If you didn't already get your Sasquatch tickets (which sold out in a record 90 minutes time) then you are shit out of luck. If you did buy tickets, however, you are probably quite stoked right now because the festival just added Elvis Costello and the Imposters to the line-up.

To throw in a game-changer like Elvis Costello weeks after tickets already sold out? Now that's just mean.

Last night's Sasquatch! Launch Party at the Neptune featured the eclectic lineup of Cody ChesnuTT (you have to read Larry's piece on ChesnuTT here), Built to Spill, and a special surprise* (*not actually a surprise) appearance by Macklemore.

The lineup was announced, and people talked about it in very good and very bad ways, all over the internet. I LOVE camping and I LOVE people watching, and I LIKE music (JK music, you know you're my #1), so Sasquatch is super fun for me. Plus people on drugs! And free Pop Chips! Even if only three women will be there to play, total, that just means more Pop Chips in the lady-tent, am I right? (Side note: please book more ladies everywhere, all the time, tho.)

To see the full lineup, and talk about how YOU'RE feeling about it, check out Megan's post here and then listen to Josh Bis' Sasquatch Spotify playlist here.

Now then, here are some wonderful photos from last night, taken by Molly Bauer.

Molly Bauer

Cody ChesnuTT

I loved Cody ChesnuTT's dance moves (lots of butt wiggling) and outfit (WWII-style helmet, red sweater). His bass player was also super entertaining. Actually, they all were.

Molly Bauer

Macklemore

Before the show, some friends told us the surprise guest was definitely Macklemore, because, "it was all over Craigslist."

Molly Bauer

Macklemore

I haven't seen Macklemore & Ryan Lewis since they became Seattle's favorite sons, so it was nice to catch them in a smallish setting—not a ton of people were let in, but those who were seemed downright ecstatic to be there. Mack played those three songs ("Thrift Shop", "Same Love", and the one about the ceiling), confetti cannons went off, and the dance moves were spot-on. Mack looks like he's been doing pilates. I am calling him "Mack" now like he is my son.

Molly Bauer

Built to Spill

Built to Spill covered Smiths "How Soon is Now" and "Don't Fear the Reaper" along with "some Captain Beefheart song" (I admit, I was not there when this happened, because there was a fro yo hut down the street, and you know how it is).

More photos! In no particular order! Happening right now!

Molly Bauer

There was something extra charming about those ill-fitting pants...

The Sasquatch lineup was revealed in person to the Neptune and to the greater internet universe late last night.

Because I had a spare hour this morning and wanted to get a chance to dig below the headliners, I put together this somewhat arbitrary* playlist of as many Sasquatch artists as I could find on Spotify. Let's all have a listen together?

* Methods: for each band, choose two "top hits" from the Artist page. Bands not yet in the celestial jukebox: Reignwolf, Odesza, Nissim, Nacho Picasso, Let's Talk, Rose Windows, and Peace. Comedians Nick Offerman, Nancy & Beth, Brody Stevens, James Adomian, Jenny Slate, Joe Mande, and Brett Gelman also omitted.

Let me know if I've missed someone or make a case for inclusion of songs more representative of a band's true ultimate essence not captured by the robot algorithms within Spotify's dark heart.

[ Comment on this story ]

I hear there was also confetti.

Here's who's playing the festival, happening May 24-27th at the Gorge:

On February 4th, the Neptune will host the Sasquatch Launch Party. Built to Spill and Cody ChesnuTT will play, Luke Burbank will host, and Sasquatch organizers will announce the line-up for the annual Memorial Day Weekend festival.

It's already been rumored that the Postal Service are reuniting, possibly for Coachella, but there's no way they'd get back together and NOT play Sasquatch, right?

Telekinesis also has no Seattle date on his upcoming spring tour (featuring members of Say Hi, Wild Flag, and the Globes!).

Hmmm... Who else do you think might be appearing?

Tickets to the party are free and available Saturday, February 2, at the Neptune Theatre box office. First come, first served.

Post submitted yesterday morning but published this morning due to editorial resources being dedicated to yesterday's murders. —Eds

Sasquatch App had some pretty hideous artwork happening

The Sasquatch App was really helpful for schedules, band bios, maps, and info, but you had to look up what you wanted to see pretty quickly because after 30 seconds it would promptly crash. Also, the cartoony artwork for the app and adorning the sides of every stage is kind of terrible.

