast into the song, resulting in some radio static and disjointed bits of dialogue.

The section of King Lear used came from Act Four, Scene 6, with Oswald saying: "Slave, thou hast slain me. Villain, take my purse," which comes in at the 3:52 mark. After Oswald dies, we hear this dialogue:
Edgar: "I know thee well: a serviceable villain, As duteous to the vices of thy mistress As badness would desire."
Gloucester: "What, is he dead?"
Edgar: "Sit you down, father. Rest you."

The idea for the Walrus came from the poem The Walrus and The Carpenter, which is from the sequel to Alice in Wonderland called Through the Looking-Glass. In his 1980 Playboy interview, Lennon said: "It never dawned on me that Lewis Carroll was commenting on the capitalist and social system. I never went into that bit about what he really meant, like people are doing with the Beatles' work. Later, I went back and looked at it and realized that the walrus was the bad guy in the story and the carpenter was the good guy. I thought, Oh, s—t, I picked the wrong guy. I should have said, 'I am the carpenter.' But that wouldn't have been the same, would it?"

Do you care about electronic music… and the future? Then you may want to head to Intiman Playhouse Mon. June 11 for Fin Records and Next 50’s The Oscillating Human: Electronic Music as an Innovating Force in the Future, an event dedicated to analyzing and demonstrating what it says on the tin—right now, in real time!

Doors open at 6 pm with a panel discussion happening at 7 pm and featuring Steve Fisk (godhead producer/musician with Pell Mell, Pigeonhed, etc.), William Brown (aka DJ Not So Good), Aaron Meola (Dropping Gems label boss), and the blogger/writer you hate to love, Dave Segal. Expect scintillating and infuriating dialogue and debate about the state of electronic music and where it may go and whom it might dazzle... and perhaps some awkward silences. Then at 8:30 pm, there'll be live sets by DJAO, Ghost Feet, David Hahn, and Brooklyn-based Long Distance Poison, who will have their performance transmitted through shortwave radio.

Oscillating Human is free, all ages, and, most important for many, there will be a bar. If you can’t make it to Intiman, you can tune in here.
TacocaT Van Benefit Thursday Night @ Chop Suey

Seattle's beloved TacocaT had a van debacle during their last tour and there's a plan to raise funds to replace it tomorrow night at Chop Suey. TacocaT will be playing along with Summer Lovers, Boat Party and Chastity Belt. The van that the band bought in haste to get them home from the rest of the tour will also be for sale at the event. I spoke to TacocaT drummer, Lelah Maupin, about the event specifics and what their idea touring van would be.

derek erdman

What happened to your van?
The wonderful, beautiful Honda Odyssey? It was destroyed by Firestone.

What did they do?
They gave us an oil change and a day later we had no oil in our engine and it exploded as we were ascending into a blizzard.

And your mother tried to sue them?
My mom and my step-daddy tried to sue Firestone, but they didn't get very far.

derek erdman

What did you guys do to get home?
We scraped together all of our money in the world to buy our rebound angel, as we call it. It got us home safely.

What can a person expect at the benefit show tomorrow night?
Well, they can expect fun, themes, prizes, parties...hold on, I'm getting another call. (I'm put on hold for three minutes) Are you there? I'm back.

In your opinion, what would be the ideal TacocaT touring van?
Ideally, we would have a brand new Honda Odyssey.

What amenities would be included?
We'd like an iPod jack so we don't have to use tape adapters because those break a lot. Plus enough room for all of our bags and equipment in the back. Maybe another seat so we can comfortably carry a friend or boyfriend or a husband or a roadie or anybody who wanted to come with us. Good gas mileage is essential. The new van doesn't have that.

That's not too much to ask.
Air conditioned and heated seats, but I guess we don't really need that. We were robbed of our van. I feel funny having a benefit show because other people need help, but we need help. A van is important!

[ Comment on this story ]

May 19 at Vermillion Gallery and Bar. It's open to the public from 3 pm to 8 pm with a $3 entry fee (early entry from 1 pm-3 pm costs $10—and you have to contend with Mike Nipper's elbows). More than 20 dealers from Seattle, Spokane, Portland, and even Detroit will be selling LPs and 45s of many different styles, offering a plethora of gems. The Big Dig always leaves my wallet depleted and my shoulders sore. To soundtrack your digging experience, several DJs—including selectors from the Dug crew, Brian Hill, Explorateur, and yours unruly—will be spinning crucial cuts that you probably won't be able to Shazam (including the Rufus Harley jam after the cut).

