[I’ll Give You a Break is a sporadic series of posts highlighting obscure (and not so obscure) breakbeats in unlikely places, so that they may be sampled by producers or just enjoyed for their own geeky purposes. NB: Don’t forget to clear all samples through the proper channels (cough).]

Jeremy & the Satyrs were led by jazz-fusion flautist supreme Jeremy Steig, probably best known for the Beastie Boys sampling his tune “Howlin’ for Judy” on their track “Sure Shot.” (Steig is quoted on allaboutjazz.com: "I made more money from that sample than from any of my records. It saved my life at the time.")

Before he embarked on an artistically fruitful solo career, Steig cut an album full of excellent, electrified blues rock with the Satyrs in 1968, titled simply Jeremy & the Satyrs. Perhaps the highlight from that record is “The First Time I Saw You Baby (With the Pretty Green Eyes).” The bit from 0:16-0:19 is so functionally and vigorously funky it’s a wonder DJ Premier or Pete Rock never used it. Well, their oversight is your gain. You're welcome.

All you have to do is post a photo of your best, most creative breakfast with @donttalktothecops #ChampionsOfBreakfast.

The winner gets a copy of the new record, DtttC cereal, a T-shirt, and a button pack! Also, have you seen this poster?

[I’ll Give You a Break is a sporadic series of posts highlighting obscure (and not so obscure) breakbeats in unlikely places, so that they may be sampled by producers or just enjoyed for their own geeky purposes. NB: Don’t forget to clear all samples through the proper channels (cough).]

Lothar and the Hand People were a quirky psych-pop group from the late ’60s who recorded for a major label (Capitol) back when major labels catered to those crazy, drug-addled kids because business in general was booming, so who cared if an LP only sold 3,017 copies? Here, have another hit of purple owsley…

Anyway, Lothar and the Hand People, a septet featuring theremin and Moog synthesizer in their repertoire of instruments, released an excellent album in 1968 titled Presenting… Lothar and the Hand People, produced by Robert Margouleff of Tonto’s Expanding Head Band, who later worked the boards on some of Stevie Wonder’s most adventurous records in the ’70s.

Among other gems, Presenting… bears the chunky oddity known as “Machines.” The opening, vocal-free 27 seconds provide some ear-grabbing Rube Goldberg, uh, machine klang and plonk with a woozy robotic groove that's just screaming to be sampled. I'm telling you, this one's got legs—very wobbly legs. Get on it, producers.

The link to this "Women of Punk" on Network Awesome was blowing up my Facebook feed all morning, and I just finally fell prey to its greatness. It includes "30 shows containing almost 400 video clips exploring the role women have played in punk music from the 70's to today, with rare interviews and concerts, videos, documentaries and feature films." If you wanna dork out on old '80s VHS-quality videos of interviews and performances by Kleenex, the Bags, Mo-Dettes, Model Citizens, Blondie, Delta 5, Sonic Youth, Bikini Kill, Pandoras, and a segment called "77 minutes with Kate Bush," then this is for you.

Plus, it has a bunch of bands of the last decade that I hadn't thought of in a minute, like Finally Punk ("WTF, MISSILE??"), Erase Errata, All Girl Summer Fun Band, Mika Miko, New Bloods, and Tracy and the Plastics.

Monday Night Shows: Why? (and How?)

It’s 2013 and people in the music-promotional game should already know these things, but every once in a while something happens that proves a helpful reminder is necessary. Ergo, this list of common-sense guidelines to orchestrating a successful Monday night musical entertainment experience.

Prologue: Monday nights are horrible, obviously, because 97-percent of your target demo is recovering from the weekend—on top of which many people have loads of laundry to do, online music retailers' email lists to peruse, and toenails to trim. So, promoter/venue booker, the odds are stacked against you from the get-go. You shouldn’t hold an event on a Monday night. Seriously. But sometimes you have no choice. Maybe a band from overseas that’s never played your city is in town for a Monday night and maybe some people have been itching to see said band for many, many years. Oh, all right, let’s put on a Monday show, even though Mondays are the George W. Bush of nights.

Please follow these guidelines in order to make the best of a (probably) bad situation.

