Mountain Dew Removes, (Sort of) Apologizes for Offensive Commercial

Mountain Dew has removed the offensive commercial, which featured and was developed by Odd Future's Tyler, the Creator, but they don't offer up much more than an "Oops, sorry!" in response to the backlash:

Hey guys - made a big mistake we've removed the offensive video from all our channels. #fail
— Mountain Dew® (@mtn_dew) May 1, 2013

On their website they also note that Tyler, the Creator has removed the commercial from his channels. Tyler doesn't agree that the ad needed to be pulled, though. In an interview with Billboard.com he says:

What was the initial idea for the Mountain Dew ads?

Tyler, the Creator: It was just a goat who liked Mountain Dew. He wanted more. The waitress lady got hurt. He got pulled over by the cops, and the lady points out the goat [in the line-up], who obviously attacked her because of the Mountain Dew. And that's it.

I guess people are claiming that it's racist, which... you know, that wasn't even portrayed in that commercial, there's no type of hate being portrayed in that work of art at all — which I'm confused by. But this older black dude, Dr. Boyce Watkins, I guess he found it racist because I was portraying stereotypes, which is ridiculous because, one, all of those dudes [in the line-up] are my friends. Two, they're all basically in their own clothes. It was originally supposed to be just two dudes, but Garrett from Trash Talk came with his friend and other people had showed up, so I just put all of them in that line-up, if you really wanna know the truth. Three, no [commenters] saw that commercial and said, this is racist. Everyone either said, “Wow, this is ridiculous, it's a goat talking,” or they said, “Wow, this is the dumbest, why would they even make this?” So for [Watkins] to nitpick and notice that, clearly shows his state of mind is on some other sh— that I can't comprehend, for him to actually sit there and for him to notice that it's all blacks [in the lineup]. That wasn't my intention.

Read the full interview here. He's either a complete idiot who's oblivious to (or in denial of) the world that exists outside his bubble, or (as some have argued) he's knows exactly what he's doing and he's just very good at not ever breaking away from a very intentional and controversial persona. (I'm convinced it's the former.)

[ Comment on this story ]

Voice your support for the Seattle Drum School by contacting the Department of Planning and Development at 684-8600. Seattle Drum School also recommends you e-mail Councilman Nick Licata at Nick.Licata@seattle.gov.

TRENT MOORMAN

Kristy and Steve Smith

Since 1986, Seattle Drum School has been a beacon of percussion and musical instruction for people of all ages and skill sets. The North Seattle and Georgetown locations are absolute assets to our city. Combined, they have roughly 600 students, 40 teachers, and four administrators. They offer bass, guitar, piano, voice, trumpet, saxophone, trombone, DJ, mandolin, and ukulele lessons, as well as rock-band classes, a Scottish drum corps class, and audio-engineering instruction. During the summer, Seattle Drum School offers camps, and they host all-ages shows and clinics with big-name hitters at their venues the Slab (Georgetown), and the L.A.B. (North Seattle, standing for Little Auditorium in the Back). But all is not rosy right now for the school—the city is threatening their existence. After 25 years of fire inspections with no problems, the Department of Planning and Development has decided to change Seattle Drum School's risk classification to that of a public school. It would force them to install sprinklers, have a seismic assessment and retrofit, and make various other alterations—the cost could be in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, effectively putting them out of business.

DEAR MAYOR MCGINN: Seattle Drum School should be flourishing, not on the verge of being shut down. Mr. Mayor, we cannot let places like Seattle Drum School perish. It's a great, positive place for kids, employing good people. We need music. We need music teachers. We need music taught. Our city and its government should be helping places like this, not threatening them.

Seattle Drum School founder Steve Smith spoke.

What's the latest on the retrofit/sprinkler issue?

A couple of weeks ago, I spoke with an assistant Seattle attorney who handles land-use issues. She was very kind and said she was going to contact her client at the Department of Planning and Development (DPD) to see if there was a way to bring us into compliance without resorting to a lawsuit. So far, I haven't heard back.

After e-chatting with Keith Whiteman from Grave Babies today, I realized that most of our conversation sounded like a scripted advertisement for a fantastic new kitchen device. Here's an excerpt, somewhat edited:

Jannie Mercado

Keith: I'm dying for pho. I know you had some yesterday. You want round two today?