Hospitality is a K Records band from Brooklyn that I found out about from impatiently skipping around the Sasquatch festival website's media player of bands playing the festival. I was so pleasantly surprised by their song "Friends of Friends," that I made it a point to check them out. They were fun and charming live, plus the wind was blowing so hard during their set on the Bigfoot Stage and it reminded me of the music video for Blur's "Song #2."

Kyle Johnson

Hospitality

Two shirtless dudes in the audience at Hey Marseilles had the singer's name painted onto their chests, and were yelling and pointing during their pretty orchestral pop set. I'm hoping that band will be getting more fanatical hockey-style fans in the future.

Christopher Nelson

Hey Marseilles Noon Set: Seems a good a time as any to pop your shirt off and paint your chest

Table wars and mind-games were raging by day three in the Media Room. There was a lot of Beard Rock at this festival, which I avoided as much as I could so no one has to hear me complain about it. There was even an act called Beardyman, but I don't think it was an actual NW Beard Rock band. Later on, one of my friends referred to the genre as "Dilf Rock."

Kyle Johnson

NW Beardrock, or Dilf Rock

I don't care much for M. Ward, so it was not a great place to have some pot food kick in. I tried to make a joke about it to Emily—"More like Zzzz Ward"—but she was also pretty stoned and asked me if I was speaking English. Alternately, Thee Satisfaction is a fantastic place to have pot food kick in.

Kyle Johnson

M. Ward

The wind was also going crazy during Wild Flag's set, and that band had the most high-kicks during guitar solos I've ever seen...it made me wonder if they ever kick each other over on accident. They ended with Carrie Brownstein putting down her guitar and singing a delightful Patti Smith cover.

Kyle Johnson

"We are happy to be here in this wind-tunnel White Snake video."

In the back of the Yeti Stage, I saw a girl crack the last beer from backstage and smugly congratulate herself with, "Looks like you're gonna have to deal with the canned Margaritas, 'Hey Rosetta!'"

Christopher Nelson

Jack White

Seeing Jack White on Saturday was the highlight for me. Speaking of killer aesthetics, even Jack White's guitar techs had bowler hats and tailored suits on as they set up amps. The last time I saw him perform was over a decade ago, in Southern California when I was a teenager and had randomly snuck into a smallish White Stripes show. I've been a huge Jack White fan ever since.

Christopher Nelson

Jack White

For his solo project, he is alternately touring with both an all female and an all male backing band, and switching off which band he plays with. On Saturday, the Edward Scissorhands-coiffed Jack opted for the all male backing band. I'm not sure how you would feel if you dont have a 10-plus-year love for Jack White's music, but I most certainly found myself in the front, embarrassingly scream-yelling lyrics to the handful of White Stripes songs he played along with the teenage fan boy next to me.

Kyle Johnson

Emecks, the Jungle Cat from Don't Talk To The Cops

We ended up waking up late to find that our stomachs had been eaten away and destroyed by three days of subsisting only on sugar-free Red Bulls, marijuana treats, and canned margaritas. We limped through the 3 pm crowds to see Don't Talk to the Cops playing the Maine Stage. They killed it as usual, even under the hot sun, but unfortunately the combination of serotonin depletion, dehydration, taurine, and caffeine causes a full body hangover that forced us to retreat back to Seattle before Beck plays. THE END.

The fourth and final day of Sasquatch was the hottest of all. We had been on the fence about leaving on Sunday, but ultimately decided we could handle one more night. Our newest camping neighbors had a DJ (?!) hunched over a laptop in the front seat of a huge truck, blaring music for the entire campground to hear at 2 am! His "set" included such favorites as The Eagles, some very depressing Radiohead, but mostly just trance (trance, trance).

Don't Talk to the Cops was the perfect last music to see. I don't think I have ever been more determined to dance at 4 pm in the blazing sun. Kids in gold lamé leggings and bikinis were losing their minds. A girl next to me was actually dirty dancing! There was a lot of guest star action - OC Notes and Ronnie Voice shared the mics, while Them Team did some impressive breakdancing without succumbing to heat stroke. Trent Moorman drummed better than any computer ever and Josh Rule played a different instrument every few minutes like it was NBD.

Don't Talk to the Cops

After trying to understand so much music all weekend, it was good to just hear tunes I knew and loved, from Seattle, from right now!

