Originally published at 10:30 pm last night, but moved up because LOOK! The Breeders! Superchunk! The Zombies! OH MY!

K.C. Fennessy

Only Norwood can pull off a baby blue velveteen baseball cap

I knew I wouldn't be able to catch Fishbone at Bumbershoot—or anybody, for that matter—so I was pleased when I noticed that "the band" would be appearing at the Northwest Film Forum for a Q&A after a one-time screening of the fine and forthcoming documentary Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone (I also knew that the guests would be founding members Norwood Fisher and Angelo Moore; the full and ever-changing line-up seemed a pretty unlikely prospect).

The film is available on DVD—you can also stream it via Netflix and iTunes—and it's played Seattle at least twice, so I wasn't sure what kind of crowd would show up at 2pm on Labor Day, but I gotta say: it was a good one. Not just because the house was full, but because attendees came armed with plenty of questions.

More pictures and notes below. Plus, a very SPECIAL guest!

K.C. Fennessy

That's a water bottle; Norwood confirmed that he's done with the drink

Although it would've been nice to see and hear the inimitable Mr. Moore, the bass player arrived alone, but this development wasn't as disappointing as it sounds, not when the Q&A proceeded to last for about an hour and a quarter, making it one of the longer ones I've ever experienced, and I've attended hundreds over the years. (Heartwarming aside: before he entered the theater, I heard Norwood take a call on his cellphone. "Hi Mom..." he began. It was Mama Fish! Live! On the line!)

K.C. Fennessy

Also on the agenda: a cookbook (unless he was joking)

Since I've seen the film three times now, I didn't have any questions—the DVD includes two commentary tracks—but it was interesting to hear what other people had to say. Although fans love to compare Fishbone to the Red Hot Chili Peppers, the exercise appears to hold considerably less appeal to the involved parties. After all: the bands emerged from the same So-Cal scene (Norwood described them as "a little older," since he was underage when Fishbone began).

The funk aficionados hung out together, supported each other, and appeared on a lot of the same bills. If anyone is expecting Norwood or Angelo to say, "I don't like those guys anymore" or "We deserve to be just as popular," they'll be waiting a long time. Fisher, in particular, emanates genuine positivity. If the documentary makes his precarious financial situation abundantly clear, I got the impression that he's more concerned about creating a viable future for himself rather than wasting tears over the mistakes, missed opportunities, and misfortunes of the past.

Thankfully, no one actually broached the subject, but one fellow did ask, "Is it true you taught Flea how to play the bass?" (Or he might have asked, "Is it true you taught Flea how to play the slap bass?") The answer turned out to be more complicated than a simple yes or no. Norwood says he was in a music shop one day, and he saw an Asian guy playing slap bass (he thinks the man may have been Korean). Inspired, he copied the technique. Flea was intrigued, and asked if Norwood could give him some pointers, and so he did. I love it that they were taking their cues from some random guy in a retail outlet, rather than a heavyweight like Larry Graham (with whom, I'm sure, they're well acquainted).

K.C. Fennessy

Norwood had a lot of praise for the Two Tone sound Lynval helped to construct

So, props to the NWFF and props to Norwood for the generosity of his time. Towards the end of the Q&A, I was tempted to ask if he was still in touch with Blowfly, but decided it might be best not to broach the subject. Norwood appears in The Weird World of Blowfly, since he played bass for the dirty-rap legend, but it's such a disheartening profile I was afraid it might put a damper on an otherwise upbeat afternoon. Plus, I don't know if Norwood is a fan (he probably) is or whether it was just another paying gig (that was probably part of the equation).

In any case, a gentleman with a lovely Anglo-Jamaican accent spoke up at a certain point, and mentioned that he was a member of—the Specials. Hot damn! Only one of Fishbone's primary influences. They proceeded to talk about their overwhelmingly white audiences (Norwood says he's been seeing more diversity in recent years; one of the benefits of sticking it out longer than most of your peers). Lynval also said he couldn't imagine a better live act than Fishbone. Norwood demurred, but the look on his face said it all; there's nothing like high praise from a personal hero. After the Q&A, I snapped a picture of Golding asking Fisher where Fishbone would be playing that night: he didn't want to miss it.

Keith Johnson

I Wanna Be Your Superfuzz Bigmuff

For the first half of Mudhoney's set on Sunday evening, Mark Arm looked kinda stoic. He stood directly behind the mic stand and grunged-out with a straight face. Then something happened: the mic came off the stand, and Arm started making all sorts of weird faces. He staggered around vertigo-style and then whispered into the mic, kneeling into the stage as if he were about to conduct some sort of ritualistic sacrifice. Then he sprung up, and I was almost expecting him to conjure some broken glass then roll in it as he violently traipsed the stage.

This (and the photographer I abducted photos from, thanks Keith!) got me thinking of Mr. Pop. By day, he is good ol' polite, reserved Jim Osterberg, the kind of man you'd be happy to bring home to your mother. By night, he is Iggy Pop Godfather of Punk, the kind of animal you hide in the closet from your mother after fucking with whips and chains all night. As you may have caught in Dave Segal's preview, by day Mark Arm is Sub Pop's warehouse manager. He (and the rest of the band) had fancy, electric-colored Starbucks drinks onstage and some are married, some with children. But Arm can really bust out his Iggy.

Mudhoney cranked through a set of mostly crowd-favorites, with the highlight for me being "In 'N' Out of Grace" from perhaps their most well-known non-single, the Superfuzz Bigmuff EP. The song crashed into a psych-grunge fury of brutal fuzz, and there wasn't a still crowd member in sight. I was also impressed by Mudhoney's apparently multi-generational appeal, as there were as many (maybe more?!) teens as grunge dads in the crowd. And the teens and dads were rocking out equally, too. A dad to my left— sporting athletic shoes, khaki pants, and a baseball cap— got downright riotous, fist-pumping in ecstatic trance as I have seen few fist pump before.

Crowd-surfing/mosh report: It started off slow but peaked during "Touch Me I'm Sick", which I caught 14-year-old skateboarder boys screaming along to. The crowd never gets toooo wild, but at least I don't get kicked in the face! +++

Band fashion report: In proper Northwestern form, Mudhoney LUUUUV the earth tones and subdued hues. Plus, Steve Turner's hair matches his pants!!

Etc report: three adorable blond children backstage sang along to most of the set, including "Touch Me I'm Sick," which was kinda disturbing but still pretty punk. They were not Mark Arm's children (he "doesn't have any"), although they all looked JUST LIKE HIM (ahem, love children?!).

What it was like. What it meant. Who it was. Why it existed. I explained to two different adults on two different days at Bumbershoot, that Skrillex was a boy and not a girl. That is the only thing I knew with 97% certainty (which doesn't matter in the least, except for it seemed that people were more supportive of a girl being Skrillex than they were when they found out it was a boy being Skrillex). Other than that, I really didn't know what say. Kids started lining up at 5:30pm for Skrillex's 9:30pm performance. I asked them if that was really what they were in line for, and a rotten little tween said, "NO, were in line for Miley Cirus." The sarcasm was lost on me. I would wait in a line to see Miley. Maybe. For like, 20 minutes tops. But still.

Forlorn Canadians in the beer garden asked me for advice on sneaking into the front for Skrillex. I told them to be polite to security and door people, since it seemed like that alone might startle someone into allowing them to cut in line. I had yet to see a teen being polite.

When it was time, I dragged myself into Key Arena to see the action. And what was the action you ask?

EEEK EK EK EK SHRK SRKWWwwwwww whom whom whom whommmooouuuuwww eh eh eh eh skkkkkkkROMWEM MEH WUH WUH WUH WUHHHHH.....................................jvrrrrrrrWEHWEHWEHWEHWEHWE HWEHWWWWAAAA AAAHHHHHHHHHMPRRRRRUHUHUHUHUH.......DUN bum bummm bwaaaooooo ooowwwwwwwwwwwwwwba ba baba ba ba ba ba ba ba bababababababBAPPP WUM WUM WUM WUM WUMMMMMMMMbbbbb BU BU BU BU BU WUM BU WUM BU WUM BU BUBUuuuuuuzzzzzzssssskkkkkkkreeeeeeeeeee.......schjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjrrrrrrroooooom mmmmmmM WUB WUB WUBWUBWUBWUBUBWUBWUB x x x x x x x x x ...................................................WHOOOOMMPP
zizzzaza zizzzaza zizzzazazaza zizzzazazizzzazazzazazaaaa zazazazazazzzzzzziiiiiiizzzzzzzaazaZIZIZIZIZIZIZ