Me: Nah. I had a giant egg sandwich this morning.

Keith: Haha, three eggs?

Me: I think just one. But the English muffin was rather bready.

Keith: Man. That Rollie we used yesterday was so gross. Egg on a stick dog.

Me: WHAT IS ROLLIE?

Keith: It's a breakthrough in egg cooking technology! www.getrollie.com This is a Rollie:

Me: Somebody is going to try to have sex with that egg device!

Keith: Man. It gets pretty hot. I don't know if you want that. And steamy! They'd definitely get some burns.

Me: They can cover it up with foil or something. I can't believe that thing exists! I kind of want an egg tube. Where did you try it?

Keith: They got one here at work. It didn't work as good as the commercial, but just crack an egg into it, stick a hot dog in it and it comes out cooked. The hot dog was kind of lukewarm, but if you nuked it for 30 seconds before you popped it in it would be great. The eggs tasted decent, like microwaved eggs. The idea and propulsion was a bit hard to handle.

Me: Can i quote you on that?

Keith: Oh, sure!

Pictures of the cutting edge technology in action after the jump!

Jannie Mercado

If you find yourself at the Capitol Hill retailer Everyday Music tomorrow morning for the holy occasion known as Record Store Day (4/20/13), you will encounter on the turntables DJ El Toro (Stranger freelancer and KEXP personality Kurt B. Reighley, spinning at 10 am) and DJ Veins (Stranger writer… uh, me, spinning old and new records you probably haven't heard before at 11 am). One thing, though: The flier for the event erroneously lists my affiliation as KEXP. Note: I am not opposed to holding down a slot at KEXP, if KEXP wants me to fill in or anything. Just putting that out there.

Also on the bill at EM are several spiffy local bands, including Tomten, Scriptures, Mystery Ship, King Dude, Steradian, and Pitschouse. Plus: Wheedle's Groove/Family Affair member Robbie Hill, in person and radiating charisma.

More RSD info here. Gird your wallets.

Frankly I'm not sure I could pick a Lady Gaga song out of a mixtape. That's not by design as much as it is pure happenstance. Or maybe it's kind of by design. Still, most of what I hear about her indicates that she's a person of integrity. Example 4,637: She turned down $1 million to perform at a Republican party party during pre-election times in Tampa Bay. Sure, it's not much of a surprise, as she's an outspoken proponent of gay rights, and for her to perform for the GOP would basically make her a total hypocrite. But still, a million fuckin' dollars. I'd have to work for like 40 more years to make that much, which really sucks because I'm already 47.

Via this place

Buzz Feed’s run-down of CDs you see cluttering up used bins everywhere resonates with annoying truth. It made me flash back to my stint as a part-time record-store employee in 2003-2004, during which I'd roll my eyes as yet more copies of the same damn titles would arrive on a nearly daily basis. But the 38 albums in writer Matthew Perpetua's list are far from comprehensive. He left out these ubiquitous discarded discs (which are just a fraction of the deluge):

The Cranberries- Bury the Hatchet
Red Hot Chili Peppers- Blood Sugar Sex Magic
Björk- Homogenic
Beck- Sea Change
Santana- Supernatural
Moby- almost every title, but especially Play and 18
Nine Inch Nails- The Downward Spiral

Even all-time consensus classics like Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, Nirvana’s Nevermind, and John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme appear with some regularity in used bins. Really, anything that was massively popular at some point inevitably seems to end up in the compact-disc cemetery. Anybody have a Celexa?

"Don't make people pay for music, says Amanda Palmer:
Let them. In a passionate talk that begins in her days as a street performer (drop a dollar in the hat for the Eight-Foot Bride!), she examines the new relationship between artist and fan."

Last time we caught up with 50 Cent, he was making mad scrilla macking the ladies on QVC. Today's sighting found Cent at the Daytona 500, trying to mack on FOX's Erin Andrews, who deftly evades his attempt at a kiss on the lips, immediately saying "I gotta go talk to Danica Patrick. Good to see you," and then, as she's backing away and holding the mic like it's a 10-foot-pole, "What are you doing here?" before making a run for it. But it's too late! Cent's lady-seeking sites are set, and, uninvited, he joins the search for Patrick, holding onto the small of Andrews's back as she desperately tries to act like she's not attempting to evade him. Unfortunately, the report is cut short prior any discussion with the intended interviewee, possibly because Cent was on lock and there was no shaking him.