As you may have heard, April 21 is Record Store Day, which is a holy occasion in my household. Newly relocated (again!) Capitol Hill retailer Everyday Music has a full day/night’s slate of entertainment to heighten your RSD experience. (Disclosure: I’m DJing the 4 pm-5 pm slot. I promise to turn you on… to fab new and old jams.) Check out the lineup below, which includes Stranger freelancer Kurt B. Reighley (aka DJ El Toro) and a grip of worthy Seattle musical acts. On top of all this, EM will be discounting new music 10 percent and used goods 20 percent.

Jonathan James Carr's latest work in progress, "Stereo Music for Tuned Dolphinizer," deviates slightly from his last album with Brain Fruit, 1.1 (Debacle Records). This piece surges into more jagged dynamics, urgent tempos, and strident tonalities than anything on that excellent, kosmische full-length. "Dolphinizer" progressively intensifies over its 10+ minutes, inducing a thrillingly mad, disorienting effect. What a swarmer.

Brain Fruit perform as part of the group Particle Being Ensemble with four Rose Windows' members and Master Musicians of Bukkake's Randall Dunn on sax at the Comet Fri.

KEXP DJ Greg Vandy is holding his annual Spring Soul Jamboree Invitational Wed. April 4 on 90.3 FM and at kexp.org (6 pm-9 pm). Every year, the host of The Roadhouse asks five DJs to spin their all-time top 5 soul songs and to briefly discuss them. This year, Vandy’s invited Triple Door talent buyer Scott Giampino (aka Self-Administered Beatdown, former impresario of the Soul Hole monthly), Garrett Lunceford (Sophisticated Mama), Marc Muller (Emerald City Soul Club), Christian Science (DUG), and, uh, me. (Greg probably wanted a dilettante to add some “quirky” surprises to the mix.)

The guidelines: all songs must be from 1965 to 1975 and under four minutes. The latter restriction is kind of a bummer, because it eliminates potential selections like Funkadelic’s “What Is Soul” and Dr. John’s “Gris-Gris Gumbo Ya Ya.” Nevertheless, there are plenty of immortal gems to be found that run under 240 seconds, and I hope to dig through my stash and do the show justice. Those other guys are guaranteed to bring the heat, as many possess 45s that individually cost more than your monthly rent payment. Tune in, turn on, drop trou.

Seattle-based reissue label Medical Records is holding a listening party for its latest release, Axxess’ Novels for the Moons*, at Wall of Sound (315 E Pine St in Capitol Hill) tonight from 7 pm-9 pm.

This bizarre 1983 synthesizer album was the product of Patrick Mimran, a French multimedia artist who co-ran Lamborghini Motors with his brother in the ’80s. Alternately sinister and whimsical, Novels for the Moons is one of the most distinctive releases in Medical’s high-quality catalog. Mimran—a rare combination of savvy businessman and maverick artist—told me in an interview, “Lamborghini cars were and still are a perfect blend of art and technology, as good electronic music was and still is.” You can find out for yourself at Wall of Sound tonight.

*I wrote liner notes for this album.

Alan Bishop—ex-Sun City Girls, Alvarius B., co-founder of the Sublime Frequencies label—is returning to play music for Prog! The last time he graced us with his loaded laptop in November 2011, he dropped so many cuts of exquisite quality and utmost rarity, there is still jaw residue on the Living Room’s hardwood floor. A ravenous collector and curator for one of the planet’s most interesting global-music labels, Bishop has access to tons of fantastic music that practically nobody else on Earth has even heard. When he’s done with his set, you’ll realize you still have a lot to learn about music and will leave with a headful of new names to explore further.

Residents Explorateur, Gel-Sol, and Veins also will spin. Bishop will likely start his set shortly after 9 pm. (The Living Room, 9 pm-2 am, free, 21+.)

Well, Kenneth finally got up the headlining set from Cold Lake. See both videos, including their version of Bodycount's "Cop Killer" co-sung by El Mizell (although there's lots of blackness and not much to see, so you may as well just listen) after the cut:
