[Apologies for the lag on this one, after some Monday 'Squatchin, it took five whole hours to drive back to Seattle in Memorial Day Ski-Doo/camper traffic! I guess the constant rain caused a mass exodus from all manner of weekend fun. And OMG you should have seen this Taco Bell line in Ellensburg.]

The little stage that could, the Zulu Chihuly Cthulhu or whatever stage, is for "Northwest" acts. It's intimate, like your fav local hiphop group agreed to play your backyard and some really drunk body-painted neighbors came over to dance like they recently learned how. Kingdom Crumbs were the backyard band for the afternoon (they started at 2:20pm). Four frontmen, two laptops, and so much bounding around the stage—ten points for their occasional synchronized moves (everyone should have more synchronized moves, seriously) and unique set. The assorted midday crowd (guy in a gas mask with a camera on a pole, girl in a swanky sequin dress, guy wearing Dropkick Murphys sleeveless tank) was also defs impressed.

jumbo-Tron420

Danny Brown

Then it was time for Danny Brown's 3:15pm set over at mainstage. If you don't already know ALL about him, Danny Brown is an insane human being with the A+ best laugh at Sasquatch. And before his show, Kelly O got to meet him! Boasting wild hair, missing front teeth, and wearing a black T-shirt so long it looked like a dress with gym shorts underneath—he charmed the crowd with his spazzy honk/whine vocals and boundless energy; my eyes were glued to the Jumbo-Tron as he frolicked across the stage, rapping almost exclusively with his mouth wide open and grinning. Apparently he was wasted (O RLY?), an announcement he made several times during his set after he spilled an entire cup of something. Overheard in the crowd: "Is he speaking English?"

Elvis Costello will always have a place in my heart, but his evening Sasquatch mainstage slot seemed a bit out of place in the Gorge setting, playing to the zoned-out nutbars and precious indie couples killing time before Mumf & Sons. Costello (with Steve Nieve, an original Attraction) played hits and non-hits that spanned his career—of course I was glad to hear "Everyday I Write the Book," and my personal fav "(I Don't Want to go to) Chelsea"—though his familiar sound had been dipped in a little more reggae juice than usual. The mainstage audience dutifully crowded around the giant stage, but didn't seem to be moving, though where Anna Minard was sitting, a lone man was rave-dancing on the hillside—there seem to be a dozen of those per show, no matter what show, and how inappropriate the music is to be rave-dancing to!

Derek Erdman

"This one's for the ladies of Washington State."

The surprise Sunday standout performance was definitely Killer Mike. We didn’t even catch the whole set, but WHOA! You could hear his heavy-bass beats from across the pizza ditch (a depressing ravine littered with triangle-shaped boxes) that separated the mainstage from Yeti, where his classic hiphop filled the space. Mike commanded the stage and seemed equally as into the crowd as the crowd was into him—everyone was crazy dancing, especially during his high-powered jam "Kryptonite." Near the end, he gave an inspirational sermon (with a cracking voice) like someone who'd been through some shit (Josh Bis and I were wondering if his last name was literal). He also thanked Washington for legalizing it (welcome!). After his last song, a KIL-LER MIKE! chant started as he exited the stage from the front. As he walked away, fans hung onto the chain-link fence, shouting praises at him—he circled back to thank them, and even let Kelly and me give him a big hug #nbd.

I was watching Grimes' light-sounding performance and felt sorta bad when the audience demanded she "sort it out, sort it out," and "turn it up, turn it up" when the vocals were much too soft. Her shadowy, lispy poptronica just wasn't super well-suited for the giant night crowd who wanted a bitchin' party (10pm is the wall, and I'm not talking about Pink Floyd, EVEN THOUGH I ACTUALLY AM BECAUSE CAN YOU BELIEVE SOME CAMPSITE COOL-BRO WILL STILL PUT THAT ON AT 10AM? WHAT YEAR IS THIS?), as she is a solo musician behind a desk/table (what do DJs call those portable things they stand behind, that look like cooking-show counters?) of technology, and even though she had interesting back-up dancers, it just wasn't the right vibe. I'm sorry I just said "vibe."

Ephrata Safeway cam

<del>Mumford & Sons</del> A Pomeranian in someone's car with a dreamcatcher!