A publicist with Psychopathic Records has just asked me this important question. I don't shop for records nearly enough. WHAT SAY YOU, LINEOUT?

Is there a particular record store in Seattle that could be considered "Juggalo friendly?" A place where Juggalos regularly buy their merch or at least isn't adverse to hanging an ICP poster on the wall? I'm trying to identify indie record stores that are down with the clown. Having been away from the Pacific Northwest since the '90s (I moved to Detroit in '99), I don't even know what Seattle music stores are even around anymore. Got any tips?

Mad Clown Love,

You may have read that Mac Miller and Lord Finesse settled in December over the dispute of Mac's use of Lord Finesse's work. You may have also read everything from ridiculous YouTube comment section reasoning to Mac Miller’s own lawyer's press release. You may feel like one is better than the other, or that the spirit of hiphop is being perverted somehow, but there is a logical explanation for this, which stands outside of your spurious reasoning. Rest at ease.

Lord Finesse isn't owed 10 million dollars by rap’s cutest start up because he's decided to betray the roots of hiphop. US Copyright Law is actually pretty easy to follow and available to digest in many forms over at this website. In addition to the usual FAQ section, they’ve also got pamphlets covering a series of specific subjects, and a series of cartoons for explaining things like copyright infringement to school children. There's also the entire law just sitting there for you to read. I grant you that the sections on sound recordings are incredibly dated, referring to transferring sound via phonograph doesn’t even sound civilized, but the principles of the law do still apply.

It's easiest to first begin with the popular Mac Miller fan defense (no, not the gormless, air-headed defense about the honor of hiphop) which is stated reasonably as:

Lord Finesse never paid Oscar Peterson for his sample of "Dream of You" used on his track "Hip 2 Da Game" either, tho.

This is the first and best argument, which attempts to establish Miller's innocence and show that Lord Finesse is a greedy ’90s monster back from the dead, participating outside the lines of hiphop historical allowances. This argument is, however, wrong.

Here’s why:

Under chapter 3 section 301 of the copyright law of the good ol’ US of A, Oscar Peterson does hold copyright for his work published in 1971 until the year 2067. This does not mean it is not okay for Lord Finesse to have sampled his work in the 1995 single "Hip 2 Da Game" (which appeared on the Awakening album in 1996). Finesse may have simply credited and been given permission by Oscar Peterson to use the sample, the latter of which I doubt. The more likely possibility falls under what’s called a "derivative work" clause (Chapter 1 Section 103), which is defined by the Copyright Office as "A work consisting of editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications, which, as a whole, represent an original work of authorship." That means that for Lord Finesse to take an Oscar Peterson record (Reunion Blues, so good), put it on a turntable, sample three seconds worth of vibraphone from the first five seconds of the track, and loop it, creates an entirely different work than Oscar Peterson’s "Dream Of You," which is called a derivative. Derivative works are copyrighted by their owners like all copyrighted works at the point of creation, no little symbol necessary. You don’t even need to file paperwork to hold copyright over something you've created.

But isn't Mac Miller just doing what Lord Finesse did? Isn't this what hiphop is?

In short, no. Mac Miller used well over a few seconds of the Lord Finesse beat. As a matter of fact, if you listen to "Kool Aid n Frozen Pizza" and "Hip 2 Da Game" side by side, he used the whole goddamn thing. This is a problem because once Lord Finesse created that beat (literally at the moment he created it) he owned the copyright to it. Whether or not Mac Miller made money off the K.I.D.S. mixtape at the time of release is inconsequential. Whether or not Mac Miller indeed credited Lord Finesse with the use of the beat is also inconsequential (I'll get to why in a bit). He would've had to have had permission in writing ahead of time to do so, and since he didn’t "sample" the beat, as is hiphop custom, he set his own song outside of the derivative clause.

