The Hard Sell

posted by on June 30 at 13:03 PM

deathofasalesman.jpgBands want and need people to buy their CD. Sometimes at shows, they give the hard sell by announcing they have CDís for sale after every song. Just in case you didnít see the merch table or hear the first four announcements. It gets uncomfortable. If youíre not going to buy the CD, hearing the ďWe have CDís for saleĒ announcement eight times is probably not going to sway you into purchase mode.

I once saw a man get Satanic with the hard sell. It wasnít so much a sell as it was a threatening. He was in a metalish funk band and after his show, he said this to a merch browser:

If you donít buy our CD, Iím going to get 666 on your ass.

The merch browser was dismayed and quickly walked away. It was a joke. A joke that didnít fly. They guy in the band wasnít really going to get 666 on anyone, but his negative and ugly tone lost the sale for him. He tried to stop the browser and laugh off his evil fumbling, but she kept walking.

Great post; I'm definitely opposed to the hard-sell. Nothin wrong with a small amount of hyping though... hey what happened to lineout? People used to post great long argumentative threads on here...

Too hot for long argumentative threads.

Nothing more annoying than the Hard Sell.

666 is actually a very lucky #.

Smoosh got an hour-plus long set at a Tennis Pro and Harvey Danger concert at WWU a couple of years ago. That got old really fast.