Out of morbid curiosity, I ran over to the Mumford & Sons mainstage show for the non-stop earnest banjo-ride that seemed to be tailor made for indie couples wearing two-person Urban Outfitters ponchos and searching for meaning. I immediately noticed the British band were FAKING AMERICAN ACCENTS! SLIGHTLY SOUTHERN ONES! Plus banjo (so hot right now), stand-up bass (eternally hot), and a talented piano/keyboard played wearing a nice vest. It's music for buying a Prius to. A guy next to me explained matter-of-fucking-factly that Mumford & Sons are the most popular band in the world.

The night closed with the #1 thing at Sasquatch: PRIMUS 3-D!!!

I'd planned to stop by Easy Street's last night in Queen Anne on Friday and maybe catch some Yo La Tengo, but I knew I was too late even before I left the house. The 'net was going crazy with photos—the crowd gathered outside, the windows all fogged up, the piles of music outside for cheap.

We did stop by for a quick farewell but the cold was only bearable for a minute, so we headed to Add-a-Ball in Fremont to get rid of some quarters. Oh man, have you ever played Bride of Pinbot? It's a pinball game featuring a super-sexualized lady robot who makes hilarious "ooooohs" and "aaaaahs" when you get the ball right. Ahem. Moving on.

Lacking in a real plan for the evening, we knew it was time to play Ballard Roulette—a game that started as Funhouse Roulette (roll up to the Funhouse on a whim and see whatever band is playing no matter what). More after the jump!

The Sunset Tavern looked pretty hoppin' so we walked in and were greeted by a whoosh of fun danciness that turned out to be the last song in the Redwood Plan's set. Since I missed most of their show, I asked two enthusiastic Redwood fans named Brooke and Stormy to describe it.

Please describe the Redwood Plan's music.
Stormy: I would say the easy option is to describe them as dance punk.
Brooke: Yeah I think they're like electro punk, I don't know if that's correct, but I love what they do with the synthesizer and insistent dance beats. I can never not dance to them.

Is this an ideal venue to see the Redwood Plan?
Brooke (to Stormy): Tell her what you said earlier.
Stormy: The Sunset is my security blanket. It's my favorite spot to see local music.

Anything else you'd like to add?
Brooke: Redwood Plan kicks fucking ass, how about that?!

Then I asked the band for a photo right when they were trying to load out, which is always the best time to ask a band for anything! They were very friendly and told me their album release show would be at Neumos on February 15th with Vox Mod.

The Redwood Plan, trying to load out.

The next band was Hounds of the Wild Hunt and the crowd was SO STOKED. So stoked in fact, a girl whipped me in the face with her jean jacket on accident when she while she was crazy dancing. There was a lot of passion going on at the Sunset, but they ran out of pizza so we had to move on.

Davidson Hart Kingsbery

The Tractor Tavern was filled with cowboy hats and boots and really nice people. The band playing when we walked in were called Davidson Hart Kingsbery (and according to the sign, Mark Pickerel and his Praying Hands had also played that evening—wasn't that guy in Screaming Trees??) and the crowd was loving them. The six gentlemen on stage played raspy sweet country/western tunes that the whole bar was dancing along to (like, awesome couple dances that I don't know the names of).

I met a woman in the bathroom who was dressed like a prairie fairy and had a star tattooed on her face. She told me that my hair was "real punk rock, sister" and gave me a hi-five.

We are NOT effing around with the newest, most SIZZLINGEST edition of the Friday Night Giveaway. Answer this Line Out trivia question and WIN BIG:

What was the name of the child born and raised in the post office line while Utilikilt Man pulled packages out of his hippie cart?

The first hot shot to answer correctly will receive the following incredible prizes:

· A Justin Beiber singing toothbrush (plays the songs "Baby" and "U Smile")!
· A $4-off coupon for See's Candy (if you buy $40 worth, that is)!
· A rose necklace I found in Cal Anderson Park a long time ago!
· Two cough drop filled with cough suppressing goo!
· Birthday candles!
· TWO perfume samples!
· A pumpkin spice lollipop (that tastes like Bath & Body Works)!

I made it to the Paramount on Tuesday, early enough to see Animal Collective, but late enough to have missed Micachu and the Shapes (who I love). I was bummed, but luckily I was able to turn that frown into weed! Getting too stoned before Animal Collective is a duh, and maybe the actual prerequisite for this type of show? God, maybe even the prerequisite for ANY show at the Paramount (disclaimer: do not weed yourself before going to the Paramount [disclaimer disclaimer: unless you have a license to weed]).

