Vampire Weekend @ Stubb's

After four days of braving the hustle of a city under siege by music fans—with their invented economies of meaningless trinkets and oversubscribed RSVP lists, abundant scarcity, and constant crowding—all the while sticking to seeing (mostly) new (to me) bands, I have to admit to (convincing myself of) a sense of relief at not having schemed my way into one of Saturday night's last-minute ultra-mega superstar closing night parties. Instead of seeing three hours of Prince, Justin Timberlake dressing down, the latest iteration of the Smashing Pumpkins, Macklemore, and Fall Out Boy performing at the pleasure of Perez Hilton, keeping an ear to the ground to wherever Kanye West might or might not be parachuting in (allegedly during French Montana's Fader Fort set), I followed my heart to see Vampire Weekend close out SXSW in the big backyard of Stubb's B.B.Q.

Losing the keys to my backyard East Austin rental cottage found me spending the previous night (briefly) replicating Travis Ritter's 2012 adventures in temporary SXSW homelessness—cycling around town to retrace my steps and haunting the wonderful 24 Diner—so I was more than a little excited to hand over my sleep-deprived brain to the comforts of a known commodity with a side of Shiner Bock. I've seen the band maybe a dozen times on stages large and small and have yet to see them put on anything but a great show. Watching them continue this trend, busting out the parade of all the old crowd-pleasing favorites ("Oxford Comma," "Cousins," "California English," "Campus," "Horchata") while trying out three new songs (including "Diane Young," the first single from Modern Vampires of the City, which drops today) on the crowd, it strikes me that just being a really good band of technically exceptional performers who write approximately innovative yet still very pleasant music with short-storylike lyrics that nevertheless often motivate lots of people to dance and sing along is kind of a rare delightful commodity. And bless them for keeping weirdly moody gorgeous "I Think Ur a Contra" right there in the encore along with traditional get-the-eff-out-of-here closer "Walcott."

On the subject of staggering proficiency and sheer stage magnetism: they were well paired with openers HAIM. The Los Angeles sister act unleashed a treasury of great rock and roll faces while (each) singing, drumming, and playing guitar as if performing their own exorcisms. Wild, engaging, and referential without being derivative (as above), they may have been my favorite new band of the week. I knew nothing about them before last night, but can't wait to hear more.

Earlier in the day, I swung by much-beloved now-closed Austin club Emo's, which Brooklyn Vegan had temporarily resurrected for their showcases. Say what you will about the quality of comments on their blog, but the people in attendance, perhaps sated by free nachos and coconut water, were among the best-behaved audiences I encountered: Austra's glorious triple operatic harmonies over double synths and live drums was maybe the first show I saw all week where everyone in my immediate vicinity was too transfixed on the performance to strike up an inane conversation or shove their way through the crowd for a beer, or anything even borderline impolite. (Often during the course of this music marathon I found myself wondering whether there's any other entertainment where blatantly ignoring the show is deemed as apparently socially acceptable.) I stuck around long enough to catch a bit of Unknown Mortal Orchestra and eternally-fun Sub Pop act King Tuff. During all three sets, I'm pretty sure that tiny flakes of the building were crumbling loose.

Back at the Fader's railroad-adjacent Converse-presented (contractual obligation) East Austin fortress, Earl Sweatshirt, the once "lost" Odd Future child-prodigy, deftly dispatched lyrics with contained bravado to an always at-capacity crowd while Flying Lotus acted as DJ. Across the dusty alley, Ray Ban teamed with Boiler Room to turn an old warehouse into a sensory overload chamber—video screens covering half the walls and an in-the-round setup that placed performers on a platform in the middle of the cavernous space. I showed up hoping to see a bit of Mount Kimbie, but found Schlomo instead, due to a scheduling shuffle induced by Chief Keef's just not showing up. I sort of wish that the audiovisuals and vast crowds (in great part, refugees seeking the next fix after Fader's apparently surprise-guest-enhanced French Montana finale) hadn't sent me fleeing to Rio Rita's for relief: the Twitternet suggests that before Bauer came to Harlem Shake everyone one more time, Death Grips played a set that included Zach Hill Skyping-in drums from a remote location.

But, I guess that missing two thousand things to see a handful of others, including a band that you love, and— afterwards while grabbing your bike—getting to serendipitously discover that Delorean is a super-fun Spanish dance rock band that inspires crowdsurfing and patio parties, and not a sleepy Northwest outfit, makes the whole nonsense of occasionally loathsome crowds, huge piles of cash thrown into marketing and brand awareness (this morning, I noticed the absurdity of Spotify re-painting the cafe they took over for the week back from glowing green to a more sedate color and realized that's probably among the tinier expenditures of the festival), and over-exhaustion worth the trip? Plus, I've heard that the backlash was better last year anyway. It's definitely enough to make me think that I'll be tempted to return. After several naps.

(Some more photos, after the jump.)

Brooklyn Vegan showcase: Austra, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, King Tuff

Austra @ Brooklyn Vegan

Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ Brooklyn Vegan

Unknown Mortal Orchestra @ Brooklyn Vegan

King Tuff @ Brooklyn Vegan

King Tuff @ Brooklyn Vegan

Rum, Ironic Hats, and Seattle Bands: an Austin Update

EDS NOTE: My intern Katie Martin is in Austin! Eating all the tacos I should be eating! Got any hot Texas tips for her? -Emily Nokes

You guys! I’m in Austin for SXSW right now! It’s 80 degrees and I am wearing a Hawaiian button up and I’m sure that you’re all shaking your fists at those cloudy heavens, cursing my name. My boyfriend and his “business partner” are managing a couple showcases down here for Castle Face Records, Dolce Vita shoes, and Sailor Jerry’s. I’ve never been to Texas (save the one time I went to Richland when I was thirteen and it sucked because everything sucks when you’re thirteen) and so far it just seems like Seattle in the summertime—everyone wearing attemptedly nonchalant yet obviously carefully-curated sleeveless band tees and messed up sneakers. The biggest difference is that they call Rainier “Lone Star” down here for some reason.

Seattle’s own Night Beats, the Pharmacy, and CMRTYZ the Band played the Sailor Jerry showcase last night at Gypsy Lounge and rocked the ironic mini baseball caps right off of everyone’s heads! It was refreshing to see some hometown vibes amongst so many strangers and reminded me just how spoiled we are in Seattle.

[Insert hella shitty phone pic of Pharmacy] [The phone pic was too hella shitty to insert. Just imagine it and you're better off. -ED]

In other news: it turns out that you can learn to like rum again when your wristband entitles you to as much of it as you want (no one is more surprised than me)! It also turns out that when you see someone you know in an unfamiliar city, you hug them without hesitation even if you would never hug them back home.

CMRTYZ/Castle Face showcase is today at Gypsy Lounge, featuring a gaggle of Seattle bands (PONY TIME! MTNS! STICKERS! PHARMACY! NIGHT BEATS!). Also: Thee Oh Sees! The Mallard! Blasted Canyons! Starts at 8pm. Free. Come and hang if you're in Austin and reading Line Out for some reason! King Tuff is playing the daytime show right before in the same location so it's a win, win, winwinwin!

