How fucking nice was the weather this past weekend? Weeeeeeeee! I feel like I listen to different music when the sun is shining, all big and bright, up in the sky.

Cleveland lo-fi psych rockers, and new members of Burger Records family, sounded so perfect after a day of attempted
sun-burning... They sound like what you feel like after eating a pot brownie.

Did you know there's already December snow up near Snoqualmie Pass? It's true. I saw it with my own eyes. I also saw this happen last weekend. How much tequila do you suppose it takes, to keep your balls warm enough to stay in this position for over 4 minutes? MATH PROBLEM!

Kelly! Looking for hurricane music? Look no further.

Sending love to all my peoples in NY, dealing with Da Storm. Stay dry and take some solace with the Beast From The East, "Hurricane Starang" from the mighty OGC:

While we're talking NY biz, there's also the former Beastie Boys/Run-DMC/The Afros DJ, Hurricane, who had some solo joints in the 90's, such as this one off of 1995's The Hurra:

But on the West Coast there's only one song that really comes to mind if we talking about hurricane...

A classic of the same name from The Click (real-deal family unit E-40, Suga T, D-Shot, B-Legit):

Yo, but why would you ever call anyone "Slurricane"?

Not to be outdone by the Wild Rose's infamous Wet T-Shirt Contest (tonight!)—Pony Bar has announced that they'll be hosting their first (official) Wet Underwear Contest on Saturday afternoon.

Mmm, WET UNDERWEAR! If it keeps raining like this, they won't even need a garden hose. It'll probably be something, and nothing, like this:

Totally soaking wet flyers, for both bars, after the jump!

From the album Creatures of an Hour, which I don't ever really see myself listening to in the summer, but which is getting fairly heavy rotation this winter. Maybe because it was recorded in London, and the weather is shitty there too. See it after the jump:

Hey, that rhymed! On a serious tip, though, I'm really digging Cumulus' self-titled EP today. Alexandra Niedzialkowski's uncomplicated acoustic songs are a comforting balance of both lovely and, at times, a little bit sad, and her voice is reminiscent of Frente's Angie Hart... without the Australian accent. (Remember Frente? I loved Frente. Electric flute!)

According to the Cumulus Facebook page (that's where I get all my breaking band news these days) the band recorded a new EP with Erik Walters of the Globes, which'll be out hopefully sometime soon, but for now the 2010 EP and a handful of demos up for grabs on Bandcamp.

Cumulus plays the Comet on Friday, February 3rd, with the Pica Beats and the Soft Hills.

Cumulus EP by Cumulus

We've received a few event cancellations here at the Stranger bunker (weak), but if you read snow right, it actually means "Party!" Lots of people don't have to go to work today, and many won't have to go tomorrow. Still more are phoning it in from home, and eventually everyone's going to crave some actual human interaction that doesn't require an internet connection. That's where you come in, providers of social lubricants like booze and music. For one, you can join the inebriates of the Stranger editorial department for gin "tasting" at Liberty tonight. Chime in if you're not going to be a wuss and forge on with the good times tonight, or if you know your favorite joint will be open.

So Friday I leave for Mexico (don't grouse, it's been almost a decade since I last got out of <del>North America</del> the country—excepting Canada). I'm trying to put together some groovy, sunny albums on the playlist. So far I've got Lee Hazelwood, Cowboy in Sweden, Mountains, Air Museum, the War on Drugs and Kurt Vile's Smoke Ring for My Halo, among others.

What I'm looking for: Something that'll jibe with the weather and vibe of the Yucatan Peninsula, it's preferably rather monumental. Example: When I went to London about 10 years ago, I made a mixtape (on an actual tape!), which had Radiohead's Amnesiac and Airbag/How am I Driving? EP on it. Those records will forever remind me of my first trip across the Atlantic and the great times I had in that grey, foreign city with it's wholly global/future/melancholy feel. I'm headed for Isla Mujeres. Help a guy out.

If you are 21 years old or younger and make music—any kind of music at all—you want to enter Sound Off!. The EMP's annual underage battle of the bands is a great experience for any young musician—you can gain experience, meet a lot of other cool kids, and maybe even win some kick ass prizes, too. And you have less than one week to get your Sound Off! entry submitted!

Sound Off! program coordinator Jesse Reed says they've already gotten a lot of great entries that span all kinds of genres: "Retro folk pop, light metal, pun rock, noise ska, concept rock, u-new-knew-disco-soul-house, and lots of indie, hip hop, alternative and metal."