Furthermore, there are four factors determining whether a copyright is being infringed upon or simply being made "fair use" of. From my personal favorite, Section 107, you may be doing it wrong, and subject to infringement suit if you haven't considered:

(1)	the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;

Yes, Mac Miller did use this tape, if not this song specifically to launch a commercial career, no he wasn’t teaching kids about Kool-Aid and frozen pizza.

(2)	the nature of the copyrighted work;

Yes, the fact Mac Miller credited it to Lord Finesse when he laid it down showed that he knew it was copyrighted by him (the rest of us knew it too), so it wouldn’t have mattered if he had credited Finesse or not.

(3)	the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole; and

Holy wow. I can't even. He just went ahead and used the whole thing didn't he? That’s not a derivative work AT ALL!

(4)	the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.

This is the kicker, folks, this is the game right here. Either Lord Finesse or his lawyers (or both) are very smart and could smell that blood in the water. They saw that Mac Miller's (and now Dan Bull's, for that matter) use of Lord Finesse's copyrighted work did, in fact, effect the potential market value of Lord Finesse's work. If asked, who would you think made that beat? If you were to go out and purchase an album, would it be more likely that you would now seek out and find Mac Miller's work rather than Lord Finesse's fairly used, copyrighted work? Yes. Mac Miller has significantly affected the potential market value of Lord Finesse's work by using it in his song, to the potential tune of 10 million smithereens. End of story.

Dan Bull’s work is also being ripped from YouTube as fast as it’s being reposted in protest, for the same reason. Despite being a critique of Lord Finesse (which is a completely fair use) he’s rapping over the same beat! Folks, save yourselves some time and get to the source of the problem before you run your mouth.

I don’t care what you say Mac Miller's song is so much better than Lord Finesse's song anyway. You’re stupid you suck, TLDR, GFY, OMG.

Think about this: without Lord Finesse, it's likely that Mac Miller would've gone unrecognized at his tiny label, competing to be heard from Pittsburgh, and behind label mate Wiz Kalifah without a big "mature" sounding beat like that of "Hip 2 Da Game."

The spirit of hiphop is not to steal entire tracks, it's to sample beats with which to rap over, to go out into the community and make art, to dance. Members of the hiphop community are artists just like any other community, their work, whether derivative fair use or completely original, falls under protection of the US Copyright office, and people who infringe upon that work are subject to punishment. This is to protect you, and allow you some semblance of a chance to scratch out a life for yourself with your own creative endeavors. Hiphop is the folk music of a people, a people who know better than to let themselves be ripped off, be knowledgable, beware.

In this week's paper, on the occasion of Easy Street Records' Queen Anne store closing Jan. 18, we're running reminiscences by current and former Easy Street Records employees. We lacked space to include responses from all of the people interviewed, so I'm going to post them on Line Out throughout the next week. I hope this proves to be an entertaining slice of anecdotal history of Seattle's musical ecology.

(By the way, Easy Street QA is selling its used vinyl, CDs, DVDs at 40-percent off. New product is 20-percent off. Today is the last day to get these deals. Yo La Tengo play an in-store at 7 pm. Early arrival is recommended; invasion of personal space is guaranteed. Sunday at 11 am there will be a public auction of various Easy Street furnishings, billboards, and posters.)

SHANE TUTMARC (floor/register/accessories/used-product buyer, 2006-2009; has been living in Nashville since 2010)

Best thing about working at Easy Street QA?
[C]onstantly discovering new music. As an employee, not only was I familiar with everything coming out each week, but I was always constantly digging deeper and deeper into old music—whether it was jump blues, ragtime, gospel, world music, you name it! Which had a major affect on me as an artist, as well. If anyone was curious how I went from a making everything-and-the-kitchen-sink pop records with Dolour to putting out live-in-the studio rootsy rock ’n’ roll with the Traveling Mercies—Easy Street was a key ingredient. And I also have to say that my coworkers were a major bonus. I worked with a really eclectic group of people, who were all very talented in their own area—whether it was sketch comedy, graphic design, photography, songwriting...