Complete with laser lights, smoke, seizurey video sampling, and ALL THOSE TEENS! It was actually quite the spectacle. I took a video, which caused my phone to die. Then I panicked! I didn't know where my friends were! Where my date was! What if I couldn't get home and I was trapped in the Skrillex vortex forever without a phone or a sweater! None of these rude teens were going to help me! I am actually still at Key Arena, writing this blog post from underneath a chair.

And I still don't know what to tell you. It seems to me, Skrillex is just a DJ with interesting hair (that he can never, ever change) who takes other peoples' songs and scrambles them with insect noises and whatever noise the skin condition eczema would make, if eczema were an insect. I mean person. I mean computer. SKREEEEEEEEEEE!

Dear Ladies of Bumbershoot: I couldn't believe how many of you were doing this. I'm not trying to be preachy, but I started doing it when I was 13 years old, and it has been a roller coaster of quitting and starting (and quitting) ever since. It's easy to roll your eyes at the lung cancer warnings, but I wish someone would have told me about the wrinkles, painful teeth whitening, and cellulite. You should stop while you still can! Stop now! LOVE, Kelly O

Kelly O

Not Neil Diamond!

Ever since a nightmarishly disappointing Bob Dylan show I attended when I was 17, I’ve been afraid to see legendary musicians in concert. It takes time to become legendary, and too frequently musicians succumb to what my mom refers to as “Neil Diamond syndrome,” that is, sucking increasingly as time goes on. While Sex With An X, the Vaselines latest album, is fantastic, my Bob Dylan PTSD made me wary of seeing them live.

I shouldn’t have worried. After a slightly fuzzy-sounding performance of “Monster Pussy,” (resulting from too-low mic volumes) the Vaselines show was everything I hoped it would be. Nothing that detracted from the show, such as the giant, tacky video screen on the Sub Pop stage, could stop the Vaselines from keeping the entire audience euphoric until the sun set and the stars came out. They were a delight to watch because they were clearly so delighted to play. Frequently Frances Mckee grinned with what looked like the purest contentment when songs began.

Kelly O

Purest contentment.

After they played “Molly’s Lips,” a man in the audience yelled “Kiss my lips!” to which Mckee replied, “Oh, you’ve got a boner. That’s my kind of guy! Well, I think—I can’t see you.” The next song was dedicated to “The guy with the boner.” The show was peppered with such funny banter. When Eugene Kelly complained that the set list was the only thing he had ever gotten to choose, McKee said, “I always let you wear my high heels, and my frilly knickers.”

Nirvana’s Krist Novoselic made a surprise appearance to play accordion on “Jesus Wants Me For a Sunbeam,” eliciting cheers. Clouds of pot smoke filled the air. Many cell phone pictures were taken. Someone told me later they had also smelled crack, but that may have been the smell of collective excitement and a summer ending properly.

The Vaselines played their excellent cover of Divine’s “You Think You’re a Man” as an encore, and it occurred to me that John Waters was probably still in town and quite possibly in the audience somewhere. I hope he was, and that he had as much fun at that show as I did.

Brittnie Fuller gives us her account of the desperate dancing incidents during M83's Key Arena show yesterday at Bumbershoot:

About halfway into M83's set Sunday afternoon, wild teens start leaping off the first mezzanine barrier by the dozens. They stormed a line of panicked security guards, who attempt to grab at and tackle them as they spree for the main floor dance party. I saw a girl in a fringe cut-off tank nearly derobed by the rough jostling of a guard. No one appeared to be seriously injured, although I did see two people laying on the floor at one point. It took several minutes for the guards to close off the most offending section and forced everyone to move further up, and even then lone runners from other sections continued to make a break for the main floor. Many were caught and kicked out, but even more were successful. Anthony Gonzales, M83's frontman, said "that's not very sweet of you" to the security guards (about the tackling) between songs. A dozen or so police were called in for back-up, though they don't seem to do anything. Now two-thirds full of raving teens packed in like sardines, the main floor moves in waves. And like lemmings crazed for dance, the leaping continued sporadically for the rest of the set.