I really want to know what "u-new-knew-disco-soul-house" is.

Get all the rules and apply online here.

And if you want to know more, here's a video, created last year for SO!'s 10-year-anniversary, which showcases some of the success stories the program has helped launch (hey, that's my face talking at you!):

I just called my friend Dale Muck on the telephone. I guess we're still friends, I haven't talked to him in 8 years. I remember the last time we met, we ran into each other at a Sunoco gas station in Cleveland, Ohio. "The last time I saw you, you said that you had become a mod," he said. I remember that moment, I was at a Unique thrift store, buying used ties and starchy white shirts. He must have taken me seriously when we ran into each other in an aisle, me with an armload of ties and white shirts. "Oh, I'm mod now," I probably said. I was joking, but in the Cleveland, Ohio way. That's a place where everything has to be a joke because you're living in Cleveland, Ohio. It's a little after 6am where Dave is living now, just outside of Cleveland. He answered his phone and I apologized for calling so early and reminded him who I was and he remembered, which pleased me. Instead of catching up, I told him that I only wanted to know if he still liked the Dead Milkmen.

It's President's Day!

Dale Muck had a giant old blue car, one of those rusty boats that came from Detroit in the 1970s that you could fit 11 people into and drive right over mailbox poles. Dale was slightly older than me and my friend Josh, but we spent most of one summer together. We somehow charmed a woman who worked 3rd shift at Dairy Mart into allowing us to take anything we wanted by the armload. I'm not sure how it started, but I know we'd go often and hold our shirt out like a basket and fill it with Slim Jims and No-Doz and Snickers bars and dozens of eggs & just leave without paying. Dale Muck had a liberty spike mohawk and it was dyed orange. We'd spend hours driving aimlessly through Northeast Ohio and somebody usually had a remark about Dale's hair. Whenever that happened, Josh and I would appear out of the other windows, hurling eggs at a rapid tack, one every second at least. I remember two guys at an intersection, stunned to the point of immobility after calling Dave a "fag" and then being pelted with eggs over and over again. It seemed like we were there for three minutes at least, just throwing eggs with an 80% rate of target impact. They had looks on their faces like they couldn't have possibly deserved what was happening to them. It's not right to throw eggs at people, even though getting hit with chicken menstruation ejecta causes far more ego damage than physical harm. In 1974, the Cleveland Indians held a 10¢ beer night promotion at Municipal Stadium that caused a riot which resulted in an umpire receiving a head injury after a fan hurled a chair at him and then ran away. We were all just powerful cowards taking advantage of a situation.

In that giant blue Chevy Nova Impala SS Monte Carlo Caprice Classic we listened to the first Dead Milkmen tape over and over again that summer. I don't care how many times it could have possibly been, I'm going to say it was over a zillion, which isn't even a number. I think we each realized that eventually the summer would end and we would go our separate ways. The next time we'd see a sky, it would be over another town. The next time we took a test, it would be in some other school. Whatever we had as parents wanted the best stuff for us, but they had to do what was right for them, because it was their time. Their time, OUT THERE. But in that car, it was our time. It was OUR TIME and that would be all over the second we rode up Troy's bucket.

Don't look to hard, the meaning here is very vague.

"Why are you calling to ask me this?" Dale responded to my question regarding the Dead Milkmen. I told him that I wrote an online column for the website of a weekly paper in Seattle.

"I have to be at work in 2 hours," he replied, now sounding annoyed.

I paused and looked at the clock, which now read 4:39am. I saw two Rainier tall boys on my desk, a copy of the book Ralph The Heir by Anthony Trollope that I have been meticulously cutting all of the pages out of and most of a Totino's Party Pizza. All of a sudden I imagined myself reaching the tape of a finish line, breaking through with my arms in the air. Parker Posey ran up to me and squirted red Gatorade into my mouth. Stu Nahan appeared from nowhere to ask me how it felt to run such a glorious race.

"I'm really sorry, I wasn't aware of what time it was where you are," I said to Dale.

"Well, where are you?" Dale quickly replied, most likely assuming I was in Seattle and should be able to tackle simple subtraction.

"I'm in Guam," I lied. I don't care if yesterday was Kurt Cobain Day. This Totino's Party Pizza totally sucks.