SXSW: endurance & reincarnation

Stevie Nicks takes a bow

Perhaps my favorite thing that happened yesterday at South by Southwest was when Stevie Nicks spent a good five minutes just recounting, in intricate detail, the major plot points of Joe Wright's film adaptation of Anna Karenina. This was in response to a question from Ann Powers, I think, about her songwriting inspiration and process, and was only one of many fascinating digressions in an hourlong afternoon interview that included a glimpse into her entry into Fleetwood Mac, the role of women in rock music (and her general outrage at a sense of modern-day setbacks for women), and negotiating the dynamics of taking breaks from a band to pursue a solo career. Other fun facts: she really loves Beauty and the Beast both the Jean Cocteau and television version) and always wanted/wants to be a witch for Halloween.

My second favorite thing from yesterday was probably her duet with Dave Grohl at Stubb's as part of the his Sound City Players marathon. The delicate stripped-down acoustic version of "Landslide" almost quieted all of the inane side conversations in the audience for the first time in the evening. The follow-up, "Gold Dust Woman", Nicks fully witching out with the all-star band was a highlights condender, too. The whole event felt like an endurance contest for Grohl, who was onstage throughout the variety show rock lottery that included Alain Johannes, John Fogerty, Chris Goss (Masters of Reality), Brad Wilk (Rage Against the Machine, drums), Pat Smear, Taylor Hawkins (Foo Fighters, drums), as well as Fear's Lee Ving (who, earlier in day, Dave credited for his entire music career). By the time I left — nearly three hours into the rockistest event of all time — Rick Springfield had joined the crowd. With three hours left until curfew, they showed no signs of slowing down.

Snoop LION

Elsewhere, the fire marshall has Viceland on near lockdown for Snoop Dogg's "reincarnation" as Snoop Lion. Despite the reboot, his fashion changes have been more gradual. I could only peek through a side door over the shoulder of an increasingly frustrated bouncer, but it looked like he was wearing approximately the same outfit as when he played Coachella last year with Dre and Hologram Tupac (RIP). As for the sound, drop a reggae beat under "Gin and Juice" and you get the idea. People ate it up (along with the piles of free drinks).

Tegan & Sara

A more interesting, if less dramatic, re-invention was also playing out at the Austin Music Hall where Tegan and Sara were transitioning out of folksly singer-songwriting twin sisters to amazing pop monsters (via working with producer Greg Kurstin for this year's incredibly catchy Heartthrob). Having faced the assaults of a particularly invasive fire ant and staying up far past their usual bedtime, it was their end of their SXSW tour. Still, they challenged the crowd to stick around, holding off on playing party anthem "Closer" until the end of their set.

After that, I cycled back to the mess of Sixth Street, dodging bros getting tasered to catch my most favorite Swedish heartthrobs Shout Out Louds who were closing out the Merge showcase at the Parish. Like everyone else here, they seem to be playing a thousand shows, yet I keep finding it difficult to catch more than a few songs in this ongoing citywide treasure hunt.

A few more photos after the jump.

EDS NOTE: Josh Bis is down in Tejas! If you're like me, you're lamenting the
fact that you're not also there, watching a million bands in the sunny-sunny sunshine... What should he go see? Tell him in the comments! —Kelly O

I know that there are dozens of Seattle bands hustling around town, but let me know in the comments if there's something absolutely unmissable that I might have overlooked or tweet at me if you want to catch up to talk taco tips. —Josh

Café Tacvba at Stubb's

By the time I arrived in Austin last night, I'm pretty sure that Tardar Sauce had packed up his disapproving looks and Google Glasses to skip town with the rest of the moneyed Interactive set. Instead, the makeshift pedestrian mall downtown was already teeming with musicians, fans, and other hangers on in search of a[nother] free drink or tracking down the latest rumored ultra-last-minute surprise appearance. Apparently kids started camping outside the Myspace event based on a incorrect reading of a year-old Daft Punk prophesy.

Not that I was immune to the internal battle between herd mentality and seeking out flashy schedule additions. An e-mail from Dave Segal sent me chasing down an early, recently announced, Iggy and the Stooges performance at the Mohawk patio. Thousands of other people got the same memo, resulting in a city block transformed into one of those meditation labyrinths, hopeful attendees snaking around in an loopy yet orderly line governed only by the imaginations of the well-meaning volunteers giving it structure and providing hope that we might eventually be admitted. Instead, an hour behind two chain smoking Germans (whose only recognizable words included "Vampire", "Weekend", and "Stooges") passed with the line advancing only through attrition. Eventually, as Japandroids closed out their set, Iggy Pop parted the crowd with a white van, jumped out, waved to the fans outside, shed his shirt, and dashed through the back door and onto the stage.

Though plenty of fans turned street into a muffled listening party, I stayed outside for only a few songs and moved down the block to Stubbs, finding that I'd missed most of Nick Cave's set at the NPR showcase. At this point, I realize that SXSW is like a musical theme park except that sometimes you get to the end of the long line only to find out that the roller coaster has disappeared. Though the tech crowd at this conference long ago coined #fomo to describe the "fear" of missing out; the thousands of shows and hundreds of parties (all rsvp-able with a single click) pretty much insure the "fact" of failing to see even a fraction of the buzzworthy events playing a constant tug of war with your agenda.

Nevertheless, serendipity being the buzzword of the festival, I stuck around to see Mexico's Café Tacvba play a rollicking set that someone near me described as the perfect fusion of polka and ska to rows of screaming fans. They closed with some synchronized boy-band level dance moves and made way for the Yeah Yeah Yeahs who debuted a few songs from their upcoming album ("Mosquito") into a mix that included plenty of the hits ("Y Control", "Gold Lion", "Zero", "Maps"), Karen O presiding over the crowd in a brightly embroidered and studded costume.

Rather than lingering in the BBQ pit for Alt-J, I faced the streets and yet another surprisingly long line at Red 7 to find that synthy Glaswegians CHVRCHES were far less undiscovered than I'd imagined. Despite their album not coming out until much later this year — they may have said September — the strength of last year's "the Mother We Share" delivered an overflow crowd who were hanging on every note. Down the street, New Orleans's Hurray for the Riff Raff brought affecting americana to the base of a stairwell at the back of a bar and supergroup Diving Fits brought all of the the electro-intensity, searing vocals, and guitar heroics to a foggy neon-colored set that you'd expect from a fusion of Dan Boeckner (Handsome Furs, Wolf Parade) and Britt Daniel (Spoon).

This morning I woke up in time to catch Dave Grohl give a keynote address to a standing-room-only ballroom at the Convention Center. The pun-filled talk centered around the inspirational power of music in his life, reflected his intense desire for control (at one point, demonstrating his childhood primitive multi-track recording technique live onstage), recounting Nirvana's explosive trajectory and the cathartic birth of Foo Fighters, and arguing for the primacy of the artist. Throughout, one got the sense that he thought that punk rock ("ethically suffocating") was anything but bullshit.

By now, it's early afternoon and about a hundred events are calling: every time I start to look at the schedules, my head gets fuzzy, but I think that my main goal for the night is to witness what happens when Snoop Dogg transforms into Snoop Lion and/or to see the supergroup that forms from Dave Grohl, Stevie Nicks, and all of their friends. Aside from that, I know that there are dozens of Seattle bands hustling around town, but let me know in the comments if there's something absolutely unmissable that I might have overlooked or tweet at me if you want to catch up to talk taco tips.