Best in-store performance?
I would have to say that my experiences playing Easy Street would have to be my "favorite in-store performances." I first played Easy Street QA in 2003 after the release of my band Dolour's second album, Suburbiac. And then I played there again in 2008 with my family group, the Traveling Mercies supporting our second album, Hey Lazarus! And I played there one more time in 2009 when my first solo record, Shouting at a Silent Sky, was released. Easy Street was always a very supportive place to be.

Craziest or strangest customer encounter?
There was always crazy and strange customers, every single day. In fact, there were times when it felt like they were the only demographic of people that shopped at record stores. But one story that comes to mind was this kid who had just gotten out of jail and must have come straight to Easy Street. He was looking to replace his Insane Clown Posse collection. He kept saying, "But these guys are super underground, you probably don't have them." We had way more ICP in stock than we should have. He left happy.

How do you feel about the store closing?

I am very heartbroken about the Queen Anne store closing. Not only for my own loss, but also for Lower Queen Anne. Easy Street leaving that block is gonna hurt business all around there. Who's gonna leave their neighborhood to go to a Chase Bank, and then stop and get coffee or a slice of pizza?! I know I will have very few reasons to ever hang out in Lower Queen Anne now. This isn't just a reflection of the declining interest in record stores worldwide, I hear 2012 had been a very good year for Easy Street, this is more of a classic George Bailey vs. Mr. Potter situation, with Chase bank literally chasing them out (bad pun!). I will definitely be making more trips to West Seattle on future visits to the Emerald City because Easy Street is a big part of the Seattle experience for me, and I'm glad that shop looks to be sticking around for a long while. Viva La Easy Street!

KURT ALTERITY (used product manager, 2005-2013)
Best thing about working there?
The community.

Best in-store performance?
Macklemore—ON THE ROOF!

Craziest or strangest customer encounter?
Talking with Thurston Moore about noise for 30 minutes before I realized who he was.

How do you feel about the store closing?
Heartbroken.

KEVIN LA TRANCHE (vinyl buyer, off and on 2003-2012)
What was the best thing about working there?
Getting introduced to a ton of great music while hanging out with a bunch of amazing people. Also: first dibs on records!

What was the worst thing about working there?
Not being able to afford all the incredible records I found.

What was the best in-store performance you saw at Easy Street QA?
Toss-up between Dr. Dog and Dungen. CocoRosie was amazing and they drew me a picture, which I still have.

Craziest or strangest customer encounter?
There are too many, but one of my favorites is when someone asked me if he could unseal some records to listen to. When I told him he couldn't, he replied, "You need to get right with the Lord!"

How do you feel about the store closing?
I don't know what to say. It was a huge part of my life, and I'm really sad to see it go…

MACKENZIE MERCER (worked the floor and counter for two years)
What was the best thing about working there?
Being surrounded by people as obsessive about music as yourself. I definitely miss being as up to date on new releases, I have to do more leg work nowadays. Meeting and working with Troy Nelson was a game-changer and highlight for sure. The seeds that would become the Young Evils were plotted and planted behind that counter for some time before we actually got our act together. Had I not worked there, who knows if we'd have met at all! Prior to working at Easy Street, like many of my coworkers, I'm sure, I spent all my time trapped in my room with headphones on, dying to talk to someone else about the records I was currently obsessing over. There’s nothing quite like getting to go to work and do that all day.

What was the best in-store performance you saw at Easy Street QA?
I feel like I have a lot of favorite in-stores because I was a fan of the artist or band, but my fondest memory of an in-store I worked was Record Store Day 2009. We had performances all day from the Moondoggies, Dex Romweber Duo, Wolves in the Throne Room, and Sweet Water. Sweet Water closed out the night and I remember the place was packed. Matt [Vaughan, Easy Street owner] was running around getting ready for them to start and he ran up to me behind the counter urgently inquiring what rock albums were closest at hand. I named off a few and when I landed on the KISS platinum collection he shouted, "Perfect!" He threw on the record, blasting “Strutter” almost as loud as the store sound system would go. I was then given strict instructions to watch for him at the back of the store and begin slowly fading the song down as he began slowly raising the garage door up to reveal the band who would already be playing their first song before the audience could fully see them. I had never even heard Sweet Water before and it was fucking epic. Matt spent the rest of their set moving throughout the crowd, rocking out with everyone, and passing out beers from the fully stocked cooler tucked under his arm. In that moment I felt like I was really part of something special. It wasn't just about selling the records, stocking racks, and ringing people up. It was about creating those kind of magic moments. Right then I realized that Matt’s passion and goal with the store was always about the experience. He wanted our customers to leave there feeling that childlike wonder. To feel like we were all 16 years old again and had just seen our favorite band play at a sold-out arena. He made that happen all the time. Getting to be apart of those in-stores is probably what I will miss the most.