"THE GOLD CEILINGS IN HERE ARE BREATHTAKING." Within the first 45 seconds of being in the Paramount lobby, I had already made a very serious pact with a friend to get DRESSED UP and attend The Nutcracker there, "WITH A GIANT BOW ON MY HEAD."

Let's talk about the show + more beautiful Josh Bis photos after the jump!

Josh Bis

Bob Marley poster.

The set made me woozy. Big, glowing TEETH and pointy spirals—somewhere in between an Easter themed Tim Burton movie and the set for Pink Floyd's carefree younger sister's band. 'Twas trip-py.

The world is full of people who know more about Animal Collective than I do. But it's never too late to learn! I observed: acid dancing (the man next to me was clapping during decidedly non-clappy parts, spinning and groping his face and neck wildly, before abruptly stopping to ask a girl if she wanted to get on his shoulders), a few half hearted lighters and hands up in the air, a few groove wizards, but mostly everyone just stood there and watched. I KNEW we were all stoned. Standing felt fine... not stuffy or rude, just okay. Maybe Animal Collective didn't even WANT us to try and dance. The music was too jumbley for that.

Josh Bis

Black light velvet shroom.

A sweet slideshow of photos from the show, by Josh Bis.

Jen Graves remembers a time when "Highway to the Danger Zone" was a serious song*. I do not remember this time, but I do remember back when Tom Cruise was a person, so it sounds like I just missed it. I took a re-listen and WHOA is this one seriously pumped-up Kenny Loggins testosteroney n' cheese fest! I didn't realize that: a) the airplane is a female who is "spreadin' out her wings tonight"; b) Kenny has affected a special accent just for this song; or that c) Kenny Loggins was born in Everett, WA??

The last one-and-a-half minutes of this three-and-a-half minute long song are just Kenny howling (in his special 80's Danger Zone accent) "hiiiiighwaaay to the daaaaangah zoooooooooooaaane." That is such a long time to repeat a chorus! Does this song pump you up? Are you serious about this song? Because let me tell you, "you'll never say hello to you until you get it on the red line overload."

*"It did seem really serious at the time. I thought it was serious. But I also thought I would have satin sheets when I grew up." - JG

The label on my Xanax lists hallucinations and thoughts of suicide as possible side effects. I did think of ending my life this afternoon, but I was just imagining how I would win a suicide competition—by shooting myself with two guns at once at Bed Bath and Beyond. Bed Bath and Beyond’s slip cover display invites nothing more than a violent spray, though I realized after thoroughly surveying it, not a spray of blood. I think this is why such a competition has never been held there.

What had begun as a spirited foray into the celebratory elements of quickened beer intake, left a man teetering on the edge. Rudy, who was pre-show/green room with his band Slow Dance, went with a “big hole” that might have been too big. He came out of the gush with cold teeth and a need to hunch his form over the toilet. Suddenly Rudy proclaimed there might be more than a burp coming out of his mouth. Then the official call, "I think I might throw up." When moments of platinum such as this happen, you just have to give thanks to Tim Tebow and his Lord and Savior that you have a recording device in your hand:

Infrastructure there is extremely challenged, she says, and the corporations destroy the land. Cuz’n is sensible and brainy, and she shotguns beer on a fairly consistent basis. Her shotgunning song of choice is Kenny Loggins’ “Footloose.” The beer liquid easily made its way into her system, there was eye-watering, and somehow no burp. No burp. After chugging an entire beer. Apparently, Cuz’n has never burped. Not even as a baby.

Why do you shotgun beer on a fairly consistent basis?

Cuz’n: In the baseball drinking game, shotgunning takes fifteen drinks off your total drinks.

Why did you choose a Kenny Loggins song?

Because Footloose is my favorite movie and it’s one of my favorite songs. I’m pissed they’re remaking it.

Here is 1 minute and 10 seconds of that shotgunning audio for you now:

It was June’s birthday celebration/BBQ at the Methdudez manse and Travis was pulling from a Hite beer. Meatcliff, el Dios Perro, is on-hand conducting. Hite, the top selling beer in Korea, is styled after the traditional European and American lagers such as Budweiser. Travis, with his bodily frame, is the perfect storm/vessel for shotgunning beers. At 6’10”, his elongated esophageal passageway and enriched diaphragmic abilities coupled with his innate pharynx-epiglottal-larynx-trachea mastery have beset him with superior beer intake skills. The man can flat out chug a beer. Here is that audio for you now:

Alas, there are, and at a Belltown rooftop sunset birthday party, I discovered one.