SxSeattle is a send-off party for some musicians who are playing Austin, Texas' SXSW festival this year. On March 5 at Neumos, Lemolo, OCnotes, Spac3man, and Seacats will play a show, and all proceeds will go to the artists to help them get to SXSW and maybe eat and drink some stuff while they're there.

More info about the artists after the jump. Facebook page here; ticket info here.

LEMOLO
Website: http://lemolomusic.com
Music link: http://lemolomusic.bandcamp.com
Twitter: @lemolomusic
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/lemolomusic

Named one of the “Best New Seattle Bands” by Seattle Magazine, Lemolo is a dream-pop duo comprised of Poulsbo natives Meagan Grandall and Kendra Cox. The girls became instant friends as kayaking instructors on the waters off of Lemolo Shore Drive, where they learned of their shared love for music and adventure. It didn’t take long for them to begin performing together and making their mark in the Seattle music community, creating what Seattle Weekly calls the “most promising expansions on the pretty sounds that have dominated the local zeitgeist.” The energy these two produce live is a “force to be reckoned with,” according to Three Imaginary Girls, and Sound on the Sound adds that Lemolo leaves the listener “aching for more.” Along with receiving generous reviews for their album and live shows, the duo has opened for Sharon Van Etten, toured with The Head and the Heart, performed at Capitol Hill Block Party, City Arts, Music Fest NW, Bumbershoot and the Dave Matthews Band Caravan Festivals, performed on KEXP 90.3 FM and sold out their album release show in only eleven hours. Lemolo released their debut full length album, The Kaleidoscope, on July third, and they look forward to what lies ahead.

OCNOTES
Website: http://ocnotes.net
Music link: http://ocnotes.bandcamp.com
Twitter: @ocnotes
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/alienbootybass

OCnotes, AKA Otis Calvin III, is a Seattle-based producer/singer/MC/multi/multiinstrumentalist (playing 12 instruments at last count)—in the past described in local press as a cross between Madlib and Mos Def, a reductive tag (you'd probably want to add equal parts Daedelus, Dungeon Family and Cody ChesnuTT to get closer to the fact) but a handy enough reference. His solo work and collaborations with such Seattle vibe-setters as THEESatisfaction have made him a darling of the Emerald City's most forward-listening. The latest (and greatest) addition to his already sizable, self-released catalogue is Pre Future Post Modern Love Songs AKA AlienBootyBass. OCnotes' fractured, dreamy brilliance is the most accessible, on this, his brightest and tightest work yet.

SPAC3MAN
Website: http://www.reverbnation.com/spaceman1
Music link: http://www.reverbnation.com/spaceman1
Twitter: @SPAC3MAN
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/Spac3manMusic

Spaceman is Sportn’ Life Records breakout artist, and since his departure as D.Black’s hype man, his solo endeavors have kept him moving full speed. A couple of strong singles under his belt and his appearance on “Big Homie Style” off of Jake One’s White Van Music has only sealed the deal that Spaceman is a force to be reckoned with. Spaceman brings high energy to his live performance. Crowd surfing, stage dives and performing songs immersed in the crowd are not uncommon at one of his shows. He feeds off of the energy of the audience and gives them exactly what they came for. Its lights, cameras, action with Spaceman!

SEACATS
Website: http://seacatsband.com/
Music link: http://seacats.bandcamp.com/
Twitter: @seacatsband
Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/seacatsband

SEACATS are a pop-rock band formed in Washington State. The band’s music is high-energy rock with an emphasis on catchy hooks and solid songwriting. Their sound has been described as "Fun, bouncy, crunchy power pop" (The Stranger, Seattle) The band consists of brothers Mike and Josh Davis and friends Joey Britten, Julian Ledgerwood, and Cody Graves. The band has been existence since summer 2008 and has produced 3 EPs, several music videos, and played over 100 shows all along the west coast and PNW, including the 2010 Bumbershoot Seattle Music and Arts Festival, and placing as finalists in Experience Music Project Seattle's 2010 annual Soundoff! competition. The band released their debut full-length LP "Metal Music" on May 20th, 2011.

Blisters are starting to form on the soles of my feet from all the cross-town walking, and I hope I don't develop any sort of infection from wearing the same pair of socks three days in a row. It doesn't appear to be the case just yet, but we have a full day still and people are already texting me saying where they are drinking free beer (answer: everywhere).

Incidentally, the first music I saw yesterday was at the Hype Machine's Hype Hotel, kitty corner from the Convention Center. There was a massive queue stretching around the corner, but the badge I wore around my neck gave me instant access to a sparse, gutted warehouse-garage space that smelled like Taco Bell. Why Taco Bell? Because inside, they were giving away the new Doritos Loco Tacos and regular taco options. I had massive abdominal pains the day after those Doritos tacos were released (don't eat seven in one day), so I used my better judgment and enjoyed a complimentary vodka while watching Portland band Blouse. They are one of those bands who are on a ethereal rock played by attractive hipsters vibe, with punchy chorus, twinkly keyboards, and propulsive back beats and rhythms. The attractive lead singer looked uncomfortable at times (she probably saw some clown wolfing down a bright orange taco). But what I was needed a nap, so I retreated to the very quiet press suite, and plunked myself down on one of the couches.

The masseuse who was giving complimentary back massages to weary press people watched me wake up, and with perfect timing asked if I wanted to follow the nap with a massage. (We'll call it the happy ending to a nap massage). Afterward, I passed the stage with giant 4 foot tall bags of Doritos that transformed the stage into an oversize vending machine, and hoofed over to The Grackle on the east side to catch Ume, the second band I fell in love with when I moved to Houston a decade ago. They opened with "The Conductor," the song that's has boosted their career to Anthony Bourdain-rate levels (the day before, they performed the No Reservations party and had dinner and drinks with the chain-smoking foodie.) They played some newer songs unfamiliar to me that made me realize something new about their musical progression: While Ume have always played aggressively (Lauren Larson is a petite blonde cutie with nimble, wicked fast fingers running all over the guitar), they have become a really complex heavy rock band with profoundly urgent transitions. Those Blonde Redhead and Sonic Youth comparisons of the past are entirely in a whole new arena that's destined to bring the band greater acclaim.

I stopped by Cheer Up Charlies for the final day of CMRTYZ's SiiickXSW festival, but when I arrived, the line was long and they weren't letting anyone in. Apparently, Death + Taxes put on a day show that was concluding with beloved camp counselor creep Dan Deacon, leading his youth group-esque audience into silly spirit finger-type gestures. It made me think of the time he played Bumbershoot 2008, how he had audience members play duck-duck-goose and trust falls and other things that seemed wholesome and interactive, yet were conducted by a balding guy with patchy facial hair and coke bottle glasses and some stained cartoon graphic T-shirt. The type of guy you wouldn't want your daughter talking to.

Luckily, the friendly backstage worker at Cheer Up Charlie's recognized me from a couple days ago and gave me access through the alley. After a late start, I watched G. Green play a very shitty-sounding set (the sound gear from the Dan Deacon show could not be properly leveled out and SiiickXSW had a very tight schedule to follow). However, sound issues would eventually smooth themselves out.

But I had to mosey over to Red 7 for the Sub Pop showcase. Poor Moon, the latest Fleet Foxes offspring, were set to perform on the patio stage, and while I caught up with the awesome staff and my sweet friend Lily over super stiff drinks, I was surprisingly overjoyed by the band's ebullient pop that contained some folky elements, but were stacked with disparate layers that all coalesced brilliantly.