• Start the show early—say, 7 pm or 8 pm.
• No more than three (3) bands on the bill. This is a fucking gig, not a war of attrition.
• First band should start no later than 45 minutes after doors open. No fucking exceptions.
• Bands should not be soundchecking before they play their set. That should’ve been done before doors opened.
• Set lengths for opening acts should fall in the 25-/35-minute range, max. Ever hear of the dazzling nugget of wisdom, “Always leave ’em wanting more”? Heed that sage advice, for the love of all that is holy.
• Headliners should go on no later than 11 pm. If your headliner goes on at, say, 1 am and only gets 30 minutes to play, you’ve seriously botched things. This should be apparent by the grim realization that much of your meager crowd has already dissipated.
• Shoo out the punters by 12:30 am (at the latest) by playing third-wave ska over the PA.

[ Comment on this story ]

[I’ll Give You a Break is a sporadic series of posts highlighting obscure (and not so obscure) breakbeats in unlikely places, so that they may be sampled by producers or just enjoyed for their own geeky purposes. NB: Don’t forget to clear all samples through the proper channels (cough).]

This may be the wackiest entry in the I’ll Give You a Break annals. Check out the naked beats in the first seven seconds of Second Hand’s nutso prog monstrosity “Lucifer and the Egg.” They’re not the easiest slaps to work with, but I have faith that somebody out there can use them—especially the opening volley—to benefit the human race.

The song’s remaining seven-plus minutes take you on a serpentine journey to the heart of British prog’s baroque virtuosity and boundless tomfoolery. If you gaze long enough at the amazing cover art, it all starts to make (non)sense. The first time I heard the album on which “Lucifer and the Egg” can be found—the geniusly titled Death May Be Your Santa Claus—I was tripping on acid in Dallas, Texas (thanks, Eric and Matt). I’m still trying to recapture that feeling of helium-filled, outlandish absurdity that this track conjures.

Her bands are have been an essential staple of the punk/DIY scene for years. And now, her current solo project Waxahatchee takes the candid feel of singer/songwriter predecessors like 90's Liz Phair and Cat Power and mixes it with the serrated edge of her punk rock roots.

Her new album Cerulean Salt is being praised by NPR/Spin/Pitchfork/Everyone, and you can pick up a copy at one of the two Seattle shows Waxahatchee this weekend: Tomorrow at the Victory Lounge (433 Eastlake Ave E) or at Porchlight Coffee (1318 E Pike St) on Saturday.

Pitchfork has the new, much talked about Strokes album, Comedown Machine, in its entirety.

I'm not going to listen to it, mind you. "One Way Trigger" was bad enough to make me swear off the band for the rest of my life.

But you can! Hear it here.

Burnt Palms Cures Vitamin D Deficiency

Burnt Palms are a three-piece that play surf/pop/grunge/twee rock in a sleepy beach town in Monterey County, California. Their fuzzy guitars make them sound like a more surfy, more rockin' Marine Girls, but the vocal harmonies just make me remember how much I love the Breeders. This week I can't get enough of their 19 minute debut record, it's inherent beachy-ness is almost making up for the severe vitamin D deficiency I'm certain that I'm accruing living through another bright, grey Seattle winter... and their guitarist Christina was nice enough to answer a few questions I had about the band... Keep reading!

Where'd you get your name from? (at first when I googled you, all I got is this CNN report on a beach fire in Belize)
After making some songs with Clara, I started thinking of some names. I'm not exactly sure why Burnt Palms came to mind. I think at that time, I related to the imagery in my head of such a pretty tree being left charred. That sounds so dark… hahaha… but it was a strange year!

You guys are tucked away in Seaside, CA... any other local bands that you like to play with that are gems that we should know about? Whats the best part of making music in Seaside?
Yeah, Seaside is tucked away in a corner of the Monterey Bay. I think the best part about making music here is the close proximity to the beaches and also having a good jam space in my house with neighbors that don't care how loud we are. It's also pretty special because no one really knows it exists… (besides maybe some Californians). If you're looking for a local gem based on the genre of Burnt Palms, I would suggest a band called Palmz. They are from Santa Cruz right across the bay and they make catchy, amazing songs and play really well live… we have a special love for them! There are definitely some other bands around Monterey/Seaside that are talented and make great music. If you're looking for a high school local gem, try Pipsqueak. They are awesome.

Burnt Palms started as a two-piece about a year ago, how did you all meet? How long has Brian been playing bass with you guys?
Clara and I met through a mutual friend who knew we were both looking to make music with others again. We started off with a handful of songs I had written before we met, and with drums they became something else I was actually excited about. That totally inspired me to keep writing. Brian came into the picture after we recorded our album. Clara and I put up flyers looking for a bassist and he happened to see one at the music store… fate! He's been playing with us for about five months now.