With a truth-in-advertising name newly ascendant fun. drew probably the biggest crowd of the day at the Bigfoot stage, arriving to a personal fanfare and electromagnetically drawing everyone to their occasionally Autotuned set. By the time they closed their set with undeniable hits "We Are Young" and "Some Nights" thousands of sun-drenched fans provided an overwhelming chorus of background vocals. The only other daytime acts with as big of a draw were powered by movie stars: a massive audience arrived for a glimpse of the country music stylings of John C. Reilly and friends packed the Yeti lawn and a million teenagers swarmed to see joke rockers Jack Black and Kyle Gass performing in front of a giant inflatable phoenix penis as Tenacious D.

Less showy, but nonetheless enjoyable were sets from Feist, the amazing longevity of classic indie hits from Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Silversun Pickups, modern afrobeat futurism from Seattle's favorite Shabazz Palaces, as well as an intense Yeti closer from Ted Leo.

So many more photos after the jump.

The moral of the story: Come prepared. I brought what I thought would be enough supplies to last the three-and-a-half day stint. Most of it was gone by the second day. When you run out of stuff, you either have to convince your ride (or yourself) to drive out for replenishments or be subjected to these and similar markups. YEE-HAW.

Beck

You guys. Four days is just a lot of days of the Sasquatch Music Festival. By the time evening rolled around I'd succumbed to drinking American Sized cans of Bud Lite and leaving my camera in the beer garden instead of bringing it with me to take pictures of Spiritualized. Eternal hugs to the outstanding production team who recovered my gear, wheezing curses to the sprint up and down the steeper-every-time hill, and longing regrets for having to miss almost all of Spiritualized due to a schedule change that put them up against Beck due to a last-minute Mogwai cancellation (Deer Tick filled in with a "covers set" — Replacements and Nirvana, not Scottish post-rock).

We didn't make it through Beck's whole performance, but the first third was a veritable greatest hits collection with the set front-loaded with the likes of "Loser", "Sea Change", "Devil's Haircut", and a medley that included his take on Price's "Raspberry Beret." What we saw seemed entirely gimmick free: no puppets, light shows, or zany dance moves — just an assured performance drawing from an incredibly deep collection of beloved songs. I haven't followed Beck very closely over the years, yet found myself recogning just about everything and finding it difficult to tear myself away to return to the parking lot for the drive back to Ellensburg. Did anyone make it to the very end? Induce some jealously by letting me know what I missed.

A few more quick snaps of Beck and Spiritualized after the jump; more from the rest of the festival once we return to the warm embrace of Seattle this afternoon.

When did festival-goers get so keen on dressing like animals? They were everywhere I looked, dressed like cats, tigers, bears, dogs, several unicorns, a few pikachu, horses and various kinds of birds...it's like fucking Halloween out there. And normally (such as in the case for Halloween,) I think that it's used as an excuse for people to dress "sexy," but it was too hot and there were too many full-body fur suits and rubber pony masks for that to be the case. I asked a festival photographer friend Kyle Johnson to shoot a few pictures of these beasts, but there's no picture that could document how disheartening it feels to have some jerk in a dirty panda costume cut front of you in an already super lame Sasquatch porta-potty line.

Here's a group of kids I was happy to meet! We crossed paths just outside of the Media Area, where a maze of bathroom water overflows into a dirt path, now affectionately called HEPATITIS MARSH.

What are your names and where are you from?
Kate: I'm Kate from Seattle!
Craig: I'm Craig from Seattle, WA!
Katie: I'm Katie from Seattle! I'm his brother (points to Craig).
Craig: I'm your sister!
Katie: I'm your sister!

What's the best thing you've seen this weekend?
Kate: St. Vincent. By far.
Craig: Trampled by Turtles, hands down.
Katie: Oh my God, do I have to choose one?

You can say as many as you want.
Craig: Put the Head and the Heart in there.
Katie: Okay, Wolfgang Gartner was sick. Well, uh, Alabama Shakes! Man, they were legit! And Allen Stone!

Do you think this atmosphere is an appropriate way to celebrate Memorial Day?
Kate: Yeah! Yeah!
Craig: Yes, definitely.

In what way, do you think?
Craig: We're having a damn good time.
Kate: Everyone's down to party and it's fine.

So tell me how you feel about JonBenét Ramsey.
Katie: Uh...