After Poor Moon King Tuff, the power-pop scuzz lover machine who has already released one record for Sub Pop with his band Happy Birthday, played. King Tuff has been a long-time favorite of mine (I always recommended his fantastic Was Dead LP to customers at Sonic Boom Records when I worked there). New tracks from his forthcoming self-titled full-length, including "Bad Thing," were interspersed with classic Was Dead tracks, and his new backing band really elevated those stoner pop classics with diligent finesse. He broke a string on his trusty old green guitar, and said "Shit, what am I going to do?" before quickly replacing it while his bass player Mighty Jake told jokes. Later they closed the set with "Animal," a perfect ending for a near-perfect rock set.

I spotted Narduwar while making my way inside for THEESatisfaction, who just killllllllllllled it. I admit I haven't given them much of a listen over the years (I think there was a song in the 5-Dollar Cover MTV webisode that turned me off), but I'm definitely gonna cop that new record, which drops on March 27. They're the freshest, most sensuous, and far-out artists to come around since Erykah Badu. Narduwar liked them, too.

Caught bits and pieces of Spoek Mathambo and Father John Misty, but was a bit drunk from all the booze that Sub Pop staffers enabled me, and I had to rush back to Cheer Up Charlies for White Fence and Mannequin Men. White Fence met my expectations for a live show, but I still prefer the records. Mannequin Men, who I recently rediscovered after they released their debut a few years back, closed the night with a handful of songs that had me pogoing, including "Hobby Girl" and a TV Personalities cover that I think was "14th Floor." As the band debated if they should play one or two more songs, the plug was pulled and no final song would be played, concluding the day on an anti-climatic note.

Now excuse me, I need to get out into the sun (sorry it's snowing in Seattle, y'all).

TRAVIS RITTER

5:30am, Friday, March 16th

My first night in Austin, I slept in a van. Last night, I retreated beneath a stairwell in the streets of downtown Austin and was almost peed upon by some drunk guy who didn't heed to my vocal "Don't piss here, dude" warning. I slowly watched the urine inch closer and closer until it stopped about a foot from where my head rested upon my laptop bag, wearing the same clothes since Wednesday.

Sleeping under that stairwell was going to be impossible. I only had the clothes on my back and no blanket, and there were all sorts of street construction projects underway and two cement trucks created a loud, constant rumbling about thirty feet away. I remained there for almost two hours until the cold really set in, so I wandered the deserted streets, past the state capitol and up Guadalupe, searching for a coffee shop with a couch I could relax in 'til I had to get back to today's festivities. I caught my first actual sleep of the night at a McDonald's that opened at 6am this morning.

I enjoyed sleeping in the van more. Yesterday, I woke up in the parking lot of a Howard Johnson's, who served a mediocre continental breakfast of cereal and pastries, which I rightfully abused. CMRTYZ, who were staying at the hotel, dropped me off in downtown so I could make the blog post you read yesterday. I spent half the day at the SXSW press suite, and even enjoyed a complimentary massage that they were offering to weary writers and photographers.

Matt King from Mississippi Studios met up with me for a late lunch and beers at Chupacabra Cafe, and we were joined by Ruben Mz from Hardly Art/Broomsticks, who happened to be walking by. The burritos we ate were humongous and covered in queso. Matt and I both got about 3/4 of the way done with our burritos before we realized the server accidentally swapped the two. No matters, we were stuffed and set out wandering downtown. Matt won a lottery for tickets to a secret Bruce Springsteen concert, so we stopped back by the Convention Center to get those, then made our way toward the Fader Fort on the east side.

Like a lot of these day parties/RSVP events, there was some awful, semi-precious indie act performing to throngs of people who seemed to be there only for the unlimited supply of free beer (in Fader Fort's case, Budweiser). We made the executive decision to not really wear ourselves out with day events, so we went to relax at the Spotify house a few blocks away. The house was painted that vibrant green synonymous with the music streaming program/service and the yard was littered with people chilling out on white couches while wearing white Spotify sunglasses and drinking free Bacardi and Miller Lite. I ran into my old Houston friend CeePlus I used to DJ with a bunch, where we caught up after six years apart. By 6 pm, we were told to drink up and leave, as they were shutting down the day party.

TRAVIS RITTER

"Let's Make Love At The Bottom Of The Pool" (Magnetic Fields Chillin')

Matt had received an invite to a rooftop pool party above the 20th floor the luxurious Omni Hotel in downtown, so we made our way back in that direction. We were supposed to meet up with buddies from Typhoon on that rooftop. Instead, we ended up in the company of The Magnetic Fields (sans Stephen Merritt), who were represented by the same booking agent and manager. We mostly kept to ourselves, but I borrowed a pair of cut-offs from Matt and was the only one of the group to take a dip. The water was warm and hadn't been cleaned in probably two days. Bree from TacocaT, who I ran into in the elevator (and about three times before that in the street), had mentioned that there was a pool party the night before. That pool was my shower yesterday.

From there, Matt and I split ways and I made my way to the Hardly Art showcase at Hotel Vegas to catch Mujeres, who had come all the way from Barcelona, Spain. I was late arriving, but caught a good thirty-minute chunk of their full-throttled garage-punk. They truly gave it everything they had, and you could see how in the zone the lead guitarist was when he closed his eyes as if he were following some complex math equation in his mind. They played hard and efficiently, cranking out jams old and new to a room full of bodies. I didn't bother taking any notes.

TacocaT were up next and played an adoring set of classic staples ("Leotard"), cat favorites ("Cat Fancy"), Costner favorites (I forget), and fully charged party riots ("Bike Party"). Some old drunk man with no teeth danced merrily in front of me, giving me two thumbs up like the old man with a bow tie in Twin Peaks. "Bike Party" was particularly special, as Don't Talk to the Cops arrived halfway through their set and joined them onstage for a song I wish they would write ten times over. Don't get me wrong, I like their sweet stuff, but this urgent, call-and-response Over The Edge-style punk is downright riot-inducing. Dear TacocaT: THANKS FOR "BIKE PARTY."

Grave Babies played next and filled the room with their distorted goth-pop. Their Hardly Art 12" arrived in Austin yesterday, so they were stoked about that, and played a good chunk of new tunes. I saw a mom and her daughter enter the venue with their fingers in their ears and quickly move through toward the backyard. Half the room present for TacocaT had cleared, but Grave Babies have some brilliant pop melodies under all that mechanized clamor, and it came through in their show. The reverb wasn't as muddling as it was when the band first started, and I actually understood a good chunk of what Danny Wahlfedt was singing. I think this is a good thing for the world. Danny has a very twisted mind.

Soft Metals and //TENSE// were playing at Barbarella for the Moog Music/Switched On showcase, and I couldn't miss //TENSE//, who could rightfully be the 21st century's most authentic and sonically gripping EBM group going. Soft Metals played a lot of newer cuts the duo has been creating since moving to LA from Portland last summer, and the room was flecked with a prismatic visuals. Mostly, I stood in back talking to a tall, beautiful woman as the packed room moved in glorious syncopation with the astral grooves.