Craziest or strangest customer encounter?
One time I had a woman come in and ask me to show her to the Elliott Smith section. I gladly walked her over and asked if there was a specific record she was looking for. That’s when shit got weird. She went on to explain to me that she was the estranged sister of Elliott's girlfriend at the time of his death. She wanted to look inside all of his albums to find a mailing address to contact anyone who used to work with him to see if they could get her in touch with her sister. I informed her that without purchasing the albums she couldn't just unwrap all of them and start looking through the liner notes for addresses. She began to cry her eyes out and go into this whole diatribe about how Elliott was more family to her than anyone else she'd ever known and about how his long battle with cancer which ultimately led to his death (WTF?) had really torn her and her sister apart. I quickly plotted my exit, wished her luck, and snuck away.

How do you feel about the store closing?
Right now it’s hard for me to believe it’s real. I honestly can't imagine driving in to lower Queen Anne and not seeing that big sign in the parking lot spinning around. Not seeing Glenn's huge murals on the side of that building. Not being able to stumble in after one too many drinks at Solo to drunkenly buy that record I already have a copy of at home. Not being able to pop in the back room to use the bathroom because I was in the neighborhood and I had to go.

There’s nothing quite like the relationships I formed there and the impact it had on the person I am today. It will most likely be the only job where I cried when I punched my time card for the last time (what a sissy). We all know record stores are a dying breed. So many cities have had to say goodbye to some amazing stores run by some amazing people. Easy Street West Seattle will go on, but it should absolutely be another reminder for us all to shop local, support our independent record stores, and show them some love for all the love they bring to us.

It's been quite a long time since the last SCGW, there hasn't been much to report as the market has been like a puddle under a black hole sun. There was speculation that the post holiday season would see teens selling family grunge artifacts to buy lids of now legal weed, but that hasn't proven to be true. Analysts advise holding on to your grunge until 2015, when the mid-1990s revival is expected to be in full swing.

The awful news is, Easy Street Records is ceasing operations at its Queen Anne branch on Jan. 18 (Yo La Tengo are playing an in-store that evening; you may want to determine your camping-out strategy soon). The consoling news is, the store is offering a 15-percent discount on everything in the place except ES-related merchandise. Last night, I picked up nine pieces of vinyl—including LPs by the Red Krayola, Chris Forsyth, Naked on the Vague, and Jan Hammer—and two used Mouse on Mars CDs for under a Benjamin. There is a possibility that the discount rate will jump to 20 or 25 percent as the closing date approaches.

This news crept out over the holiday break, when almost no one is paying attention to the news:

The world's biggest recording companies have been stripped of two billion YouTube hits after the website cracked down on alleged 'fake' and 'dead' views.

Universal, home of Rihanna, Nicki Minaj and Justin Bieber, lost a total of one billion views in the video site’s biggest ever crackdown on its viewing figures.

Sony was second hardest hit, with the label behind such stars as Alicia Keys, Rita Ora and Labrinth losing more than 850million views in a single day.

But the labels' defense is downright wacky: "Universal acknowledged its drop in views, but told the Daily Dot its channel had been mostly dormant since it shifted its focus to Vevo, which it founded in 2009 together with Sony Music, Abu Dhabi Media Company, and E1 Entertainment."

You know, 'cause everybody watches Vevo. That's how come they don't even let Quantcast—who estimates they're bouncing around at about 750K views a month—reliably measure their stuff. Really, they say, no one is watching YouTube anymore.