What about Flamin' Hot Cheetos?
Katie: I mean they taste pretty good but they're kind of bad for you so I can't say I eat them.

What's better, sweat bands or sweat shops?
Kate: (unsure) Sweat bands? (more sure) Yeah, sweat bands.

And do you consider Mother Earth a MILF?
Craig: Absolutely!

Thanks to Katie, Kate & Craig!

Howlin' Rain
Watching Howlin' Rain, the band comprised of members of Comets on Fire and Drunkhorse, beards fly about the stage, but it really just makes me wish I were watching Drunkhorse or Comets on Fire, and the Yeti Stage seems the most middling of stages—cramped, the sound deadened by the surrounding structures instead of rolling out into the wide open spaces.

War on Drugs
Up the hill a bit at the Bigfoot Stage War on Drugs' guitar sounds had no such trouble. The wind and I think the heat affect how the sounds go out, and in the hot sun their Springsteen/Dylan-esque thing sounds kind of perfect. If I take one thing away from the festival I'd like to be the moment they start "Comin' Through" and I have a cold $11 24-ounce beer in hand. Bittersweet it was.

Josh Bis

Wild Flag

Wild Flag, the Walkmen, and Dyme Def
The Bigfoot Stage rules throughout most of the rest of the day. Wild Flag and Walkmen are total pros and both put on flawless sets. Across the walk at the Maine Stage (hardy-har), which is a new addition this year, Dyme Def have the crowd in full swing. It's some of the worst white-people dancing I've witnessed in years, but at least they have the confidence to try. (I do not.) The Maine Stage is dedicated to NW hiphop acts, and although there's little sound bleed over between it and the stage, it feels a little tacked on. Also, why the "Maine Stage"? They ain't got no Samsquanches in Maine.

Josh Bis

Zola Jesus

Zola Jesus
Zola Jesus is a tiny human being. But this didn't stop her from blowing out the difficult Yeti Stage with her tremendous bellows. The crowd is a bit light, and I can't help but think she deserves to be out on that Main Stage with that gorgeous backdrop to compliment such espansive sound.

Instead it is the Head and the Heart.

Josh Bis

Beirut

Beirut
Beirut's sound is pleasant as the sun sets, but the lack of decent sleep and the sun are conspiring to end my night. I go back to camp for a "short nap" and wake up around midnight and spend several hours kicking myself for missing Bon Iver.

Things overheard in the camping grounds on Monday morning:

Canadian pointing at BBQ: "Hey this thing is still smoking. What should I do with it?"

"Let's go back, cause I think I lost everything."

"I'm sorry, but four days without a shower is pretty skanky."

Cigarette butts and cans and broken bottles litter the grounds. The troops are weary. We hear that Mogwai "had trouble with their visas," and had to cancel, but that Spiritualized will do a mega-set to make up for it. We are not sure we can make it.

Josh Bis

Blind Pilot: Indie and sincere

If there was any big picture message to yesterday evening's mainstage lineup at Sasquatch, it might have been something about sentimentality and suspension of critical detachment. Glanced at the wrong angle, each of the three bands at the top of the bill are a half step and a smart writer away from being SNL skits about the ridiculousness of a particular thread of indie music. Foot stomping praise choruses, eastern european folk music re-appropriated by a headstrong high school dropout, and falsetto word salads born from woodsy isolation. But, in the always majestic setting of the Gorge with the sun setting behind the hills, I was pretty happy to be on the side of buying in to the whole ball of mushy sincerity.

More on Head and the Heart, Beirut, Bon Iver, and Beat Connection after the jump...

Josh Bis

The Head and the Heart

Though the Head and the Heart remain a band where I'm more excited to hear what they do with a second album, particularly in terms of lyrical depth, I will never deny their ability to write some infectiously affecting melodies. Particularly when performed live for an increasingly large increasingly devoted audience, it's a real spectacle.

Josh Bis

Beirut

I'm not the type to really have lists of favorite bands, but I realized last night that if I were to make one Beirut would have to be at the top of that list. I'm a huge sucker for the appeal of a stray horn here or there in an indie band; so a whole lot of them in service of re-purposing various strains of wandering european folk traditions is exponentially better. Throw in some ukulele, buttery smooth baritone vocals, and an accordion here and there and I'm good for days. This was my third time seeing the band in just over a month and let's just say that the wind had kicked up a lot of dust by the time Zach Condon performed a solo rendition of "the Penalty" to stall while an emergency accordion operation happened off stage.