//TENSE//, who hail from Houston, kind of stole the show though. Although the mic cut out a few times and the PA system popped and clipped lower frequency synth beats, much to the frustration of visceral frontman Bobby Lane, they demanded the austere crowd to start dancing, and soon enough the whole floor was moving (I will take partial responsibility for inciting the movement). Their sound draws heavily from the best bits of early Wax Trax legends like Nitzer Ebb (who, coincidentally, are bringing // T E N S E // along as support on their upcoming reunion tour). Yet, there is something truly modern about it, just the right combination of electro and EBM, replete with an electronic drum pads pounded in precise succession by Mariana Saldana, of the beloved minimal synth group Medio Mutante and showcase openers BOAN (who I sadly missed). I was dancing so hard, I was dripping with sweat by the time they finished thirty minutes later. //TENSE// is the quintessential act Actual Pain should book for their Second Sight night. Dear Second Sight: YOU'D DO SEATTLE A GREAT SERVICE BY BRINGING //TENSE// TO SEATTLE.

I stuck around the venue for Silent Diane and Neon Indian, but kept talking to the tall beautiful woman from Houston and Ian from Soft Metals upstairs, away from the crowds. Before I knew it 2 am rolled around, and my friend, who said there was a chance I could stay at his sublet last night, had vanished. I could have tried to be persuasive with the tall, beautiful woman, but she was going back to her sister's house all the way across town. I had no other choice but find someplace that would keep me dry overnight, in case it started to rain like it had the night before. I didn't expect to nearly be rained upon with alcohol piss at 3:30am. At least I avoided it, because I have to wear these clothes again today.

Music Docs at SXSW: Bad Brains

The premiere of the new Bad Brains documentary is one of the things I'm sad to miss this year. This looks like a great film. See the rest of the new docs here, and read about how I tripped and fell right in front of Bad Brains, just last year, at Emo's right over here.

Bad Brains are one of the most important and influential American bands still working today. They melded punk and reggae into an innovative style that has yet to be copied. Their impact and influence can be heard in groups like Beastie Boys, No Doubt, Nirvana, Jane's Addiction and countless more. Despite the troubles of an eccentric front man they have stayed together for 30 years without ever reaching the level of success so many think they deserve. Using rare archival footage and original comic illustrations the film re-constructs Bad Brains' rich and complicated history.

SXSW Has Begun: How To Be A Functional Bum

On Tuesday night, my friend Crispin slept in an excavated foundation. By Wednesday night, he'd be there again, and I would be contorting my mostly naked 6'5" frame on the vinyl bench seat inside a van outside a Howard Johnson's south of Austin, acting as the DIY security guard for expensive sound equipment. In Austin, you have to be able to sleep anywhere.

Waking up this morning, it made me feel good I showered before setting out on the road to Austin from Houston yesterday. I spent the past five days in Houston waking up on a friend's couch, day-drinking at Texas' oldest brewery, eating brunch at a place called Beaver's, catching a flu that turned my insides into juice and my sheets into sweat, seeing The Men, Psychic Ills, and R. Stevie Moore one night, and seeing Girls with girls my last night in town, among many other things. In other words, if I wasn't too drunk to fuck, I was too sick to dick. Houston was a trip that was met with unexpected surprises and serendipitous moments. Nothing was planned, but everything synced.

I held off on buying a $1 Greyhound ticket from Houston to Austin (seriously) for a former colleague to make an eleventh hour confirmation about a ride to Austin with her friends on Wednesday. I may have gotten to Austin sooner on the Greyhound, but then again, you can't smoke joints on the Greyhound or get door-to-door service. The choice was made.

We rolled into Austin at rush hour and roads were jammed with SXSW-related traffic (out-of-towners, foot traffic, complete morons, and double-parked band vans). The Convention Center was buzzing with people in red shirts milling about not really knowing whatever I asked them, people handing you little cards and trinkets and snacks. I wasn't in the system, but ended up getting checked in by a very helpful Help Desk gal (coincidentally, she wasn't wearing a red shirt). A fancy press badge on a KCRW lanyard that looks like it was designed by someone at a smooth jazz radio station or Jack Handey was placed around my neck like I just won a gold medal for being persuasive. I was ready to hit everything.

But I wouldn't even need it for first stop at non-SXSW venue Cheer Up Charlies, where CMRTYZ were running the show with two back patio stages of garage and punk music. The first band I caught was new-to-me Seattle foursome Sweet Pups, who played '77-style rock with harmonic girl-group afflictions. The male drummer was a little rigid at times, but the black-clad ladies held tight in front. Afterward, Chicago band Football ran through the field of urgent post-punk with the lanky singer/guitarist casting a diaphragm-booming voice that sounded like someone I still can't place today. (Probably some New York band that once released a record on Vice). What was the name of that one band?! It's seriously bugging me.

After running into Larry Mizell Jr., I met up with my old friend Squeaky, whose label Disaro is partially responsible for Witch House ever becoming a thing. We made our way back to some DJ thing at a bar on 6th St. called Lose Control, where a guy Squeaky was crushing on was DJing. We walked up to the second floor venue shortly before 7pm, where shitty dubstep and a very empty, extra spacious room greeted us with nauseous reactions that quickly retreated back to the chaos outside. Over by Beauty Bar, where some crazy line was stretching down the block, we ran into Lars Finberg, who was scarfing down a slice of pizza before performing with Thee Oh Sees at some Carson Daly event. Carson Daly ended up sitting in on drums for the part in their set where Lars plays guitar). Lars said that it was much better than when The Black Lips' Ian St. Pierre filled in. Squeaky noticed that there was some Dummy XO showcase around the corner at Barbarella that he wanted to go to. I stayed around for Brooklyn gay art-rock trio Mirror Mirror, who produced bare-bones synth sequences like The The and martial drum cadences like Menomena. Their singer had mannerisms not far from Stephanie lead singer Young Wil Adams. But everything was totally muddled and sounded awful.

I ditched Squeaky because Mirror Mirror were friends of his and he wanted to chat, so I walked back down 6th Street past Cheer Up Charlie's to Hotel Vegas for the Hardly Art showcase. I accidentally walked in the adjacent venue, right into the middle of some aggro-metal set that I caught exactly one minute of. The place smelled like sulfur, so I pushed past the moshing singer on my way out the door and went next door, where X-Ray Eyeballs were setting up. They had a rough start: there were a couple mistakes made in the first song, and their fog machine triggered the smoke alarm, which pierced through their distorted and oblique chaos. They dedicated more than a couple songs to Hardly Art resident dog, Chuy Pancakes, who graced the cover of Hardly Art's fancy 5 Year Anniversary zine (includes a red flexi-disc!) and played heavily from material found on their Hardly Art single "Sundae" and forthcoming LP.

I went back to Cheer Up Charlie's to see Puerto Rico's Las Adrillas, a band that featured a Davila 666 guitarist I always forget the name of singing for, well, a Davila 666-sounding garage band with a dash of speed. I actually liked it more than Davila 666 (seriously, garage rock is becoming so monotonous!). It was there that I met up with Crispin, who said he only had two hours of sleep the past two nights. After grubbing down some much-needed food, we went back to Beauty Bar for the Panache Party, where I sat around waiting for his friend to text him back about letting him in. He didn't have a wristband or badge and wasn't about to pay $10 cover. I had a badge and could have seen 30 minutes of whoever was playing. Instead, I waited in the alley with Crispin until his buddy waved him in. Once inside, I realized I had already seen the band playing in the patio (Football), and didn't even note who was playing inside. I was bored and starting to get tired, so I walked back to Barbarella for Brooklyn hipster-house duo Blondes, whose new record has been a highlight of 2012 so far. I caught a couple songs from The Coathangers, who were playing next door, in which those ladies got into their usual rotation of mischievous punk antics.