Whitman Dewey-Smith

Not mellow.

UPDATE - Read another account from hot tipper Paulette Perhach, who wrote to us last night (but I needed her permission to post on the blog). After the jump!

We were herded in like goats, our guardians shouting to go this way or that way, walk all the way around the Key Arena. Our bags were searched, so they could be the ones to sell us liquor. On the way in, we passed a volunteer with a green sign on a stick that simply said "Go." As we rounded the stairs, one of the volunteers called after us, "No running!" We laughed and said in high-pitched voices: "No running, children!" Only we were adults.

Inside we went to walk down on the floor, because M83 is a band you want to dance to, not sit and nod your head to. The floor looked to have a 25% capacity bubble of a crowd around the stage, with 75% of the floor empty. We were stopped. "No more people on the floor," said a volunteer. "We have a quota from the fire marshal."

We hiked it to the top level, way back, where it looked like we were watching a group of people going to an M83 concert, rather than going to one ourselves. Kids trudged up the stairs, as disappointed as we were. Then the music started, and a few songs in, it looked like they were letting a flood of more people on the floor. Was this a Gold Pass VIP room letting out? Were they bucking the fire marshal? None of us knew, but the more determined of us started draining the top tiers toward the floor.

"Watch, as soon as they get down there, they'll stop letting people in," I said. I expected to see those dejected come walking back up.

The flow onto the floor stopped, but I didn't see that many people returning to their seats. What I noticed instead was a bottleneck, a concentration of heads too close together, too jittery, flowing halfway down a staircase. It was the unmistakable chaos of mob mentality, a bunch of frustrated kids facing a man in a blue shirt, jutting his finger, pointing in the direction from whence they came.

But far more fists pumped in the air. These kids were sick and tired of something. Maybe they had come for the freedom of music and art, and been met with the crowd control of too many lines, too many passes, too many tickets on top of the $150 ticket they already bought. Maybe they had a hard time believing it was really a safety issue. With an event so drowned in marketing and varying levelness of VIP-ness, who's to know what's real and what's fake? Maybe they were blinded by one too many photos in the Steampunk Corolla Photo Booth. Or they'd hit their head on the Prius Family Playground. Maybe they had failed their Scientology Stress Test and just completely lost their minds. Maybe they had just had enough and wanted someone to get out of their way so they could go and be part of something real.

Things turned to a scuffle. Limbs moving fast, push against push. The crowd cheered for those pushing toward the music. First they breached the security guards halfway up the stairs, and then they ran down, so close. There was pushing, pushing, hands grasping arms, arms breaking free. Red Rover, Red Rover. The first breach, someone running. Security guards running after. Juke left, juke right. Free, arms up, the kids pranced into the crowd jumping and dancing. Each time, one, two more people freer than we were in our seats, the crowd cheered. A security guard pulled and rip a kid's shirt like the jersey of a quarterback breaking the line, but he made it.

I found myself yelling "Go Go Go!" cheering for what I felt was my team. Yes, please, some one break free. We were all laughing, screaming, feeling more alive than I had all weekend.

Then a flood. Security guards tossed about. The crowd went wild. Dozens of kids got what they wanted, streaming in. I'm sorry for the security guards. I know they were just doing their jobs. I saw one limping, and I was sorry he'd been put in a bad situation.

"I see some teenagers are trying to get to the floor," said the M83 front man. "I don't care. Let's be wild. Let's be free."

Right then the cops marched in from the left. On the right, where the flood came down, I saw a girl being grabbed by both arms swing herself up and kick a security guard in the face, knocking him on his ass. She was escorted out by approximately 7 people.

There is the real issue of security, but who knows where the line actually is. In this age, the biggest risk we face is never really living. We can't let our music and our arts experiences become padded cells. Sometimes you have to vote, and sometimes all you have to vote with is the force of your physical body, bonded with those around, those who are sick of the forces getting between you and life. I say, keep pushing.