Josh Bis

Bon Iver

And then there's the astonishing fact of Bon Iver in a headlining spot. More than the existence of this situation, the fact that Justin Vernon has turned his solitary broken hearted cabin wolf excorcisms into material that slay as arena rock. Aside from the ratty abandoned haunted dockside stage set, there's the amplitude of the full band with its dramatic trombones and Colin Stetson's deal-with-the-devil saxophonery and a loud-quiet-loud setlist that culminates with call-and-response singalongs to "the Wolves", a pin-drop silent solo rendition of "re: Stacks", and the eighties monster "Beth/Rest" — a thesis statement about the possibility of happy coexistence between the dueling forces of earnest irony and pretentious ridiculousness in modern musical settings. Like I said, I could imagine how people could dismiss this all, but am kind of glad that I don't.

Josh Bis

Beat Connection

Stray observations

Are Beat Connection huge yet? Do they fly from gig to gig on moodlit private jets? If not, there's something seriously wrong with the universe. They're smart, attractive, and put on the most fun set of the day. Having recently expanded from duo to quartet and picked up a horn section and guest vocalists, their calypso/electro shenanigans were accompanied by tripped out live visuals and turned the dusty dance tent into a great big house party that culminated with arrival of summer appropriate "In the Water". I can't wait to hear their new record.

It's unseemly to wish sorrow on anyone, but I nevertheless couldn't help thinking how much more I like M. Ward when he's a little depressed ("Beginners") vs. the newer feelgood honkytonk.

A whole lot of seventies rock revivialism in effect.

Unsurprisingly, James Murphy is a really good DJ. Emerging from whiskery retirement, the LCD Soundsystem mastermind disappeared into the background of song selection and lasers while everyone crowded into the dance tent for dancing rather than celebrity gawking.

I know. It's been a few years since they wrapped the mainstage in dark plastic and groans about this are getting old. But it's still kind of sad when the bands have to ask the audience to e-mail pictures of the jaw-dropping scenic backdrop that they can't see because they're performing in a black box. Certainly if we whine hard enough, someone might discover and employ technology to block wind but not light.

Did anyone else notice the Shins lineup changes right away? The missing Dave Hernandez, Jesse Sandoval, and Marty Crandall? How did new-Shins sound?
Better, worse, or same?

Yesterday was rough. I didn't see as much music as I could have, but that's because people are gross and it seemed like everywhere I turned The Head and The Heart was playing.

Still better than waking to up to people doing yoga in a field.

Hey Marseilles are the kind of heartfelt and sharp dressed boys who might serenade you from outside your bedroom window. After getting your parents' permission first, of course. Their earnest-without-being-cheesy songs are sweeping and pretty. I appreciated their sincerity amongst the sea of tie-dyed jeans shorts and American flag mini-skirts that are normally right up my alley. I realized my alley has room for a cello player every once and awhile. Like when you really love Doritos and you have a huge bowl of Doritos and your fingers are orange and you kind of have a Dorito headache and suddenly you get offered a sincere cantaloupe. Whoa! That's not what I normally eat! But man does it taste good right now.

Dale Earnhardt Jr Jr is a really funny band name, unfortunately they sounded like every indie song on an Urban Outfitters loop mashed together with some of that Vampire Weekend jingle jangle guitar on top. Chugging drums, boy vocals harmonizing and building into a wall of sound. God it sounded like everything.

That Getty Images lady is still here, and as I type she is yelling "the internet" at her giant laptop. Derek is about the be awarded the Purple Heart for his bravery in writing about / interacting with the Getty Monster yesterday, no less than 17 media tent people have come up to shake his hand in thanks.

Girl Talk: Splendid and wild with energy. Kids going mad, everybody is happy. Gregg Gillis is from Pittsburgh, PA. There are really nice bridges in Pittsburgh, PA.
Pretty Lights: A giant natural amphitheater is an odd setting for computer music, but the audience seemed to love it. I was concerned about the environmental impact of the thousands of glow sticks hurled into the crowd, but if teens consider Mother Earth a MILF, well then, whatevs.

Mark Lanegan: I talked to a lady who's been a Lanegan fan for years, she said this was one of his best shows that she'd ever seen. You know how people talk about "it" and whether people have it or not? It seems that Mark Lanegan has that.
Metal Chocolates: Usually brilliant, perfectly capable of making a giant group of people have a good time. Also known as OC Notes, we're fortunate to be able to call him one of ours.