By the time Blondes went on after 1:15am, I was exhausted. I slept upright for about 10 minutes in the back of the venue on a round booth bench that had no table. The duo didn't have a table either and set up their gear on the floor of the stage. When they finally started playing, I forced myself out of my seat to dance. However, there's one thing about taking in Blondes' ethereal vibe in the live PA setting: If you close your eyes while dancing to their music, you're gonna fall asleep dancing.

If legalities wouldn't have forced me back out into the street at 2am, I maybe wouldn't have woken up sweating inside a van. I'm sure Crispin feels the same way.

After South By Southwest, Lars had to make it back to Los Angeles, then fly up to Seattle to play two different shows in two different bands (Puberty and Intelligence), then fly back to L.A. to catch up on all the work he had missed. Here are his recollections of that long Texas weekend. —Eds.

One of my favorite bands and good friends Wounded Lion from Los Angeles asked me if I would like to play drums (and guitar) with them at SXSW. I jumped at the chance, I had a blast, and these are my complaints:

Shannon of Shannon and the Clams and Wheels Capponi

Day 1:
Wanting to get a good night's rest before almost a week of shows I meet some friends for dinner in L.A. at the famous "Red Lion," a german sausage restaurant (Fun Fact: 'Shrek Forever After" was written here). I have recently given up being a vegetarian after five years and now eat here four nights a week and hate myself. I celebrate my self loathing with 500 knee-high beers. I get a text from one of the caring owners of the couch I am mooching that says "Ok, it's getting late you don't want to be tired tomorrow," and I reply that I'll be home in a sec and we go to a bar and play Foosball (I hate foosball) for two hours, get very competitive and scream. At one point my buddy flips the entire table over and we are ejected. I sleep for 20 minutes and am picked up to go to the Burbank airport. Phase 1 of Operation Fuck Up complete.

His demo sucked.

While boarding the crabby plane our guitarist/bassist Shant is helping a super old Indian lady put her gigantic bag in the overhead compartment and one of the stressed out dickheads goes 'KEEP IT MOVING KID!" This is really embarrassing but fuck it, sitting in the cramped bathroom, I accidentally pee all over the back of my pants. Did I mention I am 36 years old? Jesus. At baggage claim I watch the singer from Queens of the Stone Age graciously pose for a photo. Five hours later I will graciously (desperately?) pose for one with Mike Oh Sees for one of the five people who saw us in Denver this year. We go to Trailer Space and stand outside for Shit and Shine, who sound kinda cool, like a mash up of the first Tricky record and the Butthole Surfers. Remind me to burn a mix for my dad. We go to the Scoot In and see our Seattle buddies from Butts and old friends with a new band Football (not kidding). Jimmy is wearing a Football shirt, and when I compliment it he says, "Oh man, we got these from target! They're only 9 bucks, so we're charging $10!" Some hungover dude is going to be bummed when he goes shopping with his girlfriend Sunday morning. Loading in, John from Thee Oh Sees is lugging a huge bass amp through the crowd and has to stop to do the oh-no-you-go, oh-no-you-go, left right-left-right-awkward-syncopation dance with some guy who finally blurts "WHICH WAY YOU GOING DUDE?" John is stunned by the rudeness and walks on and I hear the guy's girlfriend say "Don't be a douche!" I tell John who laughs and goes, watch this, and walks back over and goes "thanks for being a douche on that one," and the guy's toothpick drops out of his shocked mouth.

We mess with Texas.

X-Ray Eyeballs are good, but the sound is so shitty that when I look back at the sound booth I expect to see an Almond Joy with sunglasses giving the "Eh, it's the best I can do" shoulder shrug. When Thee Oh Sees play, some 9-ft fartknocker in a ten gallon hat goes up and stands on the stairs, which only compeletely blocks the view of about 200 people, so I go up and ask him if he might stand to the side so we can see, and he says 'FUCK YOU I OWN THIS PLACE AND I AIN'T MOVING A MUSCLE." Wow. I tell Shant and joke that he should go take his hat off so at least 199 of us can see, and he just nods and walks up the stairs behind the dude and snags the hat and has it 2 inches from plopping it down on his own head and some crazy short dude grabs him and flings him off the staircase and into a tree and busts his eye open. He starts to get dragged out until I explain what happened and and they go, "Oh that WAS the owner! He's a total asshole and we all hate him—come over here." They patch him up, call the owner a jerk and give us some drinks.

Later that night, while our host is blowing up an air mattress for me, I decide to take a "cat nap" at the foot of her bed and wake up in the same place 8 hours later with her folded up on a love seat, and feel like a real turd. In the morning Shant's eye looks so fucked up I feel sick. But man was that a good Marg. I think it even had SAUZA in it.

DAY 2:
I make everyone go to Torchy's Taco's (my fave) for breakfast, I pass on the deep-fried avacado taco since we have a daytime show at Beerland today for a bill that the great Matador Records' Gerald Cosley has put together. When I meet him he says he's a longtime Intelligence fan and has ordered the new Puberty record already, so I guess I can die even if we don't get DISCOVERED this week.

Our buddy the amazing tour manager (for Fresh and Onlys right now) gets us into the Black Lips/Bad Brains/Off! show. I chat with Shayde Fresh and Only about True Blood until we get so excited we embarrass ourselves. The singer from the Donnas is playing what one of us describes as "the fakest music ever made," so we go get hot dogs and sit in the gutter. I go back to watch Off! and see Ian Black Lips, who tells me "If I could go back in time and tell 15-year-old Ian that Keith Morris's and Steve McDonald's new band and the Bad Brains are going to be opening for me I'd flip my wig." And Jared proclaims "I just smoked out with HR!" We see our hosts band SIMPLE CIRCUT and they are great. We go home and I repeat the cat nap trick.

DAY 3:
Daytime show behind a bookstore. It takes forever to get there because of the traffic and eventually we're on a one-lane street behind one of those stupid Rick Shaw bicycles pedaling some dipshit two miles-per-hour up a slight incline. You could seriously do the human centipede faster than these clowns are going and you wouldn't have nine miles of cars behind you. Get to the bookstore and the person in front of me receives the last foamy squirts of the keg. The show turns out really fun. We notice a cute girl with a tattoo of Animal from the muppets on her leg and begin quizzing each other if that is a dealbreaker. We decide it is until she sets up her drums and goes FUCKING CRAZY and decide it's a deal-MAKER. Next we are to play a house party at 9 pm and they've asked us to get there at 7. We do and no one is there except a guy behind a huge drum kit in the living room who holds perfectly still until you walk in with your arms full with a heavy amp and he rapes your naked ears with the biggest drum 'radamfuck' you've ever heard. Repeatedly. We sit on the curb for two eternities until our buddies from Shannon and the Clams come to give us some comic relief. They tell us of Bonging the Cube, an advanced new beer-guzzling technique where you stab a hole in each can of a 12 pack and hold the drizzling beer box over a funnel. We argue if this is actually possible, as it would seem that it would take an hour for 12 beers to drain out of their puncture wounds. Discuss.