[ Comment on this story ]

Easy Street Records to Close Queen Anne Store Jan. 18

Easy Street Records' Queen Anne location will be closing Jan. 18 (the West Seattle branch remains open and in fact recently signed a 15-year lease). Owner Matt Vaughan posted the sad news on the store's website this morning. Here's an excerpt from Vaughan's announcement:

After fulfilling our 10-year lease, our landlord was looking for another long-term lease. We felt this might be risky, particularly with the current economic landscape of retail and some changes that had affected the neighborhood. Furthermore, the rent that the landlord was looking for was significantly more than what we had been paying. Initially, we were fortunate in negotiating a couple one-year leases. That is what kept us here these last couple of years.

The new tenant, Chase Bank, will take possession of 20 Mercer St on Jan 21. We thank our committed customers, this beautiful neighborhood, our fellow merchants and neighbors, and all of the music lovers and musicians that supported Easy Street Records at this location. We will miss all of you and cherish the memories forever.

Easy Street's QA store had slipped a bit in its stocking of adventurous releases over the last year-and-a-half when it let go of super-knowledgeable employees Jefferson Petrey and Chris Bendix and tightened its spending budget, but it still had one of the city's best-curated electronic-music sections and music-magazine racks, and its used-vinyl bins always yield great finds. This is a big loss for music fans.

[ Comment on this story ]

One of Seattle's most intelligently curated record stores, Wall of Sound (along with its space-sharing tenant, the excellent Spine and Crown Books), is going to have to move operations by June, when the edifice (on Pine between Bellevue and Melrose) in which it's housed will be repurposed into a seven-story building. There's been some confusion about Wall of Sound's status, moving into 2013. Owners Jeffery Taylor and Michael Ohlenroth have issued a statement to clarify matters.

There has been some confusion regarding our pending move to a new location and we'd like to clear it up for everyone that is concerned. We will begin to look for a new space in January 2013 (it's possible we could remain here until the summer.) We will remain OPEN FOR BUSINESS AS USUAL at our current location until we find a new space. When we DO find that awesome new spot we will be sure to tell you all about it. We hope to only be closed for a day or two while we complete the move to wherever our wonderful new place may be. WE ARE HERE - WE ARE OPEN - COME BUY A RECORD!

Check out an in-store performance by R. Stevie Moore at Wall of Sound from 2011 after the jump.

WTF?" title="The ~!@#$%^ Crusaders get their own card, but not Alice Coltrane?! WTF?

This weekend while digging for records at Portland’s Crossroads mega-store, I noticed that one of the vendors had filed Alice Coltrane’s LPs in the JOHN COLTRANE section. What kind of bullshit is this? Right—sexist bullshit.

Any cultured individual should know that the late Alice Coltrane deserves not only her own section in a goddamn record shop, but a fucking shrine. Her catalog vibrates with some of the most spiritually elevated and sonically fascinating astral jazz ever made. Sure, her husband influenced her music, as he did many other musicians', but Ms. Coltrane went on to become her own very special artistic force. Show the woman some respect, music retailers—and don’t even think of putting her stuff in MISC JAZZ C, either. (Note: Crossroads consists of several merchants’ wares, so this is not a blanket condemnation of Crossroads, but merely one of its vendors. Also, several record stores have been guilty of this practice in my many years of scouring them. They know who they are and they should hang their heads in shame.)

This marginalizing of Alice Coltrane needs to stop. Do record-store owners file Yoko Ono’s works with John Lennon’s? (You know, I think they do, sometimes, the bastards.) Do Carla Bley’s get slotted in with Paul Bley’s? Boss Hog’s with Jon Spencer Blues Explosion's? Come on, music-emporium people, sort it out (literally).

Vera Project Is Offering a Class on Music Journalism

Do you have a yearning for a life of poverty, opprobrium, and a ceaseless bombardment of emails from publicists? Do you want to express meaningful thoughts about sound waves organized into something scientists call "music"? Do you desire to coax words out of recalcitrant, unreliable musicians with dubious gifts of gab and then shape said words into "features"? Do you want to go to live shows 5 times a week, month after month, year after year, until you've lost 37 percent of your hearing? If you answered "yes" to these questions, then you probably would enjoy a career as a music journalist. Vera Project may be able to help you realize your ambitions.