"I'm gonna drop a big beat poo-poo on your head!" - Angelo Moore, kicking off the Fishbone set.

Kelly O

Angelo Moore

The big beat poo-poo was indeed dropped, on the heads of the folks who crammed into Exhibition Hall. This was my first experience in the Exhibition Hall. The beer "garden" looked more pathetic than usual, quarantined off in the corner were the drinkers, their sad joker hats wilting under the shame of needing to "have a drink" instead of being able to "watch the show"—I hate how Seattle does this. Drinking an expensive beer and watching an expensive show go hand in hand, everyone knows that.

After I stopped gawking at the giant neon columns that obstructed much of the stage, I realized that Fishbone sounded fantastic! Way better than I thought they would sound! They looked great, too. Angelo was wearing a funky outfit (duh), and the dancing by all band members was top notch. I noticed more audience members were wearing hats than at any other Bumbershoot show thus far. Mostly fedoras. Fishbone and their fans LOVE fedoras. Wacky festival hats were also abundant (see: wilted joker hats in the beer garden), plus dad caps, animal beanies, and eccentric-lady gardening bonnets. Everyone had a great time bouncing to the ska antics of Fishbone. Except those drunks.

Kelly O

The four guys in Fujiya & Miyagi look like philatelists you can take home to mother. They are beyond a doubt the nicest British krautrock tribute band with a singer who channels Can shaman Damo Suzuki circa “I’m So Green.” F&M are motorik-obsessed minimalists who possess an incredibly deceptive funkiness. If you’ve paid them any heed at all, you’ve probably underestimated them. But they are fabulous group, and their first song last night at the dire Exhibition Hall was the best thing I heard all weekend outside of Hair and Space Museum’s Northwest Passage exhibit. Henceforth, please estimate Fujiya & Miyagi a bit higher.

First impressions in 15 minutes or less!

The Pains of Being Pure at Heart: Played a very pure and pared-down set live on the radio show, Too Beautiful to Live (live at the Vera Stage).

El Vez: Wins best pants at Bumbershoot, hands down. They were made of mirrors and sequins. I wanted to take a picture of them, but had roasted corn and friendship bracelets in my hands (sometimes you spend all your money at Bumbershoot in a delirious haze on the last day). El Vez said this is his last year running for President, due to the Mayan calendar ending.

Ty Segall: Loud! Yeah! You could hear him from anywhere in the festival!

Posse: Sounded great in the Promenade corridor!

Lights: Pretty girl playing pretty music.

The Vaselines: Awwwwww!!! So great. Just so great. Krist Novoselic joined them on stage with an accordion for "Jesus Wants Me for a Sunbeam." He is very beardy these days! I got Frances and Eugene to sign my paper dolls after their show. Frances said [in her delightful Scottish accent], "well my boobs are bigger than that!" Eugene sharpied a penis on himself. It was the best.

Quentin Rowan Is Very, Very Sorry He Wrote an Awesome Mash-Up Novel

1. Yesterday, writer Quentin Rowan spoke at a Words & Ideas talk titled Remix, Theft or Plagiarism? Kirby Ferguson, who made the wonderful web series Everything Is a Remix, was supposed to talk too, but he wasn't there. One in five people made a painfully noisy exit from the theater when this news was announced.

2. There are two schools of thought around "remix culture" nowadays—pro-remix and anti-remix. Pro-remix folks want artists to draw from everything and everywhere, and not apologize. Anti-remix thinks pro-remix is full of shit.

3. In 2011, Quentin Rowan wrote a spy novel called Assassin of Secrets. Within months of its release, internet sleuths discovered that it had been composed almost entirely from quotations of passages from other spy novels. People freaked out, the publisher recalled the book, and Rowan's world was temporarily fucked.

4. Before its publication, Assassin of Secrets was widely praised by a number of critics and authors. Spy novelist Jeremy Duns called it an "instant classic."

4. Quentin Rowan feels very, very bad that he deceived a lot of people with his novel. He believes what he did was wrong. He did it because the pressure he put on himself to be a "great writer" became too much to bear. He didn't think he could "do it on his own."