While waiting and waiting and waiting, a minivan pulls up and a lady in red leather thigh high boots, red leather mini skirt, red leather bustier and fishnets pops out. Brad says "I guess I will stop worrying if my brand new red Vans are making me stick out." The sexy red leather band plays and the house is packed and we are next so I assume it'll be great. I do not count on the fact that a drunk guy will find a rope in the front yard, set a bucket up in the middle of the street and announce that he's about to "THROW A ROPE KNOT," and everyone circles around him. He tries to whip the rope into a knot unsuccesfully about 500 times and we start to set up. We start playing in the empty room and Shant will tell me later, "I actually thought, 'These suckers, they are going to be BUMMED that they missed the first half of this song.'" No one enters the room. On the bright side, two of the four people stay (one who leaves is Tom Lax of Siltbreeze Records), but the two that stay are a nutzo dancing couple and at one point the girl even puts a lampshade on her head. We head back home and retire to the awesome outdoor porch to bond (over Magruber actually being a hilarious movie) and complain (about ropes).

This is where we got to sleep.

Day 4:
Today we are playing a daytime outdoor show sponsored by Sailor Jerry. Some people have mixed emotions about this. I, however, mix my emotions with rum and ginger beer and a bunch of great bands playing and shut the fuck up. The Wax Museums are fantastic and play my favorite song, "Breakfast for Dinner," which contains the lines "You can't make an omelet/Without cracking eggs/I don't want an omelet/I want what's between her legs," and "You can't make pancakes/Without making batter/I don't want pancakes/And I don't care what's the matter." I get to hang with my best buddy Pete from Coconut Coolouts and meet Personal and the Pizzas, who are so fun/funny you want to be them. Sailor Jerry asks us to do an interview in an airstream trailer and ply us with rum and offer us free tattoos. I get DUCK HUNT across my knuckles. We have a long time before our show later, so we go home for a while. Upon passing a Chilis, Brad asks if we "ever get down with Chili's?" and it turns out some do, so it's suggested for dinner. My plan was to eat tacos for five days straight, but this is so hilarious I am happy to roll with it. I send a joke text to Shannon from the Clams saying "I guess I am eating Chili's for dinner," and she replies "NO you are not, you DO have a choice." I order a twice-stuffed-bacon-chicken-chipotle-babyback-avocado-mushroom-grilled-sirloin-monterey-cajun-ranch mudpie, and we have a nice family dinner.

The Red Hot Chili Peppers were blasting on the stereo when we entered, ripping the time-space continuum.

Later we go to the CMRTYZ curated show that is outside at a place called [name redacted]. The Portland band Christmas is playing and they rule. We play next outside under a giant full moon with a ton of Seattle friends and Lion fans going nuts and while playing I get such a feeling of satisfaction (pardon me—GROSS—I know) that my mind deletes the files of the shitty house party the night before. My buddy tells me a story of having to go number two in one of the horrid porta-pottys, and—realizing he has a bottle of whiskey in his back pocket—figures he'll use his time-management skills and take a swig. Of course just then the door pops open and 2,000 of the prettiest girls in Austin see him crappin' and drinking. His heart freezes and he just bellows 'TAKE ME TO THE HOSPITAL!!!"

Later at Beerland, I see an old band friend that we ran into on tour in Europe last year who had invited us out for drink, for which he and his old lady bring their 1-year-old son, offer us blow, drink two bottles of wine in ten seconds and can't hear the kid screaming over the blasting techno music until they finally notice him wriggling under the blanket, which was just draped over the entire stroller, pick him up and say "Oh man, he's SOAKED to the bone." Bummer City. Later I see him and his lady and wonder about the kid and then notice that the blanketed stroller is pushed into the back corner of the smoking patio surrounded by 9,000 chain smoking rockers. He waves me over and tries to talk and some slime ball leans over and asks him how much coke to buy. He replies "Just get it all and we'll sort it out later." Right then the mom drops her beer bottle and it smashes on the ground and kid starts bawling under the blanket. I walk into a porta-potty and hang myself.

"Hey Lars, all you need is a chain and you's in the band!" — Personal

Day 5:
We only have one show tonight at midnight, so we head over to Trailer Space to see Shannon and the Clams but miss them as they got put on an hour early. So we just hang on a porch across the street with the Pete and the Pizzas and I don't watch a single of the 10 good bands playing inside until the Pizzas play last and are my favorite band of this whole trip. They are hilarious and as they are about to start—just after Grass Widow (who are great) finishes their set—the singer goes, "What....the...fuck....was....that?" I see my friend Lacey, and when someone offers her a beer she says "No thanks, I think if I drink I will explode."

Too drunk to flush

The show is fun with lots of dancing and a nice one to go out on. As we wait to get paid I notice a girl in an amazing dress and realize all my pictures are of disgusting toilets and maybe it would be nice to have some pictures that don't make you barf, so I embarassingly ask if I can take a picture of her cool dress. She is visibly bummed/creeped out. I frantically try to explain that it's for a newspaper and that I am in a band that played tonight and blah blah blah, and she stops scowling and asks which band and turns out she came to see us and then finds out I'm in the Intelligence and grabs both my hands and holds them in the sky for an awkwardly long time and says she loves me and puts our band on every mix cd she's ever made and I am stoked until I look over and see the most bummed-out dude ever (her boyfriend) glaring at us from a bench. We head home and chit-chat and tell jokes ("What's the difference between a bag of coke and a baby? Eric Clapton never let a bag of coke fall out of a window." Don't worry, I GROANED TOO.) until 4 am when we have to leave for the airport. I am wiped, but I can't wait to review all of my new contacts and see how my networking pans out.

The dress.

"Vockah's raunchy lyrics have a gospel-like passion, a burning, defiant pride. It was "just" dance party music, but it was life-affirming…My SXSW had been redeemed at the very last moment…"
-Michael Azzerad, 2010

Vockah Redu was one of the very last artists I saw at SXSW, and he was also the best. My friends had caught an afternoon set by the New Orleans Sissy Bounce-r at Beerland, and their breathless enthusiasm had me utterly convinced that I had to see Redu's set later that night at the Emo's indoor stage. They were eager to see him for the second time in one day, and I can't say I blame them—Vockah Redu's performance was one of the most energetic and ridiculous spectacles I've seen in a long, long time.

Admittedly, he danced more than he rapped, but that wasn't the point: the point was to engage, impress, and exult. Backed by four booty-popping gays in jeggings, Redu tapped into a formidable internal reservoir of boundless liveliness, tossing his fro about and spitting out aggro dub-style scatting. He contorted his body, posed theatrically, writhed on the floor, and willed the crowd into frenzied participation. His set had at least three false endings—by design—which seemed to sate a crowd that, high on endorphins, lusted for an encore.

It was weird, it was wild, and it was the most fun I think I had all week. Dave Halegua of Olympia band Christmas traded one of their new full-lengths for Redu's demo CD. Through the magic of filesharing, I've been bumping it for the past couple days now. It's a tight disc, but doesn't come anywhere close to approximating the experience of his live show. Here's a standout cut from the demo that gives a good indication of how Redu's call-and-response with the audience plays out:

BTW "vockah" is, if I recall correctly, how Mike Schank from American Movie pronounces "vodka."

Obviously, Grant and Kelly were impressed by Redu as well. Watch the Stranger's exclusive live clip from the Emo's set here.