(I jest, although there's a grain of truth in the above paragraph. I've been a music journalist for 30 years and it unquestionably can be very fulfilling. It can also be a tedious grind. Whatever you do, don't get into this business unless you have an unquenchable hunger and love for music and writing. You probably ain't gonna get rich at it.)

The Vera course—which happens on Mondays from Jan. 28-March 4, 2013—goes something like this:

This comprehensive new 6-class course focuses on practical musical journalism. Through readings, lectures, assignments and discussions, students will explore the history of popular music journalism, learn the craft of writing and begin developing the tools needed for a career writing about music and the arts.

Last semester's class was taught by City Arts Magazine editor Mark Baumgarten. Contacted by email, he elaborated, "The fall class was a pilot to test a few things out. This class will (fingers crossed) be larger and the syllabus will be refined. There will also be a journal published at the end of this session with works written by participants in both the fall and winter sessions. I'm planning on having guest journalists in each class." [Disclosure: Baumgarten kindly invited me to speak to his class, which I did.]

There you go, aspiring Lester Bangses and Ann Powerses. More info here.

[ Comment on this story ]

Innovative Seattle music service ZIIBRA has announced its partnership with Fin Records (home to J. Pinder and Gabriel Mintz) and released new albums from STAG and Naomi Wachira this week.

Local group STAG play mercifully masculine pop rock in the vein of Matthew Sweet and Cowboy Mouth, all witty lyrics and wicked guitar work. It'll be worth it to go over to ZIIBRA and throw down a bid to save your rocking soul. Check out their latest chant (also their album title) "Chameleons" here and revel in some good rock and roll.

And check out their video for "Don't Lead With Your Heart" below:

There were a bunch of things that were cool about this year's Black Friday Record Store Day: the official site had a bunch of sweet special releases,Kill Rock Stars offered discounts and a free Elliot Smith CD with record purchases and Onto Entertainment is offering a big gift pack if you post a photo of your vinyl haul from the day and next week onto their Facebook page.

But when it comes down to it, Black Friday carries awful connotations of big chain stores and people getting trampled outside Walmart every year. BUT, you can always catch Small Business Saturday! Supporting small businesses (LIKE YOUR LOCAL INDEPENDENT RECORD STORES!) is wildly important: for every $100 spent at your local business, $68 goes back to the community. Using the tag #Smallbizsaturday and instagram/tweeting your purchases promotes independent business' and helps the trend grow. And hey, it's less evil than Black Friday, so you can feel better about taking part in the consumerist feeding frenzy. Shop/rock on!

You know what I don't like? Ominous corporations and riot-like surging mobs. You know what I do like? Small businesses that genuinely care about their customers. My suggestion is to take your Black Friday feet to Capitol Hill where you can get crazy deals like 25% off one regularly priced item at Red Light Vintage, guitar/acoustic/bass set-up gift certificates discounted to $60/$70/$75 at High Voltage Music Store, and 10% off your entire purchase at Wall of Sound. Pick up the Shop Local - Shop The Hill leaflet around town or check out Capitolhillseattle.com/shopthehill for a list of local merchants and get great deals on your holiday shopping November 23rd-25th!

Himanshu Suri, godfather of Greedhead Music and one part of Das Racist has released his latest mixtape Wild Water Kingdom to quite the twitter flurry, (twitterpation?), and it features two beats from local hero Keyboard Kid. One is a freestyle track and the other is the previously released "Let It Go".

While his last mixtape was pretty much a showcase for childhood chum and producer pal Mike Finito (and a good one at that), this tape features production from some of the freshest, if not the newest and bestest faces in hip hop: Keyboard Kid's beats hold their own in the lineup, keeping company with Harry Fraud, Steel Tipped Dove, and Le1f, and comes just before a destructively beautiful cut-up of Echo and The Bunnymen's "Killing Moon" by news-to-my-ears Yorissey of BLKHRTS (Denver indie goth hip hop?!).

Keyboard Kid is not the first Seattle artist called upon for support from the Das Racist camp. Jazz drummer Kassa Overall (now a Brooklynite) had a hand in the production of Das Racist's unforgettable breakout mixtapes Sit Down Man, and Shut Up Dude, and is rumored to be working on an upcoming collaboration with Kool A.D. to be titled Coffee and Cigarettes.