The audio you are about to hear is of this person shotgunning a beer for the very first time in her life. She is receiving instructions from a male voice. At the 47 second mark, this male coaching voice says, “So there’s the air. And the beer. Ok?”

Yes. Air and beer. Hand in hand. Wrapped, rapt. Stacked like monuments to our days and lives alive.

"Girls blush, sometimes, because they are alive, half wishing they were dead to save the shame. The sudden blush devours them, neck and brow; They have drawn too near the fire of life, like gnats, and flare up bodily, wings and all. What then? Who's sorry for a gnat or girl?" - Elizabeth Barrett Browning

I remember rather vividly finding the first Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band record at a thrift store in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. I'd taken to collecting copies of Herb Alpert's Going Places (I had 71 copies at one point) and anything by Claudine Longet, so I'd usually root through the record bins. My Claudine Longet fascination started a few years earlier in high school when my mother and I were shopping for boxer shorts at a thrift store. I used to wear boxer shorts as regular shorts over what my grandmother called unmentionables. My mother saw a copy of Claudine on a rack and flippantly said, "She killed her whole family, she chopped them up." I was fascinated by the picture then, the woman on the front looked like a librarian. I imagined her in a room with a clever just hacking away. On 9/11 my mother woke me up by calling my house incessantly to tell me that the Sears Tower had been destroyed by airplanes. Just like with our nation's tragedy, my mother wasn't exactly accurate about what happened with Claudine Longet.

"I must listen to anyone named Claudine Longet." - Gilmore Girls SE01 / EP12

Claudine Longet is a French person who came to the United States and began to act on television. When she was 18 her car broke down on the side of the road and 32-year-old Andy Williams pulled over to offer assistance. Eventually he also assisted in taking her clothing off and they had three children. On an episode of the 1966 television show, Run for Your Life, Claudine sang a rousing rendition of of Antonio Carlos Jobim's song "Meditation" and was offered a record deal by Herb Alpert. Claudine was going places. She eventually made a record called Claudine that sold gobs of copies. Now most of them are in thrift stores right next to Herb Alpert's Going Places.

Andy Williams owns the Moon River Theatre in Branson, Missouri.

Eventually, Longet and Andy Williams were divorced. Oh, I didn't mention earlier that they were married, sorry. They were also both really good friends with Bobby Kennedy. They even named their third child after him. Longet and Williams remained close friends. Eventually Longet took up with an Olympic skier named Vladimir "Spider" Sabich. On March 21st, 1976, Sabich died of a gunshot wound. Longet claimed that Sabich was showing her how the gun worked when it discharged and killed him. According to her diary her relationship with the skier had gone downhill (ba-dum-bump) and her blood samples showed that she had been skiing downhill nose first (okay, okay, last one). Longet was only convicted of misdemeanor criminal negligence and she spent 30 days in jail. Sabich's family filed a civil suit against Longet that was eventually settled out of court, which stipulated that Longet never tell or write about her story. She's now married to a man named Ron Austin, who served as her defense attorney in the shooting trial and was married at the time. LIFE IS SO GROSS SOMETIMES.

"Anita (Bryant) Manda Hugginkiss." - Ruben Rendez 7/17/2011

Last Wednesday I decided that my iPhone was too slow and that I was going to reset it. I knew this was going to be a task because I stubbornly remain on T-Mobile and have to rely on a jailbroken and unlocked version. I did a heap of research but after spending 15 straight hours trying to make it work, the phone seemed forever lost in some compu-code wasteland. Essentially what happened is that I upgraded to a newer firmware which also upgraded my baseband firmware, making it un-unlockable. I scrambled to find a temporary replacement and looked on Craigslist for unlocked iPhones. I found one that was particularly affordable and arranged to meet a guy in the alley behind Walgreen's at Pine & Broadway. When I arrived I was greeted by a woman instead. She showed me the phone and a whole bunch of things wrong with it and I bought it because I was in a hurry. Upon further inspection I realized that the person selling the phone didn't delete anything off of it. There were 1,000 photos, most of them pictures of his naked baby and naked wife. A number of pictures were of fish and clams that he'd pulled out of the ocean. Also, I had access to his email. Over the next 3 days I spent hours reading through his inbox and sent messages. There were a number of messages to perspective employers claiming that he was "far better than any other applicant" that they would encounter. Aside from that, it seemed that he made most of his money buying and re-selling things on Craigslist. He had a vintage Browning rifle that he attempted to trade for a boat, a waterbed, an old Camaro. According to his emails, nobody really wants a Browning rifle. Oh! And weed! Man, this guy set up so many weed deals through Craigslist. Eventually I figured out how to fix my original phone and I decided to open up the new phone to see what it looked like on the inside. When I did, it promptly fell into a bunch of pieces.

