He's long been a master of suspenseful mood enhancement and fostering a sense of infinite expansiveness&#8212;qualities that make him a candidate to work with a film director on an ambitious sci-fi project about extraterrestrials&#8212;and those elements blossom further on <em>Xenon District</em>. Here and there, Panabrite drops some subtle beats, adding rare rhythmic punch to his astral ambience (the stretch near the halfway point of side 2 is especially piquant). Fuck that! Keep the spirit of this place alive. <em>Stand in the place where you live</em>, chump. As big bro from <strong>Shabazz Palaces</strong> said: "Do not go to where all these followers are leading you."</p> <p>Hiphop culture is so mainstream, it's got its own reality-show stars. Look at <strong>Joe Budden</strong>&#8212;11 years ago, thanks to a great mixtape and a hot Just Blaze&#8211;laced single, I was hype on this dude ("10 Minutes," off his disastrously sequenced debut LP, will forever have my respect). Then, on our way past the Comet, we stopped to appreciate that <strong>two extremely tan people were trash-dancing barefoot</strong>. I couldn't stop staring at their feet. The lineup includes synthesist/composer <strong>Keith Negley</strong> (ex-<strong>Sleepy Eyes of Death</strong>), guitarist <strong>Thomas Hunter</strong> (<strong>Kay Kay and His Weathered Underground, Wild Orchid Children</strong>), flugelhorn player <strong>Chris Littlefield</strong> (<strong>Karl Denson&#8217;s Tiny Universe, Blusirkut</strong>), and <strong>P Smoov</strong> (<strong>Fresh Espresso</strong>) on more synths. The masterly <strong>Steve Fisk</strong> co-arranged and co-produced. </p> <p>Those missing Sleepy Eyes of Death, should hop aboard this rocketship posthaste; those who like exciting sonic travelogues should do likewise. Watt Mongoose elegantly maneuver in the gripping, interstellar zone where cosmic disco and motorik-grooved krautrock intersect. <em><a href="http://wattmongoose.bandcamp.com/">Snake Mind</a></em>&#8217;s six instrumentals abound with head-rushing propulsion, whooshing, percolating synths, and artfully FX&#8217;d horns. <strong>&#8220;Istanbul&#8221;</strong> immediately thrusts you into a momentous swirl of perilous intrigue, as does <strong>&#8220;Bangladesh.&#8221;</strong> The EP peaks on <strong>&#8220;Caracas II,&#8221;</strong> an ultimate chase-scene score breathlessly arpeggiating and throbbing somewhere between French electronic-prog gods <a href="http://www.progarchives.com/artist.asp?id=1302">Heldon</a> and American <strong>Goblin</strong> homagers <strong>Zombi</strong>. The closing <strong>&#8220;Caracas III&#8221;</strong> is a departure, a meditative composition spotlighting Hunter&#8217;s beautifully crystalline guitar work and Littlefield&#8217;s mournful horn sighs converging into fluctuating waves of synth pathos. </p> <p>I don&#8217;t want to rush to brash conclusions (oh, wait&#8212;I <em>do</em>), but after three listens to <em>Snake Mind</em>, I believe that Watt Mongoose have jetted to near the top of the Seattle band heap. If you don't know <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Half_Japanese">Half Japanese</a>, they were charming mid-'70s experimental punk janglers/noisemakers that mostly consisted of brothers Jad and David Fair, who <strong>wrote love songs and monster songs</strong> and didn't care about such superfluous things as tuning guitars. Jad Fair has kept the eccentric torch burning, making cuckoo tunes that include a lot of free-form talk-lyrics ("popcorn mixed with romance/you've got pretty eyes/YEAH") and <strong>enthusiastically simple musicianship</strong>. Playing for the first time in a while (possibly years?), <strong>the Cripples</strong> have been, uh, hobbling around Seattle since 1994, and you should not miss their chaos! I asked singer John Van Deusen for a hint, and he replied: "<strong>It's kind of hard to explain.</strong> The new record is called <em>Adding Up the Wasted Hours</em>, and I think the title sums up the overall vibe of the record. We're still a power-pop band, and the music still revolves heavily around the strength of the songs and their melodies. I do think, out of context from the rest of the record, individual songs feel a little naked. Almost as if they need their siblings around to make complete sense." <strong>I cannot fucking wait.