6. There's not much difference, formally, between Assassin of Secrets and, say, any Girl Talk album. The reason Girl Talk was praised and Rowan pilloried is that Girl Talk was unabashedly remixing, while Rowan was hopeful that no one would find him out.

7. People today seem to be fine with musicians sampling, and making remixes, and making mash-ups. Writers? Not so much.

8. Quentin Rowan is very lovable. He seems shy, and smart, and SO NERDY. He made that grating I-need-to-clear-my-throat sound as he breathed in and out, characteristic of every nerd portrayed in a film ever. He made me feel really bad for him. He seems like a sweet and genuine person. He's working on a screenplay for a espionage-esque film, for a production company in New York that approached him after the scandal. They told him that pulling details from previous works and rearranging them is basically "what most screenwriters do anyway."

9. Quentin Rowan's next book, which is plagiarism-free, is coming out next week. It's a confessional memoir called Never Say Goodbye, which chronicles his ascent to literary micro-stardom, and his subsequent fall.

10. I wish Quentin Rowan would own Assassin of Secrets for what it was—a brilliant satire of the spy genre, a work of pastiche, a comment on the structures of genre itself. But he doesn't see it this way—he sees it as a personal failure. And I wish that that little detail didn't make all the difference in the world.

[ Comment on this story ]

For me? It's obvious. The motherfucking Promise Ring were the best thing about my weekend.

The band sounded so, so great, and they all seemed really happy to be there, playing songs that are well over a decade old, to a crowd who refused to forget them.

But enough about me. What did YOU love most at this year's Bumbershoot?

Kelly O

When Omar claps, you dance.

I’ve never seen somebody do so little to trigger so frenzied a response as Omar Souleyman did yesterday at Fisher Green Stage. Looking like the stoic, ’stached, and shaded badass who’d give you a speeding ticket in Damascus, the Syrian vocalist wailed in Arabic tales of romantic heartbreak and triumph, with frequent “EEEYYYOOO”s that were delayed to create the effect of several Omars in agony and ecstasy. He took many breaks from vocalizing to daintily clap and nonchalantly urge the crowd to dance, but ultimately he didn’t seem to give a damn if you did (I mean, I’m sure he did care, but his demeanor suggested he’s not going to weep if you remain stationary; it’s also safe to say Omar did not recognize Mark Arm standing front and center during his whole set, and if he did, he remained unruffled by the Mudhoney legend’s presence).

Dave Segal/The Stranger

Rizan Sa'id: Another day at the synthesizer bank.

The real star of any Omar Souleyman live show is keyboardist Rizan Sa’id. Working a couple of Korg synthesizers, Sa’id wears the sort of dour expression seen mainly on post office workers. But he coaxed his instruments to wild flights of whirling glee and headlong, oblong rhythms that could pass for techno, even though this is technically called dabke: Syrian folk and pop and wedding music.

Kelly O

Mark Arm: He's a Soul(eyman) man.

The dominant sound is a warped, melismatic, saz-like bleat that fibrillates with strange, serpentine charm. Ragged, rapid beats and hand-drum ratatats kept asses moving all set in the perfect summer weather Monday. It didn’t matter that Sa’id only seemed to have two vocal samples in his hard drive: “come on” and “bring it down.” The crowd went mad for Omar and Rizan’s action-packed compositions, even though it was doubtful anyone understood a syllable the former sang. This was one of the highlights of 2012 Bumbershoot.

Can I just cut and paste my review from the last time Bombino hit Seattle at Nectar? I thought not.

Although the Agadez, Niger guitarist/vocalist brought a smaller unit—bassist, drummer, dancer, and that Caucasian guy who looks like he’s moonlighting from Average White Band on rhythm guitar—the sound was pretty similar: elemental electric, desert blues that’s at once joyous and devastatingly plaintive. Again, the drummer stroked out a fairly unchanging rhythm, a lopsided gallop/quasi-waltz time pattern heavy on the snare and cymbals (bop bop botta-tssss botta-tssss; I felt sorry for the larger tom-tom on the right side of the kit, which didn’t get hit all afternoon).

Dave Segal/The Stranger

Serious hypnosis through electrified desert blues.