If your iPhone is stolen, file a police report!

(Travis was also the star of Shotunning #1.) Guest witnesses are Ben Lashes and Heather Taylor.

The rules for Shotgunning are to shotgun a beer, then try to sing a song, any song. Travis’ song of choice is the Misfits “We Are 138”. Travis downs his beer, then what happens out of his mouth is a physical and sonic anomaly. He burps, then burps on top of the burp. It’s a miracle. Travis doesn’t just burp up a Mack Truck, he burps up the dude driving the Mack Truck, and that dude’s mother, and somehow manages to keep singing. I mean, he doesn’t just burp up fire, Travis burps up the early hominid tribal clan that discovered fire, and all their mothers. The entire continent of Asia comes out his mouth.

Much discussion has been had as to the meaning of this Misfits song. It now has a new meaning. Out of a possible 100 points, I give Travis’ “Mack Truck Hominid Mothers Clan Burp” a 138.

What you are about to hear is the burp of the motherfucking year. I’m calling it now. Mark this down for all the year-end lists. At the end of this year, this burp will be the top burp of the year. Here is that audio for you now.

Travis Ritter: “The Burp of The Motherfucking Year”

"Just the Burp Remix" (Because it’s so unbelievable.)

Song of choice is "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen. The actually don't shotgun per se, they bight into the can with their teeth (called The Savage Brew). Drawing blood. Props!

It was a sleepy Sunday evening, and Osama Bin Laden had just been pronounced dead. It feels weird to celebrate death, but if Osama Bin Laden was the one in charge of flying planes into the World Trade Center Towers, I’m glad he’s gone. Now can we funnel the trillions into alternate energy sources, education, and health care instead of wars for oil? This installment of Shotgunning features Andre with cohorts Buffalo Madonna, and DJ Darwin (who served in the United States Navy from 2000 to 2004). The three of them downed PBR Tallboys in a synchronistic trifecta. The hole Andre made in his can was svelte, chipper, and round, and his song of choice of was from John Denver. Here is that audio, live for your hearing:

This installment of Shotgunning features a white dreadlocked man from Eugene, OR named Asher Sheltron. We were at an after party. Asher was relaxed and congenial, he was wearing faux fur, and his dreads were sturdy and convincing. Asher’s song of choice was Velvet Underground / Lou Reed, and I think he was dealing some sort of LSD. (Rules for Shotgunning: Shotgun a beer, then sing a song.) Here is that audio for you now:

Beer of choice was a PBR Tallboy. Mad Rad is on tour heading down the west coast, Branx was the second stop. The shotgunning occurred prior to the show. Buffalo and his friends in Portland shotgun beer when they see each other. It’s a tradition and celebration, and it’s joyous. PBR is an excellent beverage to pound, for it flows like a mountain stream. A joyous mountain stream. The deal with this Shotgunning series is that the subject has to down the beer, then immediately sing a song, or as much of a song as they can sing. Buffalo went with the Doors cut, "Crystal Ship". Here is that audio for you now:

Chugging a beer is a primal act, not unlike blood sacrifice, or hunting a wolf. Early hominid man had fire. Mayans had Bacab, God of the interior of the earth and of thunder, the sky-carrier. We have shotgunning. We are here, and we are conscious, or unconscious, and we chug beer.

For this first installment of Shotgunning, Stranger/Mercury writer Travis Ritter met me in the International District outside Bush Garden so that I could record audio of him shotgunning a beer. He had been singing karaoke of the Hollies, “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress”.

Ritter made a svelte hole in a can of Modelo Especial, then he chugged it. Then he sang a verse of the Hollies song. I got beer on my phone. Here is that audio for you now:

T. Ritter: "Modelo Especial"