Charles Bradley: HOLY FUCK. Fantastic voice, incredible moves, brilliant band, tight pants. Certainly a weekend highlight.
Blitzen Trapper: Not really my thing, as I'm not wild for rural indie twang, but I overhead a girl say that she'd be happy to get pregnant by the music of Blitzen Trapper. Which I took to mean not listening to it while doing it, but actually having the music go all up in there, etc.

Metric: GREAT! The sound for this show was particularly precise, more than anything I've seen so far otherwise.
The Shins: I'm a Shins fan, for sure. Things seem to be totally different since the line-up change. In the middle of the set a teenage girl asked me, "What in the fuck is this shit?" They played a lot of stuff off of the first two records which sounded great. Otherwise, dude should be regretting the line-up change, if you ask me and probably the girl who asked "What in the fuck is this shit?"

Goons attacking the sno-cone machine.

Jack White: If there's anybody that everybody talked about about with across the board positive enthusiasm, it's ex-Goober & the Peas drummer Jack White. The crowd was extra stoked during the White Stripes and Raconteurs covers, but the whole set was blistering and riotous.
Kurt Vile: Enviable hair, aloof attitude, commanding personality. Splendid. Overheard opinion seems to be split, but I think that guy is an infinite talent. Most likely always recommended.
Thee Satisfaction: Go ahead and believe the hype, no joke.

THE FUN IS OVER

Black Whales: Having an early slot can be tough at these things, but these guys were perfectly suited for early day laze in the sun jams. One girl twirled in circles for the whole set and then collapsed onto a group of people eating hot dogs.

MORE REVIEWS TO COME, I'M SURE YOU CANNOT WAIT.

Yesterday was fun, hot, tired, crabby, fun, really fun, and delirious - in that order. Here are a few informed notes about yesterday's music part of this music festival!

Charles Bradley was the perfect first act to see while shaking off an "I just slept in my car in my clothes" hangover, as well as just a regular hangover. His dance moves (air humping!) and soothing soul sounds got everyone excited - Kokanee strippers and guys on mushrooms alike!

The couple Blitzen Trapper songs I caught were...um... creedyrdwater revivnyrd uncle-core rock?

Josh Bis

Craft Spells

The delightful tingalings of Craft Spells wafted towards me while I was wearily wandering through the garbage fields to the overflowing porta-waste sheds. They sounded like what fruit snacks and Kool-Aid taste like (awesome)!

The dark and severe aesthetic of Dum Dum Girls seemed a little out of place in the sun soaked neon fruit bowl that is Sasquatch, but they have some great songs and their vocals sounded better than I ever remember them sounding. Yeah black tights and lipstick!

Oh MAN, tUnE-yArDs is totally forgiven for that band name stylization (it reminds me of a Myspace name like *~CrYsTaL~*~* or something). Merrill Garbus was a sight to behold with her face paint and perfect tropical style. She worked a row of pedals under her drums with bare feet, effortlessly recording and looping her yodel-y harmonies on the spot with layers and layers and layers of drum beats and sounds. A jaunty bassist and two zany sax players in matching vests made noises I wasn't aware their instruments could make. I was riveted. It was so refreshingly neat! Teens in copy makeup were spotted throughout the festival for the rest of the weekend.

Josh Bis

Tune-yards! (Im not doing the caps thing, no way).

Walking towards The Shins stage, eighteen-year-old me got so many goosebumps when "Kissing the Lipless" was the first thing I heard. Then they played some new songs and eighteen-year-old-me felt slighted. Then I watched eighteen-year-olds dance like crazy to the new songs and I felt my actual age, which was a relief.

Ooooooh and then there was Jack White. Weird and handsome as ever, he did his Jack White thing and did not disappoint. But you don't need me to music write about Jack White, so can we talk about how he looks exactly like Johnny Depp these days?

Josh Bis

Edward Shredderhands

More sweet coverage to come! We just decided to stay another night!

For any festival goers reading this, there's a secret Stranger Fashion Tunnel after-party tonight in the ATM tent. Bring your ATM receipt for admission. Some girls with legwarmers will be there!