</strong> Opening the show is Trans- labelmates <a href="http://nownowband.com/">Now, Now</a>. Their new album, <em>Threads</em>, recalls both the Jealous Sound and Tegan and Sara&#8212;celestial, soft vocals and shimmering guitar riffs leading to choruses that <strong>sound like exploding stars</strong>. On <em>Brain Pulse Music</em>, he combines an experimental bioelectric procedure with traditional Japanese instrumentation to create alien Zen ambience and Harry-Partch-meets-Harry-Bertoia sonic sculptures. You may not have suffered directly from that awful quake and the resultant tsunami, but you can still benefit from Batoh's unconventional aural therapy. Seattle's <a href="https://soundcloud.com/vanceg">Vance Galloway</a> (guitarist and Decibel Festival sound engineer) and <a href="http://www.noisepoetnobody.com/">Noisepoetnobody</a> (aka synth manipulator Casey Jones) complement the headliner's heady output with their own finely wrought drones and mysterious percussive rustlings. His lyrics wax and wane with truth and bare tales from his life. Melodies surface as lines hummed in the in-between times. These easy melodies coat the heavy subject matter of suicide, heartbreak, grief and regret. As with his previous project, The Dutchess and the Duke, listen- ing to Case Studies feels like taking part in an exploration of sentimental landscapes. </p> <p>This Is Another Life is Lortz&#8217;s second full-length solo release on Sacred Bones. It is the follow-up album to 2011&#8217;s highly acclaimed The World is Just a Shape to Fill the Night. This is Another Life features guest vocals by Marissa Nadler on &#8220;Villain&#8221; and was produced and engineered by Greg Ashley of the band Gris Gris. The Lads combine ageless hits from the likes of <strong>Chuck Berry and the Kinks</strong> with a sprinkling of originals and suspicious accents. (Though they claim to be from England, I feel like I've seen Fancy Lads around town, and they bear very strong resemblance to Seattle's best Christmas-only band, Dancer and Prancer...) If you'd rather not dress up, a hospital gown would also be appropriate tonight, as supergroup <strong>Childbirth</strong> (featuring members from Pony Time, Chastity Belt, and Tacocat) will be delivering their second show ever. The original's an ebullient heart-pumper with a beautiful, understated vibraphone (or is it mbira?) motif and intricately arranged backing vocals. The tempo's way faster than <a href="https://soundcloud.com/d-j-a-o">DJAO</a>'s usual BPM range, but he finds a way to make the song more introverted and intense by emphasizing the kick drum and woodblock hits and chopping the vocals to an urgent scatting. This is a pretty high-profile remix job for AO; Mvula's <em>Sing to the Moon</em> album&#8212;where "Green Garden" originates&#8212;came out in March on <strong>RCA</strong>. BB's <strong>harshed-up queer punk</strong> seethes with witchy screaming, brutal percussive freak-outs, and jarring stops/starts, with occasional moody interludes. Also from Seattle, heavy grinders <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mercy-Ties/146392222077924">Mercy Ties</a> had me from the <em>Some Kind of Monster</em> (aka the best/worst Metallica documentary ever) quote at the beginning of their song "No Harm, No Foul." You've come to the right place, then. Seattle duo <a href="https://www.facebook.com/TheSyrinxEffect?ref=ts&fref=ts">the Syrinx Effect</a> improvise chamber jazz with sax, trombone, guitar pedals, and "toys." The effect, so to speak, is <strong>woozy and pregnant with some kind of intangible menace or blessing</strong>. They have a distinctive thing going. Another local twosome, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/themidgetsound">the Midget</a>, purvey attractive electro-pop songs that sometimes motor(ik) like Stereolab or Quickspace. Their melodies and guitar/keyboard textures are gloriously, gleamingly retro-futurist, and their rhythms are supremely efficient. Noel Brass Jr. is leader of fab soul-jazz trio <a href="https://www.facebook.com/Afrocop">Afrocop</a> and one of the city's most accomplished composers of moving, Tarkovsky-film-worthy keyboard odysseys. Seattle lo-fi electronic explorers <strong>Lou-Lou Hernandez</strong> celebrate the release of a new full-length cassette, <em>Doors Closing, Doors Opening</em>. It's their richest, strangest batch of <strong>enigma-dispersing electro ditties</strong> to date. Women can be brave and rude and intelligent. Women can make you uncomfortable and they can set their own terms."</p> <p><strong>Chastity Belt </strong>play tonight with <strong>Street Gnar</strong>, Massenger and the Memories (all three are <strong>Burger Records </strong>bands) <a href="https://www.facebook.com/events/226006404208435/?ref=ts&fref=ts">tonight at the Rendezvous</a>. I'm reminded of early Swans&#8212;nearly the ultimate in heavy and demonic rock during the first half of the '80s&#8212;but more prone to jaggedly up the tempo from Swans' mastodon trudge; plus, the singer's voice eerily resembles <strong>Michael Gira's stone-faced, stentorian bellowing</strong>. Fuller has also noted that Dreamdecay "have gone underappreciated in the local music community." Let's end that nonsense now.