Bombino’s guitar tone remains flinty and chiming, flowing in a regimental manner, with sporadic disciplined solos that nobody would dare to call self-indulgent. Bombino’s parched, soulful voice still sounds over 2,000 years old and as riveting as right now. Again, with today’s set there were no peaks or troughs. Bombino’s songs are "merely" steady-state glides into eternal peacefulness, with cascading undercurrents of strife. Save the last trance for me.

[ Comment on this story ]

Her set provided what I can only describe as world-class hiphop— a hiphop that's heavy, that's produced by a talented expert, that booms, that has depth, that has a whole lot of heart. Also, Tijoux didn't dress hiphop (baggy this, baggy that, baseball cap). She instead looked like a regular woman heading to an almost mindless job in some mid-sized firm. But her raps, in Spanish, got to the soul and fire of things. All I want now is for Bumbershoot to feature more global rappers, more rappers in other native tongues.

(But only slightly older.) Stuff I have been witnessing on/around the older-than-teens folks: Band T-shirts. Ponytails on guys. Sunscreen. Hydrating. Shorts and sandals. Regular-size backpacks. Hilarious sock tans. Complicated jewelry on the ladies. Trail mix.

It sounded like a gunshot. Reignwolf has been picking up blog adoration a lot this year, and while I missed his set at Block Party, the people I know who did go came out glowing, shimmering with sweat and glee. There was discussion of him impregnating the audience with his crazy sex eyes, and perhaps the first litters of Reignpups are already being born. Surely there will be another generation of them after today’s hourlong show.

Reignwolf looks like Werewolf the Fonz. The teens loved him. I loved him. He said he “just made a new friend on the street, and asked him to come play with us.” It was a guy who drums on overturned buckets, maybe you have seen him before. He looked as at ease to be up onstage with people screaming as he is to busk out on the street. He was great. Reignwolf sweat, but his hair stayed amazing. (HOW? Give us your secrets.) No one has given more to the audience, probably, all Bumbershoot, than Reignwolf just did. When he climbed off the stage and sat on the barrier and kept playing, everyone sweat harder, tried to touch him, screamed, and had a million orgasms.

TIMOTHY RYSDYKE

Shredding.

A guy who looked like Amish Dave Navarro was standing behind him sometimes, wearing a tall hat and taking pictures. His drummer was great, and his fellow guitarist was great, but even greater (duh) was when Mr. Wolf played guitar and drums at the same time. Then he finished the set by throwing the guitar onto the drum set and walking off in a way that managed to be both jovial and badass (more secrets!), while the guitar kept playing itself. Then he came back for an encore and everyone Reignwolfed themselves again.

(Alternate title for this post: "The Reignwolf in Spainwolf Falls Mainly on the Plainwolf.")

TIMOTHY RYSDYKE

I have zero musical talent. None. I mean, I took piano lessons as a kid, and tried to play bass guitar as a teenager, and I sing really loudly in the car, but I was never actually all that great at any of those things and besides that, the idea of getting on a stage and playing in front of people makes me want to barf.

But the Young Evils make playing music look so easy and fun that it's impossible for me to watch them and not want to jump on stage and do what they do. Shake a tambourine or dance along or even sing. Of course, if I tried I wouldn't be nearly as good at it. The band is really perfecting a crunchy pop rock sound that is both energetic and effortless, as witness in their performance of my personal favorite, "Dead Animals":

And, of course, as is my way, I will sum up guitarist Troy Nelson's guitar slaying moves in .gifs:

So. Who wants to be in my band?

He was the Tony Bennettest Tony Bennett who ever Tony Benetted. He was up there smiling away, holding his arms out, one time he twirled and everyone died of happiness, he didn’t really act like he was 8 million years old, but also a hologram might’ve done the trick, too? KeyArena was PACKED. Tony Bennett packed that house like you wouldn’t believe. The ushers were turning people away when I got there, although seats could be scrounged if you were willing to search. People were jostling each other, elbowing each other to try to get in, carrying beers. Carrying big full beers into the Tony Bennett concert! I kept wondering if people actually knew who he was or if they made a mistake. But they knew! They kept saying, “It’s Tony Bennett!” I was impressed with the youths’ enthusiasm. Here! More pictures. TONY BENNETT.