The album has a lot of fuzzy guitars and 90's vibes to me...any favorite grunge bands?
Growing up in the 90's exposed me to a lot of great bands and I can't pick just one… although in 4th grade (behind the school at recess) I taught my friends the lyrics to Miss World by Hole…

You can check out the album on the bands Bandcamp, and album will be available on vinyl shortly!
Burnt Palms by Burnt Palms

[I’ll Give You a Break is a sporadic series of posts highlighting obscure (and not so obscure) breakbeats in unlikely places, so that they may be sampled by producers or just enjoyed for their own geeky purposes.
In honor of the recent passing of the excellent singer/songwriter Kevin Ayers, let’s dedicate this edition of I’ll Give You a Break to his composition “Lunatics Lament” from one of his best works, 1970’s Shooting at the Moon, which Welsh rogues Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci declared to be the best album ever. “Lunatics Lament” (we’re still wondering what happened to that apostrophe) is one of Ayers’ hardest-rocking moments ever, a rowdy boogie with a flamboyantly flammable guitar solo by Mike Oldfield (yes, the Tubular Bells guy—shocka!), a fantastic undulating bass line by Ayers himself, and one of rock’s great chaotic climaxes. But for sampling purposes, go to the first four seconds and build something your art-rock buddies can nod their heads to (you may have to pitch it down to -6).

[Bonus: Here's an interview with Ayers from 2007 by former Seattle denizen Pat Thomas.]

Everyone's a Star: Advice for Winners

Patrick hosts karaoke at the Monkey Pub in the U-District on Friday nights from 10 to close. These are his stories [dun-dun!].

You’re a winner and everybody knows it. When you walk down the street, heads turn, cars accident each other. You’re not concerned about the national debt because you were popular in high school and you’re popular now. It’s not just about the looks, the car, the way the wind seems to blow your name, the trust fund, the long list of sexual partners... It’s about attitude. You got ahead in life because you’re not willing to settle for second best. The sky’s the limit. Get busy livin’ or get busy dyin’. Life is a highway, and you wanna ride it all night long.

That’s why, when it’s time to let off some steam after a hard day of The Business, you sing karaoke. Taking leave of your senses with a six pack of Jaegerbombs and belting a song you heard on Entourage is just the ticket to relieve those frayed nerves. There’s only one problem: the karaoke host. It seems he doesn’t know who you are (a winner). It seems he doesn’t know how fully you’re going to nail “Santeria” if he would just get out of the way and let you. It seems he doesn’t think you’re the next singer. There are ladiezzz present.

How do you get to the front of the karaoke queue?

1. Do Not Tip. If you were going to show weakness, you’d have gone to the…Weakness Emporium? Whatever, you’re not an imaginer, you’re a winner. Karaoke hosts can smell weakness, fear, and campfire on an unwashed hoodie. Tipping a karaoke host will embolden them, allowing them to believe they’ve got you where they want you. Instead, approach them and say something like, “hey, bro, everybody in here wants to hear me do Foo Fighters, alright?” Don’t wait for an answer. Walk away. He’ll get the picture. You’ll be in the next five.

2. Arrive as Late as Possible. Showing up on time indicates a patience that you don’t have. Did you get to be Co-Colonel of Psi Supsilon Bromega by being patient? No. If the bar closes at 1:30, arrive at 1:10. Place your karaoke slip confidently with the host. Raise your voice. Big, angry words!

3. Write Illegibly. Let him do the work.

4. Sit Close to the Front and Talk Loudly with Your Friends/a Girl You Met in the Alley. Obviously.

5. Join Other Singers Against Their Will. If none of the above is registering and the host’s working-class sense of fairness is still preventing you from your due, simply join one of the singers before you on stage. Do not ask. This will assert your dominance over not only the karaoke host, but all of the bar’s patrons. In nature, sheep seek leadership and parties. Be both. The karaoke host will respond.

Above all else, it’s important to not lose sight of who you are. The Best. Using these tips, the next time you look up at that karaoke screen it will say,
Up Next: YOU!

NB: Don’t forget to clear all samples through the proper channels (cough).]

If you check that oracle of sampling, the Who Sampled site, you’ll notice that lots of hiphop artists have used Sons of Champlins for source material—e.g., the Notorious B.I.G.’s “For the Dons and Macs,” Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth’s “I Get Physical,” and the Beatnuts’ “Straight Jacket.” But nobody, as far as Who Sampled and the internet know, has plucked the opening break from that group’s “Rooftop,” off the classic 1969 LP Loosen Up Naturally? Seems hard to believe, but in case that’s true, we present it here. The opening five seconds of naked drums from “Rooftop” sure are fÜnky, and not in an overly simplified way (check the double kick at :02 and :05). Sweet.