Quote of the week: "I'm going to have a wet spot on my pants when we get to your house." - Kelly O 2/19/2011

Example: "It's nice to meet you / If you ask me for money / I'll give it to you." You know, that sort of thing. Come and eat chicken & waffles! We are very nice people!

This weekend's hideous rainstorm demands an appropriate soundtrack. For me, it's been bummerific slowcore/shoegaze act Have a Nice Life. Specifically, their epic, elegiac track "Earthmover." The song has just the right kind of doomy sonic moping and caustic beauty that feels called for. Plus, it seems obvious (to my ears, anyway) that they're using a Yamaha DD-55 for their percussion, which makes them automatically endearing.

Headphones up for the crushing wave of sound at 5:22, dudes.

In case you think the normal rules of drinking don't apply on account of the snow, I am telling you this morning that if anything they apply moreso, because you may actually fall down and burst your nose open on the ice.

(Also, this is clearly bullshit. I am de-friending the two people I know who voted against the liquor initiatives [figuratively speaking—they're still good friends.])

Hot diggity damn. Whenever the weather turns sour, sunny music doesn't cut it anymore. That's when I pull out my favorite winter records and listen to them non-stop. Here are a couple of my favorites; what are your favorite winter albums?

Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein

Always a good call for a winter album. A subterraneous masterpiece with beats that freeze the blood in your veins. The raps are cynical and grim, cold and dark. 'Nuff said.

Portishead - Dummy

I can't think of a Portishead track that doesn't remind me of freezing weather. Trudging through sleet and snow—it's a feeling that permeates their lazy, plodding drums, lackadaisical scratches and Beth Gibbons' breathy, taught voice. Turn the lights low and let the streetlights glint off the snow for this one.

Honorable mentions: Aesop Rock - Labor Days and Duke Ellington & John Coltrane (Impulse, '63)

Especially these tracks:

The middle hallway has about <del>two</del> three-to-four inches of standing water in it. Better go get your gear!

It's Never Too Late For a Summer Comp

While in Portland recently, I nabbed a copy of DIY label CGI Friday’s Sunset Grillers summer compilation, featuring 26 underground artists and one of the coolest aesthetic presentations I’ve ever encountered. The J-card insert artwork features an anaglyph image of young, Mr. Universe-era Arnold Schwarzenegger standing on the balcony of a luxuriant beachfront hotel, a modest barbecue grill near his tanned feet.

Even the tracklist sticker on the tape is in 3-D.

The cassettes come bundled with complementary 3-D glasses or, in the case of the copy I scored, two sheets of tinted cellophane. Despite being a homespun Photoshop job, I can attest to the third-dimensionality of the ‘roided-out Arnie. He looks so real that it’s easy to imagine Mr. Pumping Iron reaching out from the artwork to you offer a hit off his victory roach. As if the retro-ironic cover weren’t enough, the liner notes have an incredibly amusing ballpoint pen illustration of Worf from Star Trek: The Next Generation. Rad.

The comp’s aesthetic is so thorough that it even extends to the price tag:

Musically, it’s a winner as well. Even with our regional quota of sunshine likely expended for the next half-dozen months or so, Sunset Grillers’ 90 minutes of posi basement racket manages to evoke the heat and hedonism of high summer. 17 of the 26 tracks are brand new or previously unreleased, and material by Grass Widow, Run DMT, Tracey Trance, Inca Ore, Emily Reo, Twins, Wooden Shjips, and Chrome Wings are welcome inclusions. On the whole, the sizable (and varied) roster is essentially slacker-free (musically speaking, anyway). Peep it and purchase details after the jump.

SIDE A

Psychic Reality - Sela
Emily Reo - Above Ground and a Golden Cloud
Brilliant Colors - Absolutely Anything
The Whines - Vacation
White Fence - Who Feels Right?
Wooden Shjips - I Hear the Vibrations
Edibles - Vibe Pilot
Tunnels - The Pineal Gland is a Stargate
Run DMT - Chill O’Reilly Factor
Tracey Trance - Sumedly
Twins - Hollywood Holograms

SIDE B

Chrome Wings - Dream Club
Space Jam - I Can Do Anything
Turfingrass - Yoga Babe Ass Mat
Gem Jones - My 9 to 5
Branches - Salão Flamingo
Rainbow Bridge - Big Wave Rider
Lazer Zeppelin - Lightning’s Girl (Nancy Sinatra cover!)
Grass Widow - Tattoo
The Beets - I Think I Might Have Built a Horse
Nodzzz - If You’re With It
Hooded - My Ex-Wife
Woofen - Shaoe IV
Golden Retriever - Live January 27, 2010
The Slaves - Slaveyr
Inca Ore - Ruff Ridin’

You can order a copy of the comp via the CGI Fridays blog, which also has a link for Variable Bit Rate mp3 files of Sides A and B (no individual tracks, bummer).