SUZI PRATT

...The Seattle's 42 day without rain. It really is one of the most glorious Bumbershoot days I have seen in my 20 years in this city. The air is even clearer than usual. Light, leaves, blues, green, breezes, a confusion of sounds. My only problem with all his is I have two kids and there's no place I can drink with kids. This is deeply frustrating. And it's not just Bumbershoot alone: the whole damn city makes it hard for functional alcoholics like myself to enjoy a drink or two or four or more while minding their children. All of this, which has the ring of Christian morality about it, has to be challenged. There is nothing wrong with drinking while parenting.

That said, here is a tee, made by Casual Industries, that caught my attention:

Patty: Hey, kid.

Derek: Hi, mama.

Patty: What's wrong?

Derek: Oh, nothing. Well, okay, I'm depressed. I have some sort of writer's block.

Patty: I'm sorry. What are you writing about?

Derek: Just this show I have to cover for the paper, I don't know how to say what I want to say.

Patty: What is the show?

Derek: Mac Miller, he's a rapper from Pittsburgh.

Patty: I've never heard of him.

Derek: Well, he's pretty famous. He played in a pretty big arena tonight at a music festival, kind of like the Richfield Coliseum near Cleveland.

Patty: Well, that's big.

Derek: Right? And now I'm having this crisis over writing about it.

SUZI PRATT

Patty: What is the crisis?

Derek: Okay, here's the problem. Here's this guy, he's born the same year that I graduated from high school. He's wildly successful, I mean, the kids are going crazy at this festival. Sure, the place he played was only 1/2 full, but still, he's in that big of a place.

Patty: So, just say it wasn't any good.

Derek: Right, but who am I to judge that? I mean, I obviously don't know what's good, otherwise I'd be a wildly successful rapper, you know? If I knew exactly what the best part of things were, I'd compile those and put together some sort of act and be my own Mac Miller, right?

Patty: But somebody is paying you to let people know your opinion about things.

Derek: Sure, but I'd say most of the readers usually disagree! We're talking about opinions here! Mac Miller starts his show with a clip of Jimi Hendrix playing the "Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock...

Patty: He did?

Derek: Well, he did tonight, probably because Jimi Hendrix is from Seattle. But then after that, it was just a bunch of strobe lights and yelling. He did that thing before nearly every song where he said something like, "HOW ARE YOU FEELING TONIGHT SEATTLE?" People would get excited and cheer. His delivery was so typical and the subject matter was painfully boring. In between the first two songs he played home video clips of himself as a child. He made everybody raise their hands a whole bunch of times. I think the lyrics to one of his songs was just about keeping their hands up. They kept their hands up the whole time!

Patty: That sounds like it would get really tiring. I had a mean teacher in 6th grade that made us hold a stack of books on our extended arms for an hour.

SUZI PRATT

Derek: Right? And everybody was doing it! These kids were a gigantic herd of sheep! And all of his fans are a sort of breed of lazy entitled teens, they just want to sleep all day and get stoned and make a lot of money and have a lot of sex.

Patty: But that's like most kids today.

Derek: Sure, maybe! But the point is, this is where I realized that I've totally lost touch with youth culture! I'm absolutely the old man in the ratty white tank top, milling about the lawn, yelling at teenagers!

Patty: That day has to come eventually, I guess.

Derek: But that person probably shouldn't be writing for a newspaper, informing people on culture.

Patty: But what is the alternative? Having a Mac Miller fan write a review? That wouldn't be right. First of all, those kids today can barely use the English language.

Derek: Okay, that's another thing! Before the show there were these giant TV screens in front of the stage and people could send Tweets to the music festival address and they would play on the screen...

Patty: Oh, no.

Derek: Right? It was just things like, "Mah boyeee Mac Miller cumn up nex 4 real." Another one said, "@macmiller: i want to have your babies."

Patty: I'm so glad I'm not going to be that baby.

Derek: Me too! I love you mama. I think this is the last thing I'm ever going to write for the paper.

Patty: Okay! You should come back to Ohio. It's really pretty here during fall!