I asked this guy to put down his phone while I took his photo, but he couldn't because he said he had "no control." (OH MAN, SORRY: BAD BAD RELIGION JOKE)

Christen Greene surveys the fashion delights of the music festival. In this mind, that guy is having an orgy with himself & his id and ego, as well as the gaze.

The older gentleman on the far left is either Jimmy Buffet, Wilfred Brimley or Warren Buffet Brimley (w/ the beetus).

"HOLY SHIT, WHERE? THE ONLY THING I CAN FIND BACK HERE IS ALREADY CHEWED SOY JOY BARS."

"We rented the camper for our friend's bachelor party weekend," this guy told me. It costs $450 a day. They drove from Arizona and spent $800 on gas on the trip here. When I asked about the wildest thing they'd done all weekend, he replied that the bachelor drank a shot of a girl's vomit the night before. "Do you think his fiancé would be upset by that?" I asked. He replied that she probably wouldn't mind, because she's "pretty chill."

A bunch of horrible military dudes are camping 500 feet from us, eventually one of them stumbled over to our car. His shirt says MIDGET HOOKERS CHARGE HALF THE PRICE. He told us that he was stationed in Bremerton and that "Seattle is stupid because there aren't any trees there." Eventually he walked away, tried to enter a tent that wasn't his and was told to leave by the girls sleeping inside. Soon after he walked back to his truck, blasted "Wild Side" by Motley Crue and then got into an argument with an Asian girl, who he repeatedly and loudly called the N-word. From where I was standing, they seemed to be spitting on each other. One of us notified parking lot security that he and his group were awful humans, but their response was that they were in the military and were fighting for our freedom. I wondered to myself how these people would respond to the choir preaching racism discussions that I often see on Facebook and in the Stranger, but then my brain got bored and I opted to jam a fistful of Babybel cheese into my mouth.

While watching tUnE-yArDs yesterday, I overheard a guy and a girl complaining that Merrill Garbus reminded them too much of Kimya Dawson. While I didn't see their point, aside from both being human + female, they then spent the remainder of the set complaining about Kimya Dawson's "wacky childish aesthetic." Later, I spotted L. Mizell wearing some a pair of Kimya Dawson socks.

I think that Bree or Emily are going to re-cap the tUnE-yArDs show, which was the most mesmerizing thing I've seen all weekend. The crowd was rapt for every second.

Last year this image gave the outerweb a good chuckle, this girl went and put it on her body forever. Her name is Jasmine, she's from Alberta, and she obviously rules.

I really like bands that have put some thought into their aesthetic...it makes for a more fun show when they actually look like they belong in the same room, not like they got pulled off the street and got thrown up on stage together. The Dum Dum Girls have a black monochrome uniform that looks like this:

Kyle Johnson

Dum Dum Girls

Kyle Johnson

Dum Dum Girls

Kyle Johnson

Dum Dum Girls

They played a really great set, and also have a new bass player in the band since the last time I saw them...their previous bassist Bambi (she was the sole ginger in the group) recently left to front a new project called Cheap Curls that is gonna be releasing a 7" on Art Fag soon.

Most Beautiful Hair Award: Kurt Vile
When I approached the Bigfoot Stage at 4:15pm, it became pretty clear to me that Kurt Vile and the Violators have the most beautiful hair of the whole festival. I would have asked them what conditioner they used to make it look so fantastic, but I'm sure it's a hesher beauty secret they would never share with me.

Kyle Johnson

Most Beautiful Hair Award

The media tent at every music festival I've attended is usually filled with snacks, computer cords, cans of Red Bull and bulky ego blog writers (usually in a huff) talkin' hard (+ loud!) about music opinions. If you ever find yourself in such a place, eavesdrop on the live interviews if you can. They're usually a wonderful roller coaster ride of embarrassing and offensive. Yesterday I heard a man interviewing Jack White's drummer, Daru Jones. Unfortunately I didn't get to hear the whole thing, but I did hear the interviewer assure Jones that he was a better drummer than Meg White, and found that his use of a bigger drum set was "refreshing" and was taking White's music to "another level." Then the interviewer asked Jones to explain Jack White's sound, and then asked Jones to list his personal influences. After a wonderful reply which included Christian Marclay, Yoshimi P-We and Max Roach, the interviewer informed Jones that the recorder hadn't recorded the interview. He then curtly excused himself, saying that he had to catch the Dry the River set over at the Esurance Yeti stage. He actually said, "Esurance Yeti stage."