This weekend's weather forecast:

Makes me think of this song:

Please don't stop, summer. Don't stop.

(Related: Screeching Weasel play the Showbox at the Market in 44 days. Eeeeeee!)

It's all fun and games until your massive island of floaties gets towed.

Kudos to the (possibly intoxicated) rebel band at Denny-Blaine this afternoon, who consolidated their pool toys into one united state of summertime fun. Everything was going well until they (allegedly) tied their floating utopia to a buoy (Or maybe just floated out too far? Anyone involved care to confirm?) and were summarily towed closer to shore by the SPD, to the cheers of the standing-room-only crowd.

Remember this dude, who had the best mushroom trip/orgasm ever when he found a double rainbow in his front yard?

My man Michael Hussein Gregory (part Chris Crocker, part Tracy + the Plastics), who auto-tuned his way into my heart during the 2008 election, has found some friends and made a double rainbow song.

Breakfast Mountain, an act I can never shut up about is slated to play. It's been a different gig each time I've seen them (twice). Once there were emcees and it was house-party style crowd-surfing good times. The next time was on a stage in Neumos, just the main man and a live drummer, and things were slightly more sedated. Both times were excellent, but it's Saturday and Imma just shut up and plug in this mp3 that speaks for itself.

Please join me in theatrically shaking my fist at California. While our June has been defined by decidedly bleh weather (wtf was that rainstorm last night all about?), they’ve been rockin’ their typically-pleasurable climes. It’s times like these that I defer to sunny tunes—call it sonic wish fulfillment.

It’s fortuitous, then, that there’s a new track out by the San Gabriel Valley’s foremost twangadelic youngsters, Norse Horse. “Shooodikids” doesn’t venture too far beyond the sonic boundaries established on the band’s heavenly Secret Geographies full-length, but it does provide a nice dose of soothing, solar-powered pop. The song’s aqueous guitar riff is boss enough to compensate for the minuscule deficiencies in the overall mix; if the vocals were mixed a little higher, the track might be a perfect June Jam.

You can grab an mp3 of “Shooodikids” over at the ever-estimable 20JFG.

I’ve also been grooving on a couple other aurally pleasing, meteorologically-contradictory tracks that have been making the blog rounds: Matthewdavid’s “Trusss” and “Late Key” by Veux. “Truss” is a wonkified bit of sidechained chillness that (surprise, surprise) also hails from a sun-flooded studio in Southern California. Veux is a collaboration between Matthewdavid (who, despite the implications of his moniker, is actually a solo beatmaker) and Atlanta’s drowsy, graffiti-haunted pop act Dog Bite. The sound of “Late Key” is promising—more sunrise than vibrant sunset, if you’ll pardon the cliché. If I were in the business of making wildly hyperbolic and borderline-baseless predictions, I’d say that “Late Key” sounds like the future of chillwave (whatever that means, right?).

You can nab “Truss” and “Late Key” at Friendship Bracelet.

Have you heard the one about the Icelandic volcano eruption that's cancelled a number of British bands' flights to annual California music festival Coachella? The New York Times reports:

The very small number of acts that have made unequivocal cancellation statements includes the Cribs, featuring the former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, which was scheduled to play on Friday. “Unfortunately, despite a Herculean effort we won’t be able to play at Coachella this year,” Mr. Marr wrote on the band’s MySpace page on Thursday. (As of noon on Friday, the Cribs where still listed on Coachella’s Web site.)

Frightened Rabbit, whose members have been tweeting sadly, has been forced to cancel. Bad Lieutenant (featuring Bernard Sumner of New Order), which canceled a pre-Coachella show in San Francisco that had been scheduled for Friday, is stuck in limbo.

Sunday’s maybes include Delphic and Gary Numan, who wrote on his Web site on Thursday, “The last thing I expected this morning when I woke up was to hear that volcanic ash might be preventing us from flying to America.” Mr. Numan’s American booking agents said they are trying to book him on a flight arriving on Sunday afternoon and “make a mad dash to Coachella.”