Someday, somebody—maybe even I—is going to write the definitive essay about the importance of white-boy rockers to the development of hiphop. And what a ripsnorter that is going to be.

I'M SORRY* FOR ALL THE EXCLAMATION POINTS, but I have an announcement to make: We're having a party!!!

The Stranger is having a beer and music party called Penumbra on March 16th and it's going to be so fun! All these bands will be playing, including my own band!

The Catheters (ahh!)
Champagne Champagne
Pleasureboaters
Tacocat
Wimps
La Luz
Prism Tats

There will also be DJ sets by Peel Slowly and many local breweries in attendance for your beer-tasting pleasure! I'm going to learn so much about nice beer! This is going to be WAAAAY more awesome than drinking green Hamm's at some "Irish" bar next to a fraternity. Here's the link for tickets and info!

*Not actually sorry!

If you said "Yes," to yourself just now, well, stop talking to yourself; it's annoying. Also, read this message from the video's directors.

Mudhoney video shoot February 16th 8pm-11pm in South Seattle! We need lots of extras! No pay but you will get pizza, soda and beer. Please RSVP to mudvidextras@gmail.com for details and say how many you are bringing.

After the cut, see a clip of Mudhoney playing "The Money Will Roll Right In" live with a pajamas-wearing Kurt Cobain in inglorious shit-fi. Just because.

Amazingly, not one of my music-obsessed friends has ever extolled the virtues of San Francisco band Hot Tuna to me—and I’m old enough to have heard the band on the radio during their ’70s heyday. (Okay, there may have been one dude with whom I worked in the mid '80s who did, but I was probably too obsessed with Jesus & Mary Chain and Meat Puppets to pay him any heed.) My reluctance to listen to Hot Tuna partly derived from the band’s name and partly from apathy toward Jefferson Airplane offshoots; in retrospect, those reasons are flimsy. My bad, Jorma and Jack.

So I decided to make a concerted effort to get into Hot Tuna after a YouTube search randomly turned up the band’s “Funky #7” from 1975’s America’s Choice LP. I’m a total sucker for any song that has any variation of the word “funk” in it, so I checked out the clip. DAMN, people. I’ve been sleeping on a monster cut with a killer break for too many decades. Maybe you have, too.

Let’s assume that “Funky #7” is a tribute/nod to the James Gang’s “Funk #49”—perhaps Hot Tuna thought it was only 1/7 as good, although I would beg to differ. Anyway, listen up, people who make music out of samples: Dig the first 17 seconds of this tune and don’t forget to thank me in the credits of your next release. This is some sly shit that’s gonna make your track sizzle, dog.

Hot Tuna play an acoustic set at Triple Door Mon. Feb. 11.

You guys, Pollens is really fucking good. They have fantastically weird beats and multi-layered vocals that sort of reminds one of Tune-yards, or even Micachu and the Shapes. They were one of the bands I really wanted to see at the Capitol Hill Block Party, but regrettably missed for some dumb scheduling conflict, and I haven't gotten a chance to see them since. Luckily, the local Cornish educated six-piece just got added to the Hey Marseilles record release party at the Showbox March 1st. Innovative local talent buyer Nathan Chambers recently boasted to me that he set up their first show at the Rendezvous. He swears that several band members were playing instruments that he's never even heard of, and also assures me that they are amazing live. Listen to a few of their songs from their three song EP on bandcamp:

helping hand by POLLENS

[I’ll Give You a Break is a sporadic series of posts highlighting obscure (and not so obscure) breakbeats in unlikely places, so that they may be sampled by producers or just enjoyed for their own geeky purposes. NB: Don’t forget to clear all samples through the proper channels (cough).]

Get a load of this standout track from Sublime Frequencies sub-label Sham Palace’s 2012 release, Indonesia Pop Nostalgia: Dina Mariana’s “Mari Bergoyang.” Talk about freaky, fizzy, bubblegum electro-funk… If you don’t fall hopelessly in love with this effervescent nugget within the first 10 seconds, you need open-heart surgery to remove the stone from your main organ. Speaking of those first 10 seconds, that’s the chunk you need to sample to give your production an astronomical lift. Seriously, some clever hiphop artist could turn this into a smash hit (Katie Kate and Fresh Espresso come to mind).