"What's an IP address?"

There's an older woman who shoots photos for Getty Images who curses at her computer for loading things slowly. She has most of her things splayed out on a table that can fit three people. She left it all there and wandered away to stand in line to buy corn dogs while smoking Kool cigarettes. I moved some of her things to a corner of the table while she was gone and she had an ultra spazz when she returned. She informed me that she'd been "working Sasquatch" longer than anybody else and that the table was reserved for her. I calmly explained to her that she was wrong and that she should take a "megapixel hike." She lumbered over to a security guard and explained that I had "stolen her table." He said that tables couldn't be reserved. She then let him know that she was the most important at the music festival. He then opened a bag of BBQ Popchips and ate them all in one bite. Popchips are pretty good when they're free!

Also heard in the media tent:

"The way that tUnE-yArDs juxtaposes sounds is just amazing."
"I'm here blogging for Pitchfork, but I'm really sick of the direction they're taking. I'm going to start my own blog."
"Is Hey Marseilles the band that choked that sound guy?"
"White people who listen to the Roots have no idea that the Roots hate white people."

PEOPLE = OH BROTHER.

Charles Bradley

For me, the second day of Sasquatch felt like a series of thematic mini-festivals blurred into one very long Saturday. On the "soul revival" train, Pickwick looked and sounded incredibly comfortable warming up the imposing main stage. Galen Disston and company's course-correction from indie-fold to neo-soul continues to pay dividends; seeming more self-assured and magnetic with each successive show and entirely worthy openers for screaming eagle of soul / former James Brown impersonator / documentary film subject Charles Bradley, who's rightfully basking in the glow of his relatively-recent ascent to adoration.

Alabama Shakes

Later, bridging th gap into deeply-felt roots rock, Alabama Shakes staked a claim on most compelling set of the day. Brittany Howard's vocals are a wonderland of impeccably coordinated contrasts — from delicate highs to deeply powerful lows. The band seems at exactly the right place for a well-timed NPR nudge to make them to go-to album to buy when stumped for a gift for just about any music fan on your shopping list. Their set sort of opened the "powerful women of rock" section of the day, which included sexy monodrone from Dum Dum Girls, stadium-filling new material from Metric, proto-futuristic rhymes from Thee Satisfaction, the richly textural live looping theatrics of tUnE-yArDs, and culminating with the darkly angelic powerhouse Annie Clark of St. Vincent whose "Cruel" continues to dig in its hooks with every listen.

Jack White

Headlining the mainstage, Jack White looked like someone that Tim Burton might invent if he didn't already exist. Sideburn islands and a seemingly invented accent were the only distractions from the manic parade of new solo material woven into a deep and satisfying back catalog of singalong hits from the Raconteurs and White Stripes eras. At the top of the hill, the Roots had the task of keeping the crowd up past midnight. Before making a run for the border, we stayed only through their first few songs of their set, which opened with a cover of the Beastie Boys origin myth as tribute to MCA.

Great Branding, Honda.

Childish Gambino

Stray observations

Even at an indie rock festival, people go nuts for television personalities. The Portlandia crew packed the Banana Shack with adoring fans who delighted at Fred and Carrie's droll slideshows and party games. Similarly, people flocked to hear Donald Glover's rap personality Childish Gambino on the mainstage even though he's a far better at playing a geeky ex-jock community college student than rapper.

Canadian pride remains in full effect at this event, with conspicuous displays of nationalism on display at the Yeti stage for Or the Whale

The Yeti, in general, was one of the more pleasant spots for recharging with the always-enchanting sparkle pop from Craft Spells among the day's high points.

Despite being horribly named, the tiny Maine stage drew the most enthusiastic crowds, with northwest hiphop devotees swarming the barricade-free stage to get up close and maybe too personal during sets from Fatal Lucciauno and Sol.

"Secret shows" are trending: on Friday Macklemore apparently did an impromptu performance above the mainstage; on Saturday ReignWolf played a few songs on the roof of the Easy Street Records.

I'm not usually at the front of the outrage brigade when kids stick a few neon feathers in their hair or slap on a little face paint, but Honda's campaign to get people to photograph themselves (for souvenier bandanas) in native american and other culturally insensitive costumes as a way of drawing people to take a look at their cars was among the grossest things I've seen at any festival. I can't imagine which ad wizard green lit this year's particularly appalling campaign.