Tomorrow, my belated post about Vockah Redu's flabbergasting Emo's set will go up. I promise. Until then, enjoy this track from Meth Dad's Spring Break Forever cassette. I didn't actually see Meth Dad perform at SXSW, but was pleased to cross paths with MD himself (Blastoids' Tyler Walker) outside the converted school bus the band had parked on the East Side for the week's festivities. Walker was kind enough to bro me a Meth Dad tape, and the standout for me so far is "Worst Witch," with its insistent, Carpenter-esque synths. Enjoy:

This was Blastoids' tour bus:

For the last 48 hours, I have been completely obsessed with track one from a Chinese Underground compilation I scored at a SXSW-fringe house show in NE Austin last week (you'll recall I was super-eager to spin it). "Magpie" by Birdstriking is one of the most infectious post-punk anthems I've heard in a hot minute. Apparently VICE is already a little hip to gaggle of rock-obsessed undergrads. The vocals are so murky and indecipherable that I don't know if they're in Mandarin, Cantonese, or Klingon.

For me, it's all about this song's second wind. Birdstriking could easily have ended their song around the five-minute mark, but instead the song has a marvelous concave structure—mellowing out for a moment before gradually building back up intro a swirling fervor. It's keen post-punk with post-rock dynamics.

Nightmare Before Christmas Shit." width="250" height="250" />

Darwin-Air. Nightmare Before Christmas Shit.

Mad Rad: To Sitka-Juneau for raves. Alaskan Flight 69 from SEA through Ketchikan. Wait a second, this isn't Austin.

Those traveling with Darwin may pre-board all planes. 25 minutes into the first flight someone went into one of the bathrooms and tried to smoke. (Not one of us.) He was busted. What’s the technique there, for smoking in the bathroom of a plane? - Light the cigarette, inhale/exhale/drop cigarette into bowl, and flush? The guy couldn't last half an hour. $2000 fine. Get the gum, dude.

St. Patrick’s day Sitka forced Jager into our mouths. Drums in the “vagina room.” Sitka to Juneau: took longer to de-ice the plane than it did to fly there. Everything is crisper in Alaska. Elk, emu, wild boar, and herds of moose are all over the place. Things are bear proofed. Alaskan Amber tastes better Alaska. So does a salmon omelet. Radjaw went on boat. It was sunny. He fell off a rock or something into the water.

The Alaskan Hotel in Juneau is haunted. It used to be a brothel they say. Much action has occurred there. You can hear footsteps. The radiator heating system creaks words and haunted whispers like, “GET OUT NOW.” And “MAKE ME A SANDWICH BEFORE YOU GET OUT.” Murders and suicides have happened there they say. It’s on the National Registry of Historic Places.

The rave was a womb. KXLL Excellent Radio hosted/produced (great peoples, those involved with KXLL). Many kids with lights and Alaskan rave moves. Juneau people letting it out. FileJerks' Astronomar (Juneau’s Favorite Son) spun and fuzz-battered loving ears. After the show, Buffalo Madonna beer-jousted locals that climbed up the outside of the hotel to get in to the room to party. Beer-jousting: charging arm out/beer first ramming your opponent. ‘To Party.’

<img src="http://www.thestranger.com/images/blogimages/2011/03/22/1300827115-juneau14.jpg" alt="Mendenhall Ice Cave. Not Gyllenhaal.

The Mendenhall Glacier is one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my life. Receding monstrosity. We hiked into some ice caves. I didn’t know shades of blue like that existed.

Taku Wind: A strong, east-northeast wind that rips across the Juneau channel and pricks through your skin. Sometimes attains hurricane force at the mouth of the Taku River, after which it is named. It barrels down the sides of multiple mountains and funnels into town. Frigid. Chills your ass to the bone.

Juneau is a place all bands should play. Bright, frozen, sharp, burrowed friendly. You will leave like me, wanting to go back and possibly wondering, what actually is an emu? Special big thanks to Jenna and Amanda at Solitaire Promotion. (More pics after this here jump.)

Most of the time, SXSW is all fun and games. A wondrous place where bands and fans of music (and the corporate sponsors that love them both) come together in harmony. And then sometimes it's a place where a drunk person can chuck a can of Shiner Bock at a police horse during a riot outside a DFA 1979 reunion show.

That horse, Officer Oats, was just two days away from retirement. He's getting too old for this shit.

h/t: Prefix

Remember the Laser Star? Totally spotted that shit last night in the tent at Deertick's Nirvana cover concert. Incidentally, those dudes sounded totally on point, maybe even a little too faithful (John McCauley had Cobain's vocal nuances down pat). While it would have been cool hearing the band do their own spin on the material (ala the Last Slice of Butter's insane "In Bloom" cover from Healthy Times Fun Club's recent '90s Night), I appreciated their dedication: at the end of their performance, they destroyed all of their guitars onstage. Rock and roll.

Fine by me.

The day started off seeing friends at the SXSeattle party. The Young Evils are, and continue to be, perhaps the most perfect Seattle music for a sun-dappled early afternoon, and at the hiphop showcase on the inside, Fatal Lucciauno and State of the Artist had good-sounding sets. I dashed before the Physics took the stage, but if you haven't downloaded (for free) their latest track "Fix You," then you're missing some of the most mature and self-assured hiphop coming out of Seattle.

The Young Evils. NOT ACTUALLY EVIL.

Fatal Lucciauno and DJ Nphared.

Turns out hot days are perfect for sitting in the sun with a cold beverage. The French Legation Museum - the former French embassy grounds - hosted a lawn party with two stages and many places to lay your weary head to rest. It turned out to be the perfect environment to hear James Blake perform, as his low-tempo melodics translate into even more of a relaxed vibe when performed live (as a certain Hollis Wong-Wear said, he is the Mayer Hawthorne of dubstep). Also caught San Francisco two-piece the Tune-Yards, whom I'm definitely going to be looking into more.

<img src="http://www.thestranger.com/images/blogimages/2011/03/19/1300557572-img_0502.jpg" alt="The Mayer Hawthorne of dubstep. In 3/4 profile." title="The Mayer Hawthorne of dubstep. In 3/4 profile.

No mention of the day would be complete without Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All. OFWGKTA is the single most buzzed-about group going right now, and the line at the Fader Fort reflected it (side note: even Fader cover boy James Blake was having to work his talking magic to get through the lines).

Odd Future is hiphop that is about as punk rock as it gets. The music is heavy and energetic, driven by bass hits and sharp snares, and the lyrics are about what you would expect from an eight-person deep crew of 17 to 21 year olds. Despite the intense water bottle throwing (chill, guys), they owned the crowd for every single minute of their set.

Odd Future

Wolf Gang

OFWGKTA

After a quick swing through the Sub Pop showcase to see the double duo of Shabazz Palaces and THEESatisfaction (looking good, team!), the night wrapped up at Emo's with a showcase that could very easily make one's head spin: Pharoahe Monch opened up, with Mela Machinko on vocals, and a surprise appearance from Jean Grae; Asher Roth continued to be terrible; Freddie Gibbs brought some serious Midwest lean - and a seven-deep crew - to the stage; the Cool Kids played their hits and have apparently grown up into being the Cool Men; and Das Racist finished out a six-show day by bringing down the house.

Combining like Voltron

So you're standing at a concert, watching the stage, and only the stage, and a giant video crane crashes on your head. I can't imagine anything worse.

Ford and Lopatin (formerly Games) brought the heat last night at Klub Krucial. That dark mess to their left is Prefuse 73, who assisted with extra knob tweaks and what-have-you.