The whole Indonesia Pop Nostalgia comp is recommended, too. Subtitled Pan-Indonesian Pop, Folk, Instrumentals & Children's Songs, 1970s-1980s and compiled by Mark Gergis, it reveals a Southeast Asian region bursting with bold songwriters and producers messing with tradition and new technology in a variety of wonderfully idiosyncratic ways. There are so many unusual and piquant flavors on display here, especially Ira Maya Sopha’s “Buah Manggis,” which sadly isn’t on the web. You can obtain Indonesia Pop Nostalgia via Forced Exposure or from finer indie record shops.

The first installment of Party Out of Bounds (a new monthly DJ night hosted by local artist Derek Erdman and Hardly Art maven Sarah Moody) kicks off tomorrow with a listening party for the debut Wimps LP Repeat—out on Moody's own End of Time record label. Listen to the album with food, friends, drinks, and the actual band Wimps!

Tomorrow // 9-midnight // Linda's Tavern, 707 E. Pine

*Disclaimer: I know Derek and Sarah, but would make this post even if I didn't, because I like the band Wimps, who I also know, and if I couldn't talk about cool things because I knew someone involved, I'd be posting about Key Arena events only, and even then, I met Madonna** once.
** Not actually true.

Important: Musicians—Including Alan Bishop—Dispense Advice for Musicians

Blurt has an online feature full of advice to aspiring musicians from veteran musicians, including Holger Czukay, Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley, Mekons’ John Langford, James Cotton, and Patti Smith. No matter where you are in the musical food chain, you can benefit from reading it.

Seattle-based legend Alan Bishop (ex-Sun City Girls/Alvarius B., boss of the essential Sublime Frequencies and Abduction labels) offered lots of practical tips, which you can read after the jump. The only quibble I have is with this one: “Buy your own fucking cigarettes and don't be a fucking leech.” Rather, if I may be so bold, don’t fuck with cigarettes at all, unless you want to end up wheezing, hacking, and gargling rancid phlegm before the Social Security checks roll in. Plus, the money you save from not buying smokes can go to your gear and music-buying budget. You’re welcome.

Read the whole thing here.

ALAN BISHOP (Sun City Girls, Abduction Records)

Unfortunately, due to overwhelming odds, I will assume this eager young musician is male. Specific musical details would be discussed depending on the circumstances but they are not important. What follows are the important issues:

- Lose the fear, get the confidence. Be a leader, not a follower.

- Forget about "thinking outside the box", crush and completely destroy the box.

- Get interested in everything and do it now.

- Find another way other than music to make money and never depend on music to make you a living. Don't become dependent upon others. Pull your own fucking weight. Don't go into debt.

- Question everyone and everything and never allow anyone to push you away from your direction.

- You know little of the way the world works so get fucking busy and find out what you don't know instead of thinking you already know it. There's nothing more pathetic than a 20-something "know it all." You've been fundamentally lied to since birth, so wake up.

- To attain any form of greatness, you must be able to risk all relationships you may encounter and place them immediately behind your work as a priority. So tell that pretty little girl that you are busy 24/7 and when you have time for her, you'll call her. Repeat the last sentence twenty times every morning when you wake up for a year. On second thought, do it for the rest of your life.

- Speaking of risks, take them as much as possible until it becomes extremely comfortable to take them. That way, you'll never have to take a risk again.

- Don't give in to your peers. Most of your peers don't know jack fuck about anything. Create your peers instead of settling for the peers you've been dealt. There are rarely more than a dozen people in any city who have a clue, therefore there are 12 people you need to know, so go find them. Most of the rest around you have been socially engineered to be fucking morons who will compete for your attention and energy, and how you handle these cretins will be key in determining your future.

- Never trust anyone in the music business, EVER.

- Forget about becoming "famous." If you actually do something interesting and do it well and for long enough, then someday you'll wake up and be infamous which is superior to becoming "famous."

- Compose/write your own material, record everything you do and become organized.

- Be aggressive but not overtly aggressive.

- Don't be an asshole, a thief or a junkie.

- Buy your own fucking cigarettes and don't be a fucking leech.

- Become a master of drugs and alcohol; do not let them master you.

- Don't be a flake. Show up on time, every time.

- Start traveling as soon as possible.

- When you think your plate is full, move to a bigger fucking kitchen and learn how to manage 100 plates simultaneously. The more you push yourself, the more you'll be able to deal with, and when those around you begin more and more to resemble infants, you'll have unlimited options.

And then the world will become your kitchen.

Now get to work.

[ Comment on this story ]